fix(ui): make UI language change consistent (#2185) - #2194
Before this PR, the webview had three ways to get translations: useAppTranslation, useTranslation, and a direct import of import {t} from "i18next". Some of them did not follow a language change, so text could keep the previous language. This PR fixes the UI language change problem and makes the webview use one approach with react-i18next. Then it removes the custom translation layer.
The PR makes four changes:
Load translations at startup.setup.ts calls loadTranslations() when the module loads. Before, a mount effect in TranslationProvider loaded them, so the first render could show raw keys.
Apply the language directly. The new helper applyLanguage() (webview-ui/src/i18n/language.ts) changes the i18next language. It does nothing if the language is already active. The "state" message handler in ExtensionStateContext calls it before the state is rendered. Thus components show the correct language from their first render.
Use common rules for react-i18next. These rules prevent stale cached output:
Get t and i18n from useTranslation. Do not import t from i18next and do not call i18next.t.
Pass t to each <Trans> (<Trans t={t} ... />).
Pass t as an argument to helpers. formatLargeNumber, formatTimeAgo, and validateApiConfiguration now take t.
New ESLint rules in webview-ui/eslint.config.mjs enforce these rules. The translation guides (.roo/rules-translate/001-general-rules.md and .roo/skills/roo-translation/SKILL.md) describe them.
Use one hook. All components use useTranslation from react-i18next. useAppTranslation is no longer used.
These changes make the translation harness simpler:
TranslationContext, its mock, and its test are deleted.
The Playwright TranslationContext stub and its Vite alias are deleted.
The visual fixtures use the new createFixtureI18n() helper with I18nextProvider.
Test mocks only mock react-i18next.
For reviewers, please check these items with care:
The applyLanguage() call in the "state" handler of ExtensionStateContext.tsx. This is now the only place where the language changes.
The new t argument in utils/format.ts and utils/validate.ts.
Most of the diff is a mechanical change from useAppTranslation to useTranslation, import { t } from "react-i18next" and direct usage of t to const { t } = useTranslation(), adding t property to every <Trans> component.
Test Procedure
New unit tests:
webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/languageSwitch.spec.tsx: It changes the language from en to es without a remount. Plain useTranslation, namespaced useTranslation, and Trans consumers all show the new language. The test consumers cache output on t, as React Compiler does. The test also checks that t is stable while the language does not change. It also checks that a namespaced t accepts fully qualified keys.
webview-ui/src/i18n/__tests__/hydrationLanguage.spec.tsx: Under StrictMode, components that hydration mounts show the hydrated language. It also tests applyLanguage(). The helper changes to a different language. It does not emit languageChanged again for the active language or for a missing language.
format.spec.ts and validate.spec.ts now pass t to the helpers.
To run the tests:
cd webview-ui
npx vitest run src/i18n src/utils
npx vitest run
pnpm lint
Manual test:
Build and start the extension. Open the Zoo Code panel.
If your language is not English by default, make sure that all visible text is language-consistent.
Open Settings and change the language (for example, from English to Español). Click Save.
Make sure that all visible text changes at the same time. Check the chat view, the task header, the Welcome page, and the Settings view. Do not reload the webview.
Close and open the extension again. Make sure that the first render shows the saved language and no raw translation keys.

Improvements
Language changes now update translated text throughout the interface, including open chat approval prompts, without requiring screens to be reopened.
Validation messages, large-number formatting, and time-ago labels reflect the active language.
Translated content is available from the initial render, and outdated state updates no longer override newer language selections.
Localization
Updated localization guidance and added checks to help keep translations consistent.
Testing
Expanded coverage for language switching and translated interface behavior.
The WebView now uses react-i18next instead of a custom translation context. Extension state carries ordered snapshots so stale language updates are ignored. Components, helpers, tests, and visual fixtures now use explicit translation functions or I18nextProvider.

The app initializes i18next during startup and applies accepted language updates from extension state. State snapshots include stateSeq, and stale snapshots preserve the current language. The custom translation contexts and providers are removed.
Formatting and validation functions now receive t. Callers pass the active translation function. Existing formatting thresholds and validation conditions remain unchanged.
Components now use useTranslation instead of useAppTranslation or global translation imports. Affected Trans elements receive t. Chat approval state stores translation keys and derives labels with t.
Tests and visual fixtures webview-ui/src/**/__tests__/*, webview-ui/playwright/*, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
Tests replace TranslationContext mocks and wrappers with react-i18next mocks or I18nextProvider. New coverage checks language changes without remounting, hydration behavior, translated UI output, and snapshot ordering.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(ui): make UI language change consistent (#2185)" matches the main change. The PR makes webview language switching apply to all UI text without a reload. It loads translations at startup, applies the language in the state handler, and standardizes on react-i18next's useTranslation. The title is short and specific, and the scope is clear. It uses a conventional commit prefix and includes the issue number.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the main sections of the template: the linked issue (Closes: #2185), a detailed description of the how and the review focus points, test procedure with unit test files, commands, and manual steps, and a completed pre-submission checklist. Documentation impact is addressed. It is mostly complete. Gaps: the Visual Snapshots section is not filled in, the Test Procedure does not report the results of the commands, and the Get in Touch section includes a Discord handle as template requested. The description is written in active, short sentences, though several sentences are long and some use passive voice. The Additional Notes raise an unresolved question about formatDate.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
For [#2185], the PR eagerly loads locale resources and calls applyLanguage() in the "state" handler before state rendering. stateSeq prevents an older asynchronous snapshot from reverting the active language. Components and helpers use react-i18next consistently. Added tests cover language changes without remounting, hydration, stale snapshots, and translation helpers.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain connected to [#2185]. The hook migration, ESLint rules, translation guidance, fixture and mock updates, helper parameters, and tests support consistent language updates or prevent regressions. No unrelated change is demonstrated in the reviewed summary.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed production path matches the security failure conditions. The new stateSeq and applyLanguage path only selects a bundled i18n language. The validation changes pass t for messages and preserve provider/model allowlist checks in validateProviderAgainstOrganizationSettings. ChatView stores translation keys for approval labels, while approval actions still use the existing clineAsk handlers and askResponse values. The diff adds no new secret/PII sink, command execution, network sink, or approval/allowlist bypass.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence path can lose or corrupt state. The PR adds an in-memory stateSeq to webview snapshots and changes runtime i18n selection. The only new unawaited call is void instance.changeLanguage(language), which does not persist state. Language persistence still uses the existing awaited contextProxy.setValue() path.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path introduces a leaked resource or repeated work after disposal, cancellation, or restart. ExtensionStateContextProvider still removes its window message listener in the effect cleanup. The removed TranslationProvider only had mount effects; translation setup now performs synchronous bundled-resource registration, and applyLanguage() starts the existing i18next language transition without registering a listener, timer, watcher, or provider. ClineProvider only adds a state sequence counter.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The prior regression finding remains unresolved. CommandExecution.tsx:201 changed the exited-status tooltip to t("chat:commandExecution.exitStatus", { exitCode: status.exitCode }); the English resource interpolates {{exitCode}}. The focused CommandExecution.spec.tsx status tests only send exitCode: 0 and assert the status dot. They do not expose the tooltip or assert its localized text. Repository search found no exitStatus assertion elsewhere.
Resolution
Add a focused component test in webview-ui/src/components/chat/__tests__/CommandExecution.spec.tsx for an exited command with a non-zero code, such as exitCode: 2. Trigger or otherwise expose the StandardTooltip and assert Exited with status 2 or the equivalent locale text.

Assign stateSeq when the language is read.
stateSeq is assigned before getState reads language. If concurrent posts read English and then Spanish but deliver Spanish first, the English snapshot receives the higher sequence and reverts the webview to English. Capture ordering at the language read, or serialize these snapshots.

Review comment at @src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts at line 357:
Update the `getState` snapshot flow so `stateSeq` captures ordering when
`language` is read, rather than before that read. Ensure concurrently produced
snapshots are sequenced consistently with their language reads so an older
language snapshot cannot overwrite a newer one.
