Closes: #2084

Description

This PR adds the coding-task evaluation framework from issue #2084. It builds on the agent-evals substrate from PR #1909. The framework grades real Zoo runs, repeats them, and compares two commits in one self-contained report.

Frozen fixtures. The suite coding-basic-v1 ships five frozen coding fixtures: clamp-range, slugify-text, parse-csv-line, format-bytes, and deep-get. Each fixture has one prompt, a known-good workspace, a tool policy, execution limits, hidden acceptance tests, and two reference solutions. One solution is correct. One is plausible but wrong. Each grader passes the correct solution and fails the incorrect one.

Isolation and digests. Each fixture has an immutable initial-state digest. Each run builds its workspace from that state in a fresh directory. Runs cannot inherit changes from other runs. The suite digest pins the fixture content, hidden tests, reference solutions, and grader version. Any edit changes the digest and marks a cross-commit comparison incompatible.

Container grading. After the agent stops, the grader copies the final workspace to a fresh directory and adds the hidden tests. It runs them in a disposable container with CPU, memory, and time limits. The runtime detects Docker or Podman. The grader has no provider credential and no network access. A grader that hangs, crashes, or exceeds its limits reports grading failure. It never reports incorrect.

Outcomes. Each run reports one of five outcomes: correct, incorrect, timed out, grading failure, or infrastructure failure. Infrastructure failures stay separate from incorrect results.

Paired comparisons. pnpm coding-evals:compare runs the same fixtures on a baseline commit and a candidate commit with pinned inputs. The default is three repetitions per fixture per commit. Pinned inputs cover the commit SHAs, the suite digest, the settings digest, the model identifier, the grader version, and the runner environment. A pinned difference marks the pair as incompatible in the report. pnpm coding-evals:side runs one side.

Metrics and reports. Per-run metrics cover input, output, and cached tokens, tool calls, tool failures, duration, stop reason, outcome, and estimated cost where the price table allows it. Missing values stay missing. Unsupported telemetry is reported as unavailable. The framework writes a JSON report and a self-contained Markdown report with paired differences and uncertainty. It makes no statistical significance claim.

Test Procedure

  • Run pnpm test:agent-evals:unit. All 128 tests pass offline. The suite uses node:test and needs no VS Code, no provider credential, and no container runtime.
  • Run pnpm agent-evals:check-types. The check passes with no errors.
  • Grader unit tests cover the correct and incorrect reference solutions, grader timeouts, and grader crashes.

Not run: the live acceptance check on a deliberately broken commit. This check remains unrun. It needs VS Code, provider credentials, and Docker or Podman. Reviewers with that setup can run pnpm coding-evals:compare against a broken candidate commit to complete it.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added evaluations for five programming tasks, with repeated runs and automated grading of final workspace states.
    • Added comparisons of approved commits, with reports covering outcomes, success rates, input compatibility, and available timing and cost metrics.
    • Added commands to run evaluations and comparisons.
  • Improvements
    • Usage data is collected after confirmed task completion or an observer stop following the final completion message—not after plain stops, timeouts, or session losses.
    • Evaluations require approved, clean commits and isolated grading. Incomplete or truncated workspace snapshots are not graded.
    • Interruptions trigger cleanup and prevent incomplete results from being published.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on running evaluations, commit approval, grading isolation, reports, and evaluation limitations.

This change adds five coding fixtures, final-workspace grading, run metrics, and paired commit comparisons. It also adds trust checks, isolated worktree preparation, process cleanup, and atomic publication of side results and comparison reports. Usage draining now follows an observer stop after a final completion_result message.

The evaluation framework is mostly sound, but a very noisy solution could be graded as a grading failure rather than a solution failure. A chained symlink in the VS Code cache could pass integrity checks. The test for disabled command tools is weaker than it looks. None of these is likely to affect normal runs; follow up soon after merge.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description covers the issue, implementation, tests, and documentation. It identifies the unrun live acceptance check. Self-review and contribution guidelines remain unchecked; the test-helper checklist item and contact are missing.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The changed evaluation behaviors have focused coverage for grading, reports, isolation, and failure handling. The cache containment tests cover escaping symlinks and an outside executable. Tests were not run in this environment. Prior failure addressed: Commit e0427c6 adds tests in vscode-cache.test.ts for absolute and escaping relative symlinks, an outside executable, and a usable contained relative symlink.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2084] The fixtures, isolated workspaces, container grading, paired reports, accounting rules, and offline tests address the framework requirements. The broken-commit live check was not run; it is a manual check. The grader does not reliably distinguish hidden-test failures from passes: grader-driver.mjs trusts the first TAP count lines from the test process's combined stdout and stderr, and ignores its exit code. Agent-written code can write forged count lines to the test runner's stderr through its parent process file descriptor. The grader can then report correct when hidden tests fail.

Resolution

Make the grader obtain test results through a channel that agent-written code cannot forge. Add an automated test that attempts to forge passing counts while hidden tests fail.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

scripts/agent-evals/grader-driver.mjs:58-63,82-96,123-150 trusts test-runner output produced while executing agent code. For example, an agent can put process.exit(0) at the top of src/clamp.js. The hidden test imports that file before registering its tests, so the test process exits successfully without running them. The driver accepts the file-level pass as a correct result. The added test at grader-driver.test.ts:29,49-56 confirms that a passing file without registered tests counts as one pass. The previous command-execution concern is addressed: coding-fixtures.ts disables execute_command, and coding-eval-boundary.spec.ts checks the reported outside-workspace command.

Resolution

Make the grading result independent of agent-controlled process output and require evidence that every hidden acceptance test ran. Add a regression test for early successful exit and forged test output.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

Concurrent standalone side runs can corrupt or delete published results. coding-side.mts:162,264-281 uses the same output paths without a lock. If one run publishes while another is still running, the second can overwrite its artifacts or delete its results during interruption cleanup (coding-side-flow.ts:49-56,109-125). The comparison-output lock addresses the prior failure, but does not protect standalone side runs.

Resolution

Reject or serialize standalone side runs that use the same canonical output directory. Hold the lock through invalidation, execution, publication, and cleanup. Add overlap and interruption tests.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

Comparison cancellation can orphan a preparation process. coding-compare.mts:38-51 and coding-side.mts:49-53,143-149 use the same 30-second termination grace. If a detached install ignores SIGTERM, the comparison guard can kill the side before its guard kills the separately detached install group (coding-compare.ts:77-83,180-204). The install and the side's worktree can survive. Comparison signal tests cover the driver's worktree preparation, not this nested install path.

Resolution

Coordinate nested cancellation so the side can stop its preparation group and remove its worktree before the comparison kills it. Provide a fallback that stops the preparation group if the side cannot finish. Add a comparison-level test with a SIGTERM-resistant install that verifies process-group and worktree cleanup.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-fixtures.ts:
- Around line 63-95: Add a parity test in coding-fixtures.test.ts that builds
each configuration from CODING_FIXTURE_BUNDLES, removes openAiApiKey and parses
openAiExtraBody, then deep-compares the normalized result with the fixture’s
settingsProjection.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-grader.ts:
- Around line 74-85: Separate the error handling around buildGradingCopy from
inputs.runtime.run so copy failures retain the gradingCopyFailed reason and
runtime exceptions return graderRuntimeFailed. Make gradingDir cleanup
best-effort so an fs.rm failure cannot replace either verdict.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-metrics.ts:
- Line 104: Update the accountingComplete calculation in the metrics result to
require both an available estimate and complete trace accounting, using
accounting.completeness.status. Add a test with partial trace completeness and a
configured price table that asserts accountingComplete is false.
- Line 89: Update the estimated-cost selection around estimateRunCost to check
for a missing usage snapshot first and return noUsageEventsObserved, then check
modelIdentifier.available and return modelIdentifierMissing before estimating.
Pass the available modelIdentifier.value to estimateRunCost; do not use an empty
string as a fallback.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.test.ts:
- Line 126: Update the assertion in the coding report test to verify both
deterministic cost lines independently: the baseline line for one correct run
with complete cost, and the candidate line for no correct runs and zero
exclusions. Do not use an alternation that passes when only one line matches.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.test.ts:
- Around line 87-89: Update the process.once exit cleanup to remove the
temporary directory synchronously, using rmSync, or move cleanup into an after
hook that completes before teardown; ensure directories created by the
temporary-directory setup are removed, not just grading-copy.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.ts:
- Around line 64-68: Update the cleanup flow around inner.readFinalWorkspace so
a rejected workspace read leaves snapshot undefined rather than recording an
empty workspace, and avoid rereading once a snapshot has been captured so
repeated cleanup cannot overwrite it. Add a coding-run test verifying a rejected
read produces infrastructure-failure with reason finalWorkspaceUnavailable.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts:
- Line 123: Validate CODING_EVALS_SIDE near readArgs() before any runs start,
and reject values other than "baseline" or "candidate" instead of relying on the
SidePins["side"] cast. Keep "baseline" as the default when the environment
variable is unset, and assign sideLabel only after validation.
- Line 67: Update credential initialization in the side to fail immediately with
a clear error when the environment variable named by credentialEnv is unset or
empty, rather than substituting an empty string and continuing to write results.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts:
- Around line 103-111: Update the container execution flow around
buildContainerArgs and spawn so a timeout removes the running container, not
just the CLI process; assign the container a unique name and complete its
removal before the finally block removes outDir. Also keep first-run image pulls
outside job.resources.timeoutMs so grading time is not consumed by pulling
node:22-bookworm.
- Around line 99-100: Update the outDir setup after fs.mkdir in the container
runtime so the directory is writable by the container user despite dropped
capabilities; preserve recursive creation and set appropriate permissions before
mounting it at /out.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/grader-driver.mjs:
- Line 122: Update the grading aggregation around readCounts to accumulate
counts.cancelled ?? 0 alongside failedCount, then require the accumulated
cancellation count to be zero in the passed result. Preserve the existing
failure and passed-test checks.

146-146: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comment is refuted. coding-side.mts defaults a missing CODING_EVALS_SIDE value to "baseline" and always writes side-results.json. The environment variable is only set by paired comparisons to record the baseline or candidate label.

scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.ts: 1

68-69: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

No shifted pairs occur in the supported side-output path.

scripts/agent-evals/coding-side.mts iterates over every requested repIndex and pushes either the successful record or an infrastructure-failure record. It writes side-results.json only after all repetitions complete. An interruption before that write does not produce a partial side result for the report to pair.

The report accepts arbitrary synthetic SideResult values, but that does not establish a defect in the supported coding-evaluation workflow.

🟡 Minor · Treat truncated workspace captures as infrastructure failures. · coding-run.ts:125-143

scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.ts:125-143
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat truncated workspace captures as infrastructure failures.

readWorkspaceFiles returns partial files after a capture limit is reached. runCodingFixtureOnce still grades those files. If the capture omits a required solution file, the hidden tests can fail and classify the correct agent result as incorrect. Skip grading when snapshot.truncated is true and classify the run as infrastructure-failure.

In runCodingFixtureOnce, skip runGrader when the workspace snapshot is
truncated, and propagate the truncation state to outcome classification so the
run is reported as an infrastructure failure rather than incorrect. Preserve
grading for complete snapshots.

receive an allowlisted environment instead of inheriting process.env; exclude

- Line 120: Register SIGINT and SIGTERM handlers before spawning the detached
child process, and have them terminate its process group with the existing
timeout cleanup’s SIGTERM-then-SIGKILL sequence. Then run the driver’s cleanup
and exit so interrupted runs do not leave the child or temporary resources
behind.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-compare.ts:

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-report.test.ts:

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.test.ts:
- Around line 195-218: Add observer-level rejection tests for partial, blank,
and wrong-say completion messages using stopOnFinalCompletionMessage. Extend the

partial completion message that asserts TASK_RUN_TIMEOUT, a timed-out outcome,
and no grading.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-run.ts:
- Around line 62-70: Update the runner teardown path used with
stopOnFinalCompletionMessage so a stop caused by a final completion message
still performs the bounded usage drain; preserve the existing session-loss
behavior and avoid draining unrelated stopped runs.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/coding-trust.test.ts:
- Around line 61-66: Replace the try/catch around assertCommitsApproved in this
test with assert.throws so the test fails if the call returns normally. Validate

its commits contain exactly sha("b").

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts:
- Around line 79-86: Cap the stdout and stderr buffers in `exec` so container
output cannot grow host memory without bound. Define a shared output limit near
`exec` and append only up to that limit in both data handlers, preserving the
existing captured output for `imageDigest`, `pull`, and `remove`.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/fs-atomic.test.ts:
- Around line 41-44: Update the failure case in “preserves the previous file and
leaves no temp residue when a write fails” to make the rename fail after the
temp file is written: create a non-empty blocker directory and call
writeFileAtomic with that directory as the target. Keep the existing assertion
that the previous file remains intact, and check the directory entries to ensure
no temp file remains.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/README.md:
- Line 152: Update the paired comparison reader to load the shared
side-results.json filename written by coding-side.mts, rather than choosing
baseline-results.json or candidate-results.json. Change sideResultFileName and
its use in the paired driver to take no side argument and return the filename
documented by the README.

134-152: Add a test for the 0o777 output-directory mode.

No test checks that outDir is world-writable before the container starts. The fs.chmod(outDir, 0o777) call in container-runtime.ts is the only guard against --cap-drop ALL blocking /out/result.json. A regression there fails only under a real engine.

In the run stub, call fs.stat(outDirFromArgs(args)) and assert (mode & 0o777) === 0o777.

This repeats the earlier review point on container-runtime.ts that asked for a permission regression test.

If SIGINT or SIGTERM arrives during the await fs.mkdir on Line 152, sideGuard.interrupt() finds no tracked pid. It marks the guard as interrupted and returns "none". Line 154 then spawns the side without another check. track() does not stop the new child. A repeated signal returns early on Line 63. The side runs with the credential until its wall clock expires.

Minor follow-up Add a test for a baseline interrupt that returns normally.

335-337: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Add a test for a baseline interrupt that returns normally.

The new interrupt tests signal only when candidate returns. No test covers a baseline callback that raises the interrupt flag and then returns normally. executeComparisonFlow calls runSide("candidate") straight after runSide("baseline"), with no interrupt check between them. A regression that still invokes candidate after a baseline-side interrupt would pass the current tests. Decide whether the flow should skip candidate in this case before adding the assertion. The current flow would fail an assertion that candidate is not invoked.

Nitpick Assert the cost summary in the incomplete-accounting test.

569-572: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Assert the cost summary in the incomplete-accounting test.

The test sets an available estimate on one correct run and marks its accounting incomplete. It checks only pairedCosts. A costPerSuccessfulTask regression for that side would not fail this test. No other test covers this combination.

Suggested test assertion

 		assert.deepEqual(row.pairedCosts.pairs, [])
+ const summary = report.costSummary[incompleteSide]

Nitpick Add a run that omits imageDigest and assert "unavailable".

144-153: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Add a run that omits imageDigest and assert "unavailable".

The new case covers only a reader that returns available: true. Without imageDigest, coding-run.ts records "unavailable", but no test asserts that value. A regression to undefined would pass, and sideGraderImageDigest would skip that run.

As per path instructions: "Require regression coverage ... including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases."

Add a case to the coding-run tests that omits `imageDigest` from the grading
runtime and asserts `record.graderImageDigest` is `"unavailable"`. Keep the
existing available-digest case unchanged and use the same run outcome setup.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.test.ts:
- Around line 160-183: Add a regression test for the `/out` permissions in
`createContainerGradingRuntime`: override the recording CLI’s `run` behavior to
stat the output directory and assert its permission bits are `0o777` before
writing `result.json`. Keep the assertion focused on the mode set by `run`’s
chmod call.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/container-runtime.ts:
- Line 11: Update GRADER_IMAGE to use a fully qualified image reference for the
existing node:22-bookworm image, including its registry and namespace, while
preserving the current tag.

---

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
Run `pnpm coding-evals:compare` with an approved deliberately broken candidate
commit. Provide the resulting report as reviewable evidence that at least one
grader fails the candidate and that the run is classified as `incorrect`, not as
a grading or infrastructure failure.

- Regression Evidence:
Add focused subprocess tests for the listed `grader-driver.mjs` branches and
assert every completed-result field, including failure collection and the
50-entry cap. Add a focused `createHostRuntime().readFinalWorkspace()` success
test that creates a workspace through `launch` with a mocked downloader, then
verifies the captured files and truncation state. Retain the existing
atomic-publication and bounded-helper tests.

- Security Boundaries:
Run VS Code download and extraction in a credential-free subprocess with an
explicit sanitized environment, or replace the downloader boundary with
extraction through validated absolute `tar`/`unzip` paths and an explicit
sanitized environment. Do not call `downloadAndUnzipVSCode` while the side
process holds the credential. Add a regression test with a fake PATH `tar` or
`unzip` that records whether `SOLHEIM_API_KEY` is visible.

- Persistence Integrity:
Invalidate the comparison output before either side starts, and fail closed if
that invalidation cannot remove the completion marker and report files. Also
remove the report generation on every non-interrupt failure before rethrowing.
Attempt all removals and aggregate cleanup errors so a partial removal cannot
leave a valid completion marker or a report that consumers can mistake for the
current run.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Store the escalation timer handle and clear it from both `error` and `exit`
handlers. Make timeout cleanup idempotent. Await termination of the full process
group before `runCompareSide` returns or comparison cleanup removes the side
worktree. Add a regression test where the side receives `SIGTERM`, exits before
the grace period, and verifies that no delayed `SIGKILL` occurs after cleanup.

Bound TAP capture without losing grading data.

A solution can emit enough output to exhaust the grader container before the tests finish. This can produce a grading failure instead of a completed verdict.

Bound the capture while preserving the final count summary and up to 50 failure names. A head-and-tail cap alone can discard failure names in the middle.

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Security Boundaries:
Isolate agent command execution from host secrets, or disable command execution
until an equivalent boundary is enforced. Add a regression test that an approved
command cannot read files outside the workspace.

- Persistence Integrity:
Protect each output directory for the full comparison lifecycle, including
invalidation, publication, and cleanup. Reject or serialize concurrent writers.
Add coverage for overlapping comparisons and failure cleanup.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Coordinate nested cancellation so the comparison does not kill the side before
its detached preparation group is terminated and cleanup completes. Ensure a
fallback can terminate the preparation group if the side cannot finish. Add a
comparison-level test with an install that ignores SIGTERM and verify that its
process group and worktree are gone after cancellation.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/vscode-cache.test.ts:
- Around line 8-31: Add focused coverage around createPrivateVSCodeDownloader
and the existing cache test for the executable-path, symlink, unsupported-entry,
and copy-integrity guards. Verify that an in-tree relative symlink is accepted,
while absolute and parent-traversal symlink targets are rejected, and assert the
distinct source- and copy-integrity errors without changing the downloader’s
behavior.

Review comments at @scripts/agent-evals/vscode-cache.ts:
- Line 49: Update the download promise cached by `downloads.set` so a rejection
removes that version’s failed promise from `downloads` and propagates the error,
allowing a later call to retry. Add a test that verifies the first download
fails and the next call succeeds.

---

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Regression Evidence:
Add unit tests that reject absolute and escaping relative symlinks and an
executable path outside the cache. Also verify that a contained relative symlink
remains usable.

- Security Boundaries:
Isolate agent command execution from host secrets, or disable command execution
until an equivalent boundary is enforced. Add a regression test that an approved
command cannot read outside the workspace.

- Persistence Integrity:
Reject or serialize concurrent comparisons for the same output directory
throughout invalidation, publication, and cleanup. Add coverage for overlapping
comparisons and failure cleanup.

- Lifecycle Resource Cleanup:
Coordinate nested cancellation so the side can terminate its preparation group
and clean up before the comparison kills it. Provide a fallback that terminates
the preparation group if the side cannot finish. Add a comparison-level test
with an install that ignores SIGTERM and verify that its process group and
worktree are gone after cancellation.

The host environment filters these variables.

The side receives the proxy variables, but buildChildEnvironment does not forward them to the host.

25-25: Performance & Scalability

The code establishes full-file buffering and repeated hashing, but not a material performance problem. Streaming would reduce buffer size, but would not remove the repeated hashing. The proposed change depends on an impact that is not established.

Reject chained symlinks that escape the cache.

For d1/d2/link2 -> .. and d1/d2/x -> link2/../../y, both lexical checks pass, but x resolves to <root>/../y. The copy retains the escaping link, and its digest does not cover the outside target. If the downloader returns x as the executable, the launcher can execute that outside target.

Resolve symlink chains before accepting them, and add a regression test that also preserves valid in-cache links.

Review comment at @scripts/agent-evals/vscode-cache.ts around lines 17 - 19:
Update the symlink validation around `path.resolve` so it follows chained
symlinks and rejects any link whose final target escapes the cache root, rather
than relying only on the lexical target path. Add a regression test for the
chained escape through `link2` and `x`, while confirming valid in-cache symlinks
remain accepted.

Test the disabled-command dispatch boundary.

This test rejects execute_command through the mode groups, not disabledTools. Add a dispatcher test with the real validator and a mocked command handler. Assert that the handler does not run. Include a command-enabled mode case to isolate disabledTools enforcement from the mode restriction.
