[Fix] Over-long MCP tool names reach API history and break the task - #2118
buildMcpToolName cut mcp--<server>--<tool> at 64 characters. A model that completes the cut name calls the full name; parseMcpToolName resolves it, the call succeeds, and NativeToolCallParser.parseDynamicMcpTool keeps the over-long name, which Task.ts writes to history. Bedrock Converse and Azure OpenAI (also via LiteLLM) reject any history tool_use.name over 64 characters, so every later request fails. (A model that instead calls the declared cut name also failed, because the cut tool name matched no tool.)
Change
buildMcpToolName shortens over-long names with a hash suffix (first 55 chars + _ + 8-hex SHA-256 of the full name = 64), so distinct tools stay distinct and the declared name no longer looks like a half-cut word.
resolveMcpToolByName maps a called name (declared/hashed, uncut, or underscore-mangled) back to the original server and tool. presentAssistantMessage uses it when the parsed names match no tool, so both the hashed and uncut names execute.
parseDynamicMcpTool records an over-long name under the declared name, so it can never reach history.
capMcpToolUseNames renames over-long MCP tool_use names already in history when a request is built, which unsticks existing tasks without condensing (stored history is not mutated).
Notes
Declared names for tools that were previously cut change (hash suffix); names ≤ 64 characters are unchanged.
presentAssistantMessage now calls mcpHub.getAllServers() on the lookup path, so test doubles for the hub gained that method.
Tests
mcp-name-long.spec.ts (limit, hash, determinism, distinctness, resolution of declared/uncut/mangled names), NativeToolCallParser-mcp-long-name.spec.ts, capMcpToolUseNames.spec.ts, and a presentAssistantMessage test that a hashed name executes against the right server and tool. src suite (11,045 tests) and check-types pass.

Added support for MCP tools with names longer than provider limits. Long names are shortened consistently while preserving the ability to identify the original server and tool.
Bug Fixes
Improved MCP tool execution when model responses use shortened or normalized names, helping calls reach the correct server and tool.
Ensured conversation history sent to providers uses compatible MCP tool names while leaving stored messages unchanged.
MCP tool names longer than 64 characters now receive hash-suffixed names. API history caps overlong MCP tool-use names, and native MCP calls can resolve shortened names to their declared server and tool names.

Summary
Bounded names and lookup src/utils/mcp-name.ts, src/utils/__tests__/mcp-name-long.spec.ts
Names up to 64 characters remain unchanged. Longer names use an eight-character SHA-256 hash suffix. Name lookup matches shortened and uncut names with hyphen/underscore normalization.
Tool-call and API-history names src/core/assistant-message/NativeToolCallParser.ts, src/core/assistant-message/__tests__/NativeToolCallParser-mcp-long-name.spec.ts, src/core/task/capMcpToolUseNames.ts, src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/capMcpToolUseNames.spec.ts
Native tool-call parsing reconstructs overlong names. API conversation history caps parseable MCP tool-use names before image blocks are removed. Tests cover name limits, unchanged inputs, and input immutability.
Complete native calls match declared server tools or resolve the original call name. The shared MCP handler receives the resolved names. Tests cover shortened-name resolution and update MCP hub mocks with getAllServers.
The original long-name failures are addressed. Tighten the mangled-name test’s spelling assertion; no newly introduced production failure was established, so the change is mergeable with this bounded follow-up.

The description includes the linked issue, problem, implementation details, design notes, and test coverage. It is sufficiently complete to explain the change, although it omits the template checklist and some optional sections.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed source and tests address MCP name construction, model-call resolution, tool execution, and API history shaping for issue #2065. Mock updates support the new MCP server lookup. No unrelated product behavior is established.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure conditions. resolveMcpToolByName maps model-supplied names only to declared MCP server/tool pairs. The resolved call still passes validateToolUse, tool existence and enabled-state checks, ensureMcpServerAllowed, and user approval before callTool. History capping only rewrites API request data and does not execute input or mutate stored history. No changed code leaks secrets or PII.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
No changed persistence-integrity failure is present. Task still awaits addToApiConversationHistory() and its existing saveApiConversationHistory() path, which awaits saveApiMessages(); the PR does not add or alter a file write, atomicity, rollback, or partial-failure path. capMcpToolUseNames() runs only while shaping API request history and explicitly returns copied messages without mutating stored history. parseDynamicMcpTool() changes the name persisted by the existing awaited history save, but this is an intentional length-safe normalization and does not lose tool arguments or state.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can leak or duplicate a resource. The PR adds synchronous MCP-name hashing, parsing, lookup, and API-history shaping. capMcpToolUseNames returns copied message data without creating tasks or timers, and McpHub.getAllServers() only maps existing connections. The new lookup runs only for complete MCP blocks; the existing presenter lock and abort checks remain in place.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2065 requires API history to use the exact name declared to the model and keep it within 64 characters. The canonical uncut path now records the canonical hashed name. The underscore-mangled over-long path does not. parseDynamicMcpTool passes parsed underscore names to buildMcpToolName, so a call such as mcp__company_gateway_tools__... produces a hashed name with underscore spelling in the prefix, while the declared name uses hyphens. presentAssistantMessage uses the resolved names for execution but does not replace mcpBlock.name, and capMcpToolUseNames does not alter this already-short name. The added test checks toolNamesMatch, not exact equality, so it does not establish the required history name.
Resolution
Canonicalize the resolved server and tool names before creating the history block, or otherwise preserve the exact declared buildMcpToolName result for underscore-mangled calls. Add a regression test that asserts exact equality with the declared name and verifies the resulting history entry.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The Task request path has changed at src/core/task/Task.ts:5835: it now applies capMcpToolUseNames before API history cleanup. The only new coverage is the helper unit test (src/core/task/__tests__/capMcpToolUseNames.spec.ts:16-45). The pull request does not change Task.spec.ts, and its existing MCP history cases use short names. No focused test verifies that attemptApiRequest sends the capped name to api.createMessage while preserving the over-long name in task.apiConversationHistory.
Resolution
Add a focused Task.spec.ts request-construction test. Put an over-long, parseable MCP tool_use in apiConversationHistory, run attemptApiRequest, and assert that api.createMessage receives the 64-character declared/hash name. Also assert that task.apiConversationHistory still contains the original over-long name.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Keep the -- separators intact in the shortened name.
The shortened name is the first 55 characters of the full name. "mcp--" uses 5 characters. If the sanitized server name has 48 or more characters, the cut drops the second -- separator. The shortened name then has the form mcp--<server prefix>_<hash>, or mcp--<server>-_<hash> when the cut splits the separator.
This is what happens when the model calls the declared name:
NativeToolCallParser.parseToolCall sees the mcp-- prefix and routes the call to parseDynamicMcpTool.
parseMcpToolName returns null because the name has no second separator.
parseDynamicMcpTool logs "Invalid dynamic MCP tool name format" and returns null, so the tool call is dropped.
resolveMcpToolByName in presentAssistantMessage.ts never runs, because no mcp_tool_use block exists. Every tool on such a server stays unusable. The old plain truncation had the same problem, but this PR adds a resolver that claims to cover shortened names, and this path never reaches it.
Fix: shorten the server and tool parts separately so the separator always survives, or let parseDynamicMcpTool fall back to name resolution.

Thanks for picking this up! I checked it against the case from #2065 by running mcp-name.ts from this branch: a history entry with the uncut name is rewritten to exactly the declared name, so an already stuck task recovers without condensing. Policy checks also run after the name is resolved, so a disabled tool or server is still refused.
Two things I'd fix before merge:
CodeRabbit's separator finding is real, but it starts at 49 characters of sanitized server name, not 48 (at 48 the tool part is empty and the name still parses). From 49 on, the declared name loses its second --, parseMcpToolName returns null, and parseDynamicMcpTool drops the call before resolveMcpToolByName can run, so no tool on that server works. Cutting the server and tool parts separately, as CodeRabbit suggests, fits the rest of the PR since resolveMcpToolByName and capMcpToolUseNames both go through buildMcpToolName.
When the model calls the uncut name with hyphens turned into underscores, parseDynamicMcpTool records a name whose hash differs from the declared one, e.g. declared mcp--example-gateway-tools--confluence-confluence_get_s_fb524807 vs recorded mcp--example_gateway_tools--confluence_confluence_get_s_04b5892a. It is under 64 characters so providers accept it, but history then holds a name that was never declared, and resolveMcpToolByName can't map it back if the model reuses it. Hashing normalizeForComparison(fullName) instead of fullName gives both spellings the same suffix, so they toolNamesMatch and resolve. Two tools that differ only by -/_ would share a hash, but they already resolve to the same tool everywhere else.
The exactly-64 test CodeRabbit asks for is worth adding too.
buildMcpToolName cut names at 64 characters, so models called the full name
instead; Zoo Code resolved it but wrote the over-long name to history, which
Bedrock and Azure OpenAI reject on every later request. Shorten with a hash
suffix, resolve called names against the declared names, write history under
the declared name, and rename over-long names already in history when
building a request.

Hash normalized names so underscore-mangled calls remain resolvable.
If the model returns an overlong uncut MCP name with hyphens changed to underscores, NativeToolCallParser.parseDynamicMcpTool rebuilds it with a hash of that changed spelling. The hash differs from the declared name’s hash. resolveMcpToolByName cannot match the rebuilt name, and API history records a name that was never declared. Hash normalizeForComparison(fullName) and add a parser-to-resolver regression case for the uncut underscore-mangled name. The PR discussion identifies this same failing input. (github.com)

Assert the exact recorded spelling in the mangled-name test.
toolNamesMatch treats - and _ as equal, so line 27 also passes when the parser records the underscore spelling. For this input the parser records mcp--company_gateway_tools--confluence_confluence_get_s_<hash>. The parser has no registry to restore the original hyphens. Assert the spelling the parser produces, so a change to that spelling fails the test.

(A model that instead calls the declared cut name also failed, because the cut tool name matched no tool.)Change
buildMcpToolNameshortens over-long names with a hash suffix (first 55 chars +_+ 8-hex SHA-256 of the full name = 64), so distinct tools stay distinct and the declared name no longer looks like a half-cut word.resolveMcpToolByNamemaps a called name (declared/hashed, uncut, or underscore-mangled) back to the original server and tool.presentAssistantMessageuses it when the parsed names match no tool, so both the hashed and uncut names execute.parseDynamicMcpToolrecords an over-long name under the declared name, so it can never reach history.capMcpToolUseNamesrenames over-long MCPtool_usenames already in history when a request is built, which unsticks existing tasks without condensing (stored history is not mutated).Notes
presentAssistantMessagenow callsmcpHub.getAllServers()on the lookup path, so test doubles for the hub gained that method.Tests
