[Fix] upsertProviderProfile: enforce org allow-list and roll back on failure - #2117
ClineProvider.upsertProviderProfile (the path behind the webview's upsertApiConfiguration) saved and activated whatever profile it was given: no ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed check, and a failure after saveConfig (mode binding, context settings, task handler) left storage, currentApiConfigName, the mode binding, in-memory settings and the task handler out of sync. updateProfileModel already had both guards; this brings upsertProviderProfile in line.
Change
Inside the existing mutation queue:
Reject with OrganizationAllowListViolationError before any write; the localized allow-list message is shown.
Snapshot the previous stored profile (if any), listApiConfigMeta, currentApiConfigName, the current mode's binding and the in-memory provider settings.
On any failure, restore all of them (deleting the profile if it did not exist before) and rebuild the task's API handler when the call was activating. If the restore itself fails, the existing "partial update" error is shown instead of the generic one.
Notes
Internal callers (Zoo Gateway refresh, OpenRouter/Requesty model refresh) go through the same path and now get the same validation.
The mode binding cannot be cleared through ProviderSettingsManager, so if the mode had no binding before a failed upsert, the new binding is left in place.
Tests
New: allow-list rejection touches no state; permitted profile accepted; activation failure restores the previous profile, mode binding and settings; failure deletes a profile that did not exist before. Updated: partial manager mocks gained hasConfig/getModeConfigId, and the "buildApiHandler error" test now asserts the rollback instead of the old "state was still updated". src suite (11,032 tests) and check-types pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Provider profiles are checked against organization access rules before changes are applied, with clearer messages when a profile is not allowed.
If profile activation or configuration fails, the previous profile and related settings are restored where possible. Newly created profiles are removed when activation fails.
Errors indicate when restoration is only partially successful.
Reliability
Improved failure handling helps preserve the active profile and its configuration, including mode-specific settings.
Provider profile upserts now check organization allow-lists before writing. The code snapshots profile and settings state, then attempts restoration if persistence or activation fails. Tests cover allow-list decisions and rollback behavior.
clearModeConfig removes and stores an existing mode binding. Tests cover absent bindings, a missing mode map, and secret-read errors.
Validation and rollback src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts
The upsert path checks the organization allow-list and snapshots state for restoration after failures. Tests cover accepted and rejected profiles, rollback of prior state, task handler rebuilding, and deletion of newly created profiles.

Explanation
The description includes the linked issue, problem statement, implementation details, rollback behavior, limitations, and test coverage. It omits the template checklist and several optional sections, including documentation impact and contact details, but the core required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2069] requires an allow-list rejection before writes and rollback of the profile, global metadata, active profile, mode binding, in-memory settings, and current task handler. upsertProviderProfile performs the allow-list check before snapshot and persistence. Its failure path restores each captured value, deletes a newly created profile, and rebuilds the current task handler. clearModeConfig restores a previously absent mode binding. The added tests cover rejection without state changes, rollback, absent-binding removal, task-specific configuration, and rollback failure reporting.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production code directly implements issue [#2069]. clearModeConfig supports the required rollback case. The manager and provider tests cover the new validation and transactional behavior. No unrelated production behavior is shown in the reviewed changes.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The changed upsert behavior has focused coverage. ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts covers allow-list rejection, permitted profiles, rollback of existing and new profiles, absent mode bindings, task-specific configuration, and rollback continuation with errors.update_profile_model_partial. ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts covers clearing bound, absent, and missing mode mappings plus storage failure. No durable UI change requires a Playwright snapshot. Prior failure addressed: The current diff adds a focused upsert test at ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts:462-487. It makes activation fail, makes mode-binding restoration fail, verifies other rollback steps run, and asserts errors.update_profile_model_partial.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior persistence failure is addressed. restoreProviderProfileState now calls clearModeConfig(mode) when no binding existed, and ProviderSettingsManager.clearModeConfig removes only an existing binding and reports storage errors. Rollback uses Promise.allSettled, checks failures, and shows the partial-state error when restoration fails. The added regression test covers an initially unbound mode after activation failure. Prior failure addressed: ClineProvider.ts now clears an absent prior mode binding during rollback. ProviderSettingsManager.ts adds clearModeConfig, with tests for removal, absent bindings, and storage failure; ClineProvider.apiHandlerRebuild.spec.ts tests the unbound rollback case.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path can be shown to leak a listener, watcher, timer, provider, or task. The new rollback calls the existing Task.updateApiConfiguration only for the same task still current, so it does not rebuild a disposed or replaced task. Task.updateApiConfiguration retires the previous API handler, and Task disposal releases current and retired handlers. clearModeConfig only removes persisted mode data.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
The changed upsert path can bypass the organization allow-list. upsertProviderProfile gets the list through getState before calling ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1893-1905). getState catches CloudService.instance.getAllowList() errors and keeps ORGANIZATION_ALLOW_ALL (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:3192-3200). If an organization has a restricted list but the cloud service or settings fetch fails during an upsert, any provider and model pass validation and persistProviderProfile saves and activates the unvalidated profile.
Resolution
Make allow-list retrieval fail closed for upsertProviderProfile. Do not treat an unavailable allow-list as ORGANIZATION_ALLOW_ALL; abort before snapshotProviderProfileState or any persistence when retrieval fails. Add a regression test that rejects getAllowList and verifies that saveConfig, activation writes, and context updates are not called.

Remove a newly created mode binding during rollback.
When activate is true and the mode has no previous binding, persistProviderProfile starts setModeConfig(mode, id) with the other activation writes. If another activation write rejects, Promise.allSettled throws after the mode write can succeed. restoreProviderProfileState skips mode restoration when snapshot.modeConfigId is unset. The rollback can then delete a newly created profile while leaving the mode bound to its deleted ID.
Add a manager operation that removes the mode key, and call it for an unset snapshot.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Add a test for a rejected write in clearModeConfig.
The ClearModeConfig block covers only a rejected read. clearModeConfig wraps both the removal and the store call in one try, and it rethrows any error as Failed to clear mode config. No test sets the secrets store to reject, so a future change that swallowed a failed write would pass all three tests. The suggested test covers that path. Its fixture uses the block's existing profilesWithModes helper with a code binding, so the mode is present and store runs once. mockRejectedValueOnce applies to that single call.
