[Fix] Mode profile choices leak between VS Code windows - #2110
The mode -> provider profile map is stored in shared extension storage, so every VS Code window reads and writes the same one. Selecting a profile in window 2 overwrote the entry window 1 relied on, and a subtask started from window 1 in a different mode (also mode switches and history restore) picked up window 2's model config.
Fix
ClineProvider keeps an in-memory map of the profiles chosen in its own window and checks it before the shared map. All mode-profile lookups and writes go through two helpers (getModeConfigId / setModeConfig); the shared write is unchanged.
Limitations
The per-window map is not persisted across window reloads.
Modes this window has not touched still fall back to the shared value.
Tests
Added a regression test in ClineProvider.spec.ts. ClineProvider suites and check-types pass.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Mode-specific provider profile selections now remain correctly scoped to the current window.
A window’s explicit profile selection takes precedence over both its opening settings and conflicting shared settings.
Modes without a window-specific selection use the profile mapping captured when the window opened, or shared settings when no opening mapping is available.
Missing, unconfigured, or outdated saved profiles continue to fall back without replacing the parent task’s profile.
ClineProvider now keeps mode-to-profile selections per window. It snapshots shared settings at window startup, applies local selections before the snapshot, and uses current persisted settings when a mode is absent from the snapshot. Mode flows and delegation use this lookup.

ClineProvider snapshots the shared mode-to-profile mapping at startup. Local selections take precedence over the snapshot; current persisted settings provide a fallback for modes absent from it. Writes update local and persisted mappings. ProviderSettingsManager returns a copy of the stored mapping. Tests cover precedence, fallback, snapshot-read failure, reset, and map-copy behavior.
History restoration, mode switching, profile activation, reset, and delegation use the window-aware mode profile helpers. Test setups initialize the snapshot, and delegation tests verify local precedence and fallback behavior.

The description links issue #2109, explains the problem, describes the implementation and limitations, and reports regression tests and type-check results. It does not reproduce every template heading or checklist item, but it contains the required core information.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2109 requires independent model configuration selections across VS Code windows. ClineProvider captures the opening mode map, stores later selections in localModeConfigIds, and resolves local values before the shared map. Mode switching, history restoration, profile activation, and delegation use this lookup. The regression tests cover local precedence, opening-snapshot fallback, shared fallback, and reset behavior. The delegation tests cover the automatic child-task path.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes in ClineProvider.ts and ProviderSettingsManager.ts implement the window-local mode-profile lookup. The changes in ClineProvider.spec.ts, delegation tests, and ProviderSettingsManager.spec.ts provide coverage for that behavior and its storage read. The supplied change summary shows no unrelated product changes.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets the security failure condition. The production changes add a per-window map and a snapshot of mode-to-profile IDs, then use those IDs to select existing provider profiles. The new settings method returns only a shallow copy of persisted IDs. Profile loading still resolves IDs through ProviderSettingsManager, and task creation still enforces ProfileValidator.isProfileAllowed. No changed code exposes secrets or PII, executes input, or removes an approval or allowlist check.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle resource path is present. The PR adds one-shot mode-map reads and in-memory maps; getModeConfigIds() only runs a locked secrets read and creates no listener, watcher, timer, task, or provider. captureInitialModeConfigIds() is called at construction and reset, and its rejection is handled. The changed setModeConfig path performs a normal persisted write. Existing ClineProvider.dispose() still disposes resources and removes the provider instance. No changed path leaks a resource or duplicates work after cancellation, disposal, or restart.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The changed persistence path has a partial-failure defect. ClineProvider.setModeConfig updates localModeConfigIds at lines 1863-1865 before the awaited providerSettingsManager.setModeConfig write completes. If the shared secret write fails, the caller rejects but the window-local map retains the failed profile ID. Later mode switching, history restoration, or delegation reads that ID and can use a profile that was never persisted. Reload then loses the failed choice. The added tests do not cover a rejected write.
Resolution
Update localModeConfigIds only after the awaited shared write succeeds, or save the previous local entry and restore it in a catch block before rethrowing. Add a regression test that rejects providerSettingsManager.setModeConfig and verifies getModeConfigId still returns the previous local, snapshot, or shared value.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The constructor snapshot behavior lacks focused coverage. ClineProvider calls captureInitialModeConfigIds() in the constructor, but the test setup overwrites initialModeConfigIds with an empty promise, and the snapshot tests assign the private field directly. A broken constructor snapshot would pass. The public API.setConfiguration path still writes directly through providerSettingsManager.setModeConfig; its existing test checks only manager calls on a fake provider. It does not verify the new window-local map, so a configuration set through this API can be ignored by later local/snapshot lookups.
Resolution
Add a test that constructs ClineProvider without replacing initialModeConfigIds, verifies the opening snapshot wins after shared storage changes, and covers snapshot-read failure. Route API.setConfiguration mode mappings through a ClineProvider window-local write method, then add an API integration test that verifies the local lookup reflects those mappings.

Clear cached mode IDs during reset.
resetState() resets stored profiles but leaves localModeConfigIds intact. After a reset, this lookup can return an ID for a removed profile; handleModeSwitchUnlocked then finds no matching profile and keeps the current configuration instead of using the reset mapping. Clear the cache as part of resetState(). As per path instructions, “Check listeners, resources, and providers are disposed without stale state or duplicate work.”

Snapshot mode choices before another window changes them.
If this window has not written a mode selection, every lookup reads the current shared value. For example, window A can start a task with its existing configuration, window B can select a different profile for the child's mode, and window A's delegation at Line 3991 will load B's profile. The documented untouched-mode fallback therefore still permits the cross-window subtask leak described by the linked issue. Capture each window's initial mode mapping before later shared writes can change its choices, and test delegation after a second window changes the target mode. As per path instructions, “Trace changed inputs through normal, boundary, error, cancellation, retry, and default paths and their direct test counterparts.”

The mode -> provider profile map lives in shared extension storage, so a
profile selected in one VS Code window leaked into subtasks and mode
switches in other windows. Prefer this window's own choices and fall back
to the shared map.

Do not fall back to shared mode profiles after a failed snapshot.
If getModeConfigIds() rejects during construction, initialModeConfigIds stays {} until the window resets. Modes this window has not changed then read the shared map, so another window's later selection can reach this window's mode switches and delegated subtasks. The only signal is a log line. This failure path predates the change, which reads the shared map for every mode. A safe correction is not established: a later re-read would capture the other window's selection, not the opening state.

Update the `getModeConfigIds()` snapshot failure path so a rejected snapshot
cannot leave `initialModeConfigIds` as `{}` and cause unchanged modes to fall

selection and delegated subtasks do not use another window’s later shared

Add a test that exercises the constructor snapshot capture.
The shared fixture at ClineProvider.spec.ts:557 replaces the constructor snapshot with {} for every test in that file. The snapshot tests then inject initialModeConfigIds directly or call captureInitialModeConfigIds() themselves. No test constructs a provider with a stored mode mapping, changes that mapping in storage, and checks the lookup. If the constructor call at ClineProvider.ts:410 is removed, the snapshot stays {} and lookups fall through to the shared value. No current test fails. Add a test that builds a provider with a seeded modeApiConfigs mapping, changes that mapping afterward, and asserts that getModeConfigId still returns the value captured at construction.

Restore the window-local mode entry when the shared write fails.
setModeConfig stores the new profile ID in localModeConfigIds before it awaits the shared write. If providerSettingsManager.setModeConfig rejects, the local entry keeps the new ID. Later mode lookups in this window then select that profile, while the shared map and later windows keep the previous ID.

Clear the other windows' cached mode choices, or drop stale entries on lookup miss.
resetState() clears only the calling window's localModeConfigIds map. Another live window keeps its own map. After reset, that window's mode switch to a mode it changed earlier finds no profile for its cached ID. It skips both activation and the default-save branch. It also never reads the shared mapping, so a valid mapping written later by another window for that mode is ignored until the window reloads. Drop a local entry when its profile no longer exists in listConfig(), then fall back to the shared mapping.

Selecting a profile in window 2 overwrote the entry window 1 relied on, and a subtask started from window 1 in a different mode (also mode switches and history restore) picked up window 2's model config.
Fix
ClineProviderkeeps an in-memory map of the profiles chosen in its own window and checks it before the shared map. All mode-profile lookups and writes go through two helpers (getModeConfigId/setModeConfig); the shared write is unchanged.Limitations
