No approved, assigned Zoo Code issue covers this change yet, so this PR does not include a Closes: line. Per CONTRIBUTING.md, a maintainer must confirm an assigned issue before this can merge. Related but not equivalent: #985 (open, bug, unassigned).

Summary

Port simurg79/Roo-Code#15, authored by Bertan Ari in upstream commit d9d96e47006786acbb05d6ef0ee7a927f91f8f12.

  • Report failed diff blocks together instead of overwriting every error except the last. Bound output to five detailed failures (4000 characters each), then one-line summaries (200 characters each), with at most 50 reported failures and a remainder count.
  • Diagnose likely mistyped start-line markers only after matching fails; marker-like file content remains valid.
  • Explain partial success as Applied X of Y diff blocks (parser-provided blockCount) and ask for only failed blocks to be resent.
  • Security: failure diagnostics no longer contain file or search text. The strategy no longer emits Search Content, Best Match Found or Original Content sections; it reports similarity, threshold, Levenshtein distance, lengths, best-match line location and constant tips. ApplyDiffTool never forwards DiffResult.details, on single, multi-block, partial-success and fallback paths, so neither the model result nor the diff_error UI message can contain them.

Test Procedure

  • pnpm --dir src exec vitest run core/diff core/tools: 34 files, 781 passed, 5 skipped.
  • New regression tests run the real strategy with synthetic markers in file, search and details fields and assert they are absent from the tool result, diff_error message and recorded tool error for single, multiple, partial-success and fallback cases.
  • Pre-push hook: full turbo lint and turbo check-types passed; Prettier applied. No ESLint suppression changes.
  • Environment: Node 24.15.0 (repo requests 22.23.1); Vitest from the repository toolchain via pnpm exec. CI remains authoritative.

Known upstream limitations

The SEARCH-marker regex count is advisory. Diff block N of M labels enumerate failed entries, not original request positions.

Pre-Submission Checklist

  • Issue Linked: blocked on maintainer-assigned issue (see above).
  • Scope: focused on apply_diff failure reporting.
  • Self-Review: done.
  • Testing: regression tests added.
  • Documentation Impact: none required.

No changesets or changelog entries. Implementation, testing and review were AI-assisted.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Diff failures now include a targeted hint when a malformed start-line marker may have been treated as search text, while valid markers and ordinary failed searches avoid the hint.
    • Failure reports combine multiple unsuccessful changes and provide best-match locations without echoing file or search text. Long error messages and failure lists are shortened, with notices when details are omitted.
    • After partial application, reports estimate how many blocks were applied, clarify that unsuccessful changes were not applied, and guide retries to include only failed blocks still needed.

The diff strategy now provides best-match location diagnostics and malformed-marker hints after failures. Successful results include a parsed block count. ApplyDiffTool combines failed-part errors, limits their output, and reports estimated applied blocks with retry guidance.

Changes: Diff failure diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Diff strategy diagnostics
src/core/diff/strategies/multi-search-replace.ts, src/core/diff/strategies/__tests__/multi-search-replace*.spec.ts
No-match errors report best-match locations and lengths without including file or search text. The strategy adds a hint for likely malformed start-line markers after matching fails. Successful results include the parsed block count. Tests cover marker forms, matching behavior, and diagnostic content.
ApplyDiffTool failure reporting
src/shared/tools.ts, src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts, src/core/tools/__tests__/applyDiffTool.failureReporting.spec.ts
ApplyDiffTool combines failed parts and limits detailed and abbreviated output. It omits detail fields and reports estimated applied and failed block counts with retry guidance. Successful DiffResult values can include an optional blockCount. Tests cover failure output, truncation, content omission, and partial application.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

The prior content-exposure path is addressed. MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy no longer places search text, best-match text, or original-file excerpts in failure errors; it reports only lengths, scores, locations, and fixed guidance. ApplyDiffTool never renders DiffResult.details, and both failure and partial-apply paths format only failed error strings. The new regression tests inject file, search, and detail secrets and assert that model, UI, recorded-error, and partial-apply outputs exclude them. No changed path bypasses access validation, approval, or executes unvalidated input. Prior failure addressed: The current strategy removes Search Content, Best Match Found, and Original Content from failPart.error. ApplyDiffTool omits details on fallback, failure, and partial-apply paths. Added tests verify secret-like values are absent from all relevant outputs.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. In ApplyDiffTool, the PR does not alter the awaited persistence calls: saveDirectly and saveChanges remain awaited at lines 180 and 225. The new partial-apply logic runs after those calls and reports Applied X of Y diff blocks, with retry guidance. MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy only returns in-memory content and blockCount; it does not write state. Existing DiffViewProvider.saveDirectly file writing is outside the PR diff.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

No changed lifecycle path can leak a resource or duplicate work. The PR changes diagnostic formatting, marker hints, failure counting, and the DiffResult.blockCount type. The changed ApplyDiffTool.execute path adds string formatting only; its reset() and processQueuedMessages() calls remain on the existing success, error, and catch paths. No added listener, watcher, timer, task, provider subscription, cancellation, disposal, or restart operation appears in the changed files.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the implementation, testing, security impact, limitations, and checklist status. However, it does not link an approved, assigned GitHub Issue, which the repository template requires.

Resolution

Link this pull request to an approved, assigned GitHub Issue and replace the current issue note with a valid Closes: #123 entry. Complete or explicitly address the remaining template sections, including Documentation Updates and Contribution Guidelines, if required by the repository process.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The PR changes durable chat content shown to users, but it adds no Playwright component snapshot. ApplyDiffTool now sends new multi-failure and truncated diagnostics through task.say("diff_error", formattedError) (src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts:95-117). Task.say persists that message (src/core/task/Task.ts:2843-2858), and ChatRow renders it through ErrorRow (webview-ui/src/components/chat/ChatRow.tsx:1037-1047). The new tests assert mocked tool results and task.say calls (src/core/tools/__tests__/applyDiffTool.failureReporting.spec.ts:166-176,357-375), but no Playwright visual test or snapshot covers the changed diff_error rendering.

Resolution

Add a Playwright component visual test for the diff_error chat state with representative multi-block, abbreviated, and truncated diagnostics. Commit the generated snapshots and verify the persisted message renders without clipping or layout regressions.

Thanks for contributing. This comment tracks the review sequence and the next action.

Current step: Fix the failing required CI checks; awaiting-maintainer requires CI and automated review completion.

Review-state labels are managed by this workflow; do not edit them manually. community-approved is managed the same way — do not add or remove it manually. It signals a fresh community code approval for the current head as an advisory priority only; maintainer review is still required.

Count only parser-recognized SEARCH blocks.

An escaped literal \<<<<<<< SEARCH can occur in SEARCH content. The parser keeps it inside the block and later removes the escape. If another block fails, this branch can report Applied 2 of 3 even though only one of two parsed blocks applied. Count only unescaped, line-level SEARCH markers.

Suggested fix
-			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/<<<<<<< SEARCH/g) || []).length
+			const searchBlocks = (diffContent.match(/(?:^|\n)(?<!\\)<<<<<<< SEARCH>?[ \t]*(?=\r?\n|$)/g) || []).length

Addressed both findings in 8dc9441: the partial-apply message no longer claims failed changes are absent (it now tells the model to inspect the saved file before retrying), and the marker-hint test asserts the full replacement content. Focused tests (48) and eslint pass locally; CI is green. @coderabbitai review

src/core/tools/ApplyDiffTool.ts:237-248
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the repaired block count for partial-apply reporting.

repairTruncatedDiff can split an inline unescaped <<<<<<< SEARCH marker into a second block. For example, a marker in replacement text can produce two parsed blocks even though the whole-line regex finds one. If the first block applies and the second fails, this reports Applied 0 of 1 instead of Applied 1 of 2.

Return the parsed block count from MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy and use it in ApplyDiffTool instead of recounting raw marker lines.

Addressed the outside-diff finding in 5884f8c: the strategy now returns the parsed block count, and ApplyDiffTool uses it, falling back to raw marker lines only when the count is absent. Added a parser regression test for an inline marker that repair splits into a second block, plus a tool test. 135 focused tests, eslint, and tsc pass; CI is green. @coderabbitai review

Re the Security Boundaries pre-merge error: this PR does not create that exposure. On origin/main, ApplyDiffTool.ts:90-107 already forwards failPart.error plus JSON details inside error_details, and multi-search-replace.ts:544-580 already builds Search Content, Best Match Found and Original Content. This PR changes how many failures are reported and how they are formatted, not what diagnostics exist. The content is the user's workspace file that the model can already read with read_file; it is the tool's core retry diagnostic. Redacting it would be a separate behavior change outside this PR's scope. Per .coderabbit.yaml, a defect this PR does not create belongs in follow-up candidates, not changes requested. A maintainer needs to decide whether to use the reviewers-only override or open a follow-up issue. The Description check is only a warning.

…ly reports

Only the first failed block keeps Search/Best Match/Original Content sections (main parity); later blocks and the partial-apply result keep diagnostics only.

@coderabbitai review

Addressed the Security Boundaries pre-merge finding in 81aebb17. An independent data-flow check confirmed part of it:

  • Partial-apply path: confirmed new exposure. On main, the partial-apply hint contained no file content. This PR had started appending Search Content / Best Match Found / Original Content excerpts after a write approval that covered only the diff. These excerpts are now removed. Each failed block appears only as its diagnostics: the reason, similarity score, tips and the malformed-marker hint. Details JSON is omitted too.
  • Failure path: amplified, now reduced to main's level. On main, the loop overwrote the message, so the model received exactly one failed part with its file excerpt, uncapped. This PR could send up to five excerpts. Now only the first failed block keeps its excerpt (still capped at 4000 chars). Blocks 2–5 are cut at the strategy's own \n\nSearch Content:\n heading, which always comes before the file sections. Blocks 6–50 stay one-line summaries.
  • Not changed: broad secret/PII redaction of the single excerpt main already sends. A failing apply_diff returning one excerpt from a .rooignore-allowed file is existing behaviour on main and outside this PR's scope. This PR no longer adds to that exposure.

Regression tests use a SECRET_TOKEN=abc123 sentinel and check:

  • with multiple failures, only one Original Content: appears;
  • a single failure is unchanged;
  • the cut happens at the first heading even when the search text repeats it;
  • the diff_error UI message matches what the model receives;
  • the partial-apply output contains no Search Content:, Best Match Found:, Original Content:, Details: or sentinel.

Results: 140 tests pass across the ApplyDiffTool and multi-search-replace suites; ESLint is clean with no suppression increase; tsc --noEmit passes.

The Description check warning (no linked issue) is unchanged: this is a port of upstream PR15, and there is no approved issue to link.

Stop echoing search, best-match and original file content from failed SEARCH blocks and never forward DiffResult details. Failures now carry numeric scores, line locations and constant hints for single, multi-block, partial-success and fallback paths.

Addressed in 02db12b. Security Boundaries: `MultiSearchReplaceDiffStrategy` no longer emits Search Content / Best Match Found / Original Content; failures carry only numeric scores, lengths, best-match line location and constant hints. `ApplyDiffTool` never renders `DiffResult.details` on single, multi, partial-success or fallback paths. Regression tests in applyDiffTool.failureReporting.spec.ts use the real strategy with synthetic markers in file/search/details fields and assert absence in the tool result, diff_error UI message and recorded error. Description: no approved, assigned issue exists for this change; the PR body now states this instead of claiming a link, pending maintainer assignment. @coderabbitai review

@simurg79 Thanks for the update. I inspected 02db12bf7. The diff removes file/search excerpts from matching-failure diagnostics and removes DiffResult.details from tool error output. The new tests cover model output, UI messages, and recorded errors.

I’ll trigger a review of the new changes. I have not run the tests. The missing approved, assigned issue remains pending maintainer assignment.

Do not echo the malformed marker.

If a failed SEARCH block starts with :123456789, this hint includes that search line in the error. The new no-match diagnostic therefore still exposes search text, including a possible numeric identifier. Describe the marker shape without interpolating firstSearchLine.
