ExcelJS reads the cells of a formula filled down or across as
{ sharedFormula, result }, which the "formula" in value check missed, so
they read as [object Object]. A formula result also went through
toString(), so an error result read as [object Object] and a date result
as a local-time JS date string. Every Date was cut to its ISO date, so a
date-time lost its time and a time of day or a duration read as
1899-12-30 or 1899-12-31.
Read a formula's result like a plain value (cell.formula gives the text
of a shared formula without one). Keep the time of a date-time, and read
a cell whose number format shows no day or year as a time of day, or as
an elapsed duration for [h], [m] and [s], counted from the workbook's
day 0.

Can we classify month-only formats such as mmm as calendar dates so they do not become 00:00:00?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes, in 9ec4fa1. A format with a month and no hour or second beside it (mmm, mmmm) now counts as a date, so it reads as the ISO date instead of 00:00:00. The elapsed check runs first, because once its brackets are stripped [h]:mm leaves only :mm, which the month rule would otherwise take for a date. The dates test has an mmmm cell for it.

Would stripping backslash-escaped literals prevent h:mm \d from being misclassified as a calendar date?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes. Escaped characters are now skipped like quoted text and [...] sections, so h:mm\ \d\a\i\l\y stays a time (18:00:00) instead of becoming a date on day 0. That case is in the times test, and dropping the \\. alternative from the regex makes it fail.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
A correction to my reply above, found while porting this to another reader. ExcelJS unescapes number-format codes when it loads a file: a workbook saved with h:mm\ \d\a\i\l\y arrives as h:mm daily, so the backslashes are gone before formatDate sees the code. Skipping escapes therefore helps only workbooks built in memory, as the test does and as extractTextFromXLSX(workbook) allows. For a file, a backslash-escaped d/y in a time format still reads as a date. Quoted text such as h:mm" daily" survives loading and is handled. The same goes for a format that is only an elapsed bracket ([ss], [h]): ExcelJS does not treat it as a date format, so such a cell from a file stays a number. I kept both branches because they are correct for in-memory workbooks, and I can drop them if you prefer.

Nice! Thanks for this fix, had one edge case which we should address please.

For a cell inside a merged range, ExcelJS returns the master's value object, so "formula" in value is true. But cell.result and cell.formula look undefined on a merged cell. Would this print [Formula: undefined] for the non-master cells of a merged formula? main read value.result there. Reading from cell.master when cell.type === ExcelJS.ValueType.Merge might cover it, plus a merged-cell test.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Good catch, it did. The new test reproduces it on the previous commit: every cell of a merged formula but the first printed [Formula: undefined]. Fixed in 3799c56. formatCellValue now reads a merged range through cell.master when cell.type === ExcelJS.ValueType.Merge, so each cell of the range shows the top-left result, as main did through value.result. The test covers merged formulas with a number, a cached 0 and a date result.
The other cells of a merged range return the top-left cell's value object, but cell.result and cell.formula are undefined on them, so a merged formula printed [Formula: undefined] in every cell but the first. Read the range through cell.master, as main did through value.result. Elapsed durations now show seconds only when the format has them: [h]:mm of 36 hours reads 36:00, as Excel shows it.
Main made extractTextFromXLSX take only a Buffer (Zoo-Code-Org#2002) and moved the workbook tests to formatWorkbook. The tests this branch adds still passed a Workbook to extractTextFromXLSX, which no longer type-checks.

Description
formatCellValueinsrc/integrations/misc/extract-text-from-xlsx.tsnow:sharedFormula, which is how ExcelJS reads the cells of a formula filled down or across ({ sharedFormula: "A1", result: 4 }). The result then goes through the same branches as a plain cell, so an error result reads[Error: #DIV/0!]and a date result is formatted like a date cell. A formula without a result still reads[Formula: …], now fromcell.formula, which also gives the translated text of a shared formula (B3*2).formatDate). ExcelJS returns a UTCDatefor any number with a date or time format. If the format shows a day or a year (checked outside quoted text and[...]sections, case-insensitively), the cell reads as an ISO date, plusHH:MM:SSwhen the value has a time of day. Otherwise it is a time of day (06:00:00), or, with[h],[m]or[s], an elapsed duration in total hours (36:00:00). Durations are counted from the workbook's day 0: 1899-12-30, or 1904-01-01 whendate1904is set. The value is rounded to the second first, as Excel shows it.Choices a reviewer may want to look at:
HH:MM:SS(h:mm AM/PMreads in 24-hour form), and an elapsed duration counts in the unit of its bracket:[h]asH:MM:SS,[m]as total minutes ([mm]:ssof 25 h 30 s reads1500:30),[s]as total seconds. A format with a month but no hour or second (mmm) counts as a date, and escaped characters are skipped like quoted text (review round 2).Datecell with no number format (as in the existing "should format dates correctly" test) reads as before.Test Procedure
