fix(task): merge stale partial reasoning snapshot instead of duplicating - #1708
Reasoning text could render twice: say()'s partial-dedup only inspected clineMessages.at(-1), so when any other message (an ask, a tool result, api_req_started, …) was appended while a reasoning stream was in flight, the stranded partial: true snapshot was no longer the last message. The final partial: false write then took the append branch and persisted a second reasoning entry — the duplicate partial:true/partial:false pair from the issue (identical but for a few trailing chars). The webview renders every stored say:"reasoning" message as its own block, so two stored blocks = two rendered blocks; the storage layer is the right fix layer.
Minimal fix in say() (following the analysis the reporter posted on the issue): both append branches now scan clineMessages backwards for a stranded snapshot — same type/say, partial === true, and prefix-related text (new.startsWith(old) || old.startsWith(new)) — and merge in place, keeping the original ts:
partial: true delta → merges into the stranded snapshot (no forked second partial entry).
partial: false final write → replaces the stranded snapshot in place (partial: false, original ts, saveClineMessages() + updateClineMessage).
Safety properties: the scan only runs for say-calls that pass partial (reasoning stream, rate-limit/retry notices, completion_result), requires the triple match (same say type + partial === true + prefix relation), and returns early for non-string text — unrelated message types and completed messages can never match. Behavior when no snapshot is stranded is byte-identical to before.
Test Procedure
src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts (+4 specs, new describe "say() stale partial snapshot dedup"):
final write merges into a snapshot stranded by an api_req_started interleave → single block, partial: false, saveClineMessages called
partial delta merges into a snapshot stranded by a tool ask
non-prefix-related text still appends (no over-merge)
a completed (partial: false) same-type message is not treated as a snapshot
Red→green verified: the 2 merge specs fail on main (duplicate stored); the 2 guard specs pass on both.
cd src && ./node_modules/.bin/vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts → 154/154 passed.
cd src && pnpm run check-types → 0 errors.
ESLint on both changed files → clean (suppression counts unchanged).

Issue Linked: This PR is linked to an approved GitHub Issue (see "Related GitHub Issue" above).
Scope: My changes are focused on the linked issue (one major feature/fix per PR).
Self-Review: I have performed a thorough self-review of my code.
Testing: New and/or updated tests have been added to cover my changes (if applicable).
Visual Snapshot (UI changes only): N/A — no UI changes (the duplicate render is fixed at the storage layer).
Documentation Impact: No documentation updates are required.
say() only inspected clineMessages.at(-1) when deciding whether a
partial/complete write updates an in-flight partial or appends a new
message. When another message (ask/tool/api_req) was appended while a
reasoning stream was in flight, the final write took the append branch
and persisted a second reasoning entry next to the orphaned partial:true
snapshot, rendering the same reasoning twice in Code mode.
In both append branches of say(), scan clineMessages backwards for a
stranded partial snapshot of the same say type with prefix-related text
and merge into it in place (keeping the original ts) instead of
appending. ClosesZoo-Code-Org#1346.

Bug Fixes
Related partial message updates now appear as a single message instead of creating duplicates, including when another message appears between updates.
Message timing is preserved as partial content is updated.
Unrelated messages and already completed messages remain separate.
Finalized messages are handled correctly when no text is available.
Updates are not displayed if saving a merged message fails.
Task.say now searches for stranded partial say snapshots with matching type and prefix-related string text. Matching partial or complete updates modify the existing snapshot. The changes preserve the existing append behavior when no match exists and add tests for matching, non-matching, and save-failure cases.
A helper finds the latest matching partial snapshot. Partial updates reuse and save the snapshot before updating the webview. Tests cover timestamp handling and save-before-webview ordering.
Completed snapshot updates and regression coverage src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts
Completed updates replace a matching snapshot in place and preserve its timestamp. Tests cover non-matching cases, undefined completion text, and failed saves that skip the webview update.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2247: Both changes handle persisted partial Task message snapshots. PR #2247 addresses trailing snapshots during task resume.
Zoo-Code-Org/Zoo-Code#2120: Both changes affect partial Task message updates. PR #2120 throttles webview and event updates.

The deduplication fix is mergeable with awareness that stranded reasoning streams perform additional full-history writes, potentially slowing updates in long conversations. Save coalescing can remain a follow-up.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1346 requires one stored reasoning entry after an interleaved message. Task.say now scans backward for a same-type, same-say, partial: true snapshot with prefix-related string text. It merges partial and final writes in place, preserves the original timestamp for completion, saves before the webview update, and keeps the append path when no match exists. The added Task.spec.ts coverage includes interleaving, guard cases, undefined text, timestamp and lastMessageTs behavior, and save-before-update failure handling.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production change is limited to stale partial-message deduplication in Task.say. The added tests verify issue #1346 behavior, persistence ordering, and failure handling. No unrelated production feature or unrelated test change is identified.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
Focused Task-level regression coverage exists for the changed behavior. The added specs exercise backward stale-snapshot merges for partial and complete writes, interleaved messages, prefix and non-prefix text, completed-message and different-say guards, undefined completion text, timestamp and lastMessageTs handling, save-before-webview ordering, and failed-save suppression for both merge paths. The tests assert stored message outcomes and use real Task.say() behavior rather than mirroring implementation. The change is in message storage and webview posting; it does not introduce a durable visible UI component change, so no Playwright component snapshot is required.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path introduces a security-boundary failure. Task.say only scans existing in-memory clineMessages for a same-type, partial === true message with prefix-related text, then persists it and posts the resulting message. The change does not execute text, access secrets or PII, or alter approval/allowlist controls. updateClineMessage and saveClineMessages use existing message-storage and webview paths.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
The prior persistence defect is addressed. Both changed stale-merge paths in src/core/task/Task.ts await saveClineMessages() before updateClineMessage() and skip the webview update when the save returns false (partial merge around lines 2824-2834; complete merge around lines 2887-2902). saveClineMessages() returns false when saveTaskMessages fails. The changed tests cover deferred save ordering and save failure for both merge paths. The persistence layer uses temporary-file replacement and rollback in safeWriteJson, so no changed path introduces an unawaited or non-atomic write. Prior failure addressed: Task.ts now stores the save result in both stale-merge branches, logs failure, and skips updateClineMessage on false. Task.spec.ts adds failure tests for both partial and complete merges.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
No changed lifecycle path meets the failure condition. The diff only adds backward scanning and in-place message merging inside Task.say(). It does not create or retain listeners, watchers, providers, timers, or tasks. The new saveClineMessages() and updateClineMessage() calls use existing resource paths and do not duplicate work after cancellation, disposal, or restart.

Persistence Integrity finding addressed at head bcd3879: the stranded-partial delta-merge branch in Task.say now awaits saveClineMessages() before the webview updateClineMessage post (mirroring the sibling complete-merge branches). Regression test pins the ordering with a deferred save — it fails if the awaited save is removed (157/157 Task tests; lifecycle model-check all six submodels pass).
Add a completed-write reject test for unrelated stranded text.
The new suite rejects unrelated text only for partial=true writes. The completed-write path (partial=false) has the same prefix guard, and no test checks that it rejects unrelated stranded text. A regression that drops the prefix check there would overwrite the stranded segment and still pass the suite.
As per path instructions, "Require regression coverage at the lowest valid harness with behavior-focused assertions, including relevant negative, error, false/unset, and boundary cases."

What: both stale-snapshot merge branches in Task#say (the partial merge and the
complete merge) now capture the boolean from `saveClineMessages()` and, when it
is false, log `[Task#say] saveClineMessages failed; skipping webview update` and
return without posting `messageUpdated`.
Why: `saveClineMessages` returns false when `saveTaskMessages` rejects, leaving
the on-disk record stale while the in-memory message is already merged. Posting
the merged row anyway lets a reload restore the pre-merge text (partial branch)
or a spinner over a finished message (complete branch). The method's own
docstring mandates that callers gating UI updates on durable state skip them,
and `finalizePartialToolAsk` already follows that shape.
Impact: a failed write no longer desynchronizes the webview from disk; the
in-memory merge still happens and the next `saveClineMessages()` repairs the
record. Success path is unchanged.
What: three changes in the `say() stale partial snapshot dedup` block.
- The completing-write spec clears `saveSpy` after the interleaved message and
before the final `say`, then asserts `toHaveBeenCalledTimes(1)`.
- The interleaved-ask spec pushes its hand-rolled ask with a distinct `askTs`
and sets `lastMessageTs` to it, so the partial merge is asserted to leave
`lastMessageTs` on the ask; the complete merge is then pinned to re-stamp it
with the snapshot ts.
- Two new specs drive `saveClineMessages` to `false` in each merge branch and
assert the webview post is skipped and the failure is logged.
Why: `addToClineMessages` also calls `saveClineMessages` (Task.ts:1691), so an
uncleared spy was satisfied by the initial partial append and stayed green even
with the completing save deleted. The ask spec likewise started with
`lastMessageTs` already equal to the snapshot ts, so a regression that re-stamped
it during the partial merge went unseen. Both were vacuous assertions.
Impact: the specs now fail when the behavior they name is removed (verified by
scratch mutations of both production lines), and the new failure-path specs are
red on the previous head and green with the gate in place.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This early return skips all of updateClineMessage, not just the webview post. That also skips the Message "updated" emit that api.ts forwards to IPC/CLI consumers, and the cloud capture. The existing complete branch is ungated and still emits. Is it intended that these consumers never see the completed row when the save fails?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
You are right, and I am not going to change it in this round: this is a policy question and it should be your call, not mine.
The asymmetry is real and it is wider than the two branches you pointed at. Three sibling branches in say() currently have three different durability policies:
branch
line
save result used?
post gated?
partial, in-place update (at(-1))
Task.ts:2811-2823
no save at all
no
partial, stale merge
Task.ts:2840-2857
yes
yes (return)
complete, in-place update (at(-1))
Task.ts:2888-2895
discarded
no
complete, stale merge
Task.ts:2917-2926
yes
yes (return)
finalizePartialToolAsk (precedent)
Task.ts:3024-3030
yes
yes
So the gate you are asking about is also present in the in-repo precedent I copied it from. Fixing it properly means deciding the policy once, not patching one branch.
The design I would propose: split the gate.
updateClineMessage does three things (Task.ts:1746-1763): postMessageToWebview({ type: "messageUpdated" }), emit(RooCodeEventName.Message, { action: "updated" }), and the cloud capture. Only the first one is a rendered view of durable state. The other two are notifications that in-memory state changed, and the in-memory merge happened unconditionally in both branches.
Webview post: stays gated on the save result. A reload would restore the stale disk text, so posting the merged row would let the rendered view disagree with disk.
Message emit + cloud capture: ungated.api.ts:531-537 forwards this to IPC/CLI consumers, and those consumers never reload clineMessages from disk. Suppressing the emit makes their view of in-memory truth wrong, which is a worse failure than the one the gate prevents. The cloud capture is keyed by ts in cloudSyncedMessageTimestamps, so an ungated capture does not double-report.
That is a net deletion: both branches lose the return and keep one if around the post. It also makes the two stale-merge branches agree with the complete in-place branch on the emit, which is the asymmetry you named.
The counter-argument, which is why I am not pre-empting you: it inverts two existing specs that currently assert updateSpy was not called at all (Task.spec.ts "skips the webview post and logs when the partial-merge save fails" and the complete-merge sibling). Those specs pin the current behavior, so changing the policy means rewriting them, and a reviewer could reasonably read that as tests being written to the implementation. If you prefer durability-first, the current gate stands and this thread resolves as answered-by-design.
Say the word and I will implement the split gate in a follow-up commit on this branch, with the two specs inverted to assert "emit fired, post did not" and a red-on-head proof that the emit is currently suppressed when saveClineMessages returns false.
What: `findStalePartialSaySnapshotIndex` now rejects an empty incoming text and
skips stored snapshots whose text is empty, so `m.text.startsWith("")` can no
longer match every same-type partial row.
Why: `AttemptCompletionTool` passes `result ?? ""` with `block.partial`
forwarded (AttemptCompletionTool.ts:312), and `abortStream` only clears
`partial` on `.at(-1)` (Task.ts:4180). An abandoned partial `completion_result`
row therefore survived, and an empty completion adopted it: the streaming write
overwrote the dead row's text, and the completing write finalized it in place
(`partial: false`) and re-stamped `lastMessageTs` with the dead row's ts, so an
abandoned attempt was persisted and rendered as this turn's completion.
Impact: empty writes now append their own row instead of resurrecting a dead
one. Prefix-based dedup for non-empty text is unchanged.
What: after the first stale-snapshot merge, the merged row is spliced out of
its old position and pushed to the end of `clineMessages`. `ts` is not touched.
Why: a merged row that stays in its old position is never `at(-1)`, so every
later delta of the same stream re-entered the stranded-merge branch and awaited
a full `saveClineMessages()` (structuredClone of the whole history plus
metadata) inside the stream loop. Moving it to the tail restores the in-place
fast path, so one stranding costs one save instead of one per delta.
The move also restores the ordering the pre-merge code produced: on main a
stranded delta appended a fresh partial row at the tail, so the tail was the
row carrying the newest content. The in-place merge left that row behind the
intervening message, which is the only place this PR changed array order.
`ts` stays untouched because it is the webview's virtuoso key (Task.ts:4180).
Impact: one awaited save per stranding instead of per delta; array order
matches content recency again.
Two of the three review threads are fixed and resolved; the third is a policy question left open for you.
Fixes
a372707d7 — never merge into a stale partial snapshot on empty text (Task.ts:2775, thread UPij)
m.text.startsWith("") is true for every stored text, so an empty write matched any earlier same-type partial row. AttemptCompletionTool.handlePartial passes result ?? "" with block.partial forwarded, and abortStream only clears partial on .at(-1), so an abandoned partial completion_result row could survive a turn and be adopted by the next empty completion: finalized in place as this turn's completion, with lastMessageTs re-stamped to the dead row's ts.
The guard rejects empty text on both sides. The incoming-side check is what blocks the reachable path; filtering only stored text would leave the degenerate match reachable for an empty stored row.
The api_req_started floor was not taken. It has to reconcile with auto-retry re-emitting api_req_started (Task.ts:4026-4031, retry push at Task.ts:4758-4763), and ClineMessage carries no request-identity field, so the boundary would be inferred from message order rather than stated.
ff56613ad — move a merged stranded snapshot to the tail (Task.ts:2832, thread UPih)
After the first stale merge the row is spliced out of its old position and pushed to the end. ts is untouched, so the virtuoso key contract at Task.ts:4180 holds.
Before: three deltas of one stranded stream awaited three full saveClineMessages() calls (each a structuredClone of the whole history plus metadata). After: one. The move also restores the ordering main produced, where a stranded delta appended its row at the tail, so array order matches content recency again.
Invariants pinned in the new spec, and mutation-checked by deleting just the two splice lines:
ts multiset unchanged across the stranding (a re-stamp fails it);
exactly one awaited full save for a multi-delta stranding (3 vs 1);
the tail is the row carrying the newest content.
Left open
Thread UPim (Task.ts:2911, skipped Message emit and cloud capture on save failure) got a design reply and stays open. The proposal is to split the gate: keep the webview post gated on the save result, ungate the Message emit and cloud capture, since api.ts consumers never reload from disk. That is a net deletion but it inverts two existing specs that pin the current behavior, so it is your call rather than a unilateral change.

Task.spec.ts 209/209, including all 12 specs in the stale-partial group.
398 tests across 8 files: Task.spec.ts, Task.persistence, Task.streaming-tool-calls, the four ask-* race specs, mergeMessageSnapshots, taskMessages, attemptCompletionTool.
Webview ChatView + ExtensionStateContext 78/78 (no render-order regression).
pnpm --dir src run check-types: 0 errors.
pnpm --dir src exec eslint --max-warnings=0 core/task/Task.ts core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts: clean. src/eslint-suppressions.json diff is empty; no suppression was added or pruned.
pnpm lifecycle:model-check: passes, all 8 submodels. No reducer or persistence-owner change in this round; the diff is Task.ts stream handling plus specs only.
Gate delta from CI attestation is pending this push.

Closes: #1346
Description
Reasoning text could render twice:
say()'s partial-dedup only inspectedclineMessages.at(-1), so when any other message (anask, a tool result,api_req_started, …) was appended while a reasoning stream was in flight, the strandedpartial: truesnapshot was no longer the last message. The finalpartial: falsewrite then took the append branch and persisted a second reasoning entry — the duplicatepartial:true/partial:falsepair from the issue (identical but for a few trailing chars). The webview renders every storedsay:"reasoning"message as its own block, so two stored blocks = two rendered blocks; the storage layer is the right fix layer.Minimal fix in
say()(following the analysis the reporter posted on the issue): both append branches now scanclineMessagesbackwards for a stranded snapshot — same type/say,partial === true, and prefix-related text (new.startsWith(old) || old.startsWith(new)) — and merge in place, keeping the originalts:partial: truedelta → merges into the stranded snapshot (no forked second partial entry).partial: falsefinal write → replaces the stranded snapshot in place (partial: false, originalts,saveClineMessages()+updateClineMessage).Safety properties: the scan only runs for say-calls that pass
partial(reasoning stream, rate-limit/retry notices, completion_result), requires the triple match (same say type +partial === true+ prefix relation), and returns early for non-string text — unrelated message types and completed messages can never match. Behavior when no snapshot is stranded is byte-identical to before.Test Procedure
src/core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts(+4 specs, new describe "say() stale partial snapshot dedup"):api_req_startedinterleave → single block,partial: false,saveClineMessagescalledaskpartial: false) same-type message is not treated as a snapshotmain(duplicate stored); the 2 guard specs pass on both.cd src && ./node_modules/.bin/vitest run core/task/__tests__/Task.spec.ts→ 154/154 passed.cd src && pnpm run check-types→ 0 errors.Pre-Submission Checklist
