📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The backend is prepared for Cloudflare Workers deployment. Express setup moves into a reusable application module, transaction workflows use dedicated Neon transaction access, scheduled cleanup moves to a Worker handler, and deployment scripts manage Wrangler secrets and the Vercel API proxy.

Changes

Cloudflare Workers migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Application runtime and startup
src/app.ts, src/index.ts, scripts/cleanup-sessions.ts, scripts/seed-admin.ts, routes/invites.ts
The Express application is centralized in src/app.ts. Node startup remains in src/index.ts. Cleanup and seed scripts no longer close a shared pool. Invite token generation uses the named randomBytes API.
Transaction-capable database access
src/db/db.ts, routes/classes.ts, routes/grades.ts, src/lib/auth.ts
The database module adds lazy Neon WebSocket access for transactions. Class enrollment, grade upserts, and invitation acceptance use withTransaction.
Worker runtime and Cloudflare configuration
src/worker.ts, src/config/arcjet.ts, tsconfig.json, wrangler.toml
A Worker handles HTTP requests and scheduled session cleanup. Arcjet trusts Cloudflare proxy headers. Worker types and a daily cron trigger are configured.
Deployment, secrets, and proxy tooling
package.json, scripts/prepare-wrangler-secrets.mjs, scripts/update-vercel-proxy.mjs, .dev.vars.example, .gitignore, CLOUDFLARE-DEPLOY.md
Wrangler scripts, secret preparation, deployment documentation, development variables, ignored secret files, and Vercel rewrite updates are added. The WebSocket database dependency is removed.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 9ce5d

This PR moves request handling and database transactions to a new provider/runtime split. It is mergeable with owner awareness of two bounded risks: transaction cleanup errors may make committed operations appear failed, and expired-session cleanup may no longer run during Node startup.

Keep automatic expired-session cleanup for Node starts.

package.json supports Node execution through start and dev, but src/index.ts no longer schedules cleanup. The cleanup:sessions script is manual, so Node starts can retain expired sessions. Restore a Node scheduler or remove these entry points.

To summarize:
Instead of using a typical Node server to host our express app, we switched to cloudflare workers which don't spin down. This means we needed to refactor how we deal with requests. The cloudflare worker recieves https requests then internally passes it to the express app thru httpsServerHandler. Instead of the backend being hosted on a node server constantly being up and listening for https requests directly. Because of this, we also changed the database connection from a websocket pool to http since the backend is not always active since cloudflare workers are request based. We only use websockets for transactions since those only work on websockets.

getTransactionDb() with a request-scoped transaction helper that creates a Neon
Pool, executes the transaction, and closes the pool in finally. Apply this

preserving each existing transaction’s behavior.
