fix(mcp): scrub the injected AI/ML API key from server responses - #1197
Zero sends the user's AI/ML API key to mcp.aimlapi.com (#1193). The key is never stored, and an HTTP error status is reported without its body, but everything else the server sends back reached the caller as the server wrote it:
a JSON-RPC error.message, on streamable HTTP (JSON or SSE replies) and on the legacy SSE stream
the method of an unexpected message, which the error quotes
the tool result, which is where MCP puts a failed tool call (isError), so it goes to the model
the endpoint of a legacy SSE stream that fails to parse, which the URL error quotes
A server that echoed the key would put it in any of those. This came up while merging main into #835 (note).
Change
injectedAIMLAPIKey reads the key back from the request a response answers (response.Request, the last redirect hop) under the existing sentAIMLAPIServiceKey rule, so only a key Zero attached is scrubbed. A user Authorization header, OAuth and project-configured servers are unchanged.
scrubAIMLAPIKeys replaces that key with [REDACTED] in the error text, the method and every string of the result before the client reads any of it. A result without the key keeps its original bytes.
The legacy SSE client scrubs both the key its stream request carried and the key on the POST, since the key is resolved per request and the answer arrives on the stream.
New redaction.RedactSecretValues runs only the split-aware known-value pass that RedactString applies to ExtraSecretValues. The shape patterns stay off, so tool output, schemas and base64 image data that never held the key are not rewritten.
docs/EXTENDING.md says what happens to an echoed key.
Tests
On main the new echo tests fail with the key in the output:
MCP initialize failed: invalid credential aiml0123456789abcdef0123456789abcd for this account
upstream rejected key aiml0123456789abcdef0123456789abcd
MCP initialize expected a response from server aimlapi, got method "notifications/aiml0123456789abcdef0123456789abcd" instead
MCP tools/list failed: invalid credential aiml0123456789abcdef0123456789abcd
parse MCP SSE endpoint URL: parse "/messages/aiml0123456789abcdef0123456789abcd%zz": invalid URL escape "%zz"
TestAIMLAPIMCPScrubsTheInjectedKeyFromResponses: JSON and SSE replies; error text, tool result (an image block in the same result stays byte-identical) and method; each echo whole, split by a NUL and split by a zero-width space. A result without the key keeps shape-like text such as password=hunter2.
TestAIMLAPIMCPSSEScrubsTheInjectedKeyFromStreamAnswers, and TestAIMLAPIMCPSSEScrubsTheStreamKeyAndThePostKey with the resolver handing the stream and the POST different keys.
TestAIMLAPIMCPLeavesResponsesAloneWithoutTheInjectedKey: a user Authorization header is not touched.
TestScrubAIMLAPIKeysKeepsAResultWithoutTheKeyByteForByte and TestRedactSecretValuesRemovesOnlyTheKnownValues
Each echo test checks that the fake server actually received the injected key, so none can pass by missing that path. Thirteen mutations are each caught by the test named for them: a plain strings.ReplaceAll instead of the split-aware pass (error text and result separately), no scrub on streamable HTTP, the stream key or the POST key dropped, the endpoint error unscrubbed, the result or the method unscrubbed, always re-encoding the result, scrubbing without the injection check, the stream key never recorded, and RedactSecretValues as a no-op or running the shape patterns.

Automatically supplied AI/ML API keys are redacted from server error messages, tool results, and streamed responses if echoed back.
HTTP errors involving an automatically supplied key no longer include the response body.
Documentation
Updated guidance to describe how echoed API keys and HTTP error responses are handled.
Zero injects the user's AI/ML API key into requests to mcp.aimlapi.com
(#1193) and keeps it out of config, but only an HTTP error status left
the server's text out. A JSON-RPC error message, the method of an
unexpected message, a tool result (MCP reports a failed tool call as a
result with isError, not as an error) and a legacy SSE endpoint that
fails to parse all reached the caller as the server wrote them, so a
server that echoed the key put it in errors, in tool output sent to the
model, and in anything that prints them.
A response to a request that carried the injected key now has the key
replaced with [REDACTED] in its error text, its method and every string
of its result before anything reads it, on streamable HTTP and on the
legacy SSE transport. The SSE client scrubs both the key its stream
request carried and the one on the POST, since the key is resolved per
request. A user Authorization header, OAuth and project-configured
servers are unchanged, since nothing was injected.
The scrub uses a new redaction.RedactSecretValues: the split-aware
known-value pass RedactString applies to ExtraSecretValues, without the
shape patterns, which could otherwise rewrite tool output or base64
payloads that never held the key. A result without the key keeps its
original bytes.
The MCP client now tracks automatically injected AI/ML API keys and scrubs them from HTTP and SSE responses and errors. A new redaction function replaces supplied secret values. The documentation describes the response handling.
RedactSecretValues replaces supplied secret values, including values split by invisible separators. Tests cover matching, non-matching, and empty values.
MCP response scrubbing internal/mcp/aimlapi.go
The MCP code identifies automatically injected keys and scrubs them from RPC errors, method names, nested JSON strings, and object member names. Unchanged and invalid JSON remains unchanged.
HTTP and SSE key tracking internal/mcp/network_client.go, internal/mcp/aimlapi_scrub_test.go, docs/EXTENDING.md
The HTTP and SSE clients track injected keys and scrub responses before further processing. Tests cover echoed keys, split-key variants, SSE stream and POST keys, and configured Authorization headers. The documentation describes redaction and HTTP error body handling.

The new redaction covers the main response paths, but a rare decode error can still echo a digit-only injected key. Fix this narrow gap before or shortly after merge.

🟠 P1 — Scrub every injected key on agent-visible MCP error paths, including prior redirect hops and transport failures
📍 Where:injectedAIMLAPIKey / scrubAIMLAPIKeys call sites in internal/mcp/network_client.go (post, streamable HTTP success path), and remoteSSEClient.post HTTP Do error return.
💥 What fails: When the injected service key changes across same-origin redirect hops, JSON-RPC error text that echoes the first-hop key is scrubbed with only the final-hop key, so the prior-hop key still reaches the user:
MCP initialize failed: stale aiml-first0123456789abcdef012345
On legacy SSE, after the server returns a valid endpoint event whose path embeds an echoed key, a failed POST Do wraps net/http diagnostics that include the full request URL; those strings are not run through scrubAIMLAPIKeyError, unlike endpoint parse errors in setEndpoint.
🔎 Root cause: Scrub key selection uses only injectedAIMLAPIKey(server, response.Request) on the final redirect hop, while reapplyAIMLAPIRedirectHeaders may attach a freshly resolved key on each hop. Transport-layer errors on paths that already stored the server-supplied endpoint URL are outside the JSON-RPC scrub pipeline.
📜 Stated contract:
Invariant: the key … never in … errors or tool output.
🏷️ Attribution: incomplete claimed fix — this PR adds the scrub contract and covers the main JSON-RPC paths, but redirect key rotation and SSE transport errors are still missing from the scrub inputs.
📌 In this PR:
streamable HTTP networkClient.post → scrubAIMLAPIKeys(..., injectedAIMLAPIKey(final hop only))
redirect hop key re-resolution (reapplyAIMLAPIRedirectHeaders + per-call loadAIMLAPIServiceKey)
legacy SSE remoteSSEClient.postDo / request-construction error returns without scrubAIMLAPIKeyError
successful setEndpoint storing echoed key material in endpointURL used for later POSTs
🔒 Unchanged on main: Redirect guard and loadAIMLAPIServiceKey per-hop behavior; httpStatusError body omission when the final hop carried an injected key.
🔧 Required correction: Feed scrubAIMLAPIKeys / scrubAIMLAPIKeyError the union of every injected key material this client actually sent on the request chain (all redirect hops for streamable HTTP, plus streamKey and per-POST sentKey on SSE). Apply scrubAIMLAPIKeyError to legacy SSE POST (and analogous transport failures) before returning. Add regression tests mirroring TestAIMLAPIMCPRedirectHopsReapplyAutomaticHeaderseligible hop with server echo of the first-hop key, and an SSE case where a parsed endpoint path contains the key and POST fails.
🛠️ Author fix: Close the root cause on every In this PR row in one pass: multi-hop scrub inputs, transport-error scrub, and tests for both. Do not patch only injectedAIMLAPIKey or only setEndpoint.
🚫 Out of scope: Changing redirect policy, redacting user-configured Authorization echo, or rewriting RedactString shape handling.
