fix: clear resumed chat state and escape tool file paths - #2466
Address the five supplied AI findings. Reviewed AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md; no separate issue number was supplied.
Clear controller history and all registered chat views when resuming from either sidebar or panel.
Escape attribute delimiters in all four tool-file-path link sites, including streamed input updates. The helper lives inside the generated webview script; the existing outer escapeHtml is not available there.
Correct the first-meaningful-prompt description, file-history typo, and stale metadata tail-window size.
Impact
Resuming no longer leaves previous messages in the controller or other views. Quoted file paths remain literal links rather than creating HTML attributes. Text rendering, selected-session loading, latest-selection guards, dependencies and provider behavior are unchanged.
The suggestion to immediately reset streaming is deliberately not applied: it would enable sending to the previous session while selected history is loading. The existing broadcast connected event already resets every view when startup completes; the existing pending-load regression remains intact.
Testing
Followed CONTRIBUTING Validation.

bun install --frozen-lockfile; bun run check:static; bun run typecheck:fast (3,314 files); bun run typecheck:type-tests (11 files); both node bin/openclaude --version and its NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 variant: passed.
npm --prefix vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode run lint and bun run --cwd vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode test: 55 passed. New stale-history and attribute regressions failed on the original implementation; both pass after correction.
Real Chromium loaded the production webview: initial/updated links preserve Unix/Windows quote, entity and markup paths; no extra attributes/elements; native clicks return the exact original path. Verified pending-load disable and connected readiness.
Canonical upstream fetch followed by committed bun run security:pr-scan -- --base FETCH_HEAD --head HEAD and git diff --check: passed.
Every hunk reviewed, plus independent focused security/concurrency review with no actionable finding. Full unit/site suites were not selected locally: narrow extension behavior and root comments only. CI covers the full matrix. Existing non-failing lint/Knip warnings remain.
CI: all 26 applicable checks passed; two expected untouched-surface skips. CodeRabbit check passed, but its formal review requests changes. Both Minor suggestions were evaluated in an evidence-backed reply: full cross-view history restoration expands the preserved baseline contract; the claimed startup-failure lock is contradicted by actual provider and Chromium error-path probes. No source changes were needed. CodeRabbit refused the reconsideration request because chat is restricted to organization members. An organization member must request reconsideration, or a maintainer must accept a documented exception; draft retained.
Notes
VS Code host/process boundaries use existing doubles; no live provider or native VS Code integration is claimed. General idle-view sending during loading and selected-view-only history restoration retain baseline behavior. No dashboard findings were dismissed.
The changes revise two session-storage comments, update both VS Code resume handlers to clear controller history and broadcast session_cleared, and escape file paths in tool-link attributes. Tests cover the resume notification and file-path escaping.
The prompt-extraction comment describes scanning from the beginning and skipping specified content. The metadata re-append comment identifies the LITE_READ_BUF_SIZE tail window.
Resume notifications
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Clear and broadcast on resume vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatProvider.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/resume.test.js
Both resume handlers clear controller messages and broadcast session_cleared to registered webviews. The test checks that history is empty and another registered view receives the notification.
File-path attribute escaping
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Escape file paths in tool links vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatRenderer.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatRenderer.test.js
Tool-link data-filepath values use escapeAttribute. The test checks escaping during initial rendering and tool updates.
Resuming a chat can leave another open view empty, and a failed resume can leave input locked. Resolve these behaviors before merging unless the limitations are explicitly accepted.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix: clear resumed chat state and escape tool file paths" matches the two main changes in the diff: clearing controller history and registered views on resume (chatProvider.js, resume.test.js), and escaping data-filepath attributes for tool file links (chatRenderer.js and its test). It uses the conventional fix: prefix and is concise. It does not mention the comment-only corrections in sessionStorage.ts, which is a minor aspect and does not make the title misleading.
Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed
Explanation
PASS. The authoritative PR diff changes session comments, chat resume state, webview rendering, tests, and a documentation image. It does not touch auth, provider routing, permissions, outbound network behavior, background execution, startup/config-home behavior, skills/plugins/MCP, CI permissions, or release scripts. The risk-surface disclosure requirement is therefore not triggered.
Full details: No Hidden Policy Change
Explanation
PASS. The authoritative diff contains only documented session-state clearing, webview broadcast, file-path attribute escaping, regression tests, and comment corrections. No changes alter routing defaults, telemetry or network behavior, permissions, authentication, trust boundaries, or policy configuration. The product behavior change is explicit in the PR description and tests, not hidden in unrelated cleanup.

Explanation
The pull request description includes all required sections. It explains the changes and impact, lists validation commands and results, identifies unrun checks and limitations, records CI and CodeRabbit status, and includes testing notes and a screenshot. It also documents the outstanding CodeRabbit reconsideration or maintainer-exception requirement.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 5 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Around line 548-549: Update both `_loadAndDisplaySession` implementations to
broadcast the restored messages through the chat controller to every registered
webview, rather than sending them only to the initiating webview; preserve the
existing message payload.
- Around line 548-549: Update both resume handlers to clear streaming state on
cancellation or startup failure only after blocking sends to the stale session;
keep input disabled while a replacement session is pending. Preserve the initial
`session_cleared` broadcast without `resetStreaming` so it does not re-enable
input during loading.

Review tests for meaningful coverage of the changed behavior, isolation of global/env/config state, async cleanup, fake timers, provider profile leaks, and Windows-compatible assumptions.
Source excerpt: No hidden policy change: Verify that product, trust-model, routing-default, telemetry/network, and permission-policy changes are not hidden inside unrelated cleanup.
Both resume handlers are covered by the regression test.
The test iterates over OpenClaudeChatViewProvider and OpenClaudeChatPanelManager, attaches each handler, and sends resume_session before running the assertions. A separate panel-manager case is not required.
@coderabbitai Please reconsider the change request on 5c87df8 using the verified baseline and failure-path evidence in #2466 (comment). All CI is now green. The two suggestions are respectively an explicitly excluded cross-view synchronization expansion and a startup-failure claim contradicted by production-handler and real-browser probes. Please update the review state if this resolves the concerns.
