feat(integrations): add Runcrate as an OpenAI-compatible gateway - #2434
Added Runcrate as a provider option, with API-key setup, an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, a default model, and a curated model catalog.
Runcrate credentials are supported with provider selection and saved profiles, including when switching between keyed and keyless profiles.
When a saved profile’s endpoint is retargeted, its saved Runcrate credentials and profile-managed custom authentication are withheld. Explicit shell credentials may still be used.
Existing environment setups can use RUNCRATE_API_KEY instead of OPENAI_API_KEY. Custom headers remain supported.
Documentation
Added Runcrate setup, model catalog, and compatibility details to the provider guide.
Maintainer compatibility repair
Preserves OrcaRouter's existing SHA-256 credential-origin format while keeping Runcrate's new fingerprint separate. An upgraded child can recognize a saved credential inherited from an older parent, so a keyless profile selection removes that credential. Independent shell replacements remain usable.
The regression uses the existing real-child fixture: an independently calculated pre-PR marker passes through the production pane environment forwarding, child startup, keyless profile selection, and request-header construction. Both openai and orcarouter profile names are covered. Before the repair, the two saved-key cases failed at the Authorization assertion and both shell-replacement controls passed; after the repair, all four cases pass.
820 tests passed across the affected grouping, including all 49 OrcaRouter process cases and Runcrate gateway tests:
bun run test src/utils/providerProfiles.orcarouter.process.test.ts src/utils/providerProfiles.test.ts src/utils/providerProfile.test.ts src/utils/providerFlag.test.ts src/utils/envFile.test.ts src/utils/managedEnv.test.ts src/utils/swarm/spawnUtils.test.ts src/services/api/agentRouting.test.ts src/integrations/gateways/runcrate.test.ts
Passed bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run check:static, bun run typecheck:fast, bun run typecheck:type-tests, bun run typecheck, bun run integrations:check, bun run verify:privacy, and git diff --check.
Passed node bin/openclaude --version and NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 node bin/openclaude --version with Node 26.13.0.
Post-commit intent scan passed: bun run security:pr-scan -- --base 4533f036f534a55c3399d30315fb44c255f79c24 --head HEAD.
Website typecheck/build evidence from a8b1f9293a6668f4e155b738ee1c11403c23372e remains applicable: this repair changes no website, dependency, or build-toolchain inputs.
Provider path exercised: OrcaRouter credential ownership and request-header construction. HTTP responses are stubbed in the existing fixture; authenticated live Runcrate inference was not exercised.
CI and automated review for the repair commit must finish before claiming merge readiness. No dependency, storage, routing-policy, or framework redesign is included.
CodeQL fixture follow-up
Commit 2919da2e340510d5fa9eaf0b0256c4ae85ecb00a freezes the pre-upgrade OrcaRouter origin marker for the dummy selected-key fixture instead of calculating it from an apiKey field at test runtime. This removes the computation flagged by CodeQL alert #483 while preserving exactly the same legacy input and every regression assertion. No production code, scanner rule, or security check is changed or suppressed.
Independently verified the frozen marker equals the original SHA-256 value used by the failing-before/passing-after upgrade regression.
Passed 486 tests: bun run test src/utils/providerProfiles.orcarouter.process.test.ts src/utils/providerProfiles.test.ts src/utils/providerProfile.test.ts src/integrations/gateways/runcrate.test.ts (includes all 49 OrcaRouter process cases).
Passed bun run check:static, bun run typecheck:fast, bun run typecheck:type-tests, git diff --check, node bin/openclaude --version, and NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 node bin/openclaude --version.
Post-commit bun run security:pr-scan -- --base 4533f036f534a55c3399d30315fb44c255f79c24 --head HEAD passed.
Prior root tsc, generated-artifact, privacy, website, and unchanged neighboring-test evidence remains applicable because production/dependency/site inputs are unchanged.
A fresh remote CodeQL scan must confirm closure; the alert has not been dismissed manually.
Risk/Impact
Network: explicitly selecting Runcrate adds authenticated inference traffic to https://api.runcrate.ai/v1. Its catalog is static; this addition does not perform dynamic model discovery.
Credential ownership: normal Runcrate requests use the dedicated RUNCRATE_API_KEY. Saved-profile application/persistence mirrors the selected key where compatibility helpers require it and records managed-key provenance. Keyless profile selection distinguishes profile-owned keys from genuine shell credentials.
Environment and children: the dedicated key is admitted by provider env files and managed-provider filtering. Tmux pane/window spawning explicitly forwards the Runcrate key and origin marker. Configured agent overrides clear competing provider state and install the selected route's credential.
Retarget and custom authentication: the added buildLaunchEnv guards withhold saved Runcrate key aliases and custom headers after endpoint retargeting. A marker-bearing OPENAI_AUTH_* group is treated as inherited profile auth and discarded on that retarget, even if saved values have changed. A marker-free shell auth group is treated as explicit input. This is the specific tested provenance policy; this compatibility repair does not change it.
OrcaRouter compatibility: the repair preserves the previously issued SHA-256 origin format. The frozen legacy input intentionally matches the restored current format and remains independent of the current helper, protecting old-parent/new-child selection from another format regression.
Disposition: the verified wrong-account reuse defect and the fixture CodeQL signal are addressed; current CI passes and CodeQL reports alert Fix/openclaude diagnostics settings #483 fixed. Automated review follow-up is being reconciled. No known new runtime blocker is asserted, and no blanket claim is made about unrelated pre-existing routing paths.
Maintainer review: this description discloses the existing addition's credential/trust surfaces; it does not claim a new maintainer approval or introduce an additional policy redesign. Final acceptance of the Runcrate gateway remains the maintainer's normal PR decision.
- Add gateway descriptor with static catalog of 5 curated models
- Register RUNCRATE_API_KEY in managed env var allow-list
- Update provider preset manifest and compatibility test coverage
- Add Runcrate to web provider directory and README supported providers table
FixesTwigpine#2419
The change adds Runcrate as an OpenAI-compatible gateway with a five-model catalog and RUNCRATE_API_KEY authentication. It integrates the key with provider routing, environment handling, profile credentials, launch reconstruction, and provider listings.
Adds the Runcrate endpoint, default model, five-model catalog, API-key authentication, and OpenAI-compatible transport settings. Tests cover gateway settings, shared model descriptors, and catalog checks. The README and web provider list document setup and configuration.
Adds RUNCRATE_API_KEY to managed and allowed environment keys, applies it for Runcrate overrides, recognizes matching OpenAI and Runcrate keys, and forwards the key and origin hash to teammate processes.
Adds Runcrate credential fingerprints and managed-key checks. Profile operations record provenance and apply credentials under the described route and profile conditions. OrcaRouter fingerprinting now uses the shared keyed HMAC-SHA-256 helper.
Launch handling selects persisted Runcrate credentials under route and endpoint conditions. Retargeted launches exclude saved credentials and custom-auth settings under the described conditions. Tests cover profile application, reconciliation, persistence, and relaunch behavior.
Twigpine/openclaude#2125: Adds OrcaRouter credential ownership and profile reconstruction. This change extends related credential lifecycle handling to Runcrate.
Twigpine/openclaude#2416: Changes shared OpenAI-compatible request error classification and retry behavior. Runcrate uses that transport.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#2419] coding requirements are met. src/integrations/gateways/runcrate.ts defines the runcrate aggregating gateway with https://api.runcrate.ai/v1, OpenAI Chat Completions transport, RUNCRATE_API_KEY bearer authentication, the required default model, and the five required static catalog entries. It sets usage support to false. Registration, managed environment handling, compatibility coverage, and gateway tests are included.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The provider-profile, environment-forwarding, routing, and regression-test changes support safe Runcrate credential handling and preserve OrcaRouter compatibility. The frozen test marker addresses the reported CodeQL fixture alert without changing production code or security rules. The directory, README, and test updates document or verify the integration. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is complete and relevant. It covers the change, rationale, affected areas, user and maintainer impact, testing commands and results, provider-path coverage, known limitations, CI status, and follow-up items. The author uses equivalent headings instead of the template headings and does not provide a separate Notes section, but the required information is present.
Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed
Explanation
The PR changes sensitive surfaces, including authenticated Runcrate outbound traffic, credential provenance, retargeted routing, startup and environment reconstruction, agent overrides, and tmux environment forwarding. The authored description discusses implementation and testing, but it does not provide a Risk/Impact section or explicitly state whether these changes introduce a blocker. It also does not fully disclose the required risk surfaces or the custom-auth provenance disposition.
Resolution
Add a Risk/Impact section to the PR description. Cover credential provenance, environment inheritance, retargeted routing, outbound Runcrate traffic, startup reconstruction, and tmux forwarding. State explicitly whether the PR introduces a blocker and give the final disposition. Document the custom-auth provenance disposition, even if the code fix is complete.
Full details: No Hidden Policy Change
Explanation
The gateway addition is documented, but the PR also introduces undocumented trust and credential-propagation policies. providerProfile.ts adds Runcrate credential provenance markers and retarget rules that withhold saved generic/dedicated keys, profile-managed OPENAI_AUTH_* values, and ANTHROPIC_CUSTOM_HEADERS, while allowing only explicit shell credentials. providerProfiles.ts rejects managed ambient keys for keyless profiles and marks custom auth as profile-managed. The PR also changes the env-file allow-list, provider-managed variables, agent overrides, and tmux teammate forwarding. New tests explicitly codify these policies. The README and web entry document setup, endpoint, models, and general custom-header support, but not the retarget, provenance, or forwarding decisions. The separate HMAC helper is only used for Runcrate; orcarouterCredentialFingerprint remains unkeyed SHA-256 in both reviewed refs.
Resolution
Obtain explicit maintainer approval for the Runcrate credential provenance, retarget behavior, custom-auth and custom-header handling, managed-environment allow-list, agent override, and tmux forwarding changes. Document these policies in the PR and split them from the gateway addition if they need separate review.

Do not send a saved Runcrate key to a retargeted endpoint.
A saved Runcrate profile also stores its key as OPENAI_API_KEY. If OPENAI_BASE_URL points to a different endpoint and no shell key is set, this fallback supplies the saved Runcrate key to that endpoint. The OpenAI shim uses the generic key for custom routes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Runcrate already forces chat completions during request normalization.
providerConfig.ts unconditionally selects chat_completions when the resolved route requires that format. A stale OPENAI_API_FORMAT=responses therefore does not make Runcrate use the Responses protocol. No cleanup change or regression test is required for this concern.
- Track RUNCRATE provenance with a deterministic credential fingerprint in\n PROFILE_ENV_KEYS so stale origin markers are cleared.\n- Wire rememberManagedRuncrateCredential into apply, activation, and update so\n a keyed profile records ownership and a keyless selection cannot reuse it.\n- Treat a managed RUNCRATE_API_KEY as unaligned for a keyless Runcrate profile\n so the profile is reapplied instead of keeping a removed key.\n- Withhold a saved Runcrate key from a retargeted OPENAI_BASE_URL while still\n honoring an explicit shell credential.\n- Compute credential provenance fingerprints with a keyed HMAC (matching the\n model-discovery fingerprint) instead of a bare SHA-256, which CodeQL reports\n as an unsalted password hash.

Gate the persisted RUNCRATE_API_KEY recovery paths on the retarget guard so a
shell URL override can only use an explicit shell credential, and cover the
crafted persisted-route case with a regression test.
The earlier guard protects canonical Runcrate retargets, but a noncanonical AIMLAPI URL can still resolve to aimlapi. That enters the later branch and restores the saved OPENAI_API_KEY from persistedEnv. The existing test covers only a canonical Runcrate target.
Exclude retargetedRuncrateProfile from the noncanonical AIMLAPI branch. This also preserves an explicit shell credential, which a guard only around the restoration call would otherwise delete.

The legacy profile-file union does not include gateway vendor ids, so parse the
fixture like the on-disk format instead of annotating it as ProfileFile.
Also redact a profile-managed generic credential inherited from a pane, stop
restoring the persisted key through the noncanonical AIMLAPI branch, and align
the crafted profile fixture with the on-disk startup profile name.

Exclude retargeted Runcrate profiles from provider-specific credential backfills.
A saved Runcrate profile can be retargeted to canonical ApiSmart or LLMTR without a shell credential. The ApiSmart and LLMTR backfills then place the saved generic OpenAI credential into the provider-specific environment variable, and the returned launch environment carries that key to the retargeted provider.
Add !retargetedRuncrateProfile to both backfill conditions.

The environment-retention observation is correct: with separate dummy generic and Runcrate keys, --provider runcrate retains both and the pane env builder includes both. However, exact same-input probes at starting repair head a8b1f929 and current 2919da2 produce identical behavior, and the canonical Runcrate request sends only the dedicated Runcrate bearer. None of providerFlag.ts, spawnUtils.ts, or requestExecutor.ts changed in this repair. A broader policy that prunes unrelated process credentials is not the verified Orca compatibility outcome.
The proposed unconditional mirror also creates a concrete credential-routing regression:
This was reproduced through the real request client with stub HTTP, on both revisions. The provider-flag contract intentionally preserves explicit custom endpoints. The supplied patch ignores that endpoint boundary. Its singular-key rewrite also leaves the independent generic pool and other intentionally inherited provider credentials unspecified.
I am declining that patch and a new environment-minimization policy in this bounded compatibility repair. Such a separate outcome needs an explicit contract and endpoint-safe treatment; it should not be introduced merely to close a review comment. The original Orca defect is fixed, the frozen historical-input regression has passed its failing-before/passing-after proof, all CI/CodeQL checks pass, and the PR now contains the requested Risk/Impact disclosure. Please reconcile the review against that verified scope and current head. No additional source change is proposed here.

Reviewed head 2919da2e340510d5fa9eaf0b0256c4ae85ecb00a against merge base ec39d807c0acc747eb22121ca087313f3fd45fee and current target 4533f036f534a55c3399d30315fb44c255f79c24.
Merge readiness
GitHub reports MERGEABLE / CLEAN, current approval, and passing selected checks, including the stable required checks and CodeQL. The target contains 46 commits since the merge base, but there is no confirmed version/toolchain drift or conflict requiring a rebase under the repository's policy. No competing Runcrate PR was found; the related OrcaRouter gateway and retry changes are merged.
Validation
Locked root and website installs passed.
Focused gateway/profile run: 269 tests passed. Broader affected/neighboring grouping: 910 tests passed, zero failures, with a complete guarded-runner report. These scopes overlap.
Static checks, fast typecheck, focused type assertions, root TypeScript check, generated integration verification, intent scan, privacy verification, and diff whitespace check passed.
Website typecheck/build and both launcher checks passed using review-local Node 26.13.0. The initial website attempt with system Node 22.23.1 was blocked by Astro's runtime requirement and was rerun successfully on Node 26.
Eight additional real-process Runcrate ownership/startup probes passed across both saved-profile aliases. HTTP responses were substituted while request construction, configuration, pane forwarding and fresh executable startup ran normally. Authenticated live Runcrate inference was not exercised.
Changed contract coverage
Contract
Producer / persistence
Restore / effect / cleanup
Tests and operator surfaces
Route and model catalog
Descriptor and both generated registries define Runcrate, the static five-model catalog, endpoint and default model
Preset/profile resolver, lazy loader, provider picker and runtime route/model metadata consume the generated entries; no dynamic discovery added
Gateway, registry, compatibility and picker expectations; README and website agree on setup/defaults
Saved credential ownership
Profile application and startup-file builders mirror the selected key into the dedicated alias and record normalized origin
Existing endpoint-equivalence rules, route selection and validation-before-env-application reused
Endpoint/default assertions; README and website static text; provider picker and escaped website rendering
Dedicated key and generic aliases
Existing credential string/pool sanitizers; profile mirrors and env-file/managed-env admission
Dedicated-only request selection, existing pool failure handling, managed-key rejection and clear list
Saved/keyless/shell/pool/isolation paths inspected; both changed docs name RUNCRATE_API_KEY; existing secret masking and descriptor-derived redaction cover it
Five-model catalog and shared-link assertions; no new uniqueness, size or malformed-body parser contract introduced
The change provides preset setup and a curated catalog instead of requiring manual custom-provider setup. Its ongoing cost is maintaining that catalog and the credential lifecycle. Review covered all changed hunks and affected references, two waves of two independent blind searches, a fresh missing-contract search, candidate reconciliation, intent/attribution audit, and a final accuracy challenge.

Summary by CodeRabbit
RUNCRATE_API_KEYinstead ofOPENAI_API_KEY. Custom headers remain supported.Maintainer compatibility repair
Both
openaiandorcarouterprofile names are covered. Before the repair, the two saved-key cases failed at the Authorization assertion and both shell-replacement controls passed; after the repair, all four cases pass.Validated commit:

Risk/Impact
https://api.runcrate.ai/v1. Its catalog is static; this addition does not perform dynamic model discovery.RUNCRATE_API_KEY. Saved-profile application/persistence mirrors the selected key where compatibility helpers require it and records managed-key provenance. Keyless profile selection distinguishes profile-owned keys from genuine shell credentials.buildLaunchEnvguards withhold saved Runcrate key aliases and custom headers after endpoint retargeting. A marker-bearingOPENAI_AUTH_*group is treated as inherited profile auth and discarded on that retarget, even if saved values have changed. A marker-free shell auth group is treated as explicit input. This is the specific tested provenance policy; this compatibility repair does not change it.
