Summary

  • SDKSessionOptions gains env?: Record<string, string | undefined>, applied around each of that session's turns and restored afterwards.
  • QueryOptions has accepted env for a while; a persistent v2 session could not, so a host keeping several sessions alive in one process had to share one environment between them.

Why it matters: the variables that select a provider — ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, OPENAI_BASE_URL and the matching keys — are read per request. Two sessions aimed at different endpoints therefore used whichever had been set last, and the symptom is not an error but an answer from the wrong place, or usage billed against the wrong account.

The implementation reuses the process-wide env mutex query() already takes (SEC-1), so one session's variables cannot leak into another session's turn. It is applied after init(), where query() applies its own: init is memoized and configures the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once for the process, so it must not be configured out of whichever session happens to run first. The restore sits in the turn generator's finally, so a consumer that breaks out of the loop still restores — the generator's return runs it. If applying throws half way through (an env of getters), what was applied goes back and the lock is released before the error leaves. A session that sets no env takes no mutex and costs nothing.

Impact

  • user-facing impact: none by default. A session with no env behaves exactly as before, takes no lock, and touches no variable.
  • developer/maintainer impact: a host can now point individual sessions at different providers, gateways or proxies in one process. The mutex means turns belonging to sessions with different environments serialise rather than overlap; with one process environment there is no honest alternative, and the type says so rather than leaving it to be discovered. Sessions without env are unaffected and still overlap freely.

Testing

  • I ran the required local preflight, with one documented exception below.

  • exact commands and results:

    • bun install — ok
    • bun run build — ok
    • bun run smoke — ok (SDK type declarations in sync, 62 exports match; reports 0.31.0)
    • bun run lint:any-budget — ok (current=778, baseline=779)
    • bun run deadcode — ok (exit 0)
    • bun run typecheck — ok
    • bun run typecheck:type-tests — ok (10 files)
  • focused tests: bun test ./src/entrypoints/sdk — 11 pass, 0 fail, across 3 files. The two new files are 8 pass / 0 fail.

The new tests are red-first: with src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts reverted to main and both test files kept, they are 0 pass / 8 fail.

v2.sessionEnv.test.ts drives the apply/restore directly: the variable is set for the turn and restored after; a variable the environment did not have is removed again rather than left empty; undefined removes a variable for the turn; a session without env returns a null snapshot, takes no mutex, and restoring that null releases nothing (a stray release would let two env-setting turns overlap); and two sessions with different environments serialise — the second turn does not enter while the first holds the lock.

v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts iterates sendMessage() itself, with a stand-in engine that reports what it sees in process.env and init stubbed: the turn sees its own variables and nothing is left afterwards; an abandoned iterator (break on the first message) puts the environment back and frees the mutex, proven by a second turn getting straight in; two turns with different environments never interleave, checked on what each engine saw rather than on timing.

  • documented skipped checks, platform limitations, or verified pre-existing failures:

bun run check could not be run to completion, for the reason already documented on fix(sdk): follow switchSession with the session file pointer #2253 and reproduced again here: its test:full step stops making progress and spins a single core with no output. On this machine a run accumulated 2057s of CPU on one core and emitted nothing for 35 minutes before being stopped, on a clean tree. Every step of check that does finish was run individually and passes (above), and the src/entrypoints/sdk segment is green.

Notes

  • provider/model path tested: none — this is provider-independent plumbing. The tests drive the apply/restore directly and run no turn, so there is no network and no provider key involved.

  • screenshots attached (if UI changed): n/a, no UI change.

  • follow-up work or known limitations: this does not make turns with different environments concurrent, and cannot: one process has one environment. What it removes is the silent case, where two sessions shared a provider address neither of them asked for.

Nor does it isolate turns of sessions that set no env — they take no mutex, exactly as in query(), so one can run while another session's variables are in place. The type now says so. Closing that would mean every turn in the process taking the environment lock, i.e. all SDK turns serialising, for query() as much as for v2; that is a maintainer's call rather than part of adding env to a type.

Related: Transcript state on the Project singleton is not isolated per SDK context #2267 tracks a separate isolation gap in the same area — Project's transcript state is process-wide while session ids are context-scoped.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Sessions can set temporary environment variables for a turn. Values are restored when the turn finishes or is abandoned; setting a variable to undefined removes it for the turn.
    • Turns with nonempty environment overrides run sequentially so their settings do not overlap. Turns without overrides do not change the environment, but may run while another turn’s temporary settings are active. Empty overrides do not affect turn behavior.

📝 Walkthrough

SDK session options now accept per-turn environment overrides. Turns apply overrides under a shared environment mutex and restore prior values after iteration, including when iteration ends early.

Changes: Session environment overrides

Layer / File(s) Summary
Environment contract and snapshot handling
src/entrypoints/sdk.d.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnv.test.ts
SDKSessionOptions adds an optional env map. The implementation snapshots and applies overrides under the shared mutex, then restores prior values. Tests cover undefined removals, sessions without overrides, restoration, and mutex serialization.
Turn-scoped environment application
src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.ts, src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts
Turns apply overrides before agent loading and MCP setup, and keep them active through message submission. Tests cover completed turns, abandoned iteration, subsequent turns, and concurrent turns.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: jatmn, chioarub

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb6e3

The implementation appears mergeable, but a focused provider-boundary test would give confidence that session-specific endpoints and credentials work through a real turn.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to cb6e3

Environment overrides are isolated between participating turns, but concurrent sessions without overrides can still use another session's provider configuration. Closing a paused turn also does not guarantee restoration or release of the shared lock. These risks are limited to hosts using overrides in a shared process; ordinary completion and explicit iterator cleanup restore the previous values.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New session overrides mutate process.env while sessions without nonempty overrides bypass the mutex. A concurrent env-less session can therefore construct requests using another session's endpoint and credential configuration, potentially sending its conversation to the wrong provider or billing identity. This writer-only isolation pattern already existed in query(); the PR extends it to persistent v2 session turns. The public warning and serialization of participating turns constrain, but do not eliminate, this exposure.
  • Medium · security · inferred: After sendMessage yields, calling session.close() without returning or draining that iterator does not execute its environment-restoration finally. close() aborts the engine and clears references, while the context wrapper only advances or returns the generator when explicitly invoked. The suspended turn can consequently retain temporary provider configuration and the process-wide mutex indefinitely: env-less work can continue using those values, while subsequent env-carrying sessions and queries wait. Before this PR, a suspended v2 turn held neither this environment snapshot nor this lock. Explicit for-await break correctly restores both, but is not equivalent to close-only cleanup.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated blast radius is cohosted sessions and SDK queries sharing process.env and the mutex. Exposure depends on enabling nonempty overrides and overlapping work or leaving an iterator suspended. Whether an untrusted tenant can supply these options is not established; cross-process or deployment-wide exposure is not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If one session installs a provider endpoint and another env-less session constructs its client concurrently, the second session can select that endpoint and ambient credential configuration. If the first iterator remains suspended after close(), the same configuration can remain visible beyond the intended active turn. These are source-supported paths, not demonstrated live-provider exploits.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The mutex protects participating override scopes, not all environment readers. Existing provider controls distinguish first-party authentication and strip authentication headers for explicit per-agent provider overrides; those controls do not provide session-local storage for environment-selected endpoints and credentials.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Explicit iterator return propagates through the SDK context wrapper, and the break test verifies restoration and lock reuse. Session close instead requests interruption without returning that iterator, leaving cleanup ownership split between session lifecycle and consumer iteration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Prefer request-local provider configuration over temporary process-global mutation. If the global mechanism remains, coordinate environment readers as well as writers so a default session cannot inherit another session's temporary provider identity.
  • proposed — Give shutdown explicit ownership of active iterators and an awaitable completion boundary that terminates suspended iteration and waits for restoration and lock release. Avoid restoring independently while turn work could still consume the temporary environment.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the required Summary, Impact, Testing, and Notes sections. It explains the implementation, user and maintainer impact, focused tests, validation results, and the incomplete full check with documented context.

Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes provider routing and outbound request behavior by applying per-session environment variables, including provider endpoints and credentials. The PR description explicitly discloses the risk: sessions could silently use the wrong endpoint or account, and env-less turns can observe another turn’s process environment. It also documents the process-wide mutex, serialization, deadlock cases, default behavior, and the lack of provider/network-path coverage. The stated impact is no default user-facing change, so no blocker is identified.

Full details: No Hidden Policy Change

Explanation

No hidden policy change found. The PR changes only the v2 SDK option/type, v2 turn scoping, and focused tests. The routing change is explicit: SDKSessionOptions.env applies provider-selection variables per turn, serializes env-scoped turns, and documents env-less visibility. Existing permission options and callbacks remain unchanged. No telemetry, network instrumentation, trust-model, or permission-policy code changes appear in the reviewed diff.

Protect env-less turns from concurrent overrides.

When one configured turn holds the environment mutex, an env-less turn skips the mutex and can execute while the other turn’s variables remain in process.env. Ensure the env-less provider request uses the same isolation scheme before it reads provider endpoints or credentials.

Test the turn lifecycle, not only the private hooks.

These tests never iterate sendMessage(). They cannot detect a failure to apply the environment before a turn or restore it after an early exit. Add a focused turn-level test that observes the environment during iteration and after the consumer breaks. Include a concurrent env-less turn to check isolation.

As per path instructions, “Block when risky runtime changes lack focused regression coverage or tests assert implementation details while missing the user-visible behavior.”

Done in bddb9b5 — and it found a second thing, so thank you.

src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts iterates sendMessage(). The engine is a stand-in that pushes process.env[KEY] into a list for every message it yields, so the assertion is on what the turn actually saw rather than on the hooks; init is stubbed, because the real one configures proxies, mTLS and remote managed settings process-wide and reaches the network.

Three tests: the turn sees its own variables and nothing is left afterwards; an abandoned iterator (break on the first message) puts the environment back and frees the mutex, proven by a second turn getting straight in; two turns with different environments never interleave, checked on what each engine saw rather than on timing.

Writing the first of those showed the apply was in the wrong place. It ran before init(), while query() deliberately applies after it (SEC-1) — init is memoized and sets up the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once per process, so the first session to run was configuring all of it out of its own variables. The apply moved inside the generator, right after init, with the restore in a finally around the rest of the turn.

On the env-less concurrent turn you asked for: it would be a test of something this PR does not provide, so it is not there — see the top-level comment.

Red-first: with v2.ts reverted to main and both test files kept, the two files are 0 pass / 8 fail.

Review follow-up: three findings fixed in bddb9b5, one declined with a reason. Full local preflight re-run, all green except the documented check stall.

Fixed — the mutex could be held by a turn that never started. Object.entries(overrides) invokes getters, so an env built out of accessors could throw after acquireEnvMutex() and before sendMessage entered its try. Application is wrapped now: what was already applied goes back and the lock is released before the error leaves.

Fixed — the snapshot has a null prototype. __proto__ is a variable name like any other, and on a plain object snapshot['__proto__'] = value is swallowed by the prototype setter instead of being stored, so the one key that must be restored would be the one key missing from Object.keys(snapshot). Object.create(null) is both the safe and the correct answer. (The ast-grep hit was about pollution; the real defect was a lost variable.)

Fixed, and not what was reported — the apply was on the wrong side of init(). Writing the turn-level test made it visible. query() applies its overrides after init() deliberately (SEC-1): init is memoized and configures the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once for the process, so applying before it meant whichever session ran first set all of that up out of its own variables. The apply moved inside the generator, right after init, with the restore in a finally around the rest of the turn — the shape query() already has. The earlier justification for wrapping yield* inner instead ("so an abandoned iterator restores") was simply wrong: breaking out of the loop calls the generator's return, which runs the generator's own finally, and there is now a test that breaks on the first message and checks both the variable and the lock.

Declined — isolating env-less turns. The finding is accurate: a turn belonging to a session with no env takes no mutex, so it can run while another session's variables are in place. It is also exactly how query() has always behaved — if (hasEnvOverrides) guards the same lock there — so this is a property of SEC-1's design, not something this PR introduces for v2 alone. Closing it means every turn in the process takes the environment lock whether or not it cares, i.e. all SDK turns serialise, for both query() and v2. That is a behaviour change across the whole SDK and a maintainer's call, not a detail of adding env to a type.

What this PR does instead is say so in the type rather than leave it to be discovered:

   * What it does NOT do, exactly as in `query()`: a turn belonging to a
   * session without `env` takes no mutex, so it can run while another
   * session's variables are in place. In one process there is one
   * environment; isolating readers as well as writers would mean serialising
   * every turn in the process. So set `env` on every session that cares which
   * provider it reaches, not only on the odd one out.

Happy to open a separate issue for the reader-side gap if you want it tracked — it belongs to query() as much as to v2, which is why it is not being fixed here.

Tests. v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts iterates sendMessage() with a stand-in engine that reports what it sees in process.env, so the assertions are on the turn rather than on the private hooks. With v2.ts reverted to main and both test files kept: 0 pass / 8 fail. With the change: 8 pass. bun run build, smoke, lint:any-budget, deadcode, typecheck, typecheck:type-tests all pass; bun run check still stalls in test:full as documented on #2253 and in the PR body.

git diff -w is the readable form of the v2.ts diff — most of it is the re-indent of the turn body under the new try.

Thanks @kevincodex1 — all three of CodeRabbit's findings are addressed, and the last one is in since its comment:

  • Mutex held by a turn that never started (Object.entries on a throwing getter) — fixed in bddb9b5: application is wrapped, what was applied goes back and the lock is released before the error leaves.
  • Turn-level coverage — bddb9b5 adds v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts, which iterates sendMessage() with a stand-in engine reporting what it sees in process.env: variables in place when the engine asks, an abandoned iterator restoring and freeing the lock, two different environments never interleaving. Red-first against main: 0 pass / 8 fail across both files.
  • Document the lock constraint — 55c53cb, on the option itself: a paused iterator holds the mutex, and a canUseTool callback must not await another env-carrying turn.

One finding I declined with a reason, in the thread and in the type: isolating turns of sessions that set no env. That is how query() has always behaved (if (hasEnvOverrides) guards the same lock), so it is a property of SEC-1 rather than something this PR introduces; closing it would mean every turn in the process taking the environment lock — all SDK turns serialising, for query() too. Happy to open a separate issue if you want it tracked.

Local preflight is green except bun run check, whose test:full step stops making progress and spins one core with no output — documented on #2253 and reproduced here (2057s CPU, 35 min silent, clean tree). Every other step was run individually and passes.

Restore the ../init.js module registration after these tests.

Bun module registrations are process-global, and mock.restore() does not remove a mock.module() registration. Re-register the real module in afterAll; calling only mock.restore() is not sufficient.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Verify Object.entries cannot diverge from the snapshot keys.

The snapshot loop uses Object.keys(overrides), and the apply loop uses Object.entries(overrides). A plain host object gives both loops the same key set. A Proxy can return different keys from separate enumerations, and the restore step then misses the extra key. Hosts that pass a Proxy for env are unusual, so this is non-blocking. If you want to remove the gap, enumerate once:

♻️ Single enumeration
-      for (const key of Object.keys(overrides)) {
- snapshot[key] = process.env[key]
-      }
-      for (const [key, value] of Object.entries(overrides)) {

`QueryOptions` accepts `env`; `SDKSessionOptions` did not, so a host that
keeps several sessions alive in one process had to share one environment
between them.

That matters when the variable selects the provider. `ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL`,
`OPENAI_BASE_URL` and the matching keys are read per request, so two sessions
aimed at different endpoints silently used whichever had been set last — and
the symptom is not an error but an answer from the wrong place, or billing
against the wrong account.

Applied around each turn and restored afterwards, reusing the process-wide env
mutex `query()` already takes (SEC-1), so one session's variables cannot leak
into another session's turn. The wrapping sits around the whole iteration
rather than inside the generator, so a consumer that breaks out of the loop
still restores: the generator's return runs the finally with it. A session
that sets no `env` takes no mutex and costs nothing.

The mutex means turns belonging to sessions with different environments
serialise rather than overlap. With one process environment there is no honest
alternative, and serialising is the behaviour that is correct rather than
merely concurrent; the type documents it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…on failure

Review follow-up on the placement and on two ways the lock could be kept.

APPLIED AFTER init(), INSIDE THE GENERATOR. `query()` takes the mutex and
applies its overrides after `init()` for a reason: `init` is memoized, and it
configures the global agents, the proxies and mTLS once for the process. Doing
it before meant whichever session happened to run first configured all of that
out of its own variables. The apply now sits where query's does — right after
init, with the restore in a `finally` around the rest of the turn.

An early exit still restores. That was the stated reason for wrapping `yield*
inner` instead, and it was not a reason: a consumer that breaks out of the loop
calls the generator's `return`, which runs the generator's own `finally` — the
way the same pattern already works in `query()`.

THE MUTEX IS RELEASED IF APPLYING THROWS. `Object.entries(overrides)` invokes
getters, so an `env` whose properties are accessors could throw after the lock
was taken and before `sendMessage` entered its `try`. The lock stayed held and
every later env-setting turn in the process waited on it forever. Application
is now wrapped: what was already applied goes back and the lock is released
before the error leaves.

THE SNAPSHOT HAS A NULL PROTOTYPE. `__proto__` is a variable name like any
other, and on a plain object `snapshot['__proto__'] = value` is swallowed by
the prototype setter instead of being remembered — so the one key that must be
restored would be the one key missing from `Object.keys(snapshot)`.

The tests now drive `sendMessage()` itself, not only the private apply and
restore: the engine is a stand-in that reports what it sees in `process.env`,
and `init` is stubbed because the real one reaches the network. They prove the
variables are in place when the engine asks, that an abandoned iterator puts
them back and frees the lock, and that two turns with different environments
never interleave — three tests, all five of the earlier ones kept, red against
main (0 of 8).

Documented in the type what this does NOT do, since it would otherwise be
found out instead: a turn of a session without `env` takes no mutex, exactly as
in `query()`, so it can run while another session's variables are in place.
Isolating readers too would mean serialising every turn in the process.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ld all turn

Review follow-up. Holding the environment mutex for the whole turn is what
makes the isolation real, and it has two consequences a host author would
otherwise meet as a hang:

A PAUSED ITERATOR STILL HOLDS IT. Stopping half way through `for await (… of
session.sendMessage(…))` to await another env-carrying turn waits forever: the
first turn cannot finish while the second waits for the lock it holds.
Finishing the turn, or leaving the loop with `break`/`return` — which calls the
generator's `return` and frees the lock — is the way out.

A `canUseTool` CALLBACK IS INSIDE THE TURN. Awaiting an env-carrying `query()`
from it is the same deadlock one level down.

Both are documented on the option rather than discovered. Neither applies to a
session without `env`, which takes no lock at all.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rn sees

Three findings from review.

Object.keys fed the snapshot loop and Object.entries the apply loop. A plain
host object gives both the same keys; a Proxy need not. A key seen only by the
apply loop would be set and never restored. Enumerated once now, and before
the mutex is taken, so a throwing getter cannot leave it held either.

mock.module registrations are process-global and mock.restore does not remove
them, so the stubbed init() went on standing in for the real one in every test
file that ran afterwards in the same bun process. The real module is captured
first and re-registered in afterAll.

The review also asked for a concurrent env-less turn, expecting isolation.
There is none, and the test now says so: a turn that sets no environment takes
no mutex, so it runs alongside one that does and reads the same process.env
while the variables are in place. Serialising every turn instead would stall
an embedder's whole process the moment one session used env. What does hold —
that nothing survives the turn — is asserted, and the limit is documented on
SDKSessionOptions.env.

Rebased on main (8c46032) and addressed the three open review findings in cb6e3089.

1. Object.keys vs Object.entries (v2.ts:345). Taken. Both loops now read one Object.entries(overrides), and it is read before acquireEnvMutex() — a throwing getter on a host's env can no longer leave the mutex held either, which strengthens the earlier fix in 06e3b4a8 rather than overlapping it.

2. mock.module('../init.js') not restored (sessionEnvTurn.test.ts:51). Taken. The real module is imported and held in beforeAll before the stub is registered, and re-registered in afterAll.

3. Concurrent env-less turn (sessionEnv.test.ts:40). Written, and it found the opposite of what the suggestion expected — so the test now asserts the real behaviour instead:

A turn that sets no environment takes no mutex (nothing to take, nothing to put back), so it runs alongside an env-scoped turn; process.env is one object per process, so it reads that turn's variables while they are in place. The suggested assertion (seen split between the two sessions) fails for that reason.

The alternative — making every turn take the mutex — would serialise an embedder's entire process the moment one session used env, which is a worse trade for the host this feature exists for. So the limitation is now stated in three places: the test name (AN ENV-LESS TURN RUNNING ALONGSIDE ONE CAN SEE ITS VARIABLES, BUT NOT OUTLIVE THEM), its docblock, and the SDKSessionOptions.env doc comment. What is guaranteed — that nothing survives the turn — is asserted.

The rest of that finding (apply/restore across a real sendMessage, including an abandoned iterator) was already covered by v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts, added in bddb9b53.

Local validation (CONTRIBUTING § Validation, run on this head): bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run check, bun run typecheck, bun run typecheck:type-tests, node bin/openclaude --version, the same with NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1, bun run test:provider-recommendation (167 pass), and bun run security:pr-scan -- --base FETCH_HEAD --head HEAD ("no suspicious additions found") — all clean.

One pre-existing failure in bun run test:provider, not from this PR: src/services/api/claude.streamWatchdog.test.ts › "falls back when the top-level stream iterator never settles" fails with ENOENT … interruption-trace.jsonl. Verified against the PR base: the same test fails on a clean origin/main (8c46032) worktree with the same error, and CI is green on both, so it looks Windows-local.

Correction to my previous comment: I misread the exit status of the backgrounded bun run check and reported it as clean. It was not. The accurate picture:

  • lint:any-budget, smoke and deadcode passed — they precede test:full in the && chain, so reaching test:full means they were clean.
  • test:full did not complete. Shard 4/8 hit the 600 s timeout (exit 124) after one failing test, src/components/agents/AgentRouteSelector.test.tsx › "typing a custom model id persists the full id on submit". 3/8 shards finished clean; the rest did not run.

Not from this PR: running that file alone on a clean origin/main (8c46032) worktree reproduces the same failure (4 pass, 1 fail), and the shard timeout follows it. I saw the identical shard-4 timeout and identical single failure on the #2253 branch too, so it is independent of either change — it looks Windows-local, and CI here is green.

Everything else in that comment stands and was run on this head: typecheck, typecheck:type-tests, node bin/openclaude --version (also with NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1), test:provider-recommendation (167 pass), security:pr-scan (no suspicious additions), and the two env test files (9 pass). test:provider has the one pre-existing claude.streamWatchdog failure described above, also reproduced on base.

Sorry for the noise — flagging it rather than leaving an inaccurate validation claim on the PR.

321-353: Non-blocking: the null-prototype snapshot and single enumeration address the earlier findings.

Object.entries(overrides) runs before acquireEnvMutex(), so a throwing getter cannot leave the mutex held. The null-prototype snapshot keeps __proto__ restorable. This matches the retrieved learning about Object.create(null).

If acquireEnvMutex() is the only await between the check and the apply, the ordering is correct. A cancelled turn cannot leak the lock, because restoreSessionEnv runs in the finally block.

One edge case remains. process.env[key] = value coerces non-string values to strings. This is acceptable because the type is string | undefined.

396-502: Verify the lock is released if the generator is closed before the first next() completes applySessionEnv.

applySessionEnv() is awaited at Line 396, before the try at Line 397. If it rejects, the error path already restores and releases inside applySessionEnv. If it resolves, the try/finally owns the restore. This is correct.

A generator that is never iterated never reaches this code, so it takes no lock. This is also correct.

No blocking issue. The documented deadlock constraints in sdk.d.ts and v2.ts match the behavior.

The concern is refuted. No other test mocks src/entrypoints/init.ts; the only other init-related mock targets src/commands/initMode.js. The import-before-mock ordering therefore captures the real module for the current test suite.

Add a provider-boundary assertion.

src/entrypoints/sdk/v2.sessionEnvTurn.test.ts:70-88 replaces the session engine with engineSeeingEnv, which only reads process.env and yields synthetic messages. The tests do not create a provider client or assert its endpoint or credentials.

A regression where sendMessage() applies the environment but the provider route or client ignores it would therefore pass. Add one focused turn test that reaches the provider request and asserts the overridden endpoint or authentication header. Existing provider tests exercise lower-level query paths, not this SDK session boundary.

Add a focused SDK session turn test alongside the `SDKSessionOptions.env through
a turn` tests that reaches the provider request instead of relying only on
`engineSeeingEnv`; assert that the request uses the session’s overridden
endpoint or authentication header. Keep the existing environment-isolation
assertions intact.
