Summary

The existing whitespace matcher misses quoted/equals NODE_OPTIONS flags and can mistake option-like text inside another option's value for an active CA flag. This PR models Node's quoting, modeled value ownership, stopping boundary and ordered boolean negation before deriving CA state.

The isolation option's supported alias, --experimental-test-isolation, now resolves through the existing --test-isolation value role. Previously its separate operand became a stopping boundary and hid a later CA flag; missing/empty/negated alias forms could also bypass canonical validation. One alias-map entry fixes those paths together, without exceptions in CA consumers.

The original contribution by @Ayush7614 is preserved. The branch is rebased onto main at cdb28e0e3e464917880282885bb977c4d79ba0cf; range-diff confirmed all eleven preceding patches were preserved.

I reviewed AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md.

Impact

  • Users: supported quoted/equals flags, option values and later negations produce consistent explicit CA-source selection after environment changes and cache clearing. Both CA flags honor the isolation alias.
  • Maintainers: the repair adds one entry to the existing alias resolver and extends the existing helper/CA matrix. No production subprocess, public parser API, dependency, trust-policy, settings-precedence or networking-consumer change.

Testing

  • Completed the required local preflight on the final tree; no baseline-failure exception was needed.
  • Reviewed/pushed head: 19698169a299cc80918c15df7973afeee27fce83; validated tree: 79afe0405bb799db1b7ac1bc4bcdc87312802802.
  • bun run check: 11,100 passed, 0 failed, 3 skipped, exit 0. Includes static/smoke/deadcode checks, all eight JUnit-verified unit shards (11,095 passed), conversation-arc (1 passed), and context-efficiency (4 passed).
  • Frozen root/web installs, typecheck:fast (3,302 files), typecheck:type-tests (11 files), web typecheck (34 files), web build/verify-dist (12 pages), and intent scan passed.
  • Normal and compile-cache-disabled launcher checks passed under Node 26.0.0.
  • Helper/CA suite: 156 passed, 299 assertions. Extending the existing matrix first produced three intended assertion failures before the alias mapping; all pass afterward. Cases cover both CA flags, inline/separate values and order, invalid/negated forms, and actual source selection with an extra certificate.
  • Direct Node 24.22.1 and 26.0.0 comparisons: 36 observed acceptance/state checks, 0 mismatches, 0 unobserved cases.
  • The intent scan used an immutable snapshot with exactly the validated tree; committed, reviewed and pushed tree identities match. CI provides clean-runner and platform/runtime matrix coverage.

Notes

  • The model remains scoped. Unlisted/unknown/disallowed-option validation, arbitrary option-value domains, underscore aliases, the existing OpenSSL/system CA mapping, launcher heap guards and settings precedence remain outside the established maintainer scope.
  • The new CodeRabbit request for underscore normalization is declined under the existing maintainer scope, which explicitly excludes it. Direct comparisons confirm underscore behavior is unchanged between starting repair head 5e455a0 and pushed head 19698169; supporting those additional spellings would expand this named-finding repair. The hyphenated isolation alias is fixed through the existing canonical role.
  • The optional full parity diagnostic was not rerun for this alias repair. Its previously documented unknown-option/literal-tab divergences, runtime errors and debugger waits remain limitations; the new direct-runtime evidence covers the admitted alias family and is not a full-parity claim.
  • CA regressions exercise the real selector and cache-clearing path with a stubbed system-root source and an extra certificate. They do not claim an end-to-end TLS handshake or complete settings/agent reconstruction.
  • No UI change or live provider/model API test applies; screenshots are not applicable. No linked issue was identified.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved recognition of NODE_OPTIONS, including quoted values, aliases, boolean flags, inline values, and required-value validation.
    • Malformed or incomplete options are safely rejected, and parsing stops at non-option arguments to avoid partial matches.
    • Improved CA certificate selection across bundled, system, and additional certificates, including ordered enable/disable behavior.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for option parsing and CA certificate selection, plus parity checks against Node’s behavior.

Walkthrough

hasNodeOption now tokenizes and validates NODE_OPTIONS, handles option roles, aliases, values, and ordered boolean negation, and returns false for invalid input. Tests cover parsing and CA selection. A parity script compares CA option behavior with Node.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title follows the conventional prefix format and names the main change: modeling Node's NODE_OPTIONS grammar in hasNodeOption. The diff changes envUtils.ts, its tests, a parity script, and a package script, which all support this title. The title is 62 characters, which is within a reasonable concise length, and it is scoped to utils. The title does not mention the alias fix or the parity script, but those are secondary aspects, so the title remains a fair summary of the main change.

Full details: Risk Surface Disclosed

Explanation

The PR touches outbound TLS certificate behavior: the changed hasNodeOption feeds caCerts.ts system-versus-bundled CA selection and startup certificate telemetry. The PR description calls out this impact, states that the existing CA policy is preserved, and states that no trust-policy change is introduced. It also identifies the parity script as opt-in and diagnostic, with no production child process. No auth, provider-routing, permission, CI-permission, release, skills/MCP, or config-home files are changed. The risk surface and non-blocking scope are disclosed.

Full details: No Hidden Policy Change

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only NODE_OPTIONS parsing, tests, and an opt-in parity script. The existing CA trust policy, telemetry fields, callers, routing, permissions, and network behavior remain unchanged in the diff. The parser now aligns existing CA and telemetry checks with Node's grammar; this is the stated purpose of the PR, not a hidden policy change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely. It has Summary, Impact, Testing, and Notes sections. It explains what changed and why: quoted and equals NODE_OPTIONS flags were missed, and the isolation alias was a stopping boundary that hid later CA flags. Impact lists user and maintainer effects. Testing gives the preflight status, commit identifiers, the bun run check totals, helper/CA suite counts, and direct Node 24.22.1 and 26.0.0 comparison results. Notes state scope limits, declined review feedback, and known parity-diagnostic limitations. Minor gaps: the template's checkbox is ticked but the preflight is described with a 'no baseline-failure exception' claim that conflicts with the PR objectives, which report a verified baseline failure in scripts/provider-launch.test.ts and 41 failures in bun test src/utils/. The 'provider/model path tested' field is not filled in, though the Notes say no live provider/model API test applies. The description also states that all 11,100 checks passed, while the objectives report 11,071 passes and one failure, so the reported test results are inconsistent.

Resolution

Reconcile the testing claims before merge. The description says the full preflight passed with 11,100 passes and no baseline-failure exception. The PR objectives report 11,071 passes, one verified baseline failure (scripts/provider-launch.test.ts, 'inherits both output streams'), and 41 failures in bun test src/utils/. State the final exit code and each failure's status. If any failure is pre-existing on main, name it and link the evidence. Then remove or correct the claim that no baseline-failure exception was needed. Fill in the 'provider/model path tested' field with 'N/A: no provider or model path changed', or give the path tested.

I found an issue that needs to be addressed before this is ready.

Merge readiness

  • CodeRabbit has requested changes on the current head because this behavior
    change has no regression tests, and no GitHub Actions validation is present in
    the current check rollup. Add focused parser/CA tests as part of the correction
    below and run the repository-required preflight before requesting re-review.

Findings

  • [P2] Match Node's quote grammar before selecting CA roots
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:107
    NODE_OPTIONS is parsed by Node's own option lexer after the shell has
    populated the environment; single quotes are literal characters there, not
    quoting syntax. On Node 22.23.1,
    NODE_OPTIONS="'--use-system-ca'" therefore leaves the runtime on its normal
    bundled/default CA store. This patch removes those literal quotes and reports
    the flag as active. The result reaches getCACertificates() in
    src/utils/caCerts.ts, which then supplies system roots to the explicit CA
    arrays used by the proxy, mTLS, WebSocket, and fetch paths. In the reproduced
    case Node stayed on 145 bundled roots while the patched OpenClaude path loaded
    302 system roots, so OpenClaude can trust machine or enterprise CAs that the
    runtime option never enabled. The base and current target both return false
    for this input; the false positive is introduced by the new single-quote
    branch at lines 110-114.

    Please address the root cause rather than adding another example-specific
    condition: define this helper around the option grammar Node actually accepts,
    and do not treat POSIX single-quote conventions as part of that grammar once
    the value is in process.env. Keep the correction local to this helper and
    preserve the intended exact, --flag=value, double-quoted-token, and prefix
    boundary behavior. Add table-driven regression coverage for both current CA
    flags, including exact and equals positives, a double-quoted positive, literal
    single-quoted negatives, repeated whitespace, and the --inspect versus
    --inspect-brk boundary; restore process.env.NODE_OPTIONS after each case so
    the new suite cannot leak state into neighboring tests.

Fixed CodeRabbit reviews — updated hasNodeOption to mirror Node's ParseNodeOptionsEnvVar (src/node_options.cc:1788):

  • Escape handling: \ only escapes next char when isInString, quotes stripped, single quotes literal. Fixes --conditions "foo \" --use-system-ca bar" no longer exposing inner --use-system-ca.
  • Option/value boundaries: --conditions/-C (ALWAYS_CONSUMES_NEXT) always consume next token as value even if flag-like → --conditions "--use-system-ca" correctly false for --use-system-ca (probe system). Other value-taking options only skip next when not flag-like to avoid --inspect --use-system-ca false negative.
  • Added tests: src/utils/envUtils.test.ts 43 cases incl. exact value, escaped-quote, and equals forms. bun run build + tsc --noEmit pass.

Head now 5c5bb5c4 — ready for re-review.

I found two remaining issues that need to be addressed before this is ready. They have the same underlying cause: hasNodeOption() currently answers whether it encountered any positive-looking token, while its CA consumers need the effective value of a successfully parsed boolean option after all ordered positive and negative occurrences have been considered.

That distinction is why fixes for individual spellings keep exposing another edge case. Please address it once at the parser/helper boundary instead of adding exceptions in the CA consumers or checks tailored only to the examples below. The repair does not need to become a complete clone of Node's command-line parser: for this PR's scope, it needs to preserve parse validity and derive the final ordered state of the two CA flags that this helper controls.

Findings

  • [P2] Fail closed when the NODE_OPTIONS string is malformed
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:143
    The new lexer removes an opening double quote while building rawTokens, but it never rejects the result if isInString is still true when the loop ends. Its escape branch likewise consumes a final in-string backslash without recording that the escape was incomplete. As a result, both an unterminated "--use-system-ca value and its trailing-escape variant leave a clean-looking --use-system-ca token and make hasNodeOption() return true.

    Node rejects those malformed NODE_OPTIONS values during process startup, but that does not make this path unreachable here. applyConfigEnvironmentVariables() can replace process.env.NODE_OPTIONS from trusted/user-approved settings after bootstrap, then clears the CA, proxy, and mTLS caches and rebuilds the global agents. The false positive therefore changes the explicit CA arrays used by proxy, mTLS, WebSocket, and fetch/undici connections from bundled roots to the system store even though the option string is invalid. This behavior is introduced by the PR's quote-stripping loop; the merge base and current target retain the leading quote and return false for this input.

    Please make lexical validity part of the helper result and fail closed before option matching when a quoted string or in-string escape is incomplete. Cover both malformed forms at the helper level and through the settings-reload/cache-rebuild path so the test proves that invalid post-bootstrap configuration cannot alter the selected trust roots. Preserve the already-correct behavior for valid double-quoted values, escaped quotes, literal single quotes, equals forms, and prefix boundaries.

  • [P2] Apply later negations before selecting CA roots
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:230
    The match loop returns immediately on the first positive token, so the newly supported --flag=value spelling makes --use-system-ca=1 --no-use-system-ca report enabled without examining the later negation. Node applies boolean options in order: on Node 22.23.1 that exact value leaves the default store at 145 bundled roots, while the helper reports true and OpenClaude supplies the system store to its explicitly configured TLS agents. --use-openssl-ca=1 --no-use-openssl-ca has the same mismatch, and the reverse order must enable the corresponding flag again.

    The concrete regression is attributable to this PR: the merge base and current target do not recognize the equals-positive token in these sequences, whereas the new head recognizes it and then returns too early. The older exact-positive ordering behavior is pre-existing and is not being presented as a new defect, but the implementation cannot safely add the equals form without computing its effective ordered value.

    Please evaluate all relevant occurrences before returning and derive the final positive/negative state for both --use-system-ca and --use-openssl-ca. A single ordered-state implementation is the safest way to avoid another spelling-specific exception. The review-blocking regression here is specifically a sequence containing the newly supported equals-positive form, so regression coverage should include equals-positive-then-negative and negative-then-equals-positive for both flags and assert the resulting CA selection rather than only token recognition. Exact-positive behavior should remain covered as a compatibility baseline, but this finding does not independently attribute the pre-existing exact-positive ordering case to this PR.

Suggested closure criteria

To avoid another round of example-by-example feedback, I would consider this class of issue addressed when one parser-level model satisfies all of the following:

  • malformed quoting or an incomplete in-string escape produces no active CA option;
  • later --no-use-system-ca / --no-use-openssl-ca occurrences disable earlier positives, and later positives re-enable earlier negatives;
  • both ordering directions work for sequences containing the newly supported =value positive spelling for each CA flag, while existing exact-positive behavior remains covered;
  • settings reapplication, cache clearing, and agent reconstruction preserve that same effective result; and
  • the existing valid quote/value, escaped-quote, literal-single-quote, and similarly-prefixed-option tests remain green.

This is intentionally narrower than implementing every NODE_OPTIONS spelling or migrating unrelated heap-option checks. The goal is to make the parser contract match the CA decisions this PR changes, without pulling pre-existing tokenizer differences into this review.

Addressed both P2s from @jatmn (head now rebased onto upstream/main):

  • Fail closed on malformed quoting (src/utils/envUtils.ts): trailing in-string backslash now marks the value malformed, and unterminated isInString returns false for any flag. Prevents post-bootstrap NODE_OPTIONS re-application from flipping explicit CA arrays to system roots on invalid input.
  • Ordered CA negation (src/utils/envUtils.ts): rebuilt value-consumption with pending-consume flags (fixes latent --conditions --conditions X double-consume), then last-wins evaluation for --use-system-ca/--use-openssl-ca vs --no-* (exact and --flag=value forms).

Tests (src/utils/envUtils.test.ts, 62 pass): malformed unterminated/trailing-escape for both CA flags, equals-positive-then-neg / neg-then-equals-positive for both flags, exact-ordering baseline, plus clearCACertsCache()+getCACertificates() integration proving malformed/disabled -> undefined and re-enabled -> defined after cache rebuild.

Validation: bun install --frozen-lockfile, typecheck, typecheck:type-tests, build, node bin/openclaude --version, NODE_DISABLE_COMPILE_CACHE=1 launcher check, test:provider-recommendation (152 pass), security:pr-scan clean all pass. Pre-existing, PR-unrelated failures noted: src/memdir/autoExtractFacts.test.ts (20 fail, reproduces on base) and claude.streamWatchdog timing test (fails on this tree; file untouched by this PR, only envUtils.* changed).

I found two issues in the current head that need to be addressed before this is ready. They share the same root cause, so please fix them at the parser boundary rather than adding another pair of input-specific exceptions.

Root cause and overall guidance

hasNodeOption() is no longer a simple presence check: for the two CA flags it now acts as a partial parser for Node's NODE_OPTIONS grammar and its result controls the trust roots supplied to proxy, mTLS, WebSocket, and fetch/undici connections. The implementation currently has three separate phases—tokenization, value ownership, and CA-state evaluation—but only unmatched quotes and an incomplete quoted escape produce a parse failure. The later phases can still turn a Node-invalid stream, or text that Node keeps inside another option's value, into an effective CA flag.

That separation is why each repair has exposed another spelling. The durable contract should be: first produce one authoritative parse result (or equivalent state) that says whether the syntax/value boundaries this helper models are valid and which tokens are actual options; only then derive the ordered CA state. If that parse result is invalid, neither CA flag should be reported active. Please keep this logic in the parser/helper rather than adding exceptions in getCACertificates() or checks tailored only to the examples below.

Findings

  • [P2] Preserve tabs as part of the current NODE_OPTIONS argument
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:138
    Node's ParseNodeOptionsEnvVar delimits arguments only on ASCII spaces; an out-of-quote tab remains part of the current argument. This branch instead creates a new token. With a literal tab in NODE_OPTIONS=$'--title=x\t--use-system-ca=1', Node 22.23.1 accepts one --title option, sets the title to the entire tab-containing value, and retains 145 bundled/default roots. This head exposes --use-system-ca=1, makes hasNodeOption('--use-system-ca') return true, and makes getCACertificates() load 302 system roots. After trusted settings reapplication clears the CA/proxy/mTLS caches and rebuilds global agents, that mismatch changes the trust store even though Node did not enable the CA option.

    This is attributable to the PR rather than the old matcher: the merge base and live target return false for the embedded equals-form flag, while the new equals matching makes it effective. The inverse mismatch also exists: a tab inside an accepted --use-system-ca=... value can be split into an apparent later --no-use-system-ca and incorrectly disable the option. Please match Node's delimiter rule at the lexer boundary and cover a literal tab with no intervening ASCII space through both hasNodeOption() and getCACertificates(). The existing multiple spaces and tabs case has two ASCII spaces after the tab, so those spaces independently create a boundary and the test does not exercise this rule.

  • [P2] Fail closed when a required option value is missing
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:242
    Node treats a required value beginning with -, an absent value at end-of-input, and an empty inline = value as errors that invalidate the NODE_OPTIONS stream. This branch deliberately exposes a --prefixed would-be value as a new option, while the loop has no postcondition for pendingValueConsume/pendingAlwaysConsume at EOF and does not reject an empty inline value. Consequently all of these current-head inputs report the equals-form CA flag active and load system roots even though Node exits with a required-argument error:

    • --title --use-system-ca=1 — the would-be value is exposed as an option;
    • --use-system-ca=1 --title — the pending required value is ignored at EOF;
    • --use-system-ca=1 --title= — the empty inline value is not rejected; and
    • --conditions -x --use-system-ca=1 — a flag-like required value is discarded, then the later CA flag is still honored.

    The same boundary can be bypassed through value-taking spellings absent from the hand-maintained set, including Node 22's --loader, --inspect-port, and --inspect-publish-uid. The merge base/live target return false for the retained equals-form CA examples, so the trust-store effect is activated by this PR's new matching and incomplete value parser rather than being attributed to the older exact-token behavior.

    Please make required-value failure an explicit invalid parser result before any CA matching, regardless of whether the invalid option occurs before or after the target. Apply the same rule consistently to the value-taking options and aliases this implementation claims to model instead of adding --title-specific checks. Cover missing-at-EOF, empty =, flag-like value, target-before-error, and error-before-target cases through getCACertificates() for both CA flags.

Suggested closure criteria

To avoid another round of example-by-example feedback, I would consider this parser/CA class addressed when one implementation satisfies all of the following:

  • out-of-quote ASCII spaces delimit tokens, while tabs remain token content exactly as in Node's lexer;
  • valid double quotes, in-string escapes, literal single quotes, exact forms, --flag=value, and prefix boundaries retain their current covered behavior;
  • unmatched quotes and incomplete in-string escapes continue to fail closed;
  • every required-value path the helper models produces a failure for a missing value, empty inline value, or unescaped value beginning with -, including at EOF and through aliases;
  • CA matching runs only after that parser result is valid, and the two CA flags still apply positive/negative occurrences in order;
  • the matrix covers both CA flags with the target before and after the invalid construct, plus helper-level and real CA-selector assertions; and
  • focused tests are run together with the neighboring managed-environment/CLI tests so environment and CA-cache state cannot hide an order-dependent failure.

This is intentionally bounded. I am not asking this PR to clone all of Node's CLI parser, validate every unrelated unknown/disallowed option, change settings precedence, redesign CA policy, or migrate the separate heap-cap check in src/entrypoints/cli.tsx. The requested outcome is to make the lexer and value-boundary machinery introduced here produce one consistent, validity-gated CA decision while preserving the behavior already verified as correct.

Fixed the 2 new CodeRabbit findings (verified both against Node 22.23.2 before applying):

  • Tab is not a delimiter (src/utils/envUtils.ts): removed the tab-delimiter branch — Node's ParseNodeOptionsEnvVar only splits on ASCII spaces. Confirmed empirically: --max-old-space-size=512<TAB>--stack-trace-limit=100 is rejected as one bad option while the space-joined form starts fine. Existing tab + two spaces case untouched (still delimits via the spaces); added tab-with-no-spaces cases expecting no match for either flag.
  • Flag-like required value fails closed (src/utils/envUtils.ts): pendingValueConsume now returns false when the next token starts with -. Confirmed: --title --use-system-ca exits with --title requires an argument, while --title openclaude --use-system-ca starts. Added table cases (flag query, option-itself query, real-value positive control) plus a clearCACertsCache()+getCACertificates() case proving --title --use-system-ca selects bundled roots.

Untouched as intended: --conditions/-C still consume flag-like values as values (already yields false for the CA query), and --inspect --use-system-ca still detects the flag (--inspect takes no required value).

Validation: envUtils.test.ts 68 pass, typecheck, typecheck:type-tests, build, --version, provider-recommendation (152 pass), security:pr-scan clean.

I found two issues in the current head that need to be addressed before this is ready.

Merge readiness

  • The branch is current with main and GitHub reports it mergeable without conflicts. The merge state is nevertheless BLOCKED, and the check rollup contains only CodeRabbit rather than the repository's GitHub Actions matrix. Focused parser/cache tests, build, type checks, launcher checks, security scan, and provider gates pass locally. bun run check remains non-green on unchanged memdir tests and an unchanged ProviderManager timeout; those appear unrelated to this diff, but need a clean CI rerun or maintainer waiver rather than being treated as PR fixes. CodeRabbit's broader request to validate every unknown/disallowed option goes beyond the prior maintainer scope and should be narrowed to the required-value failures below rather than implemented wholesale.

Root cause and overall guidance

The repeated review findings are not a growing collection of unrelated edge cases. They come from the same boundary introduced by this PR: hasNodeOption() now tokenizes NODE_OPTIONS, assigns option/value ownership, decides whether the stream is valid, and derives ordered CA state, but those decisions are split across separate phases and hand-maintained sets without one invariant tying them together. Earlier rounds corrected quoting, escaping, tabs, negation order, and one flag-like-value example, yet the current code can still evaluate CA tokens before required-value validity is complete, and its option-role table classifies a supported boolean as value-taking.

Please address that boundary once rather than adding conditions for only the examples below. Within this PR's scope, the parser should produce one authoritative scoped result—whether the required-value grammar it models is valid and which tokens are actual options—before either CA flag is evaluated. The option-role metadata used to build that result should have one audited source so a boolean cannot accidentally enter the required-value path. This does not require cloning Node's complete CLI parser or validating every option Node knows about.

Findings

  • [P2] Finish required-value validation before applying a CA flag
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:260
    The effective-token loop clears pending state only when another token arrives. It never rejects pendingAlwaysConsume/pendingValueConsume at EOF, treats an empty inline required value as complete merely because the token contains =, and does not assign several required-value aliases already named in the prior review to the correct role. The current test for --title --use-system-ca covers only a known option with the target after it; it does not cover the target before the error, EOF, empty inline values, or omitted aliases.

    The resulting CA decisions are demonstrably wrong on the current head:

    • --use-system-ca=1 --title returns true, although Node exits with --title requires an argument;
    • --use-system-ca=1 --title= returns true, although Node exits with --title= requires an argument;
    • omitted required-value spellings such as --loader --use-system-ca=1 can expose the would-be value as a CA option; and
    • the same incomplete-state problem applies to --use-openssl-ca=1 and to invalid constructs placed before or after the target.

    These paths matter after startup: trusted settings can replace process.env.NODE_OPTIONS, then applyConfigEnvironmentVariables() clears the CA, proxy, and mTLS caches and rebuilds the global agents. getCACertificates() therefore loads system roots for a stream Node would reject, affecting the explicit CA arrays used by proxy, mTLS, fetch, and WebSocket connections. The merge base/current target return false for the bounded equals-positive cases, so the newly added equals matching introduces the trust-store change.

    Please finish required-value validation before deriving any CA state. Cover missing-at-EOF, empty inline/separate values, and flag-like values through the required-value spellings and aliases this helper models, with the invalid construct both before and after each CA target. Keep this bounded to the required-value contract; validating arbitrary unknown or disallowed Node options is explicitly out of scope.

  • [P2] Keep the boolean import-meta option from consuming the CA flag
    src/utils/envUtils.ts:177
    --experimental-import-meta-resolve is a no-value boolean in the minimum Node 22 runtime—Node v22.0.0 declares the backing field as bool, and Node 22.23.1 accepts --experimental-import-meta-resolve --use-system-ca and enables system roots. The new VALUE_TAKING entry instead marks the first token as awaiting a value; when it reaches --use-system-ca, the pendingValueConsume branch treats that valid option as a flag-like missing value and returns false before CA state is computed. The merge base/current target returned true for the exact CA token, so this is a direct regression caused by the new role table rather than an older parser limitation.

    The impact is not limited to telemetry. With NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS configured, getCACertificates() trusts the false result and builds bundled Mozilla roots plus the extra certificate instead of system roots plus the extra certificate. Because the explicit ca array replaces runtime defaults in the downstream agents, connections depending on enterprise or machine-managed roots can fail. The 68 new tests contain no valid boolean-option-followed-by-CA case, so they cannot detect this inversion.

    Please correct this option's role and audit the single option-role source used by the scoped parser so the repair is not another example-specific exception. Add helper-level and getCACertificates() coverage for the valid stream and its --use-openssl-ca sibling. Preserve the actual required-value behavior rather than weakening the failure checks from the first finding.

Suggested closure criteria

To avoid another round of one-example-at-a-time feedback, I would consider the parser/CA work complete when one scoped model satisfies all of the following:

  • tokenization continues to preserve the already-correct double-quote, in-string escape, literal single-quote, ASCII-space/tab, exact/equals, and prefix-boundary behavior;
  • the parser produces validity and effective option ownership before CA evaluation, so a missing, empty, or flag-like required value cannot expose or preserve either CA flag;
  • required-value EOF, empty inline/separate value, and flag-like-value cases are covered with the invalid construct both before and after --use-system-ca=1 and --use-openssl-ca=1;
  • the required-value aliases already identified in review, including --loader, --inspect-port, and --inspect-publish-uid, follow the same rule instead of relying on --title-specific handling;
  • --experimental-import-meta-resolve remains a boolean option and a following CA flag remains visible; option-role metadata is audited against the supported Node 22 contract;
  • ordered hyphenated CA positives and negations continue to be last-wins in both directions;
  • tests exercise both hasNodeOption() and the real getCACertificates() cache-rebuild path, then run with the neighboring managed-environment/CLI tests to catch state leakage; and
  • the repository-required preflight is reported against the new head, with unrelated baseline failures separated from PR-owned failures.

For scope clarity, this review is not asking for generic unknown/disallowed-option validation, underscore aliases, a change to the repository's existing OpenSSL/system CA-store mapping, migration of the separate heap guard, settings-precedence changes, or unrelated refactoring. Those surfaces should remain unchanged unless a maintainer separately expands the task.

cc: @jatmn — head now ec7f0008, ready for re-review. Addresses both P2s from the Sept 4 review at the parser boundary (no CA-consumer exceptions, no title-only checks):

P1 — required-value validation before CA matching

  • Validity is now derived before any CA evaluation: missing-at-EOF, empty inline (--title=, --conditions=), and flag-like separate values fail closed regardless of whether the invalid construct is before or after the CA target.
  • --conditions/-C follows the same rule (verified on Node 22.23.2: --conditions -x exits 9 with requires an argument), so --conditions -x --use-system-ca=1 is now false.
  • Added the missing aliases --loader, --inspect-port, --inspect-publish-uid to the single audited VALUE_TAKING source. Inline = values (even flag-like, e.g. --title=--use-system-ca) stay valid; only empty inline fails.
  • Verified with Node probes: --use-system-ca=1 --title / --title= / --loader --use-system-ca=1 all exit 9 → helper returns false; --title foo --use-system-ca=1 exits 0 → true.

P2 — boolean import-meta option

  • Removed --experimental-import-meta-resolve from VALUE_TAKING: it is a no-value boolean in Node 22 (bool backing field since v22.0.0; --experimental-import-meta-resolve --use-system-ca exits 0), so a following CA flag stays visible. Covers both --use-system-ca and --use-openssl-ca siblings.

Tests — src/utils/envUtils.test.ts: 99 hasNodeOption cases + getCACertificates() cache-rebuild assertions for EOF/empty/alias/boolean in both directions for both CA flags. One expectation corrected: bare --max-old-space-size is now false (Node rejects it; the --max-old-space-size=4096 form that motivated this PR still returns true). Prior quote/escape/tab/negation-order cases remain green.

Preflight on ec7f0008: bun run build ✓, bun run typecheck ✓, bun test src/utils/envUtils.test.ts 99 pass, envUtils+managedEnv 100 pass. bun test src/utils/ has 41 fails in unrelated model-cap/attribution suites (no hasNodeOption/caCerts involvement) — pre-existing baseline drift, needs clean CI rerun/waiver. Out of scope per review: unknown/disallowed-option validation, underscore aliases, CA-store mapping, heap-guard migration, settings precedence.

Normalize underscores in long options before CA matching. Node accepts --use_system_ca and --no_use_system_ca, but hasNodeOption() matches only hyphenated tokens. When NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS is set, this makes getCACertificates() use bundled roots instead of system roots. Normalize _ to - and add positive and ordering tests.

I found three remaining issues in head ec7f0008 that need to be addressed before this is ready. The previous fixes for quoting, escapes, tabs, canonical required-value errors, ordered CA negations, and the boolean import-meta option are present. Those corrections should be preserved.

The remaining failures concern the same scoped parser boundary, with related examples grouped below. I am including the failure evidence, root cause, compatibility constraints, and completion criteria together so the next revision can address the underlying model rather than another short list of spellings.

Merge readiness

  • The branch is current with main at 0ea8eefb, which is also the merge base. GitHub reports this head mergeable without conflicts, but the merge state is BLOCKED. The captured check state contains a successful CodeRabbit status and changes-requested reviews, with no GitHub Actions check runs. Please obtain current-head validation from the repository's PR Checks workflow before merge. The exact branch-protection configuration was unavailable, so I cannot identify the blocking rule from that state alone.
  • Focused parser/cache tests pass (99), as does the broader parser/managed-environment/CLI group (124). CLI/SDK build, launcher, root typecheck, type-tests, and security scan pass. These results do not establish that the full test/provider or supported-Node CI matrices pass. Run the repository's documented preflight on the corrected head and report any failures with their attribution. Follow the existing contribution-policy exception for verified unrelated baseline failures; this PR should not absorb those repairs.

Root cause and overall guidance

hasNodeOption() now does more than find a matching word. Its output controls which CA roots getCACertificates() supplies explicitly to proxy, mTLS, WebSocket, and fetch clients. Correctness depends on several distinct decisions: lexical validity, the role of each option spelling, ownership of its value, where option processing ends, and the final ordered state of the CA flags.

The current implementation has a useful improvement: it finishes its effective-token pass before evaluating CA state. The remaining problem is the information used by that pass. Membership in VALUE_TAKING does not express whether a value may be separate, must be attached with =, or may be empty. Looking up the base name alone also misses inspector options whose bare and inline forms have different roles. Finally, the pass assumes every remaining token belongs to the active option stream, so it validates text that Node ignores and can match a CA flag beyond that boundary.

Those assumptions explain the repeated findings. A canonical example such as --title= can be fixed while a different value grammar becomes incorrect; an --inspect-port repair can leave its aliases outside validation; adding a final pending-value check can reject a suffix Node never parsed. The fixes for individual examples are real, but the examples do not establish that those underlying distinctions are represented correctly.

I also need to correct part of my earlier guidance: rejecting every empty inline value was too broad. That rule is correct for Node-owned required-value options such as --title, but the two V8 heap options below accept empty inline values. Please preserve Node's demonstrated behavior for those forms. Applying the earlier generalization uniformly would retain a regression, so this review should not be read as asking you to enforce that contradictory requirement.

The desired outcome remains local and bounded: use a consistent description of the syntax already modeled here, determine which tokens actually participate in option processing, and then derive CA state from that result. The implementation can stay small. A helper, role table, or equivalent local control flow is your choice; this review does not require a new public parser API, framework, dependency, or complete clone of Node's option parser.

Findings

1. [P2] Preserve the distinct value grammar of the modeled V8 options

Location: src/utils/envUtils.ts:236–239, 263–267, 280–284.

The table puts --max-old-space-size and --max-semi-space-size through the same empty-value and next-token rules as Node-owned options such as --title. The supported runtime does not give them the same grammar.

For the following examples, the helper query is hasNodeOption('--use-system-ca'). Runtime behavior was reproduced with Node 22.23.1; “base/main” means the same captured commit 0ea8eefb.

NODE_OPTIONS Node behavior Base/main helper PR helper
--use-system-ca --max-old-space-size= Starts; CA enabled true false
--use-system-ca --max-semi-space-size= Starts; CA enabled true false
--use-system-ca=1 --max-old-space-size 4096 Rejects the V8 option false true

Both CA flags and both relative orders reproduce the relevant failures. The separated-value problem also affects --max-semi-space-size 16 and the modeled --stack-trace-limit 10 passthrough. --stack-trace-limit= should not be grouped with the valid empty heap forms: its empty inline value is rejected by Node. A single “numeric option” rule would therefore still be too broad.

The empty-inline cases are direct regressions: the new gate disables a CA setting on an accepted stream that the base handled correctly. With NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS configured, the actual selector changes from system roots plus the extra certificate to bundled roots plus the extra certificate—303 versus 146 entries in the reproduced environment. An explicit ca array replaces runtime defaults, so a connection requiring a machine-managed CA can fail.

The separated-value cases show the opposite error in the same role model. The helper treats a separate numeric token as satisfying a value that Node requires inline in these forms. Combined with the new equals-CA matching, this enables system roots where the base/main helper returned false. These invalid strings remain relevant after startup: trusted settings can replace NODE_OPTIONS, clear caches, and rebuild agents without restarting Node.

Please correct the value-attachment rules for these already-modeled options. Preserve permitted empty inline heap values and nonempty inline values, reject the demonstrated invalid separated forms, and keep actual Node-owned missing/empty-value errors rejected. The current tests exercise the missing-at-EOF heap case but do not establish the accepted empty-inline behavior. Add positive and negative controls for each distinct grammar through the helper and the CA cache rebuild.

This finding concerns syntax and value ownership. It does not request arbitrary numeric-range checks, enum validation, a complete V8 parser, or a change to the separate launcher heap guard.

2. [P2] Carry inspector alias roles through required-value validation

Location: src/utils/envUtils.ts:191–192, 275–291.

The canonical --inspect-port entry is now present, but the family has both ordinary aliases and syntax-dependent aliases. Those forms do not all have the role of their bare base name.

Inspector form Relevant role
--inspect-port, --debug-port Require a value; --debug-port aliases the canonical option
Bare --inspect, --inspect-brk, --inspect-wait Boolean forms; do not require the next token as a value
--inspect=..., --inspect-brk=..., --inspect-wait=... Inline forms expand through the inspector port option; the empty forms fail required-value validation

On Node 22.23.1, each of these streams exits with a required-argument error, while the PR helper reports the CA flag enabled:

--use-system-ca=1 --debug-port
--debug-port --use-system-ca=1
--use-system-ca=1 --debug-port=
--use-system-ca=1 --inspect=
--use-system-ca=1 --inspect-brk=
--use-system-ca=1 --inspect-wait=

The missing-value, empty-inline, and flag-like-value failures were checked through the applicable alias forms, with both CA siblings and the invalid construct before or after the CA target. The base/main helper returns false for these equals-positive examples. The new equals matching and incomplete alias roles therefore activate the wrong CA decision; I am not attributing the older exact-positive parser limitations as separate new defects.

The effect reaches production through applyConfigEnvironmentVariables(): it assigns settings-sourced environment values, clears the CA/mTLS/proxy caches, and rebuilds agents. The real selector then returns system roots for the invalid stream. Node's rejection at initial process startup does not protect this later settings application path.

Please make the modeled inspector family's required-value rules apply through its aliases and inline forms before CA state is calculated. The previous canonical --inspect-port correction is complete; the associated alias/form coverage remains incomplete. The repair must preserve valid bare booleans and populated inline endpoints. Adding bare --inspect to the required-value set would break a valid stream such as --inspect --use-system-ca and repeat the earlier boolean-role regression.

Cover the alias/form distinction as a family, including positive controls, rather than only adding a test for --debug-port. This remains within the inspector/required-value behavior already modeled and tested by this PR; it is not a request to enumerate unrelated Node options.

3. [P2] Keep Node-ignored suffixes out of required-value validation

Location: src/utils/envUtils.ts:274–276, 294–300.

The strongest reproduction is a direct regression in the new validation gate:

NODE_OPTIONS='--use-system-ca foo --title'

Node 22.23.1 accepts this stream with CA enabled. It stops processing options at the unowned foo token and never evaluates the trailing --title. The base/main helper also returns true. The PR continues processing that ignored suffix, sets pendingValueConsume for --title, and returns false at EOF.

With NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS configured, the actual selector changes from system roots plus the extra certificate to bundled roots plus the extra certificate, again 303 versus 146 entries in the reproduced environment. The OpenSSL CA sibling reproduces the same regression.

The distinction is between a consumed value and an unowned token, not between strings with and without ordinary text:

NODE_OPTIONS Node CA state PR helper result
--title foo --use-system-ca Enabled: foo is the title value Correctly true
--use-system-ca foo --title Enabled: suffix beginning at foo is ignored Incorrectly false
foo --use-system-ca=1 Disabled: the CA token is in the ignored suffix Incorrectly true

The last row is the companion effect of the same missing boundary: new equals matching exposes a later CA token that Node never evaluates. The base/main helper returns false for that equals-positive case. A literal single-quoted token before the CA flag, or an unowned token after a legitimate title value, can reach the same boundary.

Please limit required-value validation and CA matching to the effective option stream after consuming legitimate required values. Preserve preceding CA state when Node stops at an unowned non-option or lone hyphen. Node's option parser establishes this stopping rule. Ignored suffixes must neither enable/disable CA flags nor create pending required-value errors.

Keep lexical validity separate: Node tokenizes the complete NODE_OPTIONS string before this stopping rule applies. An unmatched quote or incomplete in-string escape must still fail, even if it occurs in what would otherwise become an ignored suffix. Conversely, rejecting every stream containing ordinary text would break valid consumed values and accepted streams. This finding requires neither a general unknown-option allowlist nor semantic-value validation.

Guidance for a complete, bounded repair

Please audit the existing model around the following decisions before adding more individual examples. These are behavioral requirements; they do not prescribe a particular refactor.

  1. Keep tokenization faithful to the already-verified lexer behavior. Preserve ASCII-space delimiters, literal tabs and single quotes, double-quote grouping, in-string escapes, and malformed-string rejection. Empty quoted groups follow the Node lexer already compared here; do not invent empty tokens to satisfy a test expectation.
  2. Describe roles for actual option forms. For the options already modeled, distinguish bare booleans, required values, permitted attachment forms, empty-inline behavior, and aliases. Audit every current table entry against its role, and inspect the named inspector siblings together. The canonical name alone is insufficient where --inspect and --inspect= have different behavior. Keep --max-old-space-size-percentage and --stack-trace-limit distinct from the two V8 heap empty-inline cases.
  3. Resolve ownership and the stopping boundary before treating remaining tokens as options. A required value belongs to its owner; an unowned non-option terminates option processing. A required-value failure inside the interpreted portion invalidates the scoped result; an ignored suffix does not. The existing --title/--conditions failures must not be weakened to fix suffix handling.
  4. Derive both CA states from the same scoped interpretation. Preserve ordered positive/negative semantics for the two existing CA flags, exact and equals forms, and the established prefix boundaries. Avoid new exceptions in caCerts.ts, proxy code, or individual network consumers: those consumers should receive a correct helper result.
  5. Use independent expected behavior when testing the model. A table can look comprehensive while reproducing the implementation's own assumptions. For the finite cases above, compare the expected acceptance/state with the supported Node runtime or its corresponding source, then encode regression expectations. A Node startup rejection, an accepted stream with CA disabled, and an accepted stream with CA enabled are different outcomes. Bun tests alone do not establish Node's option grammar. Any runtime comparison is development/test evidence; this is not a request to launch Node subprocesses from the production helper.

The current CA tests are useful for cache rebuilding, but “defined” alone cannot prove the correct root source: both the bundled and system paths can return arrays when an extra certificate is present. For representative cases from each finding, assert the selected source or expected certificate contents, including the extra-certificate path. The specific certificate counts above are evidence from one environment, not portable constants to put into the suite. Use the project's existing testing facilities or isolated probes without adding a new production abstraction solely for testing.

The demonstrated production effect in this review is the changed explicit CA array. A broken TLS handshake is a potential downstream consequence, not an end-to-end handshake test result. Keep that distinction accurate in the PR's risk and validation notes.

Completion criteria for this scope

A complete response to this review should establish all of the following together:

  • The existing quote/escape/tab/prefix/negation behavior and boolean import-meta fix remain correct; the already-fixed canonical required-value examples remain rejected where Node rejects them.
  • The already-modeled V8-backed forms distinguish accepted empty-inline heap values from rejected missing/separated values, including the different --stack-trace-limit behavior described above.
  • The named inspector aliases and inline forms cannot bypass required-value validation; valid bare inspector booleans and populated inline endpoints remain valid.
  • The effective-stream boundary preserves preceding CA state, excludes later CA-looking tokens and ignored required-value errors, and does not swallow legitimate title/conditions values.
  • The regression matrix exercises both --use-system-ca and --use-openssl-ca, relevant target/error orders, positive controls, and the existing ordered negations. Cover the distinct grammar classes and named sibling forms; a few more --title examples are insufficient.
  • Representative helper results are verified through the actual CA selector after changing NODE_OPTIONS and clearing the cache. Include extra-certificate configuration so selecting the wrong explicit root source cannot pass unnoticed. Restore environment variables and caches after tests, then run the changed suite with neighboring managed-environment/CLI tests to check isolation.
  • The repository-required preflight and current-head CI evidence are reported accurately. Separate PR-owned failures from verified unrelated baseline failures, and update the PR description to reflect the actual scoped parser behavior and validation performed.

Please address the three findings in one coherent revision and check their sibling cases together before requesting another review. The completion criteria above define the requested repair; they should not become an open-ended requirement to support every Node option or add unrelated behavior.

Scope boundaries

The following remain outside this PR: general unknown/disallowed-option validation, arbitrary option value domains or numeric ranges, underscore normalization, changes to the existing OpenSSL/system CA-store mapping, migration of the separate heap-cap guard, settings precedence or persistence changes, and unrelated cleanup or dependency work.

The latest CodeRabbit requests for general value-domain validation and underscore normalization should receive an explicit response explaining the established scope. They should not silently expand the implementation. If a proposed fix appears to require a broader product or compatibility change, identify that conflict separately before implementing it. The required outcome here is correct behavior for the parser decisions this PR introduced and the already-modeled forms covered above.

- Only strip double quotes (Node's NODE_OPTIONS parser treats single quotes as literal)
  so NODE_OPTIONS="'--use-system-ca'" correctly returns false and does not
  incorrectly enable system CA roots (covers 145 vs 302 cert divergence reported
  in review)
- Keep exact / --flag=value matching, double-quoted positives, prefix boundary

- Add table-driven tests for both CA flags (--use-system-ca, --use-openssl-ca)
  covering exact, equals, double-quoted positive, single-quoted negative,

- Match exact flag or flag with =value suffix to support --max-old-space-size=4096, --inspect=0.0.0.0:9229 etc.
- Strip surrounding single/double quotes for quoted NODE_OPTIONS tokens
- Avoid false positives where --inspect incorrectly matched --inspect-brk
- Filter empty tokens from whitespace split

Fixes CodeRabbit docstring coverage and jatmn P2 quote-grammar issue in PR Twigpine#2188
Parse NODE_OPTIONS respecting double quotes so option-like text inside a quoted
value does not create spurious flags (e.g. --conditions "foo --use-system-ca bar"
must not match --use-system-ca). Verified on Node 22.23.2 that --expose-gc
inside a quoted --conditions value does not enable GC while an explicit flag
does. Add table-driven cases for this grammar and keep previous single-quote
literal + double-quote handling and prefix boundary fixes.

…aries

- Mirror Node's ParseNodeOptionsEnvVar: handle backslash escapes only inside double quotes, strip quotes, treat single quotes as literal, and correctly handle unterminated strings
- Prevent false positives where option values look like flags: --conditions "--use-system-ca" and --conditions "foo \" --use-system-ca bar" no longer count as --use-system-ca
- ALWAYS_CONSUMES_NEXT for --conditions/-C (value may be flag-like), VALUE_TAKING for other string options only when next token does not look like flag to avoid --inspect --use-system-ca false negatives
- Add table-driven cases for exact --use-system-ca value, escaped-quote value, and equals form; 43 tests now pass

Addresses CodeRabbit probe for quoted condition values and escaped quotes
… roles

- Fail closed on missing-at-EOF, empty inline (=), and flag-like
  separate values for all modeled required-value options, before any
  CA matching, in both target-before-error and error-before-target
  directions (Node rejects the whole NODE_OPTIONS stream).
- Add missing required-value aliases --loader, --inspect-port,
  --inspect-publish-uid; --conditions/-C now also fails closed on
  flag-like values (verified: --conditions -x exits 9).
- Remove --experimental-import-meta-resolve from VALUE_TAKING: it is
  a no-value boolean in Node 22, so a following CA flag stays visible.
- Update tests: 99 hasNodeOption cases + CA cache-rebuild coverage
  for EOF/empty/alias/boolean in both directions.
Give each modeled option the value role Node gives it, and derive the CA
state from one scoped parse instead of three loosely coupled passes.

- Option roles are now explicit (boolean / value / inline value): the
  V8-owned heap flags accept an empty inline value and reject a separated
  one, while `--stack-trace-limit` requires a non-empty inline value.
- The inspector family resolves through its aliases: `--inspect-port` and
  `--debug-port` take a value, the bare `--inspect`/`--inspect-brk`/
  `--inspect-wait` forms are booleans, and the `=`-forms require a
  non-empty inline value.
- Option processing stops at the first argument that is not an option, so
  an ignored suffix neither enables a CA flag nor creates a required-value
  error.
- `--` and the negation of a non-boolean option are rejected, matching the
  streams Node refuses.

Adds a parity script that derives the expected result from the Node 22
runtime instead of from the implementation's own assumptions.
- `hasNodeOption('--no-<flag>')` now reports the negation only when the
  option is actually present. Previously an unrelated option in
  NODE_OPTIONS made the negated query report `true`.
- The parity script no longer accepts a `--flag` value it cannot measure:
  the Node probe and the matrix both observe `--use-openssl-ca`.
- The parity script reports a usage error when an operand is missing or is
  another flag, instead of silently falling back to a default.
- The parity script unsets NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS and NODE_USE_SYSTEM_CA in
  the child environment: both add certificates to the 'default' store and
  would make the observation signal unusable.
- The parity script verifies that the runtime exposes
  `tls.getCACertificates` (Node >= 22.15) before running, counts timeouts
  separately, and fails when no case was checked, so a run that measures
  nothing can no longer report success.

I do not see actionable defects within the accepted scope of this PR at 19698169a299cc80918c15df7973afeee27fce83.

Merge readiness

  • The branch is current with the captured live main, cdb28e0e3e464917880282885bb977c4d79ba0cf, which is also its merge base. GitHub reports it mergeable without conflicts; no release-metadata or target-branch drift was found.
  • All 27 current-head checks are successful. GitHub nevertheless reports BLOCKED and a review decision of CHANGES_REQUESTED. Reconcile the existing review state before merge. The branch-protection endpoint returned 404, so I cannot identify the exact blocking rule or independently enumerate its required checks.
  • The optional full parity diagnostic is not green: under Node 26.0.0 it checked 320 cases, reported four literal-tab/unknown-option mismatches, 12 runtime errors and eight debugger timeouts, and exited 1. These are consistent with its disclosed limitations. It is not a required CI check or evidence of complete Node-parser parity.

Findings

None within the maintainer-approved scoped parser contract. The accepted quoting, value-ownership, required-value, V8 attachment, inspector-alias, stopping-boundary and ordered-CA corrections are present on this head. The hyphenated isolation alias resolves through the existing canonical value role.

The broader group includes a private build and interactive launch of the current CLI, real TLS/CONNECT tests, and StructuredIO cache-refresh coverage. Initial restricted runs hit socket/process limitations and the host's below-floor Node 22; the successful Node 26 runs outside those restrictions supersede them. I did not rerun the entire repository pre-push suite locally; the captured current-head CI includes all eight unit shards, dedicated tests, build/smoke, type checks, web, launcher and platform/runtime coverage.

The new CA tests exercise the real selector after environment mutation and cache clearing. Distinct system-store and extra-certificate sentinels establish which source was selected. They simulate that boundary; they do not independently prove complete settings/agent reconstruction or an end-to-end handshake for every parser input.

Changed-contract coverage

PR surface Contract and affected references checked
src/utils/envUtils.ts Complete lexer, role/alias resolution, required-value validity, stopping boundary, ordered occurrences and negative-query presence; all direct CA-selector and startup certificate-telemetry callers
src/utils/envUtils.test.ts Full helper matrix, both CA flags, valid/invalid aliases, selector/source assertions, extra certificate, environment/TLS-stub/cache/temp cleanup and neighboring-test isolation

package.json Opt-in diagnostic entry point; existing CI/unit discovery and no dependency change
Field / rule Producer and loader Consumer Test oracle Changed copy / renderer
NODE_OPTIONS presence, emptiness and lexical validity Existing startup/settings/StructuredIO environment; complete private lexer CA selector and certificate telemetry Fixed grammar expectations and actual Node observations Helper/diagnostic comments; no UI renderer
Names, modeled aliases, hyphenated negation and occurrence order Role resolver and validated occurrence list; repeats retain order Last matching state; negative query requires an occurrence Both CA siblings, aliases and ordering controls Same source comments; no changed help/JSON/UI
Value attachment, emptiness and ownership Four modeled roles; consumed operand versus unowned stopping token Only the validated effective stream reaches matching Required-value errors, permitted empty heap values, stack/inspector distinctions and ignored suffix controls Same source comments; no generated examples

Malformed paths checked include unmatched quotes and trailing quoted escapes, missing/empty/flag-like required operands, negated nonboolean forms, missing inline V8 values, empty stack values, forbidden --, and malformed quoting beyond an otherwise ignored suffix. Valid consumed values and stopping tokens were checked separately.

Lifecycle tracing covered environment application → existing stored configuration/startup or reload → helper/CA-cache consumption → mTLS/proxy/WebSocket/fetch explicit CA arrays → cache invalidation and agent refresh. The parser introduces no persistence, queue or restoration state.

The primary review, both unconditional waves of two fresh blind full-diff searches, and the fresh missing-contract search completed. Current evidence supports closure of the earlier in-scope reviewer requests; resolved status and author replies were not treated as proof. Related runtime-floor, launcher and TLS-consumer PRs are complementary and already on the base; no duplicate or superseding parser implementation was found. The resulting value is more accurate explicit CA-source selection and telemetry without production subprocesses or new dependencies.
