Complete Guide to the Battleship Game Rules and How to Play Battleship is a two-player naval game. In this version, you play against artificial intelligence (AI). Game Objective Your main objective is to sink all the enemy ships. Each ship is made up of a number of squares, and when all squares of a ship are hit, that ship is sunk. Each ship has multiple squares that you must find and shoot to sink the ship. Ships in the Game There are 5 ships in the game: The first ship is called the Carrier and consists of 5 squares. This is the largest ship in the game. The second ship is called the Battleship and consists of 4 squares. The third ship is called the Cruiser and consists of 3 squares. The fourth ship is called the Submarine and consists of 3 squares. The fifth ship is called the Destroyer and consists of 2 squares. Game Board The game board is a 10x10 grid marked with letters A to J for rows and numbers 1 to 10 for columns. For example, square A1 refers to the first row, first column. When you shoot, the result is one of the following three outcomes: Hit: You have hit one of the enemy ship’s squares. Miss: Your shot missed and hit nothing. Sunk: You have found all the squares of a ship, and that ship is sunk. How to Play At the start of the game, you have a marker on the board that you can move with the arrow keys. When the marker is on a square, the game announces the name of that square along with its status. To shoot, simply press the Enter key. The game will then inform you whether you hit the target or not. If you shoot one of the enemy ships, the game will notify you. If you find all the squares of a ship, the game will announce the ship’s name and that it has sunk. After your shot, it’s the AI’s turn, and the AI will shoot at one of your squares. The game will also inform you of the AI’s shot result. Artificial Intelligence The AI in this game is intelligent. When it hits one of your ships, it checks the surrounding squares to complete the sinking of the ship. This means if the AI hits your ship once, there’s a high probability it will hit the same ship on subsequent turns to sink it. The game continues until all the ships of one side are sunk. If all your ships are sunk, you lose. If all the AI’s ships are sunk, you win. Game Control Keys Movement Keys Arrow Up / Arrow Down Keys: These keys move the marker vertically along the columns. Pressing the Up key moves the marker to the square above, and pressing the Down key moves it to the square below. With each move, the game announces the current square’s name and status. Arrow Left / Arrow Right Keys: These keys move the marker horizontally along the rows. Pressing the Left key moves the marker to the square on the left, and pressing the Right key moves it to the square on the right. With each move, the game announces the current square’s name and status. Shoot Key Enter Key: This key is used to shoot at the square where the marker is currently located. When you press Enter, the game shoots at that square. If you have already shot at that square, the game will inform you that it has already been fired upon, and you cannot shoot at it again. Information Keys F1 Key: Pressing this key will cause the game to read out the game instructions. This includes an explanation of the game’s objective, how to move the marker, how to shoot, and important keys. I Key (uppercase): Pressing this key will announce the number of remaining ships for you and the number of remaining ships for the enemy. This information helps you know how close you are to victory.
