Summary

Adds PointPort: an MTK connector port on a PDE field at a point, declared on the PDESystem before discretization. After symbolic_discretize, the discretized System carries the ports as ordinary connector subsystems, so a PDE can be composed with lumped MTK components through connect. Ports support both read-out (across variable) and exchange of a conserved quantity (connect = Flow variable).

@named heater = PointPort(HeatPort; var = T(t, x), at = [x => 0.31], across = :T,
    through = :Q_flow => 1 / (ρ * c * A))            # select = Interpolate() by default
@named rod = PDESystem(eqs, bcs, domains, [t, x], [T(t, x)], ps; systems = [heater])
sys, tspan = symbolic_discretize(rod, MOLFiniteDifference([x => 0.01], t))
@named model = System([connect(sys.heater, contact.port_a), connect(contact.port_b, cap.port)], t;
    systems = [sys, contact, cap])
prob = ODEProblem(mtkcompile(model), nothing, tspan)

How it works

  • Selection. Each port picks grid nodes I and weights w_I per spatial direction and takes the tensor product, so it is dimension-agnostic. Options: Interpolate(p) (Lagrange, grown outward from the bracketing pair so it never extrapolates; default p = 1, non-negative weights) and Nearest(). Coordinates are mapped on s.grid, so edge-aligned ghost nodes and non-uniform grids are handled.
  • Across. One algebraic equation per port: port.T ~ Σ w_I T(t)[I], in elements of the array unknown.
  • Flow. scale * Q is spread back over the same nodes with density w_I / V_I (V_I the node control volume, wrapped across periodic seams). One weight table serves both directions, so the coupling is exactly conservative (Σ V_I q_I = scale * Q) and passive. The source is scaled by the coefficient of Dt(var) in the PDE, so it acts on Dt(var) however the PDE is written. Slice-form interior equations get the source as a literal array broadcast onto the slice; MOL never scalarizes for this.
  • Plumbing. PDEBase's handle_complex rebuilds the PDESystem without systems, so MOL overrides symbolic_discretize(::PDESystem, ::MOLDiscretization). Without ports it invokes the generic method unchanged. With ports it carries them on an internal ports field of MOLFiniteDifference (not a constructor keyword), injects sources in discretize_equation!, and rebuilds the System with the ports as subsystems.
  • discretize, DAEProblem, ODEFunction, ODEFunctionExpr and the StaggeredGrid discretize reject ported systems with a message showing the compose-then-compile recipe.

Composition on released ModelingToolkit

Nesting the discretized system inside another system works on released ModelingToolkitBase now that master spells slice broadcasts as a non-inlined mol_broadcast call (#717). Before that, mtkcompile of the enclosing system failed with matching non-exhaustive in renamespace (SymbolicUtils represents a slice such as T(t)[2:50] as an ArrayOp, which renamespace did not handle). SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133 and SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5296 fix that in ModelingToolkitBase for other producers of slice equations; this PR no longer depends on either, and its composition tests run unconditionally.

Tests

Group Released MTK, merged with master b4c1e87
Components (incl. PointPort node selection) all pass (PointPort node selection 55/55)
Connectors (new) 55/55
Diffusion 269/269
Discretization 3663 + 64
QA 21/21

The new Connectors group covers: the ported System's structure; equal effective source for the PDE written canonically, reversed, parameter-scaled and as 0 ~ …; a read-out port at top level; a parameter used only in scale; periodic ports at x = 0.99 and x = 0.005; a 2-D plate; composed solves of a 1-D rod with a capacitor (energy balance; initial heat flow of +100 W into the rod), the reversed-form PDE, an edge-aligned rod and periodic rods conserving to below 1e-8 at solver tolerance 1e-10, Nearest on a pointwise host, and a 2-D plate. Two regressions from review: a flow into T with Dt(T) + Dt(v) ~ …, Dt(v) - Dt(T) ~ … adds exactly the source to Dt(T) (on and off a node), exact coordinates on a stretched grid with nodes 1e-10 apart select the node they lie on, and a flow at or just inside a Dirichlet boundary on that grid is rejected. Negative tests cover discretize/DAEProblem rejection, algebraic variables, symbolic coordinates, non-connector constructors and bad across/through names.

Centre-aligned rods with Neumann ends show an energy residual of about 5e-5 that falls as O(dx³) under refinement: it comes from measuring energy with trapezoid volumes while the one-sided boundary stencils conserve a slightly different measure, not from the coupling (edge-aligned and periodic cases conserve to ~1e-11).

Limitations and follow-ups

  • Flux ports use interior nodes only; a flow point closer to a boundary than the first interior node is an error pointing to a flux BC. Boundary-face ports, whole-face (array) ports and ports embedded in BCs are not supported.
  • Not supported: stationary systems, StaggeredGrid, PseudospectralDiscretization.
  • Composed models go through mtkcompile + ODEProblem; DAEProblem of a composed model fails initialization. The PDESolution interface does not cover composed models; index namespaced unknowns (sol[sys.T]).
  • A flux port adds a grid-sized literal (mostly zeros) to the host slice equation; compile time was unchanged in a 81×81 test.
  • Follow-ups: PDEBase handle_complex (and MOL's transform_pde_system!) should forward systems/connector_type/metadata; Floor/Ceil/CellAverage selections; ports in the solution interface; array-preserving mtkcompile (CHECKPOINT: preserve array DEs through mtkcompile (ArrayEquationGroup / not skip-tearing) ModelingToolkit.jl#5102, MTKTearing: keep array differential equations intact through structural simplification JuliaComputing/StateSelection.jl#158), since mtkcompile of the composed model is per-element today; coupling separately discretized PDE blocks, and BC values driven by causal MTK signals.

Design notes and the investigation behind them are not part of this PR.

A PointPort declares, on the PDESystem, that a field value at given spatial
coordinates is an MTK connector port: the across variable equals a weighted
selection of grid nodes (Interpolate or Nearest, tensor product across
directions), and an optional Flow variable enters the PDE as a source spread
over the same nodes with weight w_I / V_I, so the coupling is conservative
and passive.

PDEBase.handle_complex rebuilds the PDESystem without its systems, so MOL
overrides symbolic_discretize, carries the ports on an internal
MOLFiniteDifference field, injects sources and across equations per PDE in
discretize_equation!, and rebuilds the System with the ports as subsystems.
Equations keep their slice form. Port-free systems take the generic path
unchanged. discretize, ODEFunction and ODEFunctionExpr reject ported systems.

Components: node selection (partition of unity, polynomial reproduction on
uniform and nonuniform grids, Nearest ties, exact hits, 2-D tensor product,
interior restriction, domain errors) and PointPort validation.

New Connectors group: source coefficients and conservation read from the
ported System, read-out ports at top level, a pointwise host with a
parameter used only in the scale, error paths, and an unchanged port-free
path. Nested composition with lumped components needs
SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133 and is @test_broken until it is available.

Address the red-cell review of the PointPort ports.

- The source is multiplied by the coefficient of Dt(var) in the PDE, so it
  adds scale * Q to Dt(var) however the PDE is written. A flow into a
  variable whose PDE lacks a linear Dt(var) with a constant or parameter
  coefficient is an ArgumentError (this also covers algebraic variables).
- A periodic direction wraps the stencil across the seam and gives the last
  node a full cell; an interface end gives it a full cell too.
- Interpolate grows its stencil outward from the bracketing pair, so it
  never extrapolates on stretched grids. The default is Interpolate(1),
  whose weights are non-negative; the approx_order sentinel is gone.
- Nearest breaks exact ties toward nodes inside the domain (edge-aligned
  ghosts).
- DAEProblem and the StaggeredGrid discretize reject ported systems.
- Symbolic coordinates in `at` are an ArgumentError.
- The slice-namespacing probe moves to the tests, its only user.

Effective source per node (-(dR/dQ) / (dR/dDt(u_I))) is the same for the PDE
written four ways; periodic seams conserve; stretched-grid Interpolate
brackets the point; edge-aligned ties pick the inside node; algebraic
variables, DAEProblem and symbolic coordinates are rejected. Under
SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133 the nested tests add the reversed PDE form
and edge-aligned and periodic rods conserving to 1e-8.

I reproduced the merge against current master at c88a3b2c212c3cd58240da6f0be59ec11ac876d8. The only conflict is the QA tuple: preserve both the branch's :isconnector entry and master's :scalarization_function entry.

In an isolated merge probe, git apply --check and git apply exited 0; the result matched the candidate resolved file byte for byte. Julia tests have not been run on the refreshed tree. This resolves only the merge conflict; public API usage and connector correctness still need independent review. Full nested composition also needs SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133.

Fresh independent review of c88a3b2c212c3cd58240da6f0be59ec11ac876d8: CHANGES, medium M1. Two numerical cases fail on latest and older supported dependencies.

1. Coupled time derivatives receive the wrong flow. The executed public symbolic_discretize model uses:

eqs = [
    Dt(T(t, x)) + Dt(v(t, x)) ~ 0.01Dx(Dx(T(t, x))),
    Dt(v(t, x)) - Dt(T(t, x)) ~ 0.01Dx(Dx(v(t, x))),
]
bcs = [T(0, x) ~ 300.0, v(0, x) ~ 300.0,
       Dx(T(t, 0)) ~ 0, Dx(T(t, 1)) ~ 0,
       Dx(v(t, 0)) ~ 0, Dx(v(t, 1)) ~ 0]
@named hmass = PointPort(HeatPort; var=T(t,x), at=[x=>0.5],
                        across=:T, through=:Q_flow=>1)

The domains are t∈[0,1], x∈[0,1], dx=0.1, with hmass supplied as a PDESystem subsystem. These equations meet the documented linear constant-coefficient restriction. Independently differentiating the assembled scalar residuals gives, in field order [v,T]:

A = [1 1; 1 -1]
b = [0, -10]
dx * (A \ b) = [-0.5000000000000001, 0.5000000000000001]
expected       [0.0,                  1.0]

The injection must account for the complete derivative matrix, or reject unsupported coupled time derivatives before returning a ported System. A coefficient from only the assigned equation does not establish the intended source. Please add this discriminating analytic regression.

2. An exact stretched-grid coordinate selects the wrong node. With grid [0,1e-10,2e-10,0.1,0.2,0.4,0.6,0.8,1], a PointPort(...; at=[x=>2e-10], select=Nearest()) and allowed indices 2:8 selects CartesianIndex(2) with weight1; the exact hit is CartesianIndex(3). The executed assertion fails. findfirst accepts the earlier node because its tolerance scales with the entire domain width. Honor exact hits first and use local spacing/coordinate precision for near hits and ties; include interpolation between closely spaced nodes. The formal two-regression testset fails2/2 with MTK11.42.0, MTKBase1.73.0, Symbolics7.39.2, SU4.46.4; latest probes reproduce both defects.

Two further blockers:

  • The new catch-all namespacing probe and @test_broken gate bypass composed solves on supported releases. Released dependencies run29passed/1broken, and forced composition throws matching non-exhaustive. Applying only the MTK5133 namespace condition to a scratch dependency makes Connectors48/48 and the independent analytic heat-exchange assertions pass. Integrate/release the prerequisite, set the compatible dependency range, and run composition assertions unconditionally. The supplied instructions prohibit adding these broken-test bypasses without explicit permission.
  • ModelingToolkitBase.isconnector is non-public and gets a new QA exemption. Runtime checks show has_connector_type and get_connector_type are both public. Its complete predicate is has_connector_type(sys) && get_connector_type(sys) !== nothing; compose those public owner accessors locally and remove the exemption, or first publish/document the upstream API. This is reducible.

The official Components run passes537 assertions with4 inherited broken; new selection tests pass50/50. Prerequisite-enabled analytic temperatures match at rtol1e-8. These passing cases do not cover the two numerical failures. No numerical repair was applied, so there is no passing-after claim. Full QA/docs/GPU, exact MTKBase1.72 runtime floor, and refreshed-master integration were not verified. The current head still conflicts in QA and has no CI checks. An exact node with Interpolate(20) also errors on nine interior nodes before checking the documented exact-hit shortcut; reconcile that contract. All five AI-authored commits omit Chris's required coauthor trailer.

Reviewer recorded provisional risk before the supplied body/old scripts. Historical ratings of the prerequisite became visible later, so this was not wholly blind to prerequisite history. The two regressions were independently executed; no author branch was changed.

- A port's flow now adds scale * Q to Dt(u) of the coupled system. Every PDE
  containing Dt(u) receives the source scaled by its own coefficient of Dt(u),
  so the residuals shift by A * e_u * src for the full time-derivative matrix A.
  Previously only the PDE assigned to u got it, which for
  Dt(T) + Dt(v) ~ ..., Dt(v) - Dt(T) ~ ... put [0.5, 0.5] into [Dt(v), Dt(T)]
  instead of [0, 1]. All PDEs use the nodes selected in the interior of u's PDE;
  a coupled PDE that does not host them, or lives on other spatial variables, is
  an ArgumentError, as is a flow into u when no PDE contains Dt(u).
- Exact node hits are judged against the local grid spacing rather than the
  domain width, so a stretched grid with nodes 1e-10 apart selects the node the
  coordinate lies on. Nearest ties use the local spacing too. An exact hit is
  checked before the stencil size, so Interpolate(p) on a node no longer errors
  when p + 1 exceeds the available nodes.
- Use ModelingToolkitBase's public has_connector_type/get_connector_type
  instead of the non-public isconnector, and drop its ExplicitImports exemption.
- Regression tests: the reviewer's coupled system (on-node and off-node), the
  1e-10 stretched grid, and Interpolate(20) on a node.

Master's slice broadcasts are now spelled as a non-inlined mol_broadcast call
(#717), so a discretized system nests inside another system on released
ModelingToolkitBase without SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133: after merging master
the gated composition test passed unexpectedly. Drop the namespacing probe and
its @test_broken gate so every composed solve runs, and drop the #5133
requirement from the docs and the PointPort docstring.

Connectors on released MTK: 51/51.

Response to the two automated review comments above, at head 6a6678f (no force-push; master merged as caeca47).

Merge with master b4c1e87 — merged in caeca47. The QA tuple ends up as master's (:scalarization_function, no :isconnector), because the branch no longer uses isconnector (see below).

1. Coupled time derivatives receive the wrong flow — confirmed and fixed in 8f01b4f. With the reviewer's system the source reached [Dt(v), Dt(T)] as [0.5, 0.5] / dx instead of [0, 1] / dx: only the PDE assigned to T received it. Now every PDE containing Dt(T) receives a_i * scale * Q * w_I / V_I, with a_i its own coefficient of Dt(T), so the residuals shift by A * e_T * src for the full time-derivative matrix A and the solved system gains exactly src in Dt(T). All PDEs use the nodes selected in the interior of T's PDE. A coupled PDE that does not host those nodes, or lives on other spatial variables, is an ArgumentError, as is a flow into a variable with no Dt in any PDE, or a non-constant coefficient. Regression test "Flow into a variable whose time derivative appears in several PDEs" builds the reviewer's system and checks dx * (A \ b) == [1, 0] in [T, v] order at x = 0.5, and the 0.7 / 0.3 split over nodes 6 and 7 at x = 0.53.

2. Exact stretched-grid coordinate selects the wrong node — confirmed and fixed in 8f01b4f. Exact hits are now judged against the local node spacing instead of the domain width, and Nearest ties use the local spacing too. On [0, 1e-10, 2e-10, 0.1, …, 1] with allowed nodes 2:8, x = 2e-10 selects node 3 for both Nearest() and Interpolate(1), x = 1.5e-10 interpolates 0.5 / 0.5 between nodes 2 and 3, and x = 1.4e-10 with Nearest() selects node 2 (test "Exact hits use the local spacing").

Interpolate(20) on an exact node — fixed in 8f01b4f: the exact-hit check now runs before the stencil-size check, so a coordinate on a node uses that node whatever the order (covered by the same test).

ModelingToolkitBase.isconnector is non-public — fixed in 8f01b4f: PointPort uses the public has_connector_type(sys) && get_connector_type(sys) !== nothing (public in ModelingToolkitBase 1.73 and 1.77.5), and the ExplicitImports exemption is gone.

Namespacing probe and @test_broken gate — removed in 6a6678f. After merging master, nested composition compiles on released ModelingToolkitBase: master now spells slice broadcasts as a non-inlined mol_broadcast call (#717), which avoids the renamespace path that SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5133 fixes. The gated test passed unexpectedly, so every composed solve now runs unconditionally, and the docs no longer list #5133 as a requirement.

Tests on this head, released ModelingToolkit 11.45.5 / ModelingToolkitBase 1.77.5:

Group Result
Components (incl. PointPort node selection 55/55) pass
Connectors 51/51
Diffusion 269/269
Discretization 3663 + 64
QA 21/21

Runic --check and typos are clean. Not verified here: the docs build, the downgrade environment at the ModelingToolkitBase 1.72 floor, and GPU.

Not changed: no Co-authored-by trailer for Chris was added; the commits carry the author's Agent-* trailers. That is left to the author.

Update for head 30676f83: the exact unchanged public reproducer below now passes, exit 0 / 1 assertion, after failing on 6a6678f1. Independent additional checks pass 56/56 public flow/readout/boundary/outside-domain/roundoff cases and 39/39 single-interior-node diagnostics. The reported numerical case is fixed on this head; broader whole-PR validation is continuing. The finding below preserves its failing-head evidence.

A separate documentation gate remains open on current head 30676f83: its completed docs job reaches HTML rendering, then fails HTMLSizeThresholdError for api/discretization.md: 209.3 KiB against a 200 KiB limit. The tested merge tree equals this head. The default-branch counterpart succeeds; the final complete comparison classifies the sole failed check as base-green. The raw log has no HTTP 429 diagnostics. The reference page combines public and private autodocs. A separate four-file page split preserving both blocks, the existing public URL/developer anchor and the size guard is under local before/after build validation; no build success is claimed yet.

Fresh review of head 6a6678f13319327edf697ab5e2e885fd9f0ac2b9: changes requested — boundary through-flow is accepted on a tightly stretched grid. The unchanged earlier coupled-derivative and exact-node regression assertions now pass on this head; this is a separate case.

With Dirichlet endpoints and grid [0, 1e-10, 2e-10, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1], a through-flow port at x=0 is outside the permitted interior nodes, which start at 1e-10. The public symbolic_discretize call nevertheless succeeds. The documented restriction requires an error and a flux boundary condition for this case.

The cause is the domain-width tolerance in port selection, reused for the allowed-interior bounds. Its value is about 1.49e-8 on this domain, much larger than the local 1e-10 spacing. The subsequent clamped bracket admits extrapolation. The local-spacing exact-hit correction does not change this bounds check.

The executed internal selection diagnostic chooses nodes 2 and 3 with weights [2.0, -1.0], matching the hand calculation at x=0 from nodes 1e-10 and 2e-10. This contradicts the documented nonnegative, non-extrapolating default linear interpolation. This diagnostic is separate from the public reproducer below; it is not a proposed public interface.

A separate executed diagnostic also extracted the coefficients from the assembled system returned by symbolic_discretize, using -(∂R/∂Q_flow)/(∂R/∂Dt(T[k])). Per unit positive through-flow, node 2 receives 2.0e10, node 3 receives -20.000000019999998, and nodes 4–8 receive zero. Multiplication by their control volumes gives [2.0, -1.0]. Its nonnegative-source assertion fails (true exit 1, zero passes/one failure); this verifies the negative source in the assembled equations, beyond node selection. This is coefficient evidence, not a trajectory or conservation-failure claim.

The boundary checks need a tolerance tied to the adjacent local spacing, or another rule that preserves the supported interior range on stretched grids. Please retain a regression at the actual boundary coordinate with Dirichlet endpoints, alongside the repaired exact-hit tests.

The checks that a coordinate lies in the domain and, for a flow, among the
interior nodes used a tolerance of sqrt(eps) times the domain width. On a grid
whose first cells are far smaller than that, such as
[0, 1e-10, 2e-10, 0.1, ..., 1] with Dirichlet ends, a flow at x = 0 passed the
interior check and was extrapolated from nodes 2 and 3 with weights [2, -1]
instead of being rejected with the flux boundary condition message. Both
bounds now use sqrt(eps) times the gap next to the relevant end node, matching
the exact-hit test, so no domain-scale tolerance remains in node selection.

Regression: flows at x = 0, 5e-11 and 1 on that grid with Dirichlet ends are
rejected; a flow on the first interior node is accepted.

Response to #726 (comment), at head 30676f8 (no force-push; master unchanged since the last merge, so no new merge).

Boundary through-flow accepted on a stretched grid — confirmed and fixed in 30676f8. On [0, 1e-10, 2e-10, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1] with Dirichlet ends, a flow at x = 0 passed the interior-node check and was extrapolated from nodes 2 and 3 with weights [2.0, -1.0], as the review reported. The domain check and the interior-node check both used sqrt(eps) * (domain width), about 1.5e-8 here. Both now use sqrt(eps) times the gap next to the relevant end node, the same local rule as the exact-hit test, so node selection no longer has a domain-scale tolerance anywhere.

On that grid, flows at x = 0, 5e-11 and 1 now raise the "flux boundary condition" error, a flow on the first interior node (1e-10) is accepted, and a rounded coordinate such as 0.1 + 0.2 on a node at 0.30000000000000004 is still an exact hit. The regression is in the Errors testset of test/Connectors/point_ports_heat.jl, with Dirichlet endpoints at the actual boundary coordinates, alongside the earlier exact-hit tests.

Tests on this head, released ModelingToolkit 11.45.5 / ModelingToolkitBase 1.77.5: Components pass (PointPort node selection 55/55), Connectors 55/55. The change touches only select_port_nodes_1d and the Connectors tests; Diffusion, Discretization and QA were green on 6a6678f and were not rerun locally. Runic --check and typos are clean.

An exact docs-only proposal for head 30676f83 splits the public and developer API references, retaining both @autodocs configurations, the public page path and the existing Developer API heading. It changes four documentation files (15 additions, 8 deletions); docs/make.jl, link checks and the 200 KiB size guard are unchanged.

The current-head hosted docs job reaches HTML rendering and fails with api/discretization.md at 209.3 KiB > 200 KiB; the default-branch comparison job succeeds. The checked merge tree equals this head.

This proposal is not verified to fix that size failure. I ran the unchanged full docs/make.jl on Julia 1.12.7 / Documenter 1.19.0 for both isolated sources, using matching 408-entry dependency graphs except for the MethodOfLines source path. Both corrected-origin runs exited 1 before rendering:

  • Unmodified head: 2,517 s; one GitHub source-link HTTP 429; makedocs encountered an error [:linkcheck] -- terminating build before rendering.
  • Proposal: 1,830 s; three GitHub source-link HTTP 429s; the same pre-render termination. Neither target HTML page exists, so there are no measured output sizes.

The true exits, raw-log hashes, source hashes and graph comparison were independently checked. Both autodocs blocks remain byte-identical; navigation and reference targets include the new page. Size, linkcheck and checkdocs settings are unchanged. A successful full render with both pages below the existing guard, followed by final-head CI/review, is still required. No author branch was pushed.

Independent review: Codex CLI 0.163.0 / gpt-6-astra, local session 01a15fd1-46dd-7f31-8138-647e21d99798 (no session URL), assessed the narrow source scope LOW risk / high source confidence, with CHANGES pending successful rendering. It found no source defect in the split, and made no claim about rendered sizes or anchors. This does not approve the whole PR.

The api/discretization page rendered at 199.95 KiB on master against
Documenter's 200 KiB size_threshold, so the PointPort docstrings pushed
it to 209.3 KiB and failed the Documentation build. The connector API
now has its own page, and the developer API moves to api/developer.md,
which leaves that page roughly 25 KiB under the limit. Every docstring
still appears exactly once.

The public Filter in the general API @autodocs block causes the QA failure on commit 307b65fe72320987443524049c19b90878c9cf99. The hosted QA run reports 20 pass / 1 fail in “public API is rendered in docs”; the corresponding default-branch QA job succeeds.

SciMLTesting’s documentation scanner deliberately treats any Filter as covering no public names, because it cannot determine arbitrary function behavior statically. The connector-specific block covers PointPort, Nearest, and Interpolate, leaving the other 14 public bindings uncovered by that QA contract. This result does not establish that their HTML is missing.

The following one-file candidate replaces the public Filter with a literal Pages allowlist, preserving the connector block, public/private scopes, size threshold, and QA assertions. Its SHA-256 is 48b5dcf21efd75e8ae388c7e5826b9c468d6bd51f2cc99763695e9d32596fbc3. I compared all 177 tracked files with this head: only this selection changes. Static attached-docstring checks cover all 14 legacy bindings and exclude the three connector bindings.

A separate reviewer (Codex CLI 0.163.0 / gpt-6-astra, local session 01a15fd1-46dd-7f31-8138-647e21d99798, no session URL) assessed this exact candidate **LOW risk / high source-review confidence**, with no source blocker. **Runtime validation remains pending:** actual 307 standard QA, the same QA with this patch, and a full docs build with the existing guards. There is no passing-QA, rendered-coverage, page-size, or anchor claim yet. Whole-PR numerical/public-API risk remains MEDIUM; this source assessment is not merge approval.

The delegated candidate writer’s child-specific harness/model/session metadata was unavailable and is recorded as unknown. I independently audited the frozen patch and source comparison; no author branch was pushed.

SciMLTesting's docs scanner cannot evaluate a Filter, so it counted the
general public block as rendering nothing and QA reported 14 public names
missing from the docs. A literal Pages allowlist excludes
interface/point_ports.jl in a way both Documenter and the scanner read.
QA passes 21/21 locally (20/1 before), and the API pages still render
each docstring once.

Both docs proposals and the QA finding are addressed at 7fc6df4, pushed without force.

Docs size. Master's api/discretization page already rendered at 199.95 KiB, against the 200 KiB limit. The PointPort docstrings pushed it to 209.3 KiB. I measured that moving only the connector docstrings removes about 7.7 KiB, which would still leave the page near 201.6 KiB. So the branch makes the same public/developer split as the patch proposed above, plus a separate connectors page:

  • api/discretization.md keeps the public API at the same URL, and still has the Developer API heading and anchor, which now point to the developer page.
  • api/connectors.md (new) holds the PointPort, Nearest and Interpolate docstrings and the port internals.
  • api/developer.md (new) holds the private API, with the port internals left out.
  • api/utils.md now links to developer.md, as in the proposed patch. My first push (2b9c5bd) broke that anchor; 307b65f restored it.

The size threshold, linkcheck and checkdocs settings are unchanged.

QA. This reproduces locally on 307b65f: QA reports 20 passed, 1 failed, with the same 14 public names unrendered. 7fc6df4 replaces the public block's Filter with a literal Pages allowlist of the eight source files that hold public docstrings, leaving out interface/point_ports.jl. With that change QA passes 21/21 locally on Julia 1.12.6 with SciMLTesting 2.13.3. The developer page still uses a Filter to exclude the port internals. That's allowed because the scanner only checks public names.

Rendering check. I built only the API pages with the docs environment on Julia 1.12.6 (linkcheck off, remotes off), which avoids the 429s. Each of the 194 docstrings renders once: 15 on the public page, 8 on the connectors page and 171 on the developer page, the same total as master. There were no duplicate-docs errors. The only unresolved link is a docstring already on master that @refs the pseudospectral page, which this trimmed build leaves out. Locally the developer page is 141.8 KB, against 170.9 KB for the unsplit page. Going by the CI page's 209.3 KiB, I estimate the developer page at about 175 KiB on CI. That is an estimate, not a measurement; the hosted Documentation run on 7fc6df4 will give the real number, and I'll add it here when it finishes.

Maintenance note: a new public docstring in a new source file needs adding to that Pages list. Otherwise the QA rendered-docs test fails, which flags the omission.

The hosted Documentation run on 7fc6df4 passes: https://github.com/SciML/MethodOfLines.jl/actions/runs/39692531940. The largest page is now api/developer, at 176.47 KiB against the 200 KiB limit, close to the ~175 KiB estimated above. No page is over the limit, and linkcheck passed. All 91 PR checks pass on this head, including QA.
