Every array-path broadcast is a mol_broadcast term, the @noinline wrapper for JuliaLang/julia#63872, so SymbolicUtils' opt-in fused broadcast codegen (the :fuse_broadcasts rewrite), which recognised only broadcast, fused nothing in a MethodOfLines residual. Declare SymbolicUtils.Code.is_elementwise_call(::typeof(mol_broadcast)), when SymbolicUtils defines that trait, so a mol_broadcast term fuses as the broadcast it wraps. The fused code materializes each region through SymbolicUtils' own @noinline fused_materialize!, so the inlining hang stays avoided. Without fusion, or with a SymbolicUtils that lacks the trait, the generated code is unchanged. staggered_groups now also returns, per group, update!(u, p, t, dt), which performs u[states] .+= dt .* dv without dv, or with lossy = true update!(u, p, t, dt, a, b) for u[states] .= a[states] .* u[states] .+ b[states] .* dv with per-state coefficient vectors laid out like u. f is unchanged. Each variable the group writes gets one in-place function over its grid, compiled with build_function_wrapper from an ArrayMaker whose regions are its equations' slices and whose values are u[r] + dt * f. It is called on reshape(view(u, block), dims), the variable's contiguous block of u, so no scatter remains, and since an ArrayMaker writes only its regions, constant and algebraic states keep their values. An ArrayMaker of at most 16 elements, which is generated element by element, is first given the variable itself everywhere. fuse_broadcasts (default true) and other keywords go to the code generation, so with SymbolicUtils' fused broadcast codegen each region is one fused materialize. The update reads u while writing it, so a group whose equation reads a state the group writes other than its own slice, compared by value, gets an update! that throws instead. Tests check update! against u[states] .+= dt .* dv from the group's f, bit for bit over the whole state, for the 1D wave, 1D Maxwell-Drude, 2D TM Yee, 2D TM with Drude and 3D Yee systems, the lossy form on both Drude systems, and the race check. Agent-Harness: Claude Code 2.1.302 Agent-Model: claude-opus-5-5 Agent-Session: 644ed0ff-c8c9-4cc3-b4c6-f326231a4030 Agent-Review: unreviewed Co-authored-by: Claude Code <agent@noreply.juliahub.com>
A group that passes the race check reads each state it writes only at the index it writes it, which is the contract of SymbolicUtils' fuse_unalias = false. Its per-variable functions are now generated with fuse_unalias = false and fuse_output_array set to the variable, so fused code neither copies its inputs on entry nor copies the region's own read of the variable, and on the CPU writes without Base's per-input unalias copies. A group that fails the check keeps the unaliasing, which copies its inputs on entry, when fused codegen is available, and throws otherwise, since unfused code writes region by region. With SymbolicUtils and Symbolics that lack the options, they are ignored. Agent-Harness: Claude Code 2.1.302 Agent-Model: claude-opus-5-5 Agent-Session: 644ed0ff-c8c9-4cc3-b4c6-f326231a4030 Agent-Review: unreviewed Co-authored-by: Claude Code <agent@noreply.juliahub.com>
A pointwise equation writes a scalar state u[i], and an ArrayMaker region needs an array value, so the update reads and writes u[i:i] instead. The periodic Maxwell-Drude test, whose E and J interiors are pointwise, now also checks update! bit for bit. Agent-Harness: Claude Code 2.1.302 Agent-Model: claude-opus-5-5 Agent-Session: 644ed0ff-c8c9-4cc3-b4c6-f326231a4030 Agent-Review: unreviewed Co-authored-by: Claude Code <agent@noreply.juliahub.com>
With fuse_unalias = false, SymbolicUtils no longer unaliases any input of a fused region, on the CPU or on GPU arrays, so reading the written slice through the destination view saves nothing: a fresh view of the same slice is not copied either. With and without fuse_output_array the update allocates nothing on the CPU, is bitwise equal to u[states] .+= dt .* dv, and makes no device copies on the GPU. The in-place update! is compiled from an ArrayMaker through ModelingToolkitBase's build_function_wrapper, eval_or_rgf, flat_unknowns and reorder_parameters, none of which their owners declare public. Two updater correctness failures reproduced at current head
Both failures occur for plain/lossy forms and both singleton-scalarization settings. The following is the exact executed diagnostic (it prints mismatches; its normal exit is not a test pass): using ModelingToolkit, MethodOfLines, Symbolics, SymbolicUtils, SciMLBase
using SymbolicIndexingInterface: variable_index

endPlease add updater-level regressions for both seam spellings, including the mixed released dependency resolution. The existing race-detector assertions and symmetric two-region examples do not catch these cases. No repair has been applied or tested in this read-only review; I have not pushed to this branch. A separate source/API finding: the new QA exclusions cover Additional matched-graph checks preserve this distinction: original723 and the local public-API consumer each match all four array-seam cases with staged Symbolics2103, and each mismatch all four with registered7.47. Scalar-seam cases mismatch all four combinations on both sources under both dependency graphs. Within each original/consumer pair, only the MethodOfLines source path differs; between staged/registered graphs, only Symbolics source/version and the project hash differ. These scripts print comparisons and their exit0 is not a passing test result. The release capability remains a separate blocker. The public-owner repair is now concrete: the documented ArrayMaker declaration is proposed in JuliaSymbolics/SymbolicUtils.jl#1169, and documented trailing generator arguments in SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5303. A separate consumer candidate removes the five exemptions and is undergoing focused/QA/broader tests and independent review. Its first review caught a compilation keyword precedence regression; the exact probe changes from8 passes/1 world-age error to32/32 after correction. This is an API migration result, not a repair of either ordering failure. Nothing has been pushed to this author branch. GPU execution remains unverified here. These are observed CPU correctness failures, independently of the outstanding GPU evidence. Links:

An exact public-owner patch is ready for original head47a05f84394e2d9684520e796e4c2860700b1111. It calls documented Review proposal with a docs-validation gap: two unchanged full builds failed only on external HTTP429 link checks. HTML rendering remains unverified; the patch is not a whole-PR merge recommendation. This requires the proposed public ArrayMaker in JuliaSymbolics/SymbolicUtils.jl#1169 and trailing-argument API in SciML/ModelingToolkit.jl#5303. Neither proposed owner version is released. Registered Symbolics7.47 lacks the fusion forwarding in JuliaSymbolics/Symbolics.jl#2103; no supported fusion version floor is inferred. Expanded official controls on an intermediate public-owner candidate produced306passes/4errors; the final official focused group passes381/381. The exact32-assertion compiler-option probe passes on original723, fails8passes/1world-age error on that intermediate candidate, and passes32/32 on the final patch. This discriminates the intermediate migration defect; it does not claim that original723 had that compiler-option defect. Fresh separate Codex CLI 0.163.0/gpt-6-astra independently repeated381+32 and rated this narrow patch low risk/high confidence, with no blocking findings. Final local groups:
Additional author-run Julia1.10.12 check on a freshly resolved staged owner graph: official Staggered_Codegen320+48=368 passed, exit0,453.04s ( Negative owner controls fail as intended: unextended ModelingToolkit37passes/71errors; pre-public SymbolicUtils332passes/1failure at the public ArrayMaker binding assertion. The patch does not depend on arbitrary unspecified ArrayMaker output regions or a private fusion-size threshold. Frozen source and setup cleanup were audited after all child processes ended: the live eight-file diff matches the exact patch and all1361 tracked files across the six source snapshots match their archived inputs. Setup overlays and generated assets were archived; ignored local validation manifests are outside this patch. Full initial regions can write preserved values; no strict no-store guarantee for constant/algebraic storage is established. The numerical follow-up clarifies that doc wording. The executed updater-ordering findings remain a separate numerical blocker, tracked in #723 (comment). The separate numerical-only correction is posted at #723 (comment), with completed CPU/floor evidence, measured copy costs, medium risk and the genuine external429 docs-rendering gap. Whole-stack GPU scalar-indexing, kernel/allocation behavior, custom array wrappers and parameter-array aliases remain unverified. The original PR still needs those adoption/release/GPU decisions. A separate numerical correction is available relative to the exact public-owner patch in #723 (comment). Numerical patch SHA256: Review proposal — full docs rendering remains blocked by the unchanged link checker; this does not approve the whole PR or its GPU performance path. Affected update groups read one full copy of their entry state across all owner kernels. Each subsequent group invocation receives a fresh entry state. The plain race-free path reads its state directly. Lossy updates copy both coefficient vectors before any write, preserving entry values even when coefficients alias the output. The patch also states the constant/algebraic guarantee in terms of unchanged values. Unfused overlapping updates still throw. The same complete official regression file, with identical tests before/after, gives:
Each before process exits1 and each after process exits0. The official tests cover Float32/64, n5/20, scalar/array periodic seams, partial nonperiodic regions, plain/lossy formulas, scalarization options, repeated alternating groups and offset storage with sentinels. The oracle evaluates the separate public group RHS from an independent entry-state copy. A separate Codex CLI 0.163.0/gpt-6-astra reviewer reran its unchanged independent2240-case oracle against this final source on each graph:2240/2240 each, including true stride-two state storage, a/b/both/shifted coefficient aliases, multiple owners and subsequent group entry. Its public-copy checks passed on Julia1.12.5 and1.13.1. An earlier candidate's nonpublic Base.mightalias usage was caught by official QA and removed; the final patch uses publiccopy. That earlier failure is preserved. Final-source official groups:
Final source/cleanup audit after all children ended:1361 immutable owner/original-snapshot files match exact inputs;166 candidate base files match except the approved consumer/numerical changes, with all nine approved file hashes verified. The numerical patch still matches the embedded diff byte-for-byte. Temporary JuliaProject overlays and generated asset Project/Manifest files were archived and removed, both doc manifest forms retained as ignored validation metadata, and the temporary Git remote configuration restored byte-for-byte. Both controller sessions are empty and the grant lock is free. The copy costs are substantial. CPU diagnostics at n64/1024/4096 with both float types and nonaliasing coefficients give24matching outputs per graph after versus12matches/12scalar-seam mismatches before. Those scripts exit0 by design; they are diagnostics, not passing-test claims. Selected n4096/Float64 measurements:
Both pointwise endpoints are numerically correct, so the roughly5× staged lossy allocation increase is a real cost on an already-correct nonaliasing path. The scalar-seam before endpoint is numerically incorrect and does not provide an equivalent-algorithm speed comparison. Sequential median after/before timing ratios span0.19–8.69; this establishes neither a speedup nor performance neutrality, and is not dismissed as noise. The independent reviewer verified all96 measurement rows,48 comparisons and raw log/source hashes. It retains medium risk, high confidence for the exercised CPU correctness/public API, with no blocking correctness finding. This is a correctness proposal with an explicit cost, not approval of the GPU performance path. GPU scalar-indexing, streams, device copy/kernel counts, parameter-array aliases and custom wrappers remain unverified. A lower-cost alias contract or backend implementation needs design if these copies are unacceptable. The whole PR and owner-release/fusion-floor requirements remain separate decisions for Chris and the author. Final source SHA256: Fresh final read-only publication audit (Codex CLI 0.163.0/gpt-6-astra, local session 01a15e87-0751-7390-8c8a-7663826ff12d, no session URL) verified the raw completed gates, exact prerequisite+patch application, cost arithmetic, genuine docs failure and final source/metadata cleanup. It found no evidence or wording blocker to this gated proposal. This does not change the separate medium numerical risk or approve the whole PR. A group whose equations read its own states at other elements, such as a periodic seam, raced with its in-place update!. Fused code generation's unaliasing covers only fused view regions, so a scalar seam region read the already written state, and released Symbolics does not pass the fusion options on at all, so there every overlap read written state. The periodic forward difference with total 210.0 stepped to 210.015625 either way. Now such a group's update! copies u on entry into a buffer allocated once when update! is built, and every kernel reads that copy. This holds with or without fusion, so the unfused ArgumentError goes away. Race-free groups, Yee's among them, still read u directly with no copy. The coefficients a and b are not copied: kernels read them only at the indices they write. The regression testset "Staggered updates read the complete group entry state" is ported verbatim from ChrisRackauckas-Claude's review of #723 (numerical patch sha256 4dca6a26). Each group from
staggered_groupsnow hasupdate!(u, p, t, dt), which steps the group in place. It writes each variable's new values straight into that variable's block ofu, so there is nodvbuffer, no gather or scatter, and one fused kernel per equation region. On the CPU,update!is bitwise equal tou[g.states] .+= dt .* dvand allocates nothing. For 2D TM Yee at 49,923 states it takes 33 µs for the E group and 20 µs for the H group, against 111 µs and 138 µs for today'sfplus scatter. On the GPU it makes no copies, takes 6 µs and 27 µs for the same groups, and agrees with the CPU to within 2 eps.Stacking. This PR is stacked on:
staggered_groups);mol_broadcast, cherry-picked here as its own commit); Its diff includes their commits until they merge. Its own changes are four commits, in
src/discretization/staggered_discretize.jlandtest/Wave_Eq_Staggered/staggered_groups.jl.Dependencies. The fused, copy-free code path needs two unreleased PRs:
ef3fcd2b: fused broadcast codegen, with the in-placefuse_unaliasoption, which skips per-input unaliasing on the CPU and on GPU arrays;1a302106, which passesfuse_broadcastsandfuse_unaliasthroughCodegenFunctionOptions.With the released versions those options are ignored.
update!is then generated unfused: it is still correct, and the tests below pass bitwise, but it allocates temporaries and launches one kernel per operation. CI on released dependencies therefore exercises only that fallback, not the fused path this PR is for.API
(; f, update!, states).fis unchanged.lossy = truethe call isupdate!(u, p, t, dt, a, b), which computesu[states] .= a[states] .* u[states] .+ b[states] .* dv. Hereaandbare per-state coefficient vectors laid out likeu, as in the lossy Yee form.fuse_broadcastsand any other keywords are passed to code generation; for example,scalarize_single_element_regions = falseis needed for GPU arrays.update!never writes constant states (Dt(c) ~ 0) or algebraic states (walls, Dirichlet and Neumann rows).A Yee leapfrog step is therefore
E.update!(u, p, t, dt); H.update!(u, p, t + dt / 2, dt).Implementation
ArrayMakerwhose regions are the slicesrof the variable's equationsD(u[r]) ~ f, and whose values areu[r] .+ dt .* f, ora[r] .* u[r] .+ b[r] .* f.build_function_wrappercompiles it, andupdate!calls it onreshape(view(u, block), dims). Each variable's states are one contiguous block ofu, which is asserted.materialize!of a lazy broadcast, written through a view of that block. Each region's value has the region's shape, so no reshaped views are involved.ArrayMakerwrites only its regions, so these keep their values. The one exception is anArrayMakerof 16 elements or fewer, which is generated element by element, uncovered elements included. Such a variable is first given an identity region covering all of it.fuse_unalias = false:unalias, on the CPU and on GPU arrays. All views into one state vector look aliased to Base and to CUDA.jl, so broadcast would otherwise copy every input.u[i], and each one becomes a one-element regionu[i:i].Race check
An in-place update reads
uwhile writing it._group_racefinds any equation that reads a state its group writes, other than the slice the equation itself writes. It compares slices by value, because two equal slices with differently typed ranges are notisequal. This is exactly the contract offuse_unalias = false: no region reads memory another region writes, except at the index it writes. The groups are a proper 2-colouring of the coupling graph, so a group never reads another variable of its own group. The only possible race is an equation reading its own variable at other cells. Yee, Drude J and G, and 3D Yee have none. In Drude, J reads J only at the cells it writes.
A group that fails the check keeps the default unaliasing, which copies its inputs on entry and is correct, when fused codegen is available. Without fused codegen its
update!throws, because unfused code writes region by region and a later region would read updated values.Tests
test/Wave_Eq_Staggered/staggered_groups.jlgains these checks for each system (1D wave, 1D Maxwell–Drude, periodic 1D Maxwell–Drude with pointwise E and J interiors, 2D TM Yee with PEC, 2D TM with Drude J and G and a constant permittivity field, and 3D Yee):update!equalsu[g.states] .+= dt .* dv, computed with the group's ownf, at a random state. The comparison covers the whole state vector, so constant and algebraic states are checked as untouched.update!is checked bitwise againstu[g.states] .= a[g.states] .* u[g.states] .+ b[g.states] .* dv.The checks are bitwise because Julia does not contract
a * b + cinto an FMA on the CPU, so the fused update performs the same operations in the same order asffollowed by the axpy. Results:
Wave_Eq_Staggeredpasses (305 passed and 5 broken as before, plus 59/59 in the groups set), andComponentsandDAEpass.ef3fcd2band Symbolics #2103 at1a302106: the groups set passes 59/59, also bitwise. Let SymbolicUtils fused codegen fuse mol_broadcast #722's own test set ("mol_broadcast terms fuse into one broadcast") passes 5/5 on the same versions. The test suite has no GPU group, so the GPU comparison is described below rather than added as a test.

|u|and|dt * dv|per element, with about 10% of elements differing bitwise. This is consistent with ptxas contracting multiply-add into FMA inside a fused kernel, so GPU checks should use a tolerance of a few eps relative to those terms, not bitwise equality.Kernel counts: as in the table above.
Device-to-device copies: 0 per call in every case. The GPU numbers were measured with #1161 at
d7d74295, withoutfuse_output_array. That generates the same code asef3fcd2b, whose later commits only add a docstring and remove that option. Withoutfuse_unalias = false, GPUArrays' broadcast copied every input view of another variable: 4–6 copies per call. Since CUDA.jl 6.4.2, every view into oneCuArrayshares itsdataidswith the destination.Host-to-device copy: the profiler shows one 8-byte pageable copy per call. It appears for a plain
u .+= 0.0as well, so it does not come from this code.Time per call (minimum of 50), against 28–92 µs while the copies were made:

staggered_groups, Neumann rows and time-dependent Dirichlet rows get no update.CI fixes (47a05f8). Rebased onto #721's and #717's fixes. The
update!codegen's non-public accesses (ArrayMaker,build_function_wrapper,eval_or_rgf,flat_unknowns,reorder_parameters) are on the QA ignore list. Locally, QA passes 21/21; Wave_Eq_Staggered passes (59/59 groups) at the latest versions and at the downgraded lower bounds; Discretization passes at the lower bounds (3,660 + 56).🤖 Posted by an AI agent · harness: Claude Code 2.1.302 · model: claude-opus-5-5
