In `@controller/src/runtime/crowdsec.rs`:

before calling runtime.prepare_provider, and handle preparation errors so a
newly signalled managed supervisor is stopped when preparation fails. Also call
rollback_managed_start before returning either ApplyFailed result from the
target_json render-failure paths, preserving the previous runtime whenever
preparation or rendering fails.
In `@docker/crowdsec/runtime/supervisor.sh`:
- Around line 195-213: In the managed engine supervision loop, reset the restart
budget after a stable ready period rather than accumulating crashes across the
container’s lifetime. Track when the engine enters the ready state after
write_status and, after it exits, clear restarts if it remained ready for the
chosen fixed stability interval before incrementing the restart count; keep the
desired-mode change path unchanged.
- Around line 28-32: Update write_status, generate_bouncer_key, and
rotate_bouncer_key to create temporary files in root-owned staging directories
rather than directories writable by lower-privileged users; ensure each staging
directory is on the same filesystem as its destination. Keep permission changes
on those protected temporary files, and use a non-dereferencing target
replacement such as mv -T when installing them. Initialize the staging
directories in initialize_layout.
In `@docker/production/entrypoint.sh`:
- Around line 119-126: Recreate the CrowdSec control directory on each startup
by removing the existing directory before the `install -d` call for
`crowdsec_control_directory`. Keep the existing ownership and permissions, then
initialize `desired-mode` in the newly created directory.
In `@tests/production/proxy-smoke.ts`:
- Around line 943-961: Update the fake LAPI decision handlers to record the
provider they serve, then reset that record before switching configuration in
the CrowdSec smoke test. Before sending the spoofed request, use the existing
waitFor helper to wait until the recorded provider is trusted, ensuring Caddy
has fetched the trusted decisions.
In `@web/src/language/Locales/de.json`:
- Line 1835: Update the German description for the existing Local API endpoint
to state that the Bouncer key is no longer displayed after saving, matching the
credential-storage behavior described in the other locales.
In `@web/src/server/Admin/CrowdSec/crowdsec.service.ts`:
- Around line 68-95: Update controllerResponseMatches and
reconcileCrowdSecConfiguration so reconciliation compares configuration, not
health: remove the connected-state requirement while retaining mode,
enforcement, credentials, and API URL checks. Make hasDrift reuse the same
configuration-matching logic against getCrowdSecRuntimeStatus; leave health
evaluation to runtimeMatches for synchronization and status reporting.

Reachability: Internal
Exploitability: Difficult
CWE: CWE-59
Root follows attacker-replaceable temp paths in lower-privileged directories.
The supervisor runs as root. write_status creates its temp file in $control_directory. The entrypoint creates that directory as 0700 rentnerproxy:rentnerproxy. The script then calls chown and chmod on the temp path by name. Between mktemp and chown, any rentnerproxy process can rename a symlink over .status.XXXXXX. Caddy and the controller both run as rentnerproxy. Root then sets the symlink target to root:rentnerproxy 0440. For example, rentnerproxy could then read /etc/shadow. chown dereferences its operand by default and chmod always follows symlinks. protected_symlinks does not protect a non-sticky 0700 directory. The loop calls write_status once per second in stopped mode, so an attacker gets a new race window every second.
The bouncer-key path has the same defect. generate_bouncer_key and rotate_bouncer_key create the temp file in $credentials_directory, which the crowdsec user owns. The crowdsec engine parses attacker-influenced logs. If that process is compromised, it can win the same race.
Create and set permissions on every temp file inside a root-owned directory. Then rename the file into place with mv -T, so a symlink or directory at the target is replaced or rejected, not followed.

It must be on the same filesystem as $control_directory. The bouncer directory is only safe if its parent is also root-owned. The entrypoint comment covers that parent.

Do not treat health state as configuration drift.
hasDrift and controllerResponseMatches reject an active managed or external provider when its state is not connected. The drift check runs every 60 seconds, then the worker retries failed reconciliations with delays up to 60 seconds. This can cause repeated controller calls during transient degraded or starting states and can return pending even when the configuration matches.
Keep health in runtimeMatches for synchronized and status reporting. Use configuration equality for reconciliation:

🤖 Completed: Fix CodeRabbit issues in PR #136 — View commit |
Reset restart budgets after stable runs, wait for trusted decisions in smoke tests, and clarify German bouncer-key text.
Closes #64.
Summary
Add first-class CrowdSec protection with Disabled, Managed by RentnerProxy, and External CrowdSec modes. Disabled remains the default for fresh installs and Alpha 6 upgrades.
Architecture
Web/PostgreSQL stores desired state; the Rust controller validates and applies it; typed Caddy JSON enforces decisions. Managed CrowdSec runs inside the existing single-container appliance as an unprivileged user, with state in the existing volume. No extra Compose service or volume is introduced.
CrowdSec integration
The pinned Caddy HTTP bouncer serves both managed and external modes. Managed mode bundles a pinned CrowdSec engine and Caddy collection, loopback Local API, supervised lifecycle, access-log acquisition, and internal bouncer-key rotation. External mode uses an operator-supplied Local API. AppSec and Layer 4 are excluded. Supply chain: CrowdSec v1.8.1 uses the pinned official image digest ab1bdb61a072154d478ad6c625b8e62c7f79a727b2740209d2128dd51d69d58d; the official Caddy hub snapshot is 435f7d81caf247241bd6068f0a778bafa8dfe975 with per-file SHA-256 verification. The community Caddy bouncer v0.14.1 is pinned to commit 6b35f6be25e457aa0b94e32c6ae519123e50e7b7 and source SHA-256, then trimmed to its HTTP module. MIT (engine/hub) and Apache-2.0 (bouncer) notices ship in the image; Gitleaks, dependency review, Bun audit, CodeQL, and production module checks run in CI.
Security
External keys are encrypted at rest, redacted from responses and logs, and write-only after saving. A saved key can be reused only for the exact stored endpoint; changing the endpoint requires a new key. Managed credentials use narrow file permissions. The CrowdSec group can traverse only the proxy state root and read only its logs child; certificates and other state remain private. External credential replacement writes a secret-free rotate event to the administration audit log; managed activation logs rotation without the key. Mode changes validate the target before replacing the active configuration and restore the previous runtime on failed activation or persistence.
Trusted proxy / client IP behavior
The bouncer evaluates Caddy's resolved client IP. By default, forwarded headers are untrusted. Explicit canonical trusted-proxy CIDRs allow only configured direct peers to supply a forwarded client address. Smokes cover forged X-Forwarded-For and X-Real-IP, trusted IPv4/IPv6, and untrusted peers.
Failure behavior
Local API outages are fail-open for traffic availability and reported as Degraded; they cannot guarantee blocking while decisions are unavailable. The managed supervisor has a bounded restart budget. Failed mode transitions retain the last verified provider.
Configuration
Security → CrowdSec exposes the three modes, runtime health, and an external endpoint/key form with a connection test. Managed mode needs no additional public port, Docker socket, mandatory user environment variable, service, or volume.
Tests
Current head d3192e5: all 20 PR checks pass, including PostgreSQL-backed Web tests, Format, Lint, Typecheck, Build, Rust, Fuzz, CodeQL, Gitleaks, Dependency Review, and Bun Audit. Production Smokes pass on the same SHA: appliance 45 checks, proxy runtime 45, Certificates/ACME 51, and Upstream TLS 11. The first CI attempt had a transient Pebble DNS-01 renewal failure after restart; the full retry passed without a code change. Local verification: 182 Rust tests, 23 fuzz tests, 26 focused CrowdSec tests, typecheck, lint, Web build, changed-file formatting, shell syntax, and diff check pass. The full local format check is distorted by Windows CRLF checkout on untouched files; Linux CI Format passes.
Deployment impact
The production image adds pinned CrowdSec binaries, hub data, and the pinned Caddy HTTP bouncer; installations remain Disabled until explicitly enabled. The current v3 repository backup does not yet include managed CrowdSec state; #71 tracks complete backup/restore compatibility. Preserve the existing appliance volume or a volume-level snapshot if managed history must survive disaster recovery.
Screenshots
No screenshot is attached for the authenticated security page. Component tests cover read-only and editable states, connection testing, and external-provider saving.
