These are the initial "spike" implementations for #277. As well as the initial design doc for creating the spike.

I instructed Claude to build the smallest, simplest possible implementation and limited what it was allowed to import from deployments/api. We added a baseline/verification script to confirm parity with the existing filter options calls and compare latency and performance. The idea was to create a loop (implement -> verify -> shorten/simplify) that could be repeated quickly an was easy for me to audit.

This proved really helpful in constraining the overall scope of what the agent did.

For example

  • It repeatedly noted that the /filter-options endpoint wasn't protected by RESOURCE_READ permission and wanted to add it or comment. Fine candidate for a ticket, and though it was a small change, it simply wasn't necessary for this PR.
  • In an effort to shrink the SQL query for option fetching, it discovered there was no check on the db that enforces the invariant that memberships for a resource where repointed_id is NOT null MUST NOT have an ACTIVE status (i.e. merged resources cannot have ACTIVE memberships).
    • Kept that out of the PR and drafted a follow-up ticket
    • Allowed the query to avoid joining the resources table entirely

Notes:

  • The design doc (and pretty much all other documentation IMO) needs a LOT more human oversight & input. I recently found this post that had a lot of solid guidance. Even so, the doc is too long and convoluted.
  • Claude Code REALLY wanted to reuse patterns we already have regardless of whether the design, architecture, or interactions those patterns create is sensible or not.
  • This "spike" idea did seem to make things better. I'm working on a reusable skill that might help codify the overall workflow
