Explanation

The change is related to #18, but it does not meet the required property coverage. The tests generate arbitrary text, not valid generated code or Unicode identifiers. test_empty_input requires at least one character, so it does not test empty input. test_deeply_nested_ast passes nested lists, not AST/code inputs. test_tautology_variants builds formulas from arbitrary text and only checks that the result is a boolean. The assertions do not verify validator behavior and provide no evidence that a hand-written mutant is killed. The new file also imports hypothesis, while the project dependency metadata declares no test dependency; the available evidence does not establish that python -m pytest -q installs it.

Resolution

Add generated valid and boundary code inputs, including a true empty input, valid deeply nested AST/code cases, Unicode identifiers, and syntactically distinct P -> P forms. Assert the expected validator result or invariant for each case. Add a test or documented mutation check that fails for at least one hand-written mutant. Declare Hypothesis as a test-only dependency or use a hand-rolled generator, and verify the full suite with python -m pytest -q.

Declare and install Hypothesis for tests.

fable_v2/tests/test_proof_engine.py imports hypothesis during collection, but the project declares no test dependency and the documented setup installs only the editable package and pytest. A clean environment can therefore fail with ModuleNotFoundError. Add Hypothesis to a test dependency group, then install that group in CI and the documented test setup, for example with pip install -e ".[test]" pytest.

Run fable_v2/tests/test_proof_engine.py in CI.

The test matrix runs python run_tests.py --suite-only. The runner discovers only tests with unittest discover -s tests -p test_*.py, so it does not reach fable_v2/tests/test_proof_engine.py. No other CI workflow invokes this module. These property tests therefore provide no CI regression coverage. Extend the test command or discovery path to include this module, or move it into tests.

Call the exposed validator API. The added tests import fable_v2.proof_engine as pe, but that module does not expose validate_invariants. Its validator is DeterministicProofValidator.validate_invariant, which requires name, formal_statement, and proof_or_rationale. Each test therefore raises AttributeError before reaching its assertion. Adapt the tests to instantiate DeterministicProofValidator and provide the required arguments, or use the intended public validation entry point.

Exercise the empty string in test_empty_input.

min_size=1 excludes "". All other string strategies in this module also require at least one character, so no reachable case exercises the empty string. Set min_size=0 or add an explicit "" example.

Hi @nazasnow - thank you for picking up #18, and welcome as the first outside contributor to Fable Mode! Property-based tests for the proof validator are exactly what that issue wants. A few things to fix before we can merge:

 1. The suite runs via python run_tests.py --suite-only (unittest discover over the root tests/ directory), so please move the file to tests/ and wrap the tests in a unittest.TestCase - as placed, they aren't collected and never run in CI.
 2. fable_v2.proof_engine has no validate_invariants function - the validator is the DeterministicProofValidator class (validate_invariant, check_anti_tautology, is_tautological, validate_ast). Please target that API.
 3. Please declare hypothesis as a test-only dependency and install it in CI.
 4. test_deeply_nested_ast passes a list where a string is expected, and test_empty_input never generates empty input (min_size=1).
 5. The issue asks for tests that kill at least one hand-written mutant - please assert real properties instead of only checking the return type.

Happy to answer questions about the validator API. Looking forward to the next revision!
