What changes

Xide still assumed Visual X#: sources ending in .vxs, a vxs driver with check -File, and the old diagnostic side channel.

  • Extension: sources end in .tala; scratch documents and the save dialog use it.
  • Compiler: the client starts talac [--entry=<class>] --emit=metadata -- <source> instead of vxs check -File <source>.
  • Entry: Xide names the first class of the file with a Main method, written with the namespace of the file. A file without one is checked without an entry, which the compiler accepts for a check of one source.
  • Check record: an accepted check leaves <source name>.talameta beside the source. The client removes a record its own request caused and leaves one that was already there.
  • Diagnostics: the side channel is TALA_DIAGNOSTICS_FILE; documents begin with TADG.
  • Names: TalaTokenizer, TalaParser, TalaPsi, TalaCompilerClient, SourceLanguage.TALA, PsiLanguage.TALA; README, issue templates and the installation command name Tala and its tools.

The tokenizer and the structural parser already followed the syntax of the language (-- comments, \=, no decrement) and are only renamed.

Depends on

The command line used here is the one of Progmasoft/tala#70. Against a compiler before that change the check fails to start; nothing else in Xide depends on the compiler.

Verification

  • gradlew check passes, including new tests for the command line, the entry rule, the check record and the entry derivation.
  • Against the compiler built from Give every program one job and a GNU command line tala#70: an accepted source produced a TADG document and a .talameta; a source with a type error produced a TADG document with TAT0002 and no record.

Not in this change

  • branding/Xide-Social-Preview.svg is unchanged: its lettering is outlined and still draws "Visual X# IDE", so the artwork has to be redrawn, and the social preview image uploaded to GitHub replaced, separately.
  • A class whose Main is not public, static and parameterless is still chosen as the entry; the compiler's diagnostic explains it.

Self-review: read the whole diff; the mechanical rename was checked for the three spellings of the wire magic and for places where the old word meant the driver rather than the language.

Xide still spoke to a compiler that no longer exists under that name
and looked for sources with an extension the language no longer uses.

- Sources end in `.tala`; scratch documents and the save dialog use it.
- The compiler is `talac`. A check is
  `talac --entry=<class> --emit=metadata -- <source>` instead of
`vxs check -File <source>`. The compiler checks a source as a program,
so the request carries its entry: the first class of the file with a
`Main` method, written with the namespace of the file. A file without
one says so instead of starting the compiler.
- An accepted check leaves `<source name>.talameta` beside the source.
The client removes a record its own request caused and leaves one that
  was already there.
- The diagnostic side channel is TALA_DIAGNOSTICS_FILE and its documents
  begin with the magic `TADG`.
- Types, files and labels carry the new name: TalaTokenizer, TalaParser,
  TalaPsi, TalaCompilerClient, SourceLanguage.TALA, PsiLanguage.TALA.
- The README, the issue templates and the installation command
(`tazel install --global`) name Tala and its tools.

The tokenizer and the structural parser already followed the syntax of
the language and are only renamed.
The lettering of the artwork is outlined, so it still draws the old
name. The rename changed only the title and the description of the
file, which then described lettering the image does not show. They
say again what is drawn until the artwork itself is redrawn.
The compiler now checks one source without an entry, so Xide no longer
refuses a file of helpers. A request names the entry when the file has
a class with `Main` and leaves it out otherwise.
