Summary

Closes #35.
This PR stacks on #33.

Explicit spawn state

  • The process handle of a spawn carries its rollback.
Until the main thread runs, dropping the handle terminates the process.
A transaction, a SuspendedChild, and a Child own their parts directly, so resume and the commits need no Option and no expect.
A running spawn commits by resuming a SuspendedChild, so both commits share one resume.
  • The creation splits into functions for the standard I/O, the private Job, the Job list, the working directory, and the attribute list.
  • Each handle names its object type: a process, a thread, a Job, a pipe end, a standard stream, or a handle the caller supplied.
Each wrapper in sys takes the type its Win32 call needs.
  • Handle values carry the table they belong to, so a value of the creator's table can't join the handles that an alternate parent's child inherits.
  • AttributeList<'a> borrows the values its attributes point to.
The compiler now keeps them alive until DeleteProcThreadAttributeList runs, which a SAFETY comment only asked for before.

The lint registry loses its expect_used and too_many_lines exceptions for src/child.rs and src/transaction.rs.
The public API loses only the Drop impl of SuspendedChild, and dropping one still terminates its process through its process handle.

The gates

  • cargo xtask gates refuses a trait object in every file, except what source returns in an implementation of Error.
  • In library code it also refuses shared ownership, cell types, locks, atomics, static items, one-time initialization, thread_local, runtime reflection, and hash-based maps and sets.
Items, statements, and fields under cfg(test) or cfg(kani), and src/failure_tests.rs, keep their thread-local state, counters, and downcasts.
  • deny.toml bans the crates that refactor!: enforce spawn invariants mechanically #14 banned, which erase errors, erase serialization or futures, register items at run time, or keep implicit global state.
  • ADR 0016 records these decisions and credits the ADR 0009 of refactor!: enforce spawn invariants mechanically #14.

Validation

On Windows 11, x64:

  • cargo xtask test passed 73 unit tests, 36 integration tests, 36 xtask tests, and 16 doctests.
A new unit test shows that a dropped handle ends a process that never ran, and leaves a started one running.
  • cargo xtask verifier ran 111 test processes under appverif.exe, each clean but the 3 that misuse a handle on purpose and stopped.
  • rust-mutants why-skipped skips four configured places, as it does on feat!: design the 0.2 API and prove the spawn decisions #33, once the skips name the lines the split moved.

On macOS, Apple silicon:

  • Formatting, cargo xtask gates, and the xtask tests passed, including the new scanner tests.
  • Clippy passed for the host, for x64, i686, and ARM64 Windows, and for x64 Windows with the vector cfg.
  • The Rust 1.75 check for x64 and i686 Windows passed, and so did rustdoc with warnings denied.
  • cargo xtask public-api matched the updated snapshot.
  • reuse lint, typos, and cargo deny check bans licenses sources passed.

The owner has paused CodeRabbit, so its review of this PR waits for the owner to resume it.

Checklist

  • The relevant local tests ran.
  • Deterministic tests cover each behavior change.
  • The docs state each new or changed ownership, safety, or cleanup contract.
  • The public API snapshot holds the one change, the removed Drop impl of SuspendedChild.
  • The PR holds no secrets or public vulnerability details.
  • The PR stays focused and updates the relevant documentation.

Why

Spawn transactions, suspended children, and Win32 handles did not express ownership or handle type in their types.
This allowed invalid states and handle/table mismatches that relied on runtime checks.

Changes

  • Make processes, threads, Jobs, pipes, streams, and transferred handle values type-specific.
  • Store rollback behavior on the process handle, and let transactions and suspended children directly own their resources.
  • Split process creation into resource-specific preparation functions.
  • Bind attribute-list values to the attribute list lifetime.
  • Add cargo xtask gates checks for trait objects and disallowed library patterns, and add dependency bans.
  • Record the ownership and gate rules in ADR 0016.
  • Remove SuspendedChild’s Drop implementation; dropping it still terminates an unstarted process through the process handle.
  • Update the public API snapshot to reflect this compatibility change.

Validation

The PR reports 73 unit tests, 36 integration tests, 36 xtask tests, and 16 doctests passing on Windows 11 x64.
The PR reports that cargo xtask verifier ran 111 test processes, including three intentional handle-misuse cases that stopped.
The PR reports passing formatting, gates, xtask tests, Clippy, Rust 1.75 checks, rustdoc with warnings denied, the public API snapshot, lint checks, and dependency checks on macOS Apple silicon.

📝 Walkthrough

Windows spawn handling now uses typed handle resources and table-bound handle values. Spawn transactions and suspended children own process resources directly. Repository gates and ADRs record and check related state and type constraints.

Changes: Typed spawn state and enforcement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Typed handle resources and Win32 boundaries
src/resource.rs, src/lib.rs, src/sys.rs
Added typed owned and borrowed handles, creator- and inheritor-owned values, and Win32 wrappers that use these types. Attribute-list inputs now carry lifetimes tied to their backing values.
Typed handles in command and handle wrappers
src/handles.rs, src/command.rs, src/failure_tests.rs
Stdio, parent-process, job, command, and failure-test paths now use typed handle resources.
Child ownership and suspended-process lifecycle
src/child.rs, public-api/windows-spawn.txt
Child operations use typed handles. Dropping an unstarted process terminates it; resuming a suspended child marks it started and returns the owned child. The API listing no longer includes SuspendedChild’s Drop implementation.
Spawn transaction preparation and commit
src/transaction.rs, .rust-mutants.toml, docs/adr/0007-spawn-transaction.md
The transaction owns a Child and main-thread handle, delegates resource preparation to helpers, and uses typed handle-table values for transfers. Running and suspended commits transfer ownership through the child lifecycle. Mutation entries and the ADR status were updated.
Repository rules and recorded constraints
xtask/src/gates.rs, deny.toml, docs/adr/0013-repository-laws-are-enforced-mechanically.md, docs/adr/0016-spawn-state-is-explicit-and-typed.md
The scanner adds trait-object and library-identifier checks with test-only exceptions. The crate denylist and ADRs record the related rules and ownership changes.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0b299

The typed-handle refactor shows no concrete runtime defect in the supplied evidence. One known edge case remains in the new gate scanner, where a test-only guarded let statement with a block initializer can be flagged by mistake. This affects only the repository check, not shipped behavior.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0b299

The inspected changes strengthen resource ownership without showing a new privilege or reachability expansion. Failed spawn and resume paths retain rollback, and process-tree queries retain membership checks. Risk remains low rather than minimal because security coverage is incomplete and Windows failure and concurrency behavior was not exercised.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected capability-transfer exposure remains the configured child, any owned process tree, and selected duplicate handles placed in an alternate parent's table. Remote duplication still preserves source access rights rather than granting additional rights; the same protocol exists at the base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Kind and handle-table markers constrain internal syscall arguments and attribute composition. They do not independently validate arbitrary handle provenance: adoption still relies on creation or validation by the owning code. The public alternate-parent handle constructor retains a process-handle validation step before typed adoption.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Destructor cleanup remains best-effort: process rollback discards termination errors, and remote-handle Drop discards reclamation errors. Explicit remote close reports failure, and transaction construction propagates release failures. These limitations predate this PR; the inspected refactor does not establish stronger OS-level cleanup guarantees.

P4suta force-pushed the refactor/explicit-spawn-state branch from bf32985 to 4ad3e7c Compare October 13, 2026 14:10
A suspended child and an uncommitted transaction kept their process in an `Option` that `resume` and the commits took out with an `expect`.
The process handle now terminates a process that never ran when it drops, so each of them owns its parts directly.
A running spawn commits by resuming a `SuspendedChild`, so both commits share one resume.
The creation splits into functions for the standard I/O, the private Job, the Job list, the working directory, and the attribute list.

Each handle names its object type, and each `sys` wrapper takes the type its call needs.
Handle values carry the table they belong to, so a value of the creator's table can't join the handles that an alternate parent's child inherits.
`AttributeList` borrows the values its attributes point to, so the compiler keeps them alive until `DeleteProcThreadAttributeList` runs.

The lint registry drops the `expect_used` and `too_many_lines` exceptions of `src/child.rs` and `src/transaction.rs`.
The public API loses only the `Drop` impl of `SuspendedChild`, whose process handle now ends the process.

Refs #35
`cargo xtask gates` refuses a trait object outside the signature of `Error::source`, in every file.
In library code it also refuses shared ownership, cell types, locks, atomics, `static` items, one-time initialization, `thread_local`, runtime reflection, and hash-based maps and sets.
Items under `cfg(test)` or `cfg(kani)`, and `src/failure_tests.rs`, keep their thread-local state, counters, and downcasts.
Scanner tests cover each rule with refused and accepted code.

`deny.toml` bans the crates that PR #14 banned, which erase errors, erase serialization or futures, register items at run time, or keep implicit global state.
ADR 0016 records these rules and the explicit spawn state, and credits the ADR 0009 of #14.

Refs #35
Splitting the creation moved the `?` that only an interior NUL in the working directory reaches, which validation rejects first.
The mutation skip now names its new line, so the configuration skips four places again, as it did before the split.

Refs #35
The trait-object rule exempted any `dyn Error` in the signature of a function named `source`, parameters included.
It now exempts only what `source` returns in an implementation of `Error`.

A guarded `let` statement whose initializer ends with a brace, such as a struct literal followed by a method call, now stays guarded through its `;`.
A closing brace ends the guarded item only when no `else`, method call, `?`, `;`, or `,` continues it.
A test-only `cfg` that ends its list with a comma, which Rust accepts, now counts as test-only, while an empty member inside the list still doesn't.

ADR 0016 states the narrowed exception, and that the registry lost its exceptions for `src/child.rs` and `src/transaction.rs`, not every exception.

Refs #35
A Windows Server 2022 run showed the Job still listing the child for a moment after the wait for it returned.
The comment on `job_process_ids` claimed that a process leaves the list before its handle signals.
It now states what holds: an empty list means that no process of the Job still runs.

@coderabbitai Commit 004adb9 addresses each of the four review threads, and the head 0b29984 carries it:

  • ADR 0016 now limits the removed expect_used and too_many_lines exceptions to src/child.rs and src/transaction.rs.
  • in_error_source exempts a dyn Error only after the -> of source in an impl … Error for … block, and the scanner tests refuse a parameter, another method, and another trait.
  • item_end keeps a guarded let statement marked through its ; when else, a method call, ?, ;, or , follows the closing brace.
  • is_test_only_cfg drops one trailing comma from the predicate and from the any list, and still refuses an empty member such as any(test,,kani).

The Linked Issues check failed because #35 said that the public API doesn't change.
Issue #35 now records the one change: the public API loses impl Drop for SuspendedChild, whose private process handle now terminates a process that never ran.
Please verify the fixes, resolve the four threads, and check the linked issues again with the updated #35.

@P4suta I verified that 004adb9 is included in head 0b29984.

Three fixes are complete:

  • ADR 0016 limits the exception claim to src/child.rs and src/transaction.rs.
  • in_error_source checks the return position and the enclosing Error implementation.
  • is_test_only_cfg accepts trailing commas and rejects empty interior members.

The guarded-let fix is incomplete. The original example still fails:

#[cfg(test)]
let value = { 1 } + Arc::strong_count(&arc);

continues does not recognize +. Therefore, item_end still stops at the first } and leaves Arc outside the test-only guard. A guarded let must remain marked through its terminating semicolon, including operator continuations. Please fix this case and add a regression test.

Thread resolution failed. GitHub rejected the first resolution request with Resource not accessible by integration. No threads were resolved by that attempt. Please resolve the three verified threads manually and leave the guarded-let thread open.

The updated #35 removes the reported compatibility conflict. It now explicitly permits removal of impl Drop for SuspendedChild. The private ProcessHandle::drop retains the termination attempt for an unstarted process. The displayed Linked Issues failure uses the previous requirement. The review request below will request a refresh against the updated issue.

All reported CI checks passed. I inspected the code and regression tests; I did not run repository code.

Thanks for clarifying the compatibility requirement.

Learning: In P4suta/windows-spawn, issue #35 explicitly permits removal of the public `impl Drop for SuspendedChild`. In `src/child.rs`, `SuspendedChild` owns a `Child` whose private `ProcessHandle::drop` attempts to terminate the process while it is unstarted. Do not flag removal of this public Drop implementation as a violation of issue #35's compatibility requirement.

A guarded `let` whose initializer closes a block before an operator, such as `{ 1 } + Arc::strong_count(&arc)`, still ended at the brace.
A `let` statement and a `static`, `const`, `use`, or `type` item now end only at their `;`.
The scan finds the item's keyword past any further attribute and the visibility.
A `const fn` still ends with its body, and the scanner tests cover both kinds.
