The Reference Manual is MySQL's canonical documentation, maintained by Oracle and published per major/minor version (currently covering the 8.0, 8.4 LTS, and 9.x Innovation release lines side by side). It spans installation and upgrade instructions, the full SQL statement and function reference, storage engine internals (InnoDB, MyISAM, and others), replication and group replication setup, the security and privilege system, performance schema and monitoring, and the C/connector APIs.
27+
28+
Each version's manual is also downloadable as HTML, PDF, EPUB, and man pages for offline use, and the online version is kept current as patch releases ship.

DigitalOcean handles provisioning, daily backups with a 7-day point-in-time recovery window, software patching, and encryption for MySQL clusters, without charging separately for bandwidth to managed databases. Single-node clusters start at $15/month for development and testing; high-availability clusters start at $30/month per node with a matching standby node for automatic failover, and read-only replicas can be added in different regions and billed separately. Storage beyond the included allowance is billed per GiB in 10 GiB increments.
20+
21+
Managed Databases are covered by DigitalOcean's SOC 2 Type II audit, with data encrypted at rest via LUKS and connections enforced over TLS/SSL.

MaxScale forwards database statements to one or more backend servers using rules that understand both the SQL being sent and the role of each server in the topology — splitting reads from writes, failing over automatically when a primary goes down, and staying aware of Galera and standard replication cluster state. Its plugin architecture covers routing, authentication, filtering, and monitoring, and it ships official Docker images alongside packages for direct installation.
21+
22+
Licensing has changed twice: MaxScale moved from GPLv2 to the source-available Business Source License (BSL) in 2016, and as of MaxScale 25.01 (released January 16, 2025) MariaDB plc moved it again to a fully proprietary commercial license that requires an active MariaDB Enterprise subscription for production use. Versions prior to 25.01 remain under the BSL, which converts to GPLv2 automatically a fixed number of years after each release.

MySQL Shell is a scriptable client that runs in SQL, JavaScript, or Python mode, sitting alongside the classic `mysql` CLI as Oracle's more modern interface to the server. Beyond running queries, it ships dump and load utilities for fast logical backups and migrations, an upgrade-readiness checker for validating a server before a version jump, and an AdminAPI for creating and operating MySQL InnoDB Cluster, InnoDB ReplicaSet, and InnoDB ClusterSet high-availability topologies.
20+
21+
It's part of the MySQL Community distribution, released under GPLv2, and stays in lockstep with server releases — the current line carries full compatibility with MySQL 8.4 and 9.x, with best-effort support for querying and dump/load against older 8.0 and 5.7 servers. A companion "MySQL Shell for VS Code" extension adds a GUI notebook-style interface on top of the same shell.

The operator automates day-to-day cluster lifecycle work on Kubernetes: deploying group-replication MySQL clusters behind HAProxy or MySQL Router, exposing them through standard Kubernetes Services, customizing MySQL configuration, and managing system user passwords. It also wires clusters up to Percona Monitoring and Management for observability out of the box.
20+
21+
Group-replication clusters reached General Availability as of operator version 1.0.0; a second topology using Orchestrator and HAProxy for asynchronous replication is still in tech preview and not recommended for production. The project is released under the Apache License 2.0 and follows the Operator SDK/CNCF conventions, installable via `kubectl` bundle files or an official Helm chart.
