Cannot input Chinese characters in UI on Windows WSL

Environment:

Windows 11
WSL
Launching Orkas via ./run.sh

Issue:
After starting Orkas with ./run.sh inside WSL, Chinese input does not work in the UI.

Symptoms:

Cannot type any Chinese characters
Switching input methods has no effect
English input works normally
Tried multiple times and different input method switches

Expected behavior:
Chinese IME input should work normally in the UI under Windows + WSL environment.

Additional notes:
This issue seems related to IME/input method handling between WSL and the UI environment.

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue.

Could you help confirm whether Chinese IME works normally in other GUI applications launched from the same WSL environment, for example Firefox/Chromium, gedit, or another Electron app?

We do not currently have a Windows + WSL environment available to reproduce this locally, so we’ll need some time to investigate the WSL/IME interaction and narrow down the cause.

I would like to report a possible compatibility issue related to Electron running under WSL/WSLg.

Orkas starts successfully and the UI is displayed normally, but it is impossible to input Chinese characters.

After some investigation, this appears similar to known issues involving:

Electron
Chromium Wayland IME support
WSLg
fcitx5 / ibus input methods

There are existing reports in the Electron and WSLg communities where Electron applications running under WSLg cannot properly receive IME input events.

Examples:

Electron + Wayland IME issues
WSLg input method compatibility issues
fcitx5/ibus integration problems in Electron-based applications

I attempted to launch Electron with:

--enable-features=UseOzonePlatform
--ozone-platform=wayland
--enable-wayland-ime

but the problem still exists.

Would you be willing to try launching Orkas from WSL via the Windows-native launcher instead? This may avoid the WSLg IME issue by letting Orkas use the normal Windows IME path.

If you’re okay with trying this, you can replace the existing launch script with the one below and run Orkas from WSL as before.
