Adds the original Rival / Rival 300 command set: Rival 300 (1038:1710) and its editions — Rival Dota 2 (1038:1392), CS:GO Fade (1038:1394), Fallout 4 (1038:1712), Acer Predator (1038:1714), CS:GO Fade stm32 (1038:1716), HP OMEN (1038:1718), CS:GO Hyper Beast (1038:171A), Evil Geniuses (1038:171C). Codec (src/steelseries/rival-300.ts), catalog entries, and WebHID driver, all with tests.

Reconstructed from the vendor's own GG 121.0.0 rival_base.lisp profile (all editions and the original Rival Dota 2 include it), with rivalcfg's rival300.py independently corroborating every command byte.

  • DPI: 03 01/03 02 with a linear byte — rivalcfg's input_range [50, 6500, 50] → output_range [0x01, 0x82, 1], so byte = (dpi - 50)/50 + 1, 50–6500 in 50 DPI steps. The vendor struct's trailing dcpi byte is left at 0, as rivalcfg does.
  • Polling: 04 00 (01–04).
  • Lighting: two independent zones — logo (08 01 / effect 07 01) and wheel (08 02 / effect 07 02), each color + steady/breath.
  • Buttons: 31 00, six remappable slots (5-byte fields).
  • Save 09 00; firmware 10 00 → 2-byte reply, used as the connectivity probe; active preset index 16 00 readable.

All entries verified: false — no hardware exercised. npm run check passes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for SteelSeries Rival 300-family mice, including configuration of DPI presets, polling rate, logo and wheel lighting, and button mappings.
    • Rival 300 devices are now recognized by the app. Their DPI and polling-rate values are shown from settings last applied in the app, since the mouse does not report those settings directly.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 55b90

Changing a single button can disable the mouse's other buttons and save that state to the device. A DPI change can also be written to the wrong preset while reporting success. Fix both issues before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 55b90

The changes are limited to the selected mouse, with no demonstrated broader privilege or data exposure. Persistent writes can proceed without confirming the configuration interface, and an unreadable active preset can cause a different preset to be changed. Hardware behavior and application-level safeguards remain unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Low · architecture · observed: Configuration-interface validation is not a prerequisite for persistent writes. Matching checks vendor and product family only, while setDpi and the shared commit path can send configuration and save reports without the firmware probe described as establishing the configuration channel. This leaves interface ownership unenforced within the new client; whether external picker controls or browser report rejection prevent an incorrect-interface write remains unknown.
  • Low · reliability · observed: A failed active-preset read does not contain the mutation. Missing or malformed replies select preset 1, which setDpi then writes and saves while returning success. If preset 2 is actually active, this changes a different persistent preset instead of the requested active target. This failure policy is introduced with the new client, despite its documentation calling the fallback pre-existing.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated configuration-write scope is the HIDDevice supplied to one client. The registry and client do not show another device lookup or cross-client propagation. Persistent effects concern that mouse's onboard settings; broader service, tenant, credential, or data-store exposure is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A granted peripheral capable of supplying unexpected input payloads could influence the interpreted firmware or active preset because response ownership is not checked. Subsequent configuration writes remain bound to that same device. This is a bounded trust assumption, not a verified exploit; the interface's actual report behavior and application permission filters are unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Registry matching checks vendor and product family. readStatus additionally requires a decodable firmware response, and a silent interface is covered by a rejection test. This probe is not an authentication mechanism and is not required by mutation entrypoints. The inspected WebHID file declares permission APIs but does not implement picker filtering.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The queue permits later operations after rejection, and setDpi updates its cache only after save transmission succeeds. These controls limit ordinary operation overlap but do not establish atomic device persistence or recovery after interruption. Mock tests cover normal command ordering and silent-interface failure, not physical save acknowledgement or restoration.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Require an established configuration session before persistent mutations, and reject an unknown active preset rather than choosing another target. Define close and interrupted-save recovery so callers can distinguish confirmed, assumed, and indeterminate device state.

139-142: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Track the last-written preset 2 DPI, or state that it is untracked.

setDpiPreset2 does not record the value, while setDpi records lastWritten.dpi. The two writes are asymmetric. The preset 2 value is lost to the UI. The status note says values are last-written, so a short comment that preset 2 is intentionally untracked would avoid confusion.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Pass the exact byte view to sendReport.

payload.buffer as ArrayBuffer sends the whole underlying buffer. This is safe only while every payload owns a buffer of exactly its own length. All current encoders create fresh Uint8Array instances, so no bug exists today. A future payload that is a subarray or slice of a larger buffer would send extra bytes. Pass the view itself.

Proposed fix
-    await this.device.sendReport(RIVAL300_REPORT_ID, payload.buffer as ArrayBuffer);
+    await this.device.sendReport(RIVAL300_REPORT_ID, payload as BufferSource);

Addresses CodeRabbit: readStatus now reports the active preset's DPI and
setDpi writes the active preset (read via 0x16) rather than always preset
1, so a change takes effect after the CPI button switches presets. Both
presets are now tracked independently (each falling back to its rivalcfg
default), fixing the setDpi/setDpiPreset2 asymmetry. setDpiPreset2 still
writes preset 2 explicitly. Adds steelseriesRival300DecodeActivePreset.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not commit a partial mapping as a full button report.

setButtonsMapping accepts a partial mapping, but the encoder fills every omitted five-byte slot with 0x00. 0x00 is RIVAL300_BUTTON_DISABLE, so changing only button6 disables buttons 1–5 before the full report is saved.

Require a complete known mapping, or read and preserve existing assignments. Reject the update when those assignments cannot be preserved safely.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject an unknown active preset before writing DPI.

If the preset query times out or returns an invalid value while preset 2 is active, readActivePreset selects preset 1. setDpi then writes and saves preset 1, returns success, and leaves the active DPI unchanged. Propagate the query failure to setDpi instead of selecting a preset that the device did not report.

Based on learnings: “avoid silently swallowing errors, falling back to defaults … for unsupported or unexpected states.”
