Summary

Denounces battery + debounce as unverified against the vendor Terminal bundle (index-DVQlQedp.js) and fixes poll/DPI divergences found while re-reading the driver. Fake-HID sniff included.

Evidence (static bundle)

  • Mouse filter X6=[{14457,4368,page 65308,usage 146}]; 2055 PIDs are keyboard-side (7330/7338:2055, page 65440) -> drop mouse 0x0807.
  • Poll byte at reportUser (104): Ar.pollRate={mO/pO/yO, offset 104}; reportEsb/dpiRank are 0-7 receiver ranks (default Cv=7).
  • DPI limits rh=100/ih=30000; W7 gates keyboardBindings 57/40/53 (FW 1.16.0).
  • Battery: BATTERY:186 in bt table but mouse port never sends it (auto-read = version/report_esb/dpi_rank/dpi8Block/combined/chipIds; O() has no BATTERY branch). Decode best-effort.
  • Debounce: keyDebounceTime=109 from He map only; absent from Ar/O()/auto-read/UI strings. Raw R/W experimental.

Changes

  • src/wallhack/index.ts: PID set, poll-at-reportUser docs, DPI MIN/MAX, REPORT_USER_, wallhackBuildPollRateWrite, nearest-rank helper, MIN_FIRMWARE.keyboardBindings, wallhackBuildBatteryRead, WALLHACK_DEBOUNCE_ + docs.
  • mouse-hid.ts: readStatus/setPollingRate use reportUser; setDpi 100-30000; explicit readBattery(); debounce experimental.
  • scripts/sniff-wallhack-hid.ts: fake-HID proof (npx tsx scripts/sniff-wallhack-hid.ts).
  • Tests updated.

Verification

  • sniff: OK/OK/complete; npm test 2396 pass 0 fail; build clean

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added battery status reading, including charge percentage and charging state when available.
    • Added a way to inspect the mouse’s debounce time.
  • Improvements
    • Updated polling-rate handling to use the same rate setting across wired and wireless modes.
    • Polling-rate changes now accept only supported rates, and DPI and debounce settings use defined limits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The WALLHACK protocol updates polling-rate metadata and adds battery and debounce helpers. The HID client uses reportUser for polling rates and adds battery and debounce reads. Two scripts exercise client operations with mock HID devices.

Changes

WALLHACK HID

Layer / File(s) Summary
Protocol metadata and helpers
src/wallhack/index.ts, src/wallhack/protocol.test.ts
The protocol updates the M-001 product-ID set and polling-rate metadata. It adds DPI and reportUser constants, polling-rate helpers, a firmware minimum entry, a BATTERY packet builder, and debounce constants. Tests check the battery packet and debounce values.
HID client polling, debounce, and battery operations
src/drivers/wallhack/mouse-hid.ts, src/drivers/wallhack/hid.test.ts
Polling-rate reads and writes now use reportUser. DPI and debounce validation use protocol constants. The client adds readDebounceTime() and readBattery(). The status-test fixture sets the polling rate at reportUser.
Mock HID probe scripts
scripts/probe-wallhack-debounce.ts, scripts/sniff-wallhack-hid.ts
The scripts create mock HID devices and exercise client operations. The debounce probe reads areas 107–111 and debounce time. The HID script reads status and battery data, records commands, and writes debounce.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 331c0

The probe cannot measure a mouse’s factory default as instructed. Clarify or implement that workflow, and tighten the mock checks; the remaining risk is bounded to these scripts.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 331c0

Device selection becomes narrower, and the changed setters retain input validation and read-back confirmation. No introduced security finding was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because battery replies and debounce units are explicitly unverified on hardware.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated effects are confined to settings and reported status of the HIDDevice supplied to the mouse client, plus its discovery filters. The inspected dependency paths do not establish cross-service or tenant-wide authority expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Device-controlled input reports cross into client status and verification through command matching. Function-area replies expose an address, but the existing exchange matcher does not correlate that address or a request identity. This limitation predates the added reads; no newly demonstrated attacker reachability was established.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The single-waiter guard prevents response-waiter overwrite, but it does not serialize complete write-and-verify transitions. A late same-command reply can satisfy a later exchange, and failed confirmation can leave hardware changed. These are inherited reconciliation limits, not established security regressions from this PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For future transport hardening, serialize complete setting transitions, correlate function-area replies with their expected address, and reconcile device state after timeout or interruption before retrying. These proposals address inherited control-confirmation limits rather than an observed new vulnerability.

…I evidence

- Mouse PID set: drop 0x0807 (bundle X6 is 14457:4368 only; 2055 PIDs are keyboard-side)
- Poll rate lives at reportUser (104) per vendor mO/pO/yO + Ar table, not reportUsb/reportEsb (0-7 receiver ranks); add wallhackBuildPollRateWrite + nearest-rank helper
- DPI vendor limits 100-30000 (rh/ih); add constants
- MIN_FIRMWARE: add keyboardBindings 57/40/53 gate from W7
- Battery (0xBA): vendor mouse port never sends it (auto-read = version/report_esb/dpi_rank/dpi8Block/combined/chipIds; O() has no BATTERY branch) — add wallhackBuildBatteryRead, mark decode best-effort, add readBattery() + fake-HID sniff script proving explicit-only flow
- Debounce (area 109): address-known from He but absent from Ar/O()/auto-read/UI — mark experimental with range constants, keep raw R/W
- Update hid.test.ts fixture to reportUser; add codec test
Vendor bundle never touches area 109 (absent from Ar/O()/auto-read/UI/demo);
updater exe has no debounce strings either. Add safe read-only probe script
and public readDebounceTime(); document hardware experiment (factory default
first, then bounded default+-1 write probe with restore).

Assert the debounce write address in the sniff script.

setDebounceTime() targets the documented area 109, so this is a coverage gap in the sniff assertion, not evidence that the driver currently writes the wrong area. Record the decoded address and fail when no write targets 109.

Assert that readBattery() sends its own command and returns a response.

readStatus() sends a BATTERY command before the direct read. The final batteryCount >= 1 assertion can therefore pass if readBattery() sends no command. The script also only logs direct, so it does not check the direct response.

Update the direct `client.readBattery()` check so it verifies that this call
increases the observed BATTERY command count and that its returned `direct`
response is non-null; do not rely on the cumulative count, which may include the
earlier `readStatus()` probe.

Do not describe the fake transport as a hardware probe.

The documented command always creates makeFake({ 109: 8 }), passes that device to WallhackMouseHidClient, and does not enumerate or connect to real hardware. It reports the seeded value 8 for area 109, not the mouse’s factory default. Add a hardware-backed mode, or mark the script as fake-only and remove the hardware instructions.
