Onboard-memory hybrid mode: while the web panel is disconnected, Bridge applies the mouse's stored settings and reads the battery itself, handing over live when the panel connects
Startup discovery scans the HID bus so the tray shows battery and onboard settings (DPI / polling rate / switch mode) from the first second, no profile required; discovered ids are canonicalized onto the panel's <brand>:\ convention so devices never show twice
Web panel battery reporter sends the onboard settings it reads (openmouse repo, already merged)
Version bump to 1.0.0-beta.19; the tag-driven release workflow is running for this tag
Test plan
\cargo test --no-fail-fast\ green locally (only the Unix-fixture updater test fails off-CI for lack of \sh)
\cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings\ clean; \cargo build --release\ runs live with discovery verified against a Logitech PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2 SE (81% · 800 DPI · 1000 Hz · Hybrid, zero saved profiles)
Adds hybrid device mode: the service tracks whether the web panel (Live) or Bridge (Onboard) controls the mouse, and reapplies the stored onboard profile plus an immediate battery poll when a panel disconnects (service.rs, config.rs)
Adds startup HID discovery that merges detected mice with saved-profile devices without opening them, and reads native status (battery, DPI, polling rate, switch mode) through a shared polling pass (drivers/mod.rs, drivers/native_hid.rs, drivers/pulsar.rs)
Renders a live tray battery icon (glyph or percentage style) with color-coded charge state and remaining-time tooltip; Settings gains Hybrid and Battery display controls; Home shows onboard DPI, polling rate, and switch mode (desktop.rs, platform/windows.rs)
Estimates battery time remaining from a bounded history (up to 48 samples over six hours, minimum 30-minute span), rounded to five minutes and suppressed above 48 hours
Risk: NativeBattery lost Copy and now owns an optional model-name string, and the helper apply path can now forward opaque profile settings snapshots; consumers of these types in native_hid.rs are updated in-tree
The tray can display battery level as a glyph or percentage, with charging-state colors and a tooltip showing battery status and estimated time remaining.
The home view can show a mouse’s onboard DPI, polling rate, and switch mode.
Hybrid mode lets Bridge apply saved settings and monitor battery while the app is disconnected, then hand control back when it reconnects. Without a saved profile, onboard settings remain untouched.
Settings now include controls for hybrid mode and tray battery display style.
…device summary
While the web panel is disconnected, Bridge now drives the mouse itself
in onboard memory mode: the active profile's stored settings are pushed
natively, the battery is read directly (a full status read that also
reports the current DPI, polling rate and switch mode), and the panel
takes the mouse over live the moment it connects.
Startup discovery scans the HID bus for mice whose brands the native-hid
helper has drivers for, so the tray shows the battery from the first
second - no web panel connection and no saved profile required. A
discovered mouse's reading is canonicalized onto the panel's
"<brand>:<model>" device id, so the same mouse never shows up twice.
The tray icon gained a control-panel-chosen battery display style (the
native Segoe battery glyph or the bold percentage number), and the tray
panel shows a device summary under the profile row: DPI, polling rate
and switch mode as read from the mouse's onboard memory. Both panel
views now size themselves to their content, so nothing clips.
The web panel's battery reporter sends the settings it reads too, and
Bridge merges reports that omit them instead of blanking stored values.
… redesigned panel
The redesigned tray panel (PR #41) replaced the old layout wholesale; this
re-applies the panel features on top of it, in its idiom:
The tray icon shows the mouse's battery again — the Segoe battery glyph or
the bold percentage number, per the control panel's tray-icon style, tinted
by charge state (green charged/charging, amber mid, red at the low threshold,
gray stale) — and redraws only when the display would change. It returns to
the static logo when no battery is known and after a resume recreates it.
The Settings view gains "Device mode" and "Tray icon" panels: the hybrid
switch with its caption, and the glyph/percentage picker.
The Home view shows a device summary under the profile panel — the mouse's
live onboard-memory settings as read from the hardware ("Onboard: 800 DPI ·
1000 Hz · Hybrid"), profile or no profile — and the window grows to fit it.
Bridge now discovers supported mice and reads battery and onboard settings. It tracks onboard and live modes, estimates battery time remaining, and adds configurable battery displays and device summaries to the desktop tray and Home panel.
Changes: Device status and hybrid operation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Native discovery and status reading native-hid/src/apply.mjs, src/drivers/*
Mouse discovery and native status reads now include battery, device name, DPI, polling rate, and switch mode. The native helper reports these fields and accepts supported switch-mode settings.
Battery state and mode handover src/service.rs, src/main.rs, README.md
Bridge combines discovered mice with profiled devices, records battery history and onboard settings, and estimates remaining charge or discharge time. A mode monitor tracks panel connectivity and resumes native profile application and battery polling when hybrid mode is enabled.
Tray and Home status display src/config.rs, src/platform/*, src/desktop.rs, README.md, Cargo.toml
The tray displays battery icons or percentages, charge status, and optional time estimates. The Home panel can show onboard settings. Settings expose hybrid mode and battery-display style; platform code renders battery images and reads tray-theme information.

OpenMouse-Project/mouse-protocol#247 — The changes add Bridge battery telemetry and DPI/polling readback, which overlap the issue’s stated objectives; the summaries do not establish completion of its hardware-support scope.
OpenMouse-Project/OpenMouse-Bridge#36 — Startup discovery and merging discovered mice with profile devices overlap the issue’s device-list state. The summaries do not describe stale-entry removal as an implemented objective.
The headline hybrid-mode feature does not activate on desktop builds, because the monitor that hands control back to the device is never started. Large saved-profile snapshots could also stop DPI and polling-rate settings from applying. Fix these before merging; the config-save race is a smaller follow-up.

With no saved profile, a discovered mouse’s canonical battery entry is evicted after three five-minute polls even though the mouse is still detected. prune_batteries receives the discovery ID, while polling records the entry under the canonical ID; eviction also clears its history and last_alert, so the next low-battery reading can notify before the cooldown expires. Preserve the discovered-to-canonical ID mapping when pruning.

Closing the panel can leave an application’s temporary DPI applied instead of restoring its baseline: this path calls drivers::apply_profile, which invalidates NativeAutomation’s restore ownership. It also writes by brand without checking the profile’s device identity, and a queued thread can apply a disabled or superseded profile after a newer switch. Route the handover through automatic reconciliation so it preserves the restore journal, validates device identity, and serializes selection with application.

When the panel disconnects with multiple running-activated profiles eligible, resume_onboard selects the first configured profile instead of retaining the active one, so it can write profile A’s settings while the monitor still reports profile B. Concurrent calls to update_config can have their saved changes lost when either setter writes its earlier full-config snapshot afterward; a failed save also leaves the setter's in-memory value changed. Both setters release the state lock before saving, so route them through update_config to serialize the update and save as one transaction.

Start the mode monitor in the desktop runtime. Hybrid mode does not run on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
start_mode_monitor is called only in the headless run in src/main.rs Line 67. That function compiles only for targets that are not Windows, macOS, or Linux. run_server is the runtime for all desktop builds, and it starts only the game monitor and the battery monitor.
On every supported desktop platform, this causes the following:
device_mode stays "onboard" in each snapshot.
When the panel disconnects, resume_onboard never runs. The stored settings are not re-applied, and the battery is not read again at once.

Update the "Current boundary" section. It contradicts the new hybrid-mode text.
Lines 23-35 now describe these behaviors:
startup discovery without a saved profile
a native Pulsar battery reader
native application of switch mode
The "Current boundary" section still says the following:
Battery polling covers only "devices in saved profiles".
"Pulsar currently has no background battery reader".
Settings snapshots are "applied and restored by an open control panel".
Rewrite this section to match the new behavior.

Persist hybrid_mode and tray_battery_style through update_config.
set_hybrid_mode and set_tray_battery_style change state.config, release the write lock, and then call config::save with a clone. update_config saves while it holds the lock.
Assume an API call such as replace_profiles runs between the lock release and the save. That call saves the new profiles.
This save then writes the older clone and overwrites the new profiles on disk.
A save failure also leaves memory and disk different, because memory was changed first.

Preserve automatic ownership during onboard handover.
resume_onboard calls crate::drivers::apply_profile, which is the manual path. For Zaunkoenig DPI or polling settings, that path increments ManualIntent. The next reconcile_automatic observes the changed generation, removes ownership of those fields, and reports native automatic settings superseded by manual intent.
The existing test demonstrates this behavior. After apply_profile(&manual), reconciliation reports manual intent, and automatic exit restores only the untouched field. Therefore, when a game profile is active, disconnecting the panel can prevent Bridge from restoring that profile’s DPI or polling rate later.
Use an onboard handover path that preserves automatic ownership. Do not use apply_profile for this handover.
