feat: add local app profiles and harden Bridge - #40
Add persistent local game/app targets, explicit activation modes, stable profile links, and macOS bundle resolution
Make profile selection deterministic while preserving legacy activation behavior
Add acknowledged Zaunkoenig native apply/restore with manual-override protection and live device identity checks
Refresh the egui panel with shared OpenMouse styling, DM Sans, clearer connection/profile states, and improved battery reporting
Harden API validation, HID ownership, report queues, timeouts, and cancellation handling
Secure update downloads and archive extraction; add transactional installation, rollback, and safe relaunch
Fix Linux tray recovery, event handling, and XDG startup integration - Update ZIP handling and include font licences in platform packages
Expand regression coverage and cross-platform CI/release gates
Note
Add local app profiles and harden Bridge update, HID, and request handling
Adds a local-application catalog with GET/PUT API endpoints, config persistence, and canonicalization. Profiles can target local apps by ID with running or focused activation, and profile resolution matches these targets against running processes (see local_targets.rs and service.rs).
Hardens the updater: bounded downloads and archive extraction, safe path validation, no link following, private staging directories, and transactional install with backup and rollback on Unix and Windows (see updater.rs).
Adds a request gate requiring a loopback Host and null or allowed Origin, bounded HID WebSocket frames at 64 KiB, and a 64-item HID input queue that fails the session on overflow (see api.rs and hid.rs).
Adds Zaunkoenig native automation: automatic-read/automatic-apply CLI actions, verified device identity before hardware access, serialized reconciliation, and ownership tracking with baseline restore on manual changes.
Redesigns the tray panel with a custom titlebar, work-area clamping, and new native UI theme using the DM Sans font. Also fixes POSIX path case handling in icon identity and makes config saves atomic via temp-file rename.
Risk: behavior changes are broad — the request gate rejects non-loopback or mismatched Host/Origin requests; native settings now return 429 when another operation or an active HID session holds the device; profile identity keys and dedup rules changed in config.rs; games responses now return generic JSON including local apps instead of preset GameConfig values.
The pull request adds local application targets, native HID automation, a rebuilt desktop panel, bounded update and HID I/O, safer Linux startup entries, Mach-O validation, transactional updates, and expanded CI and release checks.

Summary
Local targets and API src/local_targets.rs, src/config.rs, src/api.rs, src/service.rs, tests/backend_local_profiles.rs
Adds validated local applications, bundle metadata, activation modes, profile linkage, persistence, CRUD endpoints, loopback request checks, and atomic configuration updates.
Profile detection and native automation src/games.rs, src/service.rs, src/drivers/*, native-hid/src/*
Adds process-aware local matching and verified Zaunkoenig read/apply flows with ownership tracking, restoration, acknowledgements, and identity checks.
HID and update safety src/hid.rs, src/drivers/native_hid.rs, src/updater.rs
Two reliability gaps should be fixed before merge. A wireless mouse that is unreachable when a game exits can leave its DPI and polling rate unrestored and block later automatic profile applies. A leftover updater lock can leave the Bridge closed after an update attempt. The other findings are small behavior issues.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 98294
The change adds meaningful validation and device-access safeguards. However, an abruptly interrupted update can leave the installation incomplete and block subsequent updates until manual recovery. The impact is confined to the affected local installation.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new installer has no recovery transition for an abruptly terminated transaction. Both platform helpers acquire a persistent lock and move installed components into backups before installing replacements. Termination or reboot between those steps can leave the binary missing or the package incomplete, while later installation attempts reject the surviving lock. Ordinary error rollback and backup retention are useful countermeasures, but do not recover this state. Compared with the base, this introduces persistent update blocking and, on Unix, a new missing-binary window. Local operation and subsequent security-update delivery can require manual restoration.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The retained interruption concern affects the local installation directory, its executable and native helper package. It can interrupt local operation and prevent later updates; the inspected path does not establish cross-tenant, cross-service or remote privilege escalation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new local-target route uses the global loopback Host, URI-authority and present-Origin checks. Requests without Origin remain accepted within the local-process trust model. Existing profile mutation and native-settings capabilities predate this PR; the new route expands managed configuration capability rather than demonstrating a new authorization bypass.
observed — Automatic native writes are restricted to acknowledged Zaunkoenig automation. The helper rejects missing, ambiguous or changed identity, checks reported device ownership, validates requested settings, and closes the client after the operation. Browser report access invalidates automatic ownership of fields it may change.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Failed automatic writes retain their original restoration baseline. Restoration is attempted before further writes and capped at three attempts, with exhausted entries retained as pending. This bounds repeated hardware operations but does not guarantee eventual automatic recovery.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give update transactions an explicit restart-recovery protocol with recorded ownership and phase, validated backup reconciliation, and a supported repair path before another installation begins. Recovery should distinguish a live transaction from an abandoned one rather than simply deleting the lock.

The non-macOS dead-code path is gated.

src/platform/mod.rs: 1
11-12: 🩺 Stability & Availability
The claim that linux.rs breaks non-Linux cargo test builds is contradicted by the module's source. The file uses only the standard library, anyhow, and directories. It has no references to gtk, x11rb, libc, or std::os Linux-only APIs. Its #[cfg(test)] test module exercises only the cross-platform desktop_entry function.
The pub point does not establish a defect. mod.rs re-exports the items from linux only under target_os = "linux", and a private mod linux would still satisfy that re-export. Nothing in src or tests references linux:: outside mod.rs. The change widens the module's visibility without a demonstrated consequence.

The non-Zaunkoenig removal is not a supported defect.
The previous monitor used the broader apply_profile path. The new native automation uses acknowledged readback, identity checks, and restoration, and its contract supports only Zaunkoenig. No repository requirement establishes that automatic apply for other brands must remain. A fallback to apply_profile would also bypass the new baseline and restoration flow.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Add an explicit interpreter and strict mode.
The script has no shebang and uses set -eu without pipefail. It also uses source and sources install-linux.sh, which uses bash syntax such as [[ ]] and ${value:index:1}. Running it with sh fails. Select the interpreter explicitly so that direct execution works.
Proposed fix
-set -eu+#!/usr/bin/env bash+set -euo pipefail
Based on learnings: flag Bash scripts that lack an explicit shebang or set -euo pipefail.

<title>Desktop Entry Specification</title>

L70: ## 2 File naming 【4†#】
L71:
L72: Desktop entry files should have the `.desktop` extension, except for files of `Type` `Directory` which should have the `.directory` extension. Determining file type on basis of extension makes determining the file type very easy and quick. When no file extension is present, the desktop system should fall back to recognition via "magic detection".
L73: For applications, the part of the name of the desktop file before the `.desktop` extension should be a valid 【25†D-Bus well-known name (https://dbus.freedesktop.org/doc/dbus-specification.html#message-protocol-names)†dbus.freedesktop.org】.
L74: This means that it is a sequence of non-empty elements separated by dots (U+002E FULL STOP), none of which starts with a digit, and each of which contains only characters from the set `[A-Za-z0-9-_]`: ASCII letters, digits, dash (U+002D HYPHEN-MINUS) and underscore (U+005F LOW LINE).
L75: The name of the desktop entry should follow the "reverse DNS" convention: it should start with a reversed DNS domain name controlled by the author of the application, in lower case. The domain name should be followed by the name of the application, which is conventionally written with words run together and initial capital letters (CamelCase).
L76: For example, if the owner of `example.org` writes "Foo Viewer", they might choose the name `org.example.FooViewer`, resulting in a file named `org.example.FooViewer.desktop`.
L77: Well-known names containing the dash are allowed but not recommended, because the dash is not allowed in some related uses of reversed DNS names, such as D-Bus object paths and interface names, and Flatpak app IDs. If the author's domain name contains a dash, replacing it with an underscore is recommended: this cannot cause ambiguity, because underscores are not allowed in DNS domain names.
L78: If the author's domain name contains a label starting with a digit, (which is not allowed in D-Bus well-known names), prepending an underscore to that element of the desktop entry name is recommended. For example, 7-zip.org might release an application named `org._7_zip.Archiver`.
L79: ### 2.1 Desktop File ID 【26†#】
L80:
L81: Each desktop entry representing an application is identified by its desktop file ID, which is based on its filename.
L82:
L83: To determine the ID of a desktop file, make its full path relative to the `$XDG_DATA_DIRS` component in which the desktop file is installed, remove the "applications/" prefix, and turn '/' into '-'.
L84:
L85: For example `/usr/share/applications/foo/bar.desktop` has the desktop file ID `foo-bar.desktop`.
L86: If multiple files have the same desktop file ID, the first one in the $XDG_DATA_DIRS precedence order is used.
L87:
L88: For example, if `$XDG_DATA_DIRS` contains the default paths /usr/local/share:/usr/share, then `/usr/local/share/applications/org.foo.bar.desktop` and `/usr/share/applications/org.foo.bar.desktop` both have the same desktop file ID `org.foo.bar.desktop`, but only the first one will be used.
L89:
L90: If both `foo-bar.desktop` and `foo/bar.desktop` exist, it is undefined which is selected.
L91: If the desktop file is not installed in an `applications` subdirectory of one of the $XDG_DATA_DIRS components, it does not have an ID.
L92: ## 3 Basic format of the file 【5†#】
L93:
L94: Desktop entry files are encoded in UTF-8. A file is interpreted as a series of lines that are separated by linefeed characters. Case is significant everywhere in the file.
L95: Compliant implementations MUST not remove any fields from the file, even if they don't support them. Such fields must be maintained in a list somewhere, and if the file is "rewritten", they will be included. This ensures th…[truncated]</excerpt>

Escape that closes a popup also hides the panel.
logic hides the panel on any Escape press while it is visible. The Settings view has an egui::ComboBox for "Low battery alert". In egui, Escape closes an open popup, but input.key_pressed(egui::Key::Escape) still reports the same press. As a result, one Escape press closes the dropdown and hides the whole panel. The keyboard user then has to reopen the panel from the tray.
logic runs before ui, so the popup state from the previous frame is still available at this point. Hide the panel only when no popup is open. For example, check egui::Popup::is_any_open(context) or use the equivalent memory API in eframe 0.36.

Update the Escape handling in `logic` to hide the panel only when no egui popup
is open, using the popup-state API available in eframe 0.36. Preserve the
existing visibility and Escape-key checks so Escape closes an open popup without
also hiding the panel.

Retry restore after a delay instead of stopping after three attempts.
After the third failed restore write, the entry keeps failed = true. Nothing resets restore_attempts, and every later reconcile skips the write. The entry stays until restart, or until manual DPI and polling changes release both owned fields.
While the entry exists:
apply rejects every new profile for that device with "previous native restoration must finish before another write" (src/drivers/automation.rs:173-174).
Each reconcile repeats the "three attempts exhausted" error (lines 135-136).
The original DPI and polling rate are not restored when the device returns.
A device that is off or asleep when the game exits can cause this. The cap then stops retries even though a later write could succeed.
Replace the permanent cap with a retry delay. Store the next allowed attempt time, and increase the delay after each failure up to a maximum. The 64-entry limit and the "baseline retained" behaviour can stay. The test at lines 430-442 asserts five write calls, so it needs updating once retries are time-based.
- if entry.restore_attempts >= 3 {- errors.push(format!("{id}: native restoration pending; three attempts exhausted, original baseline retained"));+ if entry.next_attempt.is_some_and(|at| std::time::Instant::now() < at) {+ errors.push(format!("{id}: native restoration pending; retrying later, original baseline retained"));
continue;
}
- entry.restore_attempts += 1;+ entry.restore_attempts = entry.restore_attempts.saturating_add(1);+ let delay = std::time::Duration::from_secs(3u64 << entry.restore_attempts.min(6));+ entry.next_attempt = Some(std::time::Instant::now() + delay);

Review comment at @src/drivers/automation.rs around lines 135 - 138:
Replace the permanent three-attempt stop in the native restoration reconcile
path with a time-based retry delay: track the next allowed attempt per entry,
defer writes until then, and increase the delay after failures up to a maximum.
Preserve the 64-entry limit and retained-baseline behavior, and update the retry
test to verify time-based attempts rather than a fixed five writes.

Skip invalid catalog entries instead of rejecting the catalog.
BridgeConfig::normalized() previously removed invalid games after loading the catalog. The new deserializers reject the complete catalog when one entry is invalid. load_with_catalog() then keeps the cached catalog, so valid new entries are not refreshed.
Skip invalid entries while preserving the catalog byte and game-count limits.

Update the executable deserialization logic around `seq.next_element` to skip
invalid executable entries instead of returning an error that rejects the entire
catalog, while preserving the catalog byte and game-count limits. Ensure a game
with no remaining valid executables is handled consistently with the prior
normalization behavior so valid catalog entries can still refresh.

Apply the debounce to profile exit as well as profile switch.
The guard defers native work only when selected is Some and differs from applied_profile. When selected becomes None while applied_profile is still Some, the debounce has not settled. The guard still passes desired = None to the worker, so the restore runs at once.
Consider a Focused local app and no default profile. Each short alt-tab then triggers a restore write. The return to the app triggers another apply write. That repeats mouse writes and defeats PROFILE_DEBOUNCE.
Skip the worker until arbitration has set applied_profile to the selected value.

This change does not break native_selection_rechecks_disabled_profile_before_hardware. A disabled profile still never reaches the writer, and the restore happens after the debounce.

A leftover update lock blocks every later update and stops the Bridge from relaunching.
mkdir "$lock" fails if .openmouse-update.lock already exists, and the helper then runs exit 1. complete_update treats exit status 1 as "do not relaunch". No file has changed at that point, so it would be safe to relaunch the existing Bridge. Two states leave the lock behind:
The helper is killed mid-transaction, for example by power loss or SIGKILL.
A rollback fails. The script keeps the lock on purpose in that case.
In either state, every later update follows the same path. The Bridge stages the update and exits. The helper fails on the lock and does not relaunch the Bridge. With automatic updates, this repeats each time the user starts the Bridge manually. The Windows helper behaves the same way: New-Item $Lock throws, so Complete-BridgeUpdate skips $Launch. The existing-lock test confirms this behavior.
The Rust side never checks the lock before handoff. verify_install_directory checks links and writability but does not check .openmouse-update.lock. The update therefore fails only after the Bridge has already exited.
Suggested fix:
Reject the update in verify_install_directory when the lock exists. The error then reaches UpdateEvent::Failed while the Bridge is still running.
Make a pre-mutation lock failure in the helper return the "unchanged, relaunch" status, which is 2 on Unix. Keep the no-relaunch status only for a failed rollback.
// in verify_install_directory, before the writability probeensure!(
matches!(fs::symlink_metadata(directory.join(".openmouse-update.lock")),Err(ref e)if e.kind() == io::ErrorKind::NotFound),"a previous Bridge update did not finish; remove .openmouse-update.lock after checking the install");

Update verify_install_directory to reject an existing .openmouse-update.lock
before the Bridge hands off the update, so failure is reported while it remains
running. In the Unix update helper, return status 2 when lock creation or
transaction-directory creation fails before any mutation; reserve the
no-relaunch status for failed rollback.
