I've updated the rest of the README to match the new setup with just the single master main line branch for v3. I've drop all mentions of keeping the release branches in sync with master by backporting changes.

The maintenance documentation needs updating for the changes to branch structure and gestalt compatibility that happened in #47.
(I made one small change so far just to get a draft branch open.)
