It seems there is a float to int (round down) applied to middle_grey before its value is used. Here are two screenshots:
At middle_grey=1.0:

At middle_grey=0.99:

That is causing the known bug where auto-exposure => way too dim scenes, that is because middle_grey being at 0 the exposure is always at "min_exposure".
If a round down is indeed the cause, fixing it shouldn't be a big headache and would bring back auto-exposure! :)
