Proof document

docs/README-PROOF-2026-10-15.md: every README command run in order on a clean clone of main (68912f5), Ubuntu 24.04, Python 3.13.16, no GPU, no Ollama (the egress proxy of the session refuses ollama.com).

README command Result
sudo apt install poppler-utils tesseract-ocr failed on a fresh image (Unable to locate package tesseract-ocr); passed after apt update
ollama pull gemma2:2b not run here: Ollama cannot be installed in the container
pip install pillow reportlab pytest passed
python3 samples/make_samples.py passed, 2.8 s; rewrites the two committed PDFs; needs the DejaVu Serif font at a Debian path
./demo/run_demo.sh not run here: ask and the naive baseline need Ollama; the model-free lines match demo/transcript.txt
python3 -m pytest -q tests passed, 11 of 11, on the regenerated and on the committed PDFs
everypage read, everypage find on both samples passed, output identical to the transcript
everypage ask not run here (Ollama); without it, exits 1 with a Connection refused traceback

Measured, not read: with Pillow made unimportable, read marks page 6 UNREADABLE and returns 5 of 6 pages.

Workflow run

.github/workflows/tests.yml (Poppler, Tesseract, the three pip packages, everypage read on the sample, pytest): green on this branch, https://github.com/MariusGithub13/everypage/actions/runs/38730455410

Secret scan

detect-secrets 1.5.0 scan --all-files on the working tree: 0 findings in tracked files (one hex string flagged in the untracked, gitignored .pytest_cache/CACHEDIR.TAG). A grep for key prefixes, e-mail addresses and IPs found only the SECURITY contact and 127.0.0.1.

README corrections

  1. sudo apt install became sudo apt update && sudo apt install: the bare line fails on a fresh Ubuntu.
  2. Pillow moved out of "only for the samples and the tests": ingest.py imports it to turn a sideways scan before OCR; without it the sideways page is unreadable (measured).
  3. samples/make_samples.py marked optional, the two PDFs being committed, and its hard-coded DejaVu Serif font path named; the README's brew install path has no such file.
  4. One sentence on what ask does when Ollama is not running: a Connection refused traceback and exit code 1, the same code as NOT FOUND.
  5. The Python version used is stated; the README named none.

Also added: CONTRIBUTING.md (how to run the tests, how to report a wrong answer with the PDF, command, full output and exit code) and SECURITY.md (reports to office@devaland.com). No code, dependency, licence or topic changed.

Suggested topics (not applied)

pdf, ocr, tesseract, poppler, local-llm, document-qa, cli, python

…g, add CI and hygiene files

- docs/README-PROOF-2026-10-15.md: each README command run on a clean clone, with output; `ask` and the demo recorded as not run here (no Ollama in the container)
- README: `apt update` before `apt install` (the bare line fails on a fresh Ubuntu); Pillow is required for a sideways scan, not only for samples and tests (measured); the sample generator is optional and needs the DejaVu Serif font; what `ask` does without Ollama; Python version used
- .github/workflows/tests.yml: Poppler, Tesseract, the three pip packages, `everypage read` on the sample, pytest; no model, no secrets
- CONTRIBUTING.md and SECURITY.md
