MepClasses

The MepClasses were introduced by LINEAR in 2025 to enable BIM-compliant work by design with a classification scheme that is precise and rich enough for calculation and as a basis for mapping to other classifications like IFC or cost groups according to different localized standards.

Domain.Function.Class

The MepClass hierarchy has exactly three levels.

1. Domain

This top level groups all classes belonging to a certain application domain, e.g.:

  • AirHandling (Ventilation)
  • Electrical
  • FireSafety (Fire Protection)
  • Gas
  • Thermal (Heating/Cooling)
  • Water (Fresh Water/Drainage)

2. Function

In the second classification level, objects with similar functions are grouped together, such as for the domain Thermal (heating/cooling), where expansion vessels and backflow preventers can both be found under Safety (safety device). The function is therefore Safety.

3. Class

Finally, the object class is defined, which is a specific type of the FUNCTION. For the Safety function, these could be backflow preventers, expansion vessels, low water cut-off devices or maximum pressure limiters.

Practical usage

This allows for the filtering of each individual component by adding the respective dots to text-based filters. For instance a contains-filter on ".Terminal." allows to filter for all terminal elements, regardless of the domain.
