Closes #46

Python versions

CI tested 3.11 and 3.12. Nothing runs 3.11, and the newest Python was not tested at all. It now tests:

  • 3.12: what Ubuntu 24.04 ships, and what the server runs (3.12.3).
  • 3.14: the newest stable release, so a dependency that breaks on it shows up here rather than on the next OS upgrade.

The declared minimum (README, mypy.ini, ruff.toml) moves from 3.11 to 3.12 to match.

Workflow

  • ruff and mypy run once, in a lint job, instead of once per Python version.
  • actions/checkout v4 → v7 and actions/setup-python v5 → v7. The only breaking change in between is setup-python dropping the pip-install input, which this workflow never used.
  • A new push to a branch cancels the run still going for the previous one.

Dependabot

.github/dependabot.yml proposes weekly updates for pip (requirements.txt, requirements-dev.txt) and for GitHub Actions, the latter grouped into one PR. Two deliberate exceptions, each explained in the file:

  • yt-dlp: unpinned on purpose and updated daily on the server by deploy/update-ytdlp.sh.
  • PyNaCl 1.6+: discord.py 2.7.1 caps it below 1.6.

Dependabot alerts and security updates are enabled in the repository settings as well.

Testing

The checks on this PR are the test: the new lint job, and pytest on 3.12 and 3.14.

CI tested 3.11, which nothing runs, and not 3.14, the newest release. It
now tests 3.12 (Ubuntu 24.04, the deployed version) and 3.14, and the
declared minimum moves to 3.12. Lint and type check run once in their own
job instead of per Python version. Actions move to v7, and a new push
cancels the run for the previous one.

Dependabot proposes weekly pip and Actions updates, except yt-dlp, which
the server updates daily, and PyNaCl 1.6+, which discord.py 2.7.1 does
not allow.
