feat(skills): add the intentface-ui coding-agent skill (UI-2) - #117
Coding agents building with @intentface/ui miss what the package hides: the state props, data attributes and CSS variables that carry each part's state, the build order the thread depends on, and the traps that break landing and auto-follow. This adds a skill they install with npx skills add Intentface/intentface-ui, so they build working, polished chats in the app's own design system. Part of UI-2.
What changed
skills/intentface-ui/SKILL.md holds the rules:
the entry points, each with its docs page
the order to work in, and the options to offer before building, each with its default
how props, data attributes and CSS variables carry state
rule tables for the thread, message rows, the composer, steps and reasoning, motion, keyboard, accessibility and the checks to run
It links to the docs instead of copying the API.
references/ holds the detail:
Read before styling or animating a part: state.md (each prop, attribute and variable, with the element it sits on and when it's present), styling.md (what the package sets and what the app sets) and motion.md.
patterns.md has the worked examples, which carry no visual style of their own.
attachments.md, ask-user.md, shell.md and generative.md hold the rules for the options that are off by default. The agent reads them only when that option is on.
scripts/audit-docs.mjs now covers all 11 namespaces and the skill. In the skill's Markdown it checks entry points, parts, JSX props, data attributes, CSS variables and docs links against the package, so a stale name fails CI. Variables the skill defines itself pass.
The composer writes its size variables from literal names, so the audit can find them. The variables are the same, and the changeset is empty.
/docs-markdown expands <include> tags and is prerendered. The changelog page linked from the skill served a raw <include> tag, and Turbopack ignored the file-tracing include the route relied on.
Blast Radius
No package API changes. /docs-markdown now serves only prerendered pages, so an unknown slug returns 404 instead of rendering on request.
#107 has to update the skill. It removes Thread.Overlay, --thread-overlay-bottom-height, --thread-turn-min-height and data-thread-overlay, which the skill teaches, and the audit fails until the Thread rules use the new names.
The six package bugs from the review are filed as UI-80 to UI-85. The skill describes today's behavior. Each issue names the skill rows to update when it's fixed, because the audit checks names, not behavior.
Verification
scripts/audit-docs.mjs, Biome and tsc pass. Every example in the references type-checks against the package source and the installed ai, @ai-sdk/react, next, zod and lucide-react.
Smoke builds. Claude Code built chats with the skill in three apps, each styled from a different DESIGN.md (Linear, SF Compute, Vercel), against a local stub route that streams reasoning, a tool call, an askUser question and an error. Each round's failures became rules: the placeholder's position, the landing gap, overlays covering the scrollbar, and motion.
Two independent reviews.
One checked the prose and structure against pstack's unslop, technical-writing and skill-development standards.
The other checked every default, attribute, variable and behavior claim against the source, with happy-dom probes, a Chrome fixture and a Tailwind compile of the examples' classes.
Their findings are fixed in the last commit.
Measured in Chrome: the landing gap, with the padding on Thread.Viewport, and the thread variables. WebKit and Firefox were not checked.
Not done:
npx skills add was not run, because npm's minimum release age blocked the pinned CLI version.
The UI-75 runs on Claude Code and Codex have not run.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Documentation
Added a guide for building and maintaining chat interfaces, with references for attachments, motion, styling, state, navigation shells, and common chat patterns.
Added guidance for ask-user flows and experimental generative UI, including attachment submission and recovery guidance.
Documentation pages can include shared Markdown content, which is incorporated into the rendered page.
New Features
Documentation pages are generated during the build and are available for known routes.
writeBox built --composer-height and the rest from a prefix, so no
string in the source held a published variable's full name. The docs
audit finds published variables by their quoted names, and a search for
--composer-height now lands on the line that writes it.
Refs UI-2
/changelog.md returned the page's raw <include> tag instead of the
release notes, so an agent following llms.txt to the changelog had
nothing to upgrade from. The markdown route now inlines included files,
resolved from the page's folder.
Reading the include at request time would fail on Vercel: Turbopack's
trace leaves the file out, and outputFileTracingIncludes doesn't apply
to this route (a control file never reached its trace either). The
route is prerendered at build time instead, like llms.txt, and the
unused tracing entry goes.
Refs UI-2
npx skills add Intentface/intentface-ui installs it. SKILL.md holds the
rules agents get wrong without it: the headless model, how props, data
attributes and CSS variables carry state, the chat structure and
lifecycle, keys and accessibility. references/hooks.md lists each
primitive's hooks with where and when they apply, and
references/patterns.md has examples that carry only the classes the
behavior needs. The full API stays in the docs.
Refs UI-2
The audit now fails when a skill under skills/ names an entry point,
part, data attribute, CSS variable or docs page the package doesn't
have, or passes a part a prop it doesn't take in JSX. Props are checked
only in JSX, because prose can't say which part a bare name belongs to.
Resolving every namespace for the skill also puts the Shell, Nav and
Tabs pages under the page check, which they already pass. AskUser has
no page yet.
Refs UI-2
A variable the skill sets itself, as in [--chat-top-inset:1rem], is the
app's and passes. A name followed by "(" is a CSS function, such as
Tailwind's --spacing(), not a variable.
The skill now says what each part renders and what the app sets on it,
how to animate each primitive, how to leave a gap above a landed turn,
and how to keep overlays off the scrollbar. Before building, the agent
offers the options the request left open, each with its default.
…les on demand
A review against the package source found claims that would break what
agents build: attachments described as off by default, a key-claiming
method that only covers Escape, tabs that keep one instance across
switches, four of the seven AI SDK tool states, and a --panel-height
fallback that collapses open panels. Each now matches the package.
SKILL.md drops from about 5,250 words to 4,300. Attachments, ask-user,
the app shell and generative UI move to their own references, read when
that option is on. hooks.md becomes state.md, so "hook" means only a
React hook, and the landing gap goes by one name throughout.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The PR adds static generation and include expansion for Markdown documentation pages, updates composer size-property mappings, and adds an intentface-ui skill with reference guides and an audit for skill and primitive documentation.
Changes: Markdown Documentation Generation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Static page generation and Markdown expansion app/docs-markdown/[...slug]/route.ts, lib/docs/expand-includes.ts, next.config.ts
The route generates static parameters from documentation pages and expands included files before demos. The configuration removes the documentation content tracing entry for this route.
The size tracker uses explicit property names for root and container dimensions. The changeset declares a patch release with the note “size literal names.”
Intentface UI Skill Documentation and Audit
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Skill setup and implementation guidance skills/intentface-ui/SKILL.md, skills/intentface-ui/agents/openai.yaml
The guide covers package entry points, setup, styling, thread layout, message lifecycle, composer behavior, accessibility, and verification. Agent metadata describes the skill.
Chat patterns and submission flows skills/intentface-ui/references/ask-user.md, skills/intentface-ui/references/attachments.md, skills/intentface-ui/references/patterns.md
The references document ask-user tool submissions, attachment conversion and failure handling, and chat, message, composer, and steps-panel patterns.
The reference documents version pinning, data-based rendering, catalog schemas, validator requirements, and tool history conversion.
Primitive and skill documentation audit scripts/audit-docs.mjs
The audit checks primitive pages and skill Markdown for package entry points, parts, JSX props, data attributes, CSS variables, and documentation links. It reports findings and exits with status 1 when findings exist.
Intentface/intentface-ui#109: Adds the composer size tracker and CSS variables that this PR updates to use literal property names.
Intentface/intentface-ui#115: Clarifies that Composer clears the draft before onSubmit, a behavior used in the attachment example’s conversion-failure handling.
The skill can give conflicting guidance for older package versions and pair a failed message with a new attachment. Resolve these risks before merging.

`text.matchAll` so it captures the complete package entry point and rejects
invalid suffixes such as `composer2`. Require a valid boundary after the
entry-point name before checking it against `entryPoints`.
- Around line 204-205: Update CODE_BLOCK in the Markdown fence parsing used by
the JSX prop audit to capture fences of any length and close each block only
with a fence using the same character and at least the opening fence’s length.
Ensure JSX props inside longer-fenced examples are still extracted and checked.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/ask-user.md:
- Line 50: Update the `part` selection so it finds a `tool-askUser` part whose
state is `input-available`, rather than selecting the first `tool-askUser` part
regardless of state. This lets the composer collect answers for remaining tool
calls while leaving completed parts unchanged.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/attachments.md:
- Around line 24-27: Update the FileReader promise so read errors and aborts
reject instead of leaving it pending; preserve the successful resolution through
reader.onload. This lets Promise.all and onSubmit complete their failure and
cleanup paths.
- Line 34: Update the attachments example around handleSubmit so sendMessage is
defined rather than referenced as an undeclared value; show its setup from
useChat() or pass it into the handler, using the SDK’s returned value so the
TypeScript example compiles.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/motion.md:
- Line 7: Qualify the exit-wait rule in the “Animate the part’s own element”
guidance: exiting parts generally wait for their own element’s transition, but
document that Nav.List also waits for animations on its enclosing Nav.Group and
subtree, so a Nav.Group-level transition is supported.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/patterns.md:
- Line 3: Replace the incomplete phrase “the app’s” in the design-system
guidance with a complete phrase that preserves the instruction to use the app’s
design system for colors, spacing, radii, typography, and timing.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/shell.md:
- Around line 28-29: Update the Shell example around Shell.Sidebar and
Shell.Trigger to provide a way to reopen the sidebar when it is collapsed: add
and style a Shell.Hotspot, or show a shortcut that calls the store’s toggle.
Keep the existing collapse behavior intact.
- Line 2: Update the positioning guidance in the shell reference to limit
“position nothing” to Shell and Nav; clarify that Tabs.Positioner placement is
managed by the package and its position, left, and top values should not be
overridden.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/state.md:
- Line 16: Update useThreadInsets to remove --thread-overlay-bottom-height when
measureDockInset returns null, while preserving its existing update behavior
when a dock is present. Keep the state.md lifetime description accurate to match
the property’s actual lifecycle.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/SKILL.md:
- Line 224: Update the `Attachments.Remove` example in the bare-controls table
to pass a string value explicitly, such as `filename={item.filename}`, instead
of using the `filename` prop shorthand. Keep the example focused on providing
the filename that distinguishes the item.

The audit matches the docs site with an escaped regex literal, and reads
an entry point to its end, so a stale name such as composer2 fails. The
ask-user example asks every waiting askUser call in turn, the attachment
example rejects a failed read, and the shell example can reopen a
collapsed sidebar. The bottom inset's lifetime, Nav.List's exit wait and
what Tabs positions now match the package.

The skill still taught Thread.Overlay and --thread-overlay-bottom-height,
which 0.8.0 removed. Thread now publishes --thread-inset-bottom and
--thread-turn-min-height and the app applies the layout, so the rules,
examples and tables say that. It also covers the --thread-scroll timing,
data-scrolling and scrollToMessage from #90, and the attachments example
declares sendMessage from useChat().

Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/attachments.md:
- Line 42: Ensure attachment conversion in the sendMessage flow preserves
submission order: prevent additional submits while data.files is being converted
or queue submissions so each reaches sendMessage in order. Do not rely on
Composer.Root to set isSubmitting automatically.
- Line 40: Update handleSubmit to catch fetch or FileReader conversion failures,
show a user-visible error, and preserve the submitted message text so the user
can reattach files and retry; do not let these failures silently reject after
the composer clears the draft.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/motion.md:
- Line 7: Update the `Nav.List` guidance to note that it waits for all
animations in the `Nav.Group` subtree, so infinite animations on rows or
triggers can prevent closing and leave collapsed rows keyboard-navigable. Tell
authors to remove or stop infinite animations when the group closes.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/references/patterns.md:
- Line 26: Add an accessible name to each Composer.Textarea by providing an
aria-label or aria-labelledby; do not rely on Composer.Placeholder, which is
hidden from assistive technology.
- Line 24: Update both Composer.Root examples to prevent files from being
submitted invisibly: mount Composer.Attachments with maxFiles set to zero for
attachment-free examples, or render and handle attachments explicitly so users
can review and remove them.
- Line 143: Update the Steps pattern around Steps.Label to expose each tool
call’s status as accessible text, so screen readers can distinguish waiting,
failed, and completed calls. Use Steps.Status or an established equivalent,
deriving the text from the call’s existing status.
- Line 178: Update the `useChat()` usage in `Transcript` so it shares the parent
composer’s chat state and actions, either by passing them into `Transcript` or
by supplying both hooks with the same `Chat` instance. Do not create an
independent chat instance for the transcript.
- Line 120: Update the ordering claim in the example around getSegmentedParts to
clarify that it preserves the order of included parts, including reasoning,
static tool calls, and text, but omits dynamic-tool parts. State that
dynamic-tool parts should be rendered from message.parts in their original order
with the other parts.
Review comments at @skills/intentface-ui/SKILL.md:
- Line 126: Update the “Jump to a message” guidance to put data-message-id on
each message row using that message’s ID, rather than on a turn using turn.key;
preserve the existing Thread.Viewport scroll-padding guidance.
- Line 146: Update the “Segment the parts” guidance for getSegmentedParts to
explain that skipped parts such as dynamic-tool must retain their original
positions relative to rendered segments; direct readers to use a single-pass
renderer or segmentation that preserves skipped parts, rather than rendering
them separately after segmentation.
- Line 50: Update the primitive-documentation instruction to require using
documentation matching the version installed by the app, especially when an
upgrade is declined. Keep the Props and Attributes tables and inlined demo
source as the source of valid names, but consult the installed version’s docs so
version-specific API changes are not applied to older installations.
- Line 226: Update the speaker-identity guidance for Message.Root to require a
visually hidden text label identifying the speaker; do not recommend placing an
aria-label on its generic div. Preserve the existing data-role guidance unless
it conflicts with this accessible text-label requirement.

Composer.Placeholder renders inside an aria-hidden overlay, so its

- Make Transcript generic over the message type, so a chat with typed

53-53: Data Integrity & Integration
Check chip-only drafts before restoring text.
If the new draft contains only a chip, getText() returns an empty string and setText() replaces the chip. getPlainText in packages/ui/src/composer/segments.ts excludes chips. Verify the guard against a chip-only draft. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
53-53: Data Integrity & Integration
Check drafts during IME composition.
If conversion fails during an IME composition in an empty editor, getText() can still be empty. setText() then replaces the uncommitted composition. Inspect handleInput and setTextContent in packages/ui/src/composer/use-composer-editor.tsx and verify this failure path. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
53-53: Data Integrity & Integration
Retain the failed message when a new draft exists.
If the user has typed a new draft, the guard discards data.text. The failed message was cleared before onSubmit, and conversion failed before sendMessage, so the user cannot recover it from this example. Verify that both drafts remain recoverable. See packages/ui/src/composer/store.ts:605-639.

Why
Coding agents building with
@intentface/uimiss what the package hides: the state props, data attributes and CSS variables that carry each part's state, the build order the thread depends on, and the traps that break landing and auto-follow. This adds a skill they install withnpx skills add Intentface/intentface-ui, so they build working, polished chats in the app's own design system. Part of UI-2.What changed
skills/intentface-ui/SKILL.mdholds the rules:It links to the docs instead of copying the API.
references/holds the detail:state.md(each prop, attribute and variable, with the element it sits on and when it's present),styling.md(what the package sets and what the app sets) andmotion.md.patterns.mdhas the worked examples, which carry no visual style of their own.attachments.md,ask-user.md,shell.mdandgenerative.mdhold the rules for the options that are off by default. The agent reads them only when that option is on.scripts/audit-docs.mjsnow covers all 11 namespaces and the skill.
/docs-markdownexpands<include>tags and is prerendered. The changelog page linked from the skill served a raw<include>tag, and Turbopack ignored the file-tracing include the route relied on.Blast Radius
No package API changes.
/docs-markdownnow serves only prerendered pages, so an unknown slug returns 404 instead of rendering on request.#107 has to update the skill. It removes
Thread.Overlay,--thread-overlay-bottom-height,--thread-turn-min-heightanddata-thread-overlay, which the skill teaches, and the audit fails until the Thread rules use the new names. The six package bugs from the review are filed as UI-80 to UI-85. The skill describes today's behavior. Each issue names the skill rows to update when it's fixed, because the audit checks names, not behavior.
Verification
scripts/audit-docs.mjs, Biome andtscpass. Every example in the references type-checks against the package source and the installedai,@ai-sdk/react,next,zodandlucide-react.askUserquestion and an error. Each round's failures became rules: the placeholder's position, the landing gap, overlays covering the scrollbar, and motion.Thread.Viewport, and the thread variables. WebKit and Firefox were not checked.npx skills addwas not run, because npm's minimum release age blocked the pinned CLI version.Summary by CodeRabbit
