refactor(webapp): group pages and components by domain, gate the client's shape, type and lint e2e - #365
Phase B of the webapp restructuring. Phase A (#359–#364) split the large files and left every import path where it was. This PR regroups pages/ and components/ by domain, and so changes import paths, on purpose and with no compatibility re-exports left at the old paths. It also adds a CI gate on the client's file sizes, and puts webapp/e2e/ under a tsconfig and under biome for the first time. Behaviour is unchanged.
Commits
refactor(webapp): move the pages and components into folders by domain: git mv only, 72 files, 0 lines changed.
refactor(webapp): repoint the imports at the pages' and components' new homes: specifiers only, then biome's sort of the import statements.
ci(webapp): hold the client's files to the restructuring's size limits: scripts/check-webapp-layout.sh and its step in CI (Web).
test(webapp): type-check the end-to-end tests: e2e/tsconfig.json, @types/node, the scripts and the CI step, and the one type error this found.
test(webapp): lint and format the end-to-end tests with biome: e2e/** added to biome's files, then biome's own output.
docs(webapp): describe the client's tree by domain and the limits ci holds it to: CLAUDE.md and CONTRIBUTING.md.
ci(webapp): give the allowlisted spec's length as biome left it: fixes a count in the allowlist comment. Commit 5's message says 1,104 lines; after biome's second pass the file has 1,102.
build(webapp): keep node's types out of the browser code's type-check: three tsconfigs, one per place the code runs (see below).
test(webapp): collect unit tests written as .tsx: vitest's include now takes *.test.tsx too.
How things are placed
Pages follow the route file that mounts them. Each app/routes/<area>.tsx now imports its screens from pages/<area>/ and from nowhere else, so you can check any placement against the route tree. In four places this differs from the brief's examples, because the route files say otherwise:
playlists-page goes in library/, since routes/library.tsx mounts /playlists. random-page goes in listen/, since routes/listen.tsx mounts /random.
shares-page, upload-page and admin-page/ go in settings/. All three are sections of Settings (/settings/shares, /settings/upload, /settings/admin), and their old addresses are redirects declared in routes/settings.tsx. Administration is not a separate area. It is a Settings section with a role check in beforeLoad.
The folder is called pages/root/, not pages/public/. It holds what routes/root.tsx mounts, and /authorize sits under the session gate (authedRoute), so "public" would be wrong for it.
track-editor moves from components/ to pages/library/. It exports TrackEditorPage, routes/library.tsx mounts it at /tracks/$trackId/edit, and nothing else imports it. It was a page filed as a component.
File names are kept, including the -page suffix. Basenames stay unique across the tree, which helps search and editor tabs, and the moves stay pure renames.
Components are filed by what they serve. Placements that are not obvious:
play-set-actions goes in catalog/, not playlists/. It plays or queues an arbitrary set of songs from a page header (history, mix, random), and each of those pages draws the same songs with song-table. It does nothing with playlists.
folder-picker goes in catalog/, not layout/. It is the dialog for picking a place in the library's filed-folder tree (RFC-012), opened from the track menu and the folders page. It belongs to the catalogue, not to the page frame.
theme-picker goes in layout/. It is the only appearance control, the themes it applies dress the whole frame, and a folder holding one file would be noise.
filter-field goes in layout/. It is a header control that the browse pages share.
canvas-panel goes in artwork/, next to canvas. It places a track's loop and is mounted by the track editor.
The script is POSIX sh and follows check-rust-layout.sh's structure (limits, ALLOWLIST, ::error annotations). CI (Web) runs it first, from the repository root (working-directory: .), and the script's path is added to the workflow's paths: filters. Limits:
a .ts/.tsx file under webapp/src/ that is not a test: 600 lines
a .css file under webapp/src/: 800
a *.test.ts(x) file under webapp/src/: 1,000
a .ts file under webapp/e2e/: 1,000
On this tree the gate passes: Webapp layout: every file within its limit. The largest files under each limit are smart-playlists.tsx at 589, session.test.ts at 601 (within the test limit), styles/shell.css at 523, and e2e/fixtures/api.ts at 849.
I also ran it against temporary files, removed afterwards:
::error file=webapp/src/lib/oversized-probe.test.ts::webapp/src/lib/oversized-probe.test.ts has 1001 lines; the limit is 1000.
::error file=webapp/src/lib/oversized-probe.ts::webapp/src/lib/oversized-probe.ts has 601 lines; the limit is 600.
::error file=webapp/src/lib/sized-probe.ts::webapp/src/lib/sized-probe.ts has 800 lines; the limit is 600.
::error file=webapp/src/styles/oversized-probe.css::webapp/src/styles/oversized-probe.css has 801 lines; the limit is 800.
::error file=webapp/e2e/fixtures/oversized-probe.ts::webapp/e2e/fixtures/oversized-probe.ts has 1001 lines; the limit is 1000.
The script exited 1. In the same run, a .test.tsx of exactly 1,000 lines passed. A copy of the script with oversized-probe.ts in its allowlist passed too.
Allowlist: one entry, webapp/e2e/smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts. It had 965 lines until biome formatted e2e/ for the first time, and 1,102 afterwards, from layout changes alone. The natural split is smart playlists | podcasts, but both halves share one mock whose state lives in module-level lets (smart, channels, bookmarkGate, …) that the tests reassign about 55 times. A binding imported from another module cannot be reassigned, so splitting the file means moving that state onto an object (as e2e/fixtures/state.ts does for the other specs) and rewriting every read and write of it. That changes the tests, so it belongs in its own PR. The script's comment says this and asks for the entry to be removed when that PR lands.
Typing and linting e2e/
webapp/e2e/tsconfig.json extends the client's tsconfig, adds "types": ["node"] and includes **/*.ts plus ../playwright.config.ts. It checks all 37 e2e files, the three src/styles/design-tokens/*.ts that themes.spec.ts imports, and the Playwright config.
@types/node is a new devDependency, at ^26.6.5. The mocks use Buffer.
biome's files.includes gains e2e/**.
Three tsconfigs, one per place the code runs
Installing @types/node would have let src/ use Buffer and process with no error. vite.config.ts sat in the app's tsconfig, and vite's types carry /// <reference types="node" />, which until now pointed at nothing. Commit 8 closes that:
tsconfig.json covers src/ only, with an explicit "types": ["vite/client"]: the DOM libs and Vite's client types, and no Node types.
tsconfig.node.json (new) covers vite.config.ts and vitest.config.ts, with lib: ["ES2022"] and types: ["node"]. Before this, nothing checked vitest.config.ts.
e2e/tsconfig.json is unchanged: Node and Playwright types.
bun run typecheck runs all three (tsc --noEmit && tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.node.json && tsc --noEmit -p e2e), and typecheck:node and typecheck:e2e run one each. CI (Web) runs those two after the build, whose tsc covers src/.
Proof, with temporary files I then removed:
export const x: Buffer | undefined = undefined; in src/lib/node-probe.ts makes bun run typecheck fail with src/lib/node-probe.ts(1,17): error TS2591: Cannot find name 'Buffer' (exit 1).
The same line in e2e/fixtures/node-probe.ts, with the src/ probe gone, passes (exit 0).
A probe inside a src/ test file, which imports vitest and through it vite's types, also fails, for both Buffer and process. So the Node types don't leak in through vitest either.
The inversion: the same src/ probe against the previous branch head's tsconfig.json passes (exit 0). That is the regression commit 8 removes.
vitest collects .tsx tests
vitest.config.ts now has include: ["src/**/*.test.{ts,tsx}"]. The count is unchanged at 41 files and 327 tests, because no .test.tsx exists yet. I then added a throwaway src/x.test.tsx with one JSX test. With the new glob it ran (42 files, 328 tests); with the old src/**/*.test.ts it was silently skipped (41 files, 327 tests). The file is removed.
What these surfaced, and each fix:
Type error, e2e/scrobbling.spec.ts:144.freshDestinations() in e2e/fixtures/catalogue.ts was typed by inference, which made unavailable required on Last.fm's row. The test that declares Last.fm usable leaves it out. Fix: the function now returns a declared Destination[] (provider: Recipient; destination: string; available: boolean; unavailable?: string), which is the wire shape. Neither the test nor the rows changed. Without the fix, tsc -p e2e fails with exactly this error. With it, it passes.
biome useImportType (fixtures/folders.ts, fixtures/state.ts): imports used only in typeof are now marked type. This is biome's safe fix.
biome organizeImports (fixtures/api.ts, radio.spec.ts): the statements are re-sorted. Also biome's own fix.
biome useDomNodeTextContent (artist.spec.ts, two places): the rule mistakes Playwright's Locator.innerText() for the DOM property. Its unsafe fix would change what the assertion message quotes, so I added two biome-ignore comments with that reason instead.
Formatting: biome formatted 27 more files. That is layout only (whitespace, line breaks, double quotes, trailing commas). It also split two statements that sat on one line in radio.spec.ts.
Proof that the e2e changes in commit 5 are layout plus the items above: I compared every changed file with its parent after removing whitespace, commas, semicolons and parentheses. 27 files compare equal. The six that don't are the ones listed in items 2–4, plus scrobbling.spec.ts, where the only difference is single quotes becoming double quotes.
Proof of no behaviour change
Imports only. A throwaway script took each of the 79 .ts/.tsx files commit 2 touched, replaced every module specifier (and the hash worker's new URL(…)) with a placeholder, sorted the import statements, and compared the result with the parent. All 79 files compare equal. As a check that the script can fail, I renamed one export const in routes/root.tsx; the script flagged that file, and I then reverted the rename.
The worker URL.upload-page.tsx builds its hash worker from new URL("../lib/hash-worker.ts", import.meta.url), a string tsc never reads. It is now ../../lib/hash-worker.ts. The build still emits hash-worker-Dhw3I8_T.js, byte-identical to main's.
CSS bundle:index-ac4mmiW1.css, byte-identical to main's (cmp).
JS bundle: 343 modules transformed, the same count as main. I also built main and this branch without minification and diffed them module by module (on the // src/… markers, with old paths mapped to new ones). All 264 regions are present on both sides. The module order changed, because biome re-sorted the import statements. The only code differences are rolldown swapping its collision suffixes: STORAGE_KEY/STORAGE_KEY$1 between state/library-scope.tsx and state/preferences.tsx, and LABELS/LABELS$1 between track-editor.tsx and artist-image-controls.tsx. In that unminified build the worker's hashed file name also differs, because the main build read node_modules through a junction and recorded absolute paths. In the real, minified build the worker file is identical.

Playwright is left to CI. The specs were listed locally, never run, so CI's run on this PR is the first time the reformatted specs and the moved code execute in a browser.
Noticed, not changed
Three dated documents still name old paths: docs/metadata-enrichment-plan.md:222 (pages/artist-page.tsx), docs/rfcs/RFC-015-artist-credit-splitting.md:440 (components/track-editor.tsx) and docs/rfcs/RFC-016-audio-quality-analysis.md:38 (components/file-quality.tsx). They are records of their time and are left as written.
.github/labeler.yml globs webapp/src/pages/** and webapp/src/components/**, which still match the new folders.
.gitattributes has no *.sh rule. The new script is stored with LF, but check-rust-layout.sh is checked out with CRLF on Windows under core.autocrlf.
smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts is the gate's only exception (see above). Splitting it is the follow-up.

scripts/check-webapp-layout.sh fails a code file under webapp/src past 600
lines, a stylesheet past 800, and a unit test or anything under webapp/e2e
past 1,000, the way check-rust-layout.sh holds the server. CI (Web) runs it
first, from the repository root.

No tsconfig covered webapp/e2e/, so a spec could disagree with its own
fixtures and nothing said so. e2e/tsconfig.json extends the client's options
with the Node types the mocks need (Buffer), and takes playwright.config.ts
with it; `bun run typecheck` now checks both, and CI (Web) runs
`typecheck:e2e` beside the build's check of src/.
The one error it found: freshDestinations() was typed by inference, which
made `unavailable` required on Last.fm's row, and the test declaring Last.fm
usable leaves it out. The row now has its wire type, `unavailable`
optional.

biome.json named src/ and the root files only, so webapp/e2e/ had never been
formatted or linted. Including it is mostly layout, written by biome itself.
What is not: the statements biome sorts and marks type-only (fixtures/api.ts,
fixtures/folders.ts, fixtures/state.ts, radio.spec.ts), quotes made double
(scrobbling.spec.ts), and two suppressions in artist.spec.ts, where the rule
against innerText mistakes a Playwright locator's innerText() for the DOM
property.
The layout takes smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts from 965 lines to
1,104; the layout gate allows it, with why, until its shared mock state is
moved onto an object and the spec split.

CLAUDE.md said pages/ was one screen per file and styles/ the sheet and

Installing @types/node for e2e/ let src/ name Buffer and process without
an error: vite.config.ts sat in the app's tsconfig, and vite's types carry a
reference to node's that now resolved. tsconfig.json is the browser code
alone, with an explicit types list (vite/client); tsconfig.node.json takes
vite.config.ts and vitest.config.ts, which nothing checked before; e2e/ keeps
node's types. `bun run typecheck` runs all three, and CI (Web) runs the
two the build does not.

vitest included src/**/*.test.ts only, so a component test written with
JSX would never have run, and the suite would have passed over it. The
docs say where a test goes and which tsconfig checks what.

The gate:
scripts/check-webapp-layout.shThe script is POSIX sh and follows
check-rust-layout.sh's structure (limits,ALLOWLIST,::errorannotations). CI (Web) runs it first, from the repository root (working-directory: .), and the script's path is added to the workflow'spaths:filters. Limits:.ts/.tsxfile underwebapp/src/that is not a test: 600 lines.cssfile underwebapp/src/: 800*.test.ts(x)file underwebapp/src/: 1,000.tsfile underwebapp/e2e/: 1,000On this tree the gate passes:
Webapp layout: every file within its limit. The largest files under each limit aresmart-playlists.tsxat 589,session.test.tsat 601 (within the test limit),styles/shell.cssat 523, ande2e/fixtures/api.tsat 849.I also ran it against temporary files, removed afterwards:
The script exited 1. In the same run, a
.test.tsxof exactly 1,000 lines passed. A copy of the script withoversized-probe.tsin its allowlist passed too.Allowlist: one entry,
webapp/e2e/smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts. It had 965 lines until biome formattede2e/for the first time, and 1,102 afterwards, from layout changes alone. The natural split is smart playlists | podcasts, but both halves share one mock whose state lives in module-levellets (smart, channels, bookmarkGate, …) that the tests reassign about 55 times. A binding imported from another module cannot be reassigned, so splitting the file means moving that state onto an object (ase2e/fixtures/state.tsdoes for the other specs) and rewriting every read and write of it. That changes the tests, so it belongs in its own PR. The script's comment says this and asks for the entry to be removed when that PR lands.Typing and linting
e2e/webapp/e2e/tsconfig.jsonextends the client's tsconfig, adds"types": ["node"]and includes**/*.tsplus../playwright.config.ts. It checks all 37 e2e files, the threesrc/styles/design-tokens/*.tsthatthemes.spec.tsimports, and the Playwright config.@types/nodeis a new devDependency, at^26.6.5. Installing
@types/nodewould have letsrc/useBufferandprocesswith no error.vite.config.tssat in the app's tsconfig, and vite's types carry/// <reference types="node" />, which until now pointed at nothing. Commit 8 closes that:tsconfig.jsoncoverssrc/only, with an explicit"types": ["vite/client"]: the DOM libs and Vite's client types, and no Node types.tsconfig.node.json(new) coversvite.config.tsandvitest.config.ts, withlib: ["ES2022"]andtypes: ["node"]. Before this, nothing checkedvitest.config.ts.e2e/tsconfig.jsonis unchanged: Node and Playwright types.bun run typecheckruns all three (tsc --noEmit && tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.node.json && tsc --noEmit -p e2e), andtypecheck:nodeandtypecheck:e2erun one each. CI (Web) runs those two after the build, whosetsccoverssrc/.Proof, with temporary files I then removed:

So the Node types don't leak in through vitest either.src/probe against the previous branch head'stsconfig.jsonpasses (exit 0). That is the regression commit 8 removes.vitest collects
.tsxtestsvitest.config.tsnow hasinclude: ["src/**/*.test.{ts,tsx}"]. The count is unchanged at 41 files and 327 tests, because no.test.tsxexists yet. I then added a throwawaysrc/x.test.tsxwith one JSX test. With the new glob it ran (42 files, 328 tests); with the oldsrc/**/*.test.tsit was silently skipped (41 files, 327 tests). The file is removed. What these surfaced, and each fix:
e2e/scrobbling.spec.ts:144.freshDestinations()ine2e/fixtures/catalogue.tswas typed by inference, which madeunavailablerequired on Last.fm's row. The test that declares Last.fm usable leaves it out. Fix: the function now returns a declaredDestination[](provider: Recipient; destination: string; available: boolean; unavailable?: string), which is the wire shape. Neither the test nor the rows changed. Without the fix,tsc -p e2efails with exactly this error. With it, it passes.useImportType(fixtures/folders.ts,fixtures/state.ts): imports used only intypeofare now markedtype. This is biome's safe fix.organizeImports(fixtures/api.ts,radio.spec.ts): the statements are re-sorted. Also biome's own fix.useDomNodeTextContent(artist.spec.ts, two places): the rule mistakes Playwright'sLocator.innerText()for the DOM property. Its unsafe fix would change what the assertion message quotes, so I added twobiome-ignorecomments with that reason instead.radio.spec.ts.Proof that the e2e changes in commit 5 are layout plus the items above: I compared every changed file with its parent after removing whitespace, commas, semicolons and parentheses. 27 files compare equal. The six that don't are the ones listed in items 2–4, plus
scrobbling.spec.ts, where the only difference is single quotes becoming double quotes.Proof of no behaviour change
.ts/.tsxfiles commit 2 touched, replaced every module specifier (and the hash worker'snew URL(…)) with a placeholder, sorted the import statements, and compared the result with the parent. All 79 files compare equal. As a check that the script can fail, I renamed oneexport constinroutes/root.tsx; the script flagged that file, and I then reverted the rename.upload-page.tsxbuilds its hash worker fromnew URL("../lib/hash-worker.ts", import.meta.url), a stringtscnever reads. It is now../../lib/hash-worker.ts. The build still emitshash-worker-Dhw3I8_T.js, byte-identical to main's.index-ac4mmiW1.css, byte-identical to main's (cmp).// src/…markers, with old paths mapped to new ones). All 264 regions are present on both sides. The module order changed, because biome re-sorted the import statements. The only code differences are rolldown swapping its collision suffixes:STORAGE_KEY/STORAGE_KEY$1betweenstate/library-scope.tsxandstate/preferences.tsx, andLABELS/LABELS$1betweentrack-editor.tsxandartist-image-controls.tsx. In that unminified build the worker's hashed file name also differs, because the main build readnode_modulesthrough a junction and recorded absolute paths. In the real, minified build the worker file is identical.Counts and checks (in
