refactor(src): group the root modules by domain and gate the tree's shape in CI - #357
Phase B of the backend restructuring. Phase A (#351–#355) split the large files without moving anything; this regroups the thirty-five flat modules at the root of src/ into domain directories, takes the last thirty inline test modules out of the code, splits the last oversized source file and the ten integration targets still past 1,000 lines, and adds a CI gate so the tree stays this way.
Module paths change on purpose (crate::sign_in is now crate::auth::sign_in, waveflow_server::database::… is waveflow_server::storage::database::…). Every use, path and doc link in src/, tests/ and main.rs follows; there is no compatibility re-export at the old root paths. No logic changes.
lib.rs now declares thirteen modules instead of thirty-eight: api, app, auth, cli, config, http, library, media, quality, remote, services, storage, subsonic (plus the app re-exports, unchanged). Each new parent has a mod.rs holding a //! saying what the domain holds and its pub mod lines; every child kept the pub it had at the root.
Deviations from the brief, each deliberate:
lyrics stays in library/. Most of it is the LRC and TTML parsers the scanner reads sidecars and embedded tags with; the read models (LyricsList, StructuredLyrics) are a small part. The services and both surfaces import it from there.
authentication, webui and migration_backup stay files (auth/authentication.rs, http/webui.rs, storage/migration_backup.rs): they have no unit tests, so the convention below gives them no directory.
The ten integration targets past 1,000 lines are split too (below). The brief expected the gate's allowlist to need only compatibility.rs; on main, canvas, sync, cli, subsonic_browse, discovery, quality, subsonic_fields, migrations, credits and service were 1,028 to 1,489 lines, and allowlisting ten files would have left the gate holding nothing.
http/reference/mod.rs includes the Scalar bundle from ../../../assets/: include_bytes! is relative to the file, which is two directories deeper.
Integration targets split (target names unchanged, still twenty-three)
Same shape as #355: main.rs keeps the //!, the imports, #[path = "../support/mod.rs"] mod support;, the fixtures more than one file calls and the mod lines; each file holds one subject and the helpers only it calls, behind use super::*;. Items moved verbatim and in order. A line-multiset check (trimmed, non-blank lines of each old file against its directory) lost nothing; the only additions are the //! headers, use super::*; and the mod lines.

Engine's fields, Source's fields, Client, Verdict, and schedule/deezer/bounded widen to pub(super) so the handle beside them can reach them. Nothing else changed visibility. One doc link written as a full path ([Enrichment::idle](super::Enrichment::idle)), wording unchanged.

Unit tests: one convention for the crate
A module with unit tests is a directory: the code in foo/mod.rs, which declares #[cfg(test)] mod tests;, and the tests in foo/tests.rs. Never a foo.rs with a foo/ beside it — the crate had none, and phase A used mod.rs throughout. The thirty inline modules moved verbatim, dedented one level, with the declaration left where the block stood; lines that start inside a multi-line string literal kept their bytes (they are listed by the extraction script; lyrics, podcast, playlist_file and security_headers have them). Put back together, each mod.rs + tests.rs equals the old file once whitespace is ignored; rustfmt reflowed two signatures the shallower indentation let fit on one line. grep -rn "mod tests {" src finds nothing.
The CI gate
scripts/check-rust-layout.sh (POSIX sh, coreutils only), run as the first step of the Linux job in ci-rust.yml, fails when:
a .rs under src/ other than tests.rs passes 800 lines;
a tests.rs under src/, or any .rs under tests/, passes 1,000;
any file under src/ contains mod tests { (whitespace-tolerant).
Each failure is a GitHub ::error file=…:: annotation. The allowlist lives in the script with its reason: tests/subsonic_contract/compatibility.rs, one 1,411-line test (the frozen v2.0-beta compatibility walk) that cannot be cut without changing what it proves. The script is also added to the workflow's paths triggers.
A cargo doc --no-deps --all-features step with RUSTDOCFLAGS: -D warnings follows cargo check. Fixing what it found:
AlbumOrder, DomainServices::catalog_snapshot, DomainServices::artist_page (twice), ShareClear, and EVALUATE (module doc and four in rules.rs) are now linked by full path ([`X`](crate::services::…)); wording unchanged.
tests::the_four_spellings_of_a_destination_agree (in services/scrobbling) names a #[cfg(test)] function, which no doc build can resolve: its brackets are dropped, its words kept.
Eight links from public docs to private items (EXPANDED_LINE_COST, scanner::MAX_SCOPE_FOLDERS, reconcile, artist_credit_clause!, Self::local_neighbours, Self::due_scrobbles, song_scope!, Self::writer_guard) are correct and resolve with --document-private-items, but no path makes a private item public. lib.rs carries #![allow(rustdoc::private_intra_doc_links)] with a comment saying why, so the gate fails on a link that resolves nowhere and not on a link to an internal item.
Other path fixes
Comments naming a moved file now name its new home: src/config.rs (→ src/config/, src/config/access.rs), src/database.rs (→ src/storage/database/tests.rs), src/podcast.rs, src/scrobblers/lastfm.rs, catalog.rs, tests/quality.rs (→ tests/quality/analysis.rs), tests/credits.rs, tests/cli.rs (→ tests/cli/key.rs, tests/cli/scrobbling.rs), and the stale tests/scrobbling.rs in src/config/tests.rs noted by phase A′ (→ tests/scrobbling/). Two comments in tests/migrations/ that said "above" of something now in a sibling file name the file instead.
One doc comment sat on the wrong test on main: the request-id doc was stacked above the refused-boot doc in tests/service.rs, and the split first carried it into lifecycle.rs. It now heads a_caller_cannot_name_its_own_request in probes.rs, word for word (bac600d, raised by CodeRabbit).
.github/labeler.yml: the server scopes globbed src/http.rs, src/database.rs, src/scanner.rs and others that no longer exist (some since before phase A); they now glob src/api/**, src/storage/**, src/auth/**, src/library/** and so on.
Docs: CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md describe the tree by domain, the tests.rs convention, integration targets as directories with main.rs, the size limits and the doc gate; "twenty-three targets" kept. CLAUDE.md's paths for AppState, app(), the routes, pid, stream tickets, OAuth, webui, the SQL homes, config/ and services/quality/ are current. docs/operations.md and docs/privacy.md, which cite source files as their authority, follow. Dated documents (handoffs, M3/M4 records, the dated surveys, RFCs) keep the paths they were written against.
Test counts
cargo test --all-features -- --list | grep -c ': test$': 663 before, 663 after. 382 names are identical; the other 281 differ only by their module path (e.g. sign_in::tests::x → auth::sign_in::tests::x, a_split_lands_on_the_artists_the_parts_name → splits::a_split_lands_on_the_artists_the_parts_name). The multiset of bare test names is identical.
Checks run (locally, Windows, -j 2, own target dir)
cargo build with no webapp/dist — builds; build.rs and #[folder = "$OUT_DIR/webapp-dist/"] are untouched, so the placeholder (or a real dist) is embedded as before.
Inversion of the size gate
$ seq 1 801 | sed 's|^|// line |' > src/zz_oversized_probe.rs
$ printf '#[cfg(test)]\nmod tests {\n}\n' > src/zz_inline_probe.rs
$ seq 1 1001 | sed 's|^|// line |' > tests/zz_oversized_probe.rs
$ sh scripts/check-rust-layout.sh; echo "exit=$?"
::error file=src/zz_oversized_probe.rs::src/zz_oversized_probe.rs has 801 lines; the limit is 800.
::error file=tests/zz_oversized_probe.rs::tests/zz_oversized_probe.rs has 1001 lines; the limit is 1000.
::error file=src/zz_inline_probe.rs::inline test module; move it to a tests.rs beside the module: src/zz_inline_probe.rs:2:mod tests {
exit=1
And a src/zz_probe/tests.rs passes at 900 lines and fails at 1,001 (has 1001 lines; the limit is 1000, exit 1). With the probes removed, the script prints Rust layout: every file within its limit, no inline test module. and exits 0.
Log targets follow module paths.tracing names each event's target after its module, so a RUST_LOG directive naming an old path (waveflow_server::scanner=debug) no longer matches; it is now waveflow_server::library::scanner. Nothing in the repository sets one (the Dockerfile uses the crate-level waveflow_server=info), but an operator's own filter would need the new path.
cargo doc --document-private-items still finds seven unresolved links in docs the gate does not build (those of private items): DomainServices::create_own_api_token (api/access.rs), album_scope (services/projections.rs), COVER_TTL_MS (services/podcasts/mod.rs), quality_verdict_sql (services/quality/mod.rs), mix_pool (services/mixes/mod.rs), SmartSort::ALL (services/smart_playlists/statement.rs), listens_cte (services/statistics/mod.rs). Worth a follow-up if the gate should document private items.
mod tests; sits where the inline block stood, which in api/scrobbling/mod.rs is mid-file.
Multi-line string literals in the moved tests keep their original indentation, so a few continuation lines look over-indented relative to the code around them; their bytes are the test data.
The full-path EVALUATE links make five doc-comment lines in services/smart_playlists/ long; rustfmt does not wrap comments.
CONTRIBUTING.md's commit examples still cite /api/v1/playlists and a db scope from v1.

Renames only, so history follows each file: auth/, library/, remote/,
http/ and storage/ receive the flat modules, and media/ receives
replay_gain. A module that carries unit tests moves to foo/mod.rs, ready
for its tests to leave it. The tree compiles again with the next commit,
which declares the new parents and rewrites the paths.

lib.rs now names fourteen modules instead of thirty-nine. Each new parent
(auth, library, remote, http, storage) has a mod.rs saying what the domain
holds, and media declares replay_gain. Every crate:: and waveflow_server::
path, in src/ and tests/ alike, names the module's new home; the Scalar
bundle is included from its new depth. No compatibility re-export is left
at the root.

…ctories
Renames only: api/scrobbling, api/sync, api/web_session,
quality/bandwidth and the three scrobbler adapters become foo/mod.rs, so
their tests can sit beside them in foo/tests.rs.

…code
Every #[cfg(test)] mod tests { ... } left in src/ becomes foo/tests.rs,
declared where the block stood. Bodies are moved verbatim and dedented one
level; string literals that span lines keep their content byte for byte.
Two rustfmt reflows follow from the shallower indentation. No file under
src/ opens an inline test module any more.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
959 lines become four files under remote/enrichment/: model.rs (the
providers, outcomes and cached rows), handle.rs (Enrichment and its
Endpoints: building the engine, reading the cache, the Deezer portrait
search), engine.rs (the fills, their bound and the verdicts), and mod.rs
keeping the module doc, MAX_IN_FLIGHT and the Pace that lrclib shares.
Code moved verbatim; the engine's fields and three of its methods widen
to pub(super) for the handle beside it.

Seven comments cited src/config.rs, src/database.rs, src/podcast.rs,
src/scrobblers/lastfm.rs and catalog.rs, which are now directories under
config/, storage/, remote/; and one still cited tests/scrobbling.rs, the
target #355 turned into a directory.

AlbumOrder, DomainServices::catalog_snapshot, DomainServices::artist_page,
ShareClear and the smart playlists' EVALUATE are now linked by full path,
so no import is needed for a link. A link to a cfg(test) function cannot
resolve in a doc build and keeps its words without the brackets. Links to
private items are correct and resolve with --document-private-items;
lib.rs allows rustdoc::private_intra_doc_links and says why, so the gate
catches only a link that resolves nowhere.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
…to directories
Renames, plus what a move from tests/x.rs to tests/x/main.rs needs: the
shared support module is named by path, credits' include_str! climbs one
more level, and Cargo.toml points each [[test]] at its main.rs. The
targets, and the twenty-three of them, are unchanged.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
Each main.rs keeps the imports, the support module and the fixtures more
than one file uses; every other file takes one subject with the helpers
only it calls, behind use super::*. Items move verbatim and in order, and
no line was lost: the trimmed lines of each old file and its directory
differ only by the new //! headers, the use lines and the mod lines.
Comments that named a file now name its new home, and three that pointed
'above' at what moved to a sibling name it.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
scripts/check-rust-layout.sh fails when a source file under src/ passes
800 lines, a tests.rs under src/ or a file under tests/ passes 1,000, or
any file under src/ opens an inline mod tests block. Its one exception,
tests/subsonic_contract/compatibility.rs, is a single test that cannot be
split without changing it, and the script says so. A cargo doc step with
-D warnings fails on an intra-doc link that resolves nowhere.
The labeler's server scopes named files that no longer exist, some since
before this restructuring; they now glob the directories that hold them.

…limits
CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md and CONTRIBUTING.md now give src/ as it is filed:
app, cli, config; api and subsonic over services; auth, library,
storage, remote, http, media and quality. Every path they cited for a
moved module names its new home, unit tests are described as tests.rs
beside the module, and the limits and cargo doc gate CI enforces are
stated. operations.md and privacy.md, which cite source files as the
authority, follow; the dated handoffs, surveys and RFCs keep the paths
they were written against.

Walkthrough
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Tests, documentation et CI Cargo.toml, tests/*, src/*/tests.rs, scripts/check-rust-layout.sh, .github/workflows/ci-rust.yml, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, docs/*

On main the doc of a_caller_cannot_name_its_own_request sat stacked on
top of a_refused_boot_gives_the_database_back_before_it_returns, and the
split carried it into lifecycle.rs, a file away from its test. It now
heads the test it describes in probes.rs, word for word.

Phase B of the backend restructuring. Phase A (#351–#355) split the large files without moving anything; this regroups the thirty-five flat modules at the root of
src/into domain directories, takes the last thirty inline test modules out of the code, splits the last oversized source file and the ten integration targets still past 1,000 lines, and adds a CI gate so the tree stays this way.Module paths change on purpose (

A module with unit tests is a directory: the code in
foo/mod.rs, which declares#[cfg(test)] mod tests;, and the tests infoo/tests.rs. Never afoo.rswith afoo/beside it — the crate had none, and phase A usedmod.rsthroughout. The thirty inline modules moved verbatim, dedented one level, with the declaration left where the block stood; lines that start inside a multi-line string literal kept their bytes (they are listed by the extraction script;lyrics,podcast,playlist_fileandsecurity_headershave them). Put back together, eachmod.rs+tests.rsequals the old file once whitespace is ignored; rustfmt reflowed two signatures the shallower indentation let fit on one line.grep -rn "mod tests {" srcfinds nothing.The CI gate
scripts/check-rust-layout.sh(POSIX sh, coreutils only), run as the first step of the Linux job inci-rust.yml, fails when:.rsundersrc/other thantests.rspasses 800 lines;tests.rsundersrc/, or any.rsundertests/, passes 1,000;src/containsmod tests {(whitespace-tolerant).Each failure is a GitHub
::error file=…::annotation. The allowlist lives in the script with its reason:tests/subsonic_contract/compatibility.rs, one 1,411-line test (the frozen v2.0-beta compatibility walk) that cannot be cut without changing what it proves. The script is also added to the workflow'spathstriggers.A

CodeQL reports eight "new" alerts that are old ones at new paths. Seven hard-coded cryptographic values and one cleartext-logging finding, in
src/auth/security/andtests/canvas/; each is an alert already dismissed onmainat its old location (chore: wire dependabot + CodeQL + CodeRabbit + SECURITY.md #2, docs(m5): define reconciliation contract #108, feat(webapp): deliver studio-nocturne experience #109, ci(cache): bound the Actions cache instead of letting eviction pick #118 insrc/security.rs; chore: Bump rand from 0.8.7 to 0.10.2 #133, chore: Bump tokio-tungstenite from 0.29.0 to 0.30.0 #134, chore: Bump the npm-patch-and-minor group in /webapp with 5 updates #135, chore: bump the npm-patch-and-minor group in /webapp with 2 updates #175 intests/canvas.rs). The code is unchanged, but the alerts are keyed by path, so the CodeQL check fails until a maintainer dismisses them again. I have not touched the alerts.Log targets follow module paths.
tracingnames each event's target after its module, so aRUST_LOGdirective naming an old path (waveflow_server::scanner=debug) no longer matches; it is nowwaveflow_server::library::scanner. Nothing in the repository sets one (the Dockerfile uses the crate-levelwaveflow_server=info), but an operator's own filter would need the new path.cargo doc --document-private-itemsstill finds seven unresolved links in docs the gate does not build (those of private items):DomainServices::create_own_api_token(api/access.rs),album_scope(services/projections.rs),COVER_TTL_MS(services/podcasts/mod.rs),quality_verdict_sql(services/quality/mod.rs),mix_pool(services/mixes/mod.rs),SmartSort::ALL(services/smart_playlists/statement.rs),listens_cte(services/statistics/mod.rs). Worth a follow-up if the gate should document private items.A few comments in split targets say "this file" of something that is now the whole target (
tests/migrations/copies.rs"what this file already knows how to do",tests/cli/main.rs,tests/cli/scrobbling.rs); left as written, as refactor(tests): split the eleven largest integration targets into directories, one target each #355 did.mod tests;sits where the inline block stood, which inapi/scrobbling/mod.rsis mid-file.Multi-line string literals in the moved tests keep their original indentation, so a few continuation lines look over-indented relative to the code around them; their bytes are the test data.
