refactor(services): split the large services into directories and move their tests out - #354
Phase A of the backend restructuring, src/services/ only: every file there over 800 lines is split into a directory along its own seams, and every inline test module in src/services/ moves to a tests.rs beside its module. These are moves only. No function is renamed, no signature or SQL changes, no public path moves, and nothing under tests/ is edited.
How it is arranged
The first commit is the renames on their own (git mv foo.rs foo/mod.rs for the twenty modules that become directories), so git keeps their history. One commit per split follows.
The projection macros (song_select!, album_select!, artist_select! and the *_clause!/*_scope! helpers) move to services/projections.rs. It is declared first in services/mod.rs as #[macro_use] mod projections;, so every later child still sees them textually. The build confirms it: every child that composes them compiles unchanged.
The records move to services/model/, one file per domain. services/mod.rs re-exports each one by name (pub use model::{catalog::{…}, …}, with no globs), so crate::services::SongItem and waveflow_server::services::SongItem still resolve.
Children still read use super::*. The helpers that moved out of services/mod.rs are imported back into it privately (use rows::{…}, use relations::{…}, …), so the glob every child module starts with still finds them under the same names.
Visibility is widened only where the split requires it. An item that now crosses sibling files gets pub(super). An item that was pub(super) in its old file and is reached from another service now that it sits one level deeper gets pub(in crate::services). The same goes for playlists_on and playlist_on, read by sync and playlist_order. Two fields of BrowsePage get the same treatment, because sibling services read them. Nothing became pub.
artist_enrichment, artist_image_search, library_folders, library_tree, local_similar, mixes, playlist_order, radio, remote_artwork, remote_lyrics, shares and statistics each become foo/mod.rs plus foo/tests.rs (14–147 lines). Their code is unchanged.
The largest code file under src/services/ is now credit_decisions.rs (757, untouched), and the largest tests.rs has 198 lines.
Proof
cargo test --all-features -- --list | grep -c ': test$': 663 before, 663 after. The only names that differ are the four ReleaseGroup tests, services::release_group_tests::* → services::model::tests::*.
A line-multiset diff of src/services/ between the renames commit and the result loses nothing except:
the visibility words listed above;
the mod tests { wrappers and the indentation they carried;
the impl DomainServices { braces around each moved group of methods;
lines rustfmt rewrapped after a visibility word or a dedent.
cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings and cargo test --all-features (the full suite) all pass.
Noticed, deliberately not changed
Three intra-doc links now point out of scope in rustdoc:
[DomainServices::catalog_snapshot] in model/browse.rs;
[DomainServices::artist_page] (twice) in model/catalog.rs;
[ShareClear] in model/playlists.rs.
The [EVALUATE] link in the smart_playlists module doc goes out of scope the same way.
Bringing the names into scope with a use trips unused_imports, which I checked, and rewriting the links would edit moved comments. CI does not run rustdoc. A follow-up can spell the paths out.
Some single-user items stay in a mod.rs beside the items their children share:
the smart_playlists limit constants, documented together;
DueEntry and Rescheduled in scrobbling, which are read by both the drain and the retry;
replace_playlist_tracks in services/mod.rs, used by playlists and playlist_order.
Some tests.rs files are very short (remote_artwork 14 lines, library_folders 17). The shared rule moves every inline test module out, so they moved too.

This PR is a module reorganisation that moves code without changing behaviour. Two defects that existed before the move remain: a playlist comment-clear sync mismatch, and a narrow race in which the upload sweep could delete the file of a track committed at the same moment. Neither blocks the move, but both deserve follow-up.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to e4ca1
The inspected upload paths preserve their existing authentication, library permissions, quota reservations and session ownership. No new or worsened security exposure was established. The assessment remains qualified because the wider service split and production exposure were not completely verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected upload operations act on a library the authenticated account may upload to and on that account's sessions. Their intended filesystem scope is the managed directory beneath the stored library root; clients supply hashes, extensions and bytes, not destination paths. The identified cleanup interleaving concerns shared content within a library, not demonstrated cross-library or instance-wide compromise.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The credential boundary extracts a bearer token, delegates hashed-token lookup to authentication, and enforces write-capable scopes before entering upload services. Negotiation and chunk routes retain route-specific request-body ceilings. The API and authentication implementation are unchanged from the PR base; production ingress exposure and effective configured ceiling values were not verified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — A pre-existing library-data integrity weakness remains in expiry cleanup: track ownership and competing-session ownership are read separately before final-file deletion. A different session can commit between those reads, allowing cleanup to miss both ownership indications and remove the committed file. Per-session locks and the ownership guards protect other schedules but do not serialize this cross-session transition. Complete method comparisons establish that the relevant behavior predates this PR; no increased exposure was established.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — As separate hardening of the existing cleanup design, coordinate final-file ownership checks and deletion with commits for the same library/content path, and validate the interleaving with a deterministic concurrency test.

Explanation
Full details: Description check
Explanation

Three intra-doc links now point out of scope in rustdoc:
[DomainServices::catalog_snapshot]inmodel/browse.rs;[DomainServices::artist_page](twice) inmodel/catalog.rs;[ShareClear]inmodel/playlists.rs.The
[EVALUATE]link in thesmart_playlistsmodule doc goes out of scope the same way.Bringing the names into scope with a
usetripsunused_imports, which I checked, and rewriting the links would edit moved comments. CI does not run rustdoc. A follow-up can spell the paths out.Some single-user items stay in a
mod.rsbeside the items their children share:smart_playlistslimit constants, documented together;DueEntryandRescheduledinscrobbling, which are read by both the drain and the retry;replace_playlist_tracksinservices/mod.rs, used byplaylistsandplaylist_order.Some
tests.rsfiles are very short (remote_artwork14 lines,library_folders17). The shared rule moves every inline test module out, so they moved too.Summary by CodeRabbit
