Phase A of the backend restructuring, for src/media.rs, src/scanner.rs and src/watcher.rs: each becomes a directory, the code is split along its seams, and the inline unit tests move into tests.rs files. Moves only: no function renamed, no signature or logic changed, and no public path changed. Every item reachable as crate::media::X, crate::scanner::X or crate::watcher::X before still is, through explicit pub use lines (no glob). No file under tests/ was touched.

The first commit is the three git mv renames on their own, so git records media.rs → media/mod.rs and the same for the other two. One commit per module follows.

Old → new

src/media.rs (2,408 lines) → src/media/

File Lines What moved there
mod.rs 379 Module docs, MEDIA_CACHE_CONTROL, INPUT_PROTOCOLS, file_input, MediaService, MediaInner, OutputFormat, StreamQuery, MediaError and its IntoResponse, the service's lifecycle (initialize, the accessors), TOOL_CHECK_TIMEOUT and check_tool, router, bearer_principal, plus the mod/pub use lines

extract/tests.rs 134 The three tests of the tag readers and the lyrics sidecars

src/watcher.rs (762 lines) → src/watcher/

File Lines What moved there
mod.rs 489 All of the code, unchanged
tests.rs 275 The former mod tests

Where this departs from the brief, and why

  • No media/routes.rs or media/error.rs. The router is 31 lines and MediaError with its IntoResponse about 60. Both stay in mod.rs, which is where CLAUDE.md puts a router ("each mod.rs keeps the router or dispatch, the cross-cutting types"), and MediaError is the one type every child returns.
  • check_tool stays in media/mod.rs, beside initialize, its only caller. It is the service's boot check (both tools, and the FFmpeg digest quality measurements are keyed on), not part of the cache.
  • bearer_principal is in media/mod.rs, since the artwork, canvas and stream routes all use it.
  • serve / serve_with_replay_gain live in stream.rs. They decide between the original file, the cache and a live transcode, and are what every stream route calls. transcode.rs keeps what produces and stores an encode.
  • job.rs in the scanner. The impl ScanManager was 616 lines, and run alone is 345 of them. The queue and lifecycle stay in mod.rs; the job itself (run, tick, publish) moved to job.rs.
  • The scanner's tests are split by submodule (discovery/tests.rs, extract/tests.rs), which is why discovery and extract are directories. One scanner/tests.rs would have needed ExtendedTags and all 21 of its fields widened to pub(super) just so the tests could read them. Each test file is 130–145 lines. The seven tests' paths gain a segment (scanner::tests::x → scanner::discovery::tests::x / scanner::extract::tests::x).
  • The media tests stay in one media/tests.rs. crate::media::tests::{silent_wav, counting_listener} are used by src/quality/mod.rs, so that path must stay, and the transcode tests share those helpers.
  • watcher's code is not split. At 489 lines it does one thing (debounce, then manage the OS watches), so only its tests moved out.

Visibility, widened only where the split requires it

  • media::transcode: transcode_command, fill_cache_behind_a_seek, stream_transcode, fill_deadline, cache_key, extension, mime_for_format, prune_cache → pub(super). Each is used from stream.rs (serve) or tests.rs.
  • media::stream: serve_file (canvas), starts_at_the_first_byte, parse_range (tests) → pub(super).
  • media::artwork: if_none_match_hits (canvas) → pub(super).
  • scanner::job: run, publish (called by spawn in mod.rs) → pub(super).
  • scanner::extract: Scanned, scan_file (job), sidecar_options (discovery's load_rules) → pub(super).
  • scanner::discovery: Unreadable, Discovery, Reach, Walked and their fields, discover_audio, unclaimed (all used by run) → pub(super).

Nothing became pub that was not already. The utoipa path structs (__path_stream_track and the rest) are re-exported by name next to their handlers, so paths(media::stream_track, …) in lib.rs resolves as before.

Proof that nothing was lost

  • cargo test --all-features -- --list | grep -c ': test$': 663 before, 663 after. The sorted lists differ only in the seven scanner tests' new module segment.
  • A line-multiset comparison of each old file against its new directory (whitespace and pub(super) ignored) shows nothing but imports, the new //! headers, the mod/pub use lines, the braces of the split impl blocks, and two signatures rustfmt rewrapped once pub(super) made them longer (cache_key, discover_audio).
  • cargo fmt --all --check: passes.
  • cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: passes.
  • cargo test --all-features: 663 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored (lib 258, plus the 23 integration targets).

Noticed, deliberately not changed

  • secure_track_path's doc comment starts with an empty /// line, followed by a paragraph that opens on "A link on the way…". It reads as though the first paragraph (what the function does in general) was lost at some point.
  • raw_credits and extended_tags in scanner/extract/mod.rs have no blank line between them. Kept verbatim.

Summary by CodeRabbit

src/media/stream.rs, src/media/transcode.rs, src/media/tests.rs
src/media/artwork.rs, src/media/canvas.rs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gestion et déclenchement des scans
src/scanner.rs, src/scanner/mod.rs, src/watcher/mod.rs, src/watcher/tests.rs
src/scanner/discovery/mod.rs, src/scanner/discovery/tests.rs
src/scanner/extract/mod.rs, src/scanner/extract/tests.rs

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to e7e82

This restructuring moves media and scanner code into separate modules without intended behavior changes, and nothing in the review shows a new problem introduced by it. The existing scan-event cleanup issue in the scanner predates this PR and can be fixed separately.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to e7e82

The split preserves the existing routes, authorization boundaries, scan reconciliation, and transcode ownership. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened by this PR.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Ticket redemption retains verification, Audio-versus-Canvas kind checks, and propagation of the embedded user identity into downstream authorization. Canvas authorization rechecks library membership and disabled-account state. Audio resolution retains its existing user-scoped library lookup followed by stored-podcast fallback; that fallback and its caller exposure predate this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Transcoding retains global and per-user admission controls, per-key cache coordination, unique staging paths, and successful-encode publication. Listener departure and background-fill timeout retain their existing process termination and cleanup branches. These controls and failure paths are unchanged by relocation; this is not a claim that every interruption removes all staging files.
  • observed — The inspected startup recovery path resumes queued scan jobs and can schedule replacement scans, rather than resuming an interrupted running job by its original identity. This behavior exists at the PR base and is not introduced or worsened by the module split.

…g it done (#356)

scan_once returned as soon as the job read completed in the database, but the job writes that verdict while it still holds the library's lock and drops it a moment later. A test that takes the lock next, such as a_queued_scan_reads_the_library_as_it_is_when_it_runs, could find it held, which is how that test failed once on Linux CI on #353. scan_once now also waits until the scanner no longer counts the library as scanning.
