feat(webapp): a card theme picker that can follow the system, with AA contrast across all 14 presets - #349
The native <select> in Settings → Account is replaced by a grid of cards, one per preset, as the desktop draws them: a miniature of the app (a narrow sidebar with an accent dot and grey lines, a content area with an accent gradient bar and three tiles, and a play bar with an accent dot and a progress line), then the preset's name and its mode. The cards sit under a Light heading (6) and a Dark heading (8), in the catalogue's order.
Drawn from the tokens, not from screenshots. Each card carries its preset's colours as inline custom properties (--preview-ground, --preview-surface, --preview-raised, --preview-accent, …). They come from a new themeSurfaces(preset) in design-tokens/apply.ts, which uses the same defaults applyTheme falls back to, and a test holds the two together. So every card shows its own theme, whichever one is applied.
The chosen card gets the accent's edge (doubled, so it reads as a state rather than a hairline) and a check badge.
Accessibility. There is one role="radiogroup", labelled by the "Theme" heading, with a labelled group per mode. Each card is the <label> of a native <input type="radio">, and all fourteen inputs share one name. The browser therefore supplies the radio-group behaviour: a single tab stop on the checked card (roving tabindex), arrow keys that move and select across both rows and wrap, Space, and the checked state read out (an input's checkedisaria-checked). I chose this over a hand-rolled div role="radio" because Biome's useSemanticElements rule rejects that pattern, and because the native one cannot drift out of step with the pattern it implements. The input is laid transparently over the whole card, so pressing anywhere on the card presses the radio. The focus ring is drawn around the card with :has(:focus-visible).
Phone width. The grid is repeat(auto-fill, minmax(min(100%, 8.5rem), 1fr)), which gives two cards abreast on a Pixel 7. The group's <fieldset> gets min-inline-size: 0; without it a fieldset grows to its content's width and pushes the page sideways (the e2e inversion below shows 244 px of overflow).
Reduced motion. The card's lift and the border and shadow transitions are dropped under prefers-reduced-motion: reduce.
The component moved to components/theme-picker.tsx. state/preferences.tsx keeps the state and exposes it through useThemePreference().
2. "Follow the system"
There is a new per-browser preference, waveflow.themeFollowSystem ("true"/"false"), stored beside waveflow.theme and read and written inside try/catch like the existing keys. While it is on:
the page shows the chosen preset or its pair, whichever matches matchMedia("(prefers-color-scheme: dark)"), and switches live when the device changes scheme (it listens only while the box is ticked);
picking a card picks the family: choosing Midnight light at night shows Midnight, and the checked card is the one on screen;
the presets with no pair (OLED, Neon) cannot cross over, so Emerald of the other mode stands in. That is the fallback the desktop's sun/moon toggle uses. The page says so ("OLED black has no light version, so Emerald light stands in…"), so the pick does not look ignored. The stored choice stays oled, and the page returns to it when the device turns dark again;
turning it off keeps what is on screen: the displayed preset becomes the stored choice, so the page does not jump.
The decision lives in a pure themeForScheme(preset, scheme) in themes.ts, which has its own tests. First visits are unchanged: following is off by default and DEFAULT_THEME_ID (default-dark) still applies. Turning it on by default would have changed every existing user's light-mode device on upgrade. The box is not drawn in a browser that cannot report its scheme.
3. Contrast across all 14 presets
(a) Vitest, from the tokens (design-tokens/contrast.ts, contrast.test.ts, themes-contrast.test.ts).
contrast.ts is about a page of colour arithmetic: OKLCH → sRGB (Ottosson's matrices, as CSS Color 4 specifies), color-mix(in srgb, …) with premultiplied alpha and the "sum below 100 lowers alpha" rule, alpha compositing, and the WCAG 2 luminance and ratio. Channels stay unclamped until the luminance step, because the Tailwind v4 accents are partly outside sRGB and the browser clips only when it paints.
It is held to reference values: the sRGB primaries' published OKLCH coordinates; Tailwind's own hex for emerald-700, sky-700 and indigo-700 (#007a55, #0069a8, #432dd7); #808080 for a 50/50 sRGB mix of black and white; and 21:1, 4.54:1 (#767676) and below 4.5:1 (#777) for the ratio.
The per-preset test does not copy any colour. It parses styles.css, refresh.css and fluid.css with postcss, collects every top-level :root… token block that matches the preset's mode and id (by specificity, then source order), and lays over them the inline values the real applyTheme writes, read back from the element. It then resolves var() and color-mix() and measures, for every preset:
--fe-ink, --fe-ink-2 and --fe-ink-3 on the page, a panel, a raised panel, the deepest tone (--fe-tone-3 over the page), and the page under the cover's light at its strongest (see section 5) — ≥ 4.5;
--accent as text on the page, a panel and a raised panel — ≥ 4.5. The brief asked for 3, but the accent is spent on small text (links, kickers, a hovered title), and for that WCAG 1.4.3 and axe both require 4.5;
--accent as an indicator (the playing row's edge, the focus ring) beside --fe-tone-2 — ≥ 3;
--fe-accent-ink on a filled --accent (the primary button) — ≥ 4.5.
A guard test checks that the resolver actually reads each preset's own tokens: at least 7 distinct accents, 6 distinct light grounds, and 8 distinct dark grounds, panels and raised surfaces. Without it, a resolver that ignored applyTheme would measure Emerald fourteen times and still pass.
(b) Playwright (e2e/themes.spec.ts, a new file). For each preset, read from THEME_PRESETS rather than copied, axe's color-contrast rule runs on the albums grid (/), Settings (with the picker itself), and an album's song table with starred, rated and playing rows. The play bar is drawn on all three, from a remembered queue whose stream ticket loads a silent WAV, so the bar is in its ordinary state and not its error state. That is 14 presets × 2 projects (desktop, Pixel 7).
4. Dark presets paint their own surfaces
Until now, a dark preset on the web changed only its accent (and OLED its ground): fluid.css painted every dark theme on the same near-black. Each dark preset now paints its own surfaces across the whole app — the page, the rail, the play bar, panels, cards, inputs, menus, sheets and dialogs — as the desktop does, and as the cards preview.
What applies them.applyTheme writes three new root variables for a dark preset, --theme-ground, --theme-surface and --theme-raised, and removes them for a light one. The dark material reads them: --fe-bg: var(--theme-ground, #0b0b0e), --fe-surface: var(--theme-surface, #121216), --fe-surface-2: var(--theme-raised, #17171d). Every surface rule in the sheet already reads --fe-bg, --fe-surface or --fe-surface-2. The hairlines, tones and rules are translucent white, so they tint with the new surfaces without further change.
One function, two readers. The values come from themeSurfaces(preset), the same function the Settings cards draw their miniatures from, so a card and the page it previews cannot disagree:
the ground is the preset's ambient;
the raised surface is its surfaceDarkElevated;
the panel is its surfaceDark lifted by the step the material already puts between its own ground and panels (3 % white: #0b0b0e → #121216). Every preset sets surfaceDark equal to its ambient — on the desktop the sidebar sits flush with the page — and taken as it is, the web's panels and cards would vanish into the page;
a preset that names none of these (Emerald dark) keeps the material's exact near-black, so the default theme is unchanged.
OLED keeps its true black. Its ground is #000, its panel #080808 and its menus #0a0a0a (the preset's own surfaceDarkElevated). The :root.dark[data-theme="oled"] CSS override is gone; OLED now goes through the same path as the others.
Hard-coded dark colours routed through the tokens. The dark --fe-wash (the scrim a head lays over a blurred cover) was #0b0b0e and is now var(--fe-bg). The dark stand-in light (--glow, --glow-deep, used until a cover is sampled) was the accent mixed into #0b0b0e and is now mixed into the theme's ground, so Midnight's stand-in light is a blue night and not a grey one.
Deliberately left alone..artist-hero.has-banner { --fe-wash: #0b0b0e } in styles.css is not a surface. It is the scrim under white text over a banner photograph, dark "whatever the theme" by design.
The card miniatures now draw a dark preset's panel from the same surface value the page uses, rather than shading it again in the card's CSS.
5. The cover's light, measured and weakened
The glow is the two pools body::before draws, plus the heads' and the login story's light. It is now part of the vitest:
Where. Each pool's colour is taken at the largest share any background in fluid.css spends it, painted over the page. That is 60 % of --fe-glow (the login story) and 70 % of --fe-glow-deep (the lower pool). The shares are read from the sheet with postcss; shadows are excluded, since a glow cast under a cover is not a ground text sits on.
With what light. The theme's own stand-in, in both materials. In the light material, also the darkest light a cover can bring, taken as black: a record's light replaces the stand-in as soon as one plays, and a dark cover is what pulls a pale page towards the dark ink.
Measured against what. The three inks only. The kickers and counts drawn over the heads' light are --fe-ink-3; the accent is not set over the glow.
Contrast fixes
Ratios are from themes-contrast.test.ts. The palettes stay the desktop's.
For Sunset light, the deepened accent also moves the panel from 4.85 to 5.19 and white-on-accent (the primary button) from 5.05 to 5.43.
Light glow (this round). --fe-glow: color-mix(in srgb, var(--glow) 34% → 13%, var(--fe-bg)) and --fe-glow-deep: … 26% → 11%. The light glow is now about 40 % of its former strength. The table gives --fe-ink-3's lowest ratio under the glow, per light preset; "darkest cover" is the black bound:

The dark changes behind those numbers:
dark --fe-ink-3#8e8b83 → #928f87, one step lighter, for the two deepest tones;

Everything else on the new dark surfaces passed as it was, at or above 4.5 (text) and 3 (indicators): ink, ink-2, accent as text, the accent edge, and ink on a filled accent. OLED passes everywhere.
Tests
bunx biome check . passes; the warnings are pre-existing (noDescendingSpecificity in refresh.css and styles.css).
bun run typecheck and bun run build pass.
bun run test: 38 files, 314 tests. The new ones are contrast.test.ts (11), themes-contrast.test.ts (15), themeForScheme in themes.test.ts (4) and themeSurfaces in apply.test.ts (5).
bunx playwright test (all specs, both projects, against a fresh dist, after the dark surfaces): 438 passed, 24 skipped, 0 failed. No existing test needed changing for the new surfaces: studio-nocturne's per-theme checks (the artist hero, the light presets' attention page) still pass. The two studio-nocturne failures in this PR's first full run (the attention page and the station retry) passed in this run, as they had on rerun then.
Updated in place: studio-nocturne.spec.ts "renders the studio shell and persists appearance preferences" now picks the "Midnight light" radio in the "Theme" radiogroup instead of selecting from the old <select>.
The new e2e spec covers:
the cards: 14 radios, 6 under Light and 8 under Dark, one checked with its badge, and miniatures painted in their own preset's colours;
the keyboard: one tab stop on the checked card, focus ring, arrows that select across the row boundary;
following the system: live scheme changes, picking the family, persistence across a reload, the OLED stand-in note, and turning it off without a jump;
phone width: no horizontal overflow, and at least two cards abreast;
reduced motion: no card transitions;
the 14 × 3-screen axe colour-contrast sweep, which now also runs on the new dark surfaces;
the dark surfaces on the rendered page. For Midnight, Lavender, Ocean and OLED, selected from their cards:
the page's computed background is the preset's ground (OLED's is rgb(0, 0, 0));
the play bar and (on desktop) the rail are its panel, at the translucency the sheet gives them;
the four grounds differ;
the selected card's miniature ground equals the page's, and its panel equals the page's resolved --fe-surface.
The expected values go through the browser too: each is painted on a probe element, so the comparison is between computed colours, not spellings.
Inversions
Each new test was broken in a way that still compiles, seen to fail for the right reason, then restored. The restore was confirmed with an empty git diff --stat.

Fails
Light --fe-ink-3 back to #625e56, Sunset's override back to var(--accent-700)
themes-contrast: midnight-light, lavender-light and crimson-light (ink-3 on the deepest tone, 4.41/4.47/4.45) and sunset-light (accent on the page, 4.29)
OKLab→LMS→sRGB coefficient 4.0767… → 4.0067…
contrast: primaries' coordinates and Tailwind hex
mixSrgb without premultiplied alpha
contrast: "turns a mix with transparent into translucency"
themeForScheme never returns the pair
themes: "crosses to the pair"
themeSurfaces dark raised reads surfaceDark (first round)
apply: "names the surfaces applyTheme writes"
applyTheme writes the dark surfaces under other names (--theme-ground-off, …), so the material falls back to the near-black
apply: "is what applyTheme hands the dark material"; themes-contrast: "reads the theme's own tokens" (dark grounds not distinct); e2e "paints the page…" on both projects (Expected: "rgb(11, 16, 32)", Received: "rgb(11, 11, 14)" for Midnight)
The card's dark miniature shades its panel again (--preview-sidebar always the ink mix)
e2e "paints the page…": Midnight's card panel differs from the page's --fe-surface
Light glow back to 34 % / 26 %
themes-contrast: all six light presets (--fe-ink-3 under the glow, down to 3.42 on Midnight light)
Dark --fe-ink-3 back to #8e8b83 and dark stand-in glow back to 58 %
themes-contrast: seven dark presets (4.49/4.46 on Lavender's and Ocean's deepest tone, 3.84 on Sunset under the stand-in light)
The test's resolver skips applyTheme
themes-contrast: "reads the theme's own tokens", plus every light preset
Light --fe-ink-3 → #9a968e (rebuilt)
e2e: the axe sweep fails for all six light presets, on both projects
The matchMedia change listener removed
e2e: "follows the device…" (stays midnight-light when the device turns dark)
Each radio given its own name
e2e: the keyboard test (arrows no longer move within one group)
--preview-surface dropped from the card's inline style
e2e: "draws a card…" (the Midnight and Emerald miniatures paint the same)
The fieldset's min-inline-size: 0 → 40rem
e2e (mobile): the reflow test, 244 px of horizontal overflow
The reduced-motion rule for .theme-card disabled
e2e: "drops the cards' motion…"
One inversion did not fail, and I am reporting it. With the original tokens restored (#625e56 and Sunset's plain 700), the axe sweep still passes for every light preset. The pairs that fell short — muted ink on the deepest tone, and Sunset's accent as text on the bare page — are not drawn on those three screens in their resting state: hover tones and kickers on the ground are not on screen there. The token-level vitest is what catches them; the axe sweep is the in-browser net for everything the screens actually render.
Left open
A bright cover's light on a dark page is not bounded. The light material is measured against the darkest light any cover can bring. The dark material is measured only against the theme's stand-in. A bright cover's light (glowOf lets a mid-luminance sleeve through at 62 %) under a dark head's 55 % pool could still pull the muted ink below 4.5. Bounding that would mean capping glowOf or the dark shares; this PR does neither.
The worst-case glow model is conservative. It takes each pool at its full share, as if text sat at the pool's centre. Several centres sit partly off screen, so what is seen is usually lighter than what is measured.
The light glow is now about 40 % of its former strength. That is a visible change to how much a cover tints a light page.
Dark panels are a 3 %-white step above each preset's ground. That is the web material's own step, not a desktop value: the desktop draws its sidebar flush with its page.

Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected flow affects the current document's appearance and browser-local preference keys. It introduces no account-level synchronization, tenant selection, credential access or server-side write in that path.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Picker events select catalogue IDs, persisted IDs are normalized through findTheme, and browser media events supply only a light-or-dark scheme. These inputs choose predefined presentation values rather than granting additional authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The media subscription exists only while following is enabled and supplies cleanup on effect replacement or unmount. Missing media-query support falls back to the chosen preset, and light-mode application clears dark-surface overrides.

…ght glow
applyTheme now hands the dark material each preset's ground, panel and raised surface (--theme-ground, --theme-surface, --theme-raised), from the same themeSurfaces the Settings cards are drawn with. The contrast test measures the new grounds and the page under the cover's light at its strongest; the dark muted ink, the dark stand-in glow and the light glow are adjusted to hold AA there.

@coderabbitai Outside-diff note on webapp/src/state/preferences.tsx (older MediaQueryList): fixed in 20f6307. A new onMediaChange in webapp/src/lib/media-query.ts listens through addEventListener where it exists, falls back to addListener/removeListener (Safari before 14), and does nothing rather than throw where neither exists. "Follow the system" now goes through it. Its vitest covers all three cases, and disabling the fallback makes the older-list case fail. themes.spec.ts passes: 39 passed, 1 skipped. I left canvas.tsx as it is: it is outside this PR, and you noted its scope is limited.

…back everywhere, steadier tests (#350)
* refactor(webapp): build the card menu on the track menu's popup
ActionMenu (#348) carried its own copy of the panel, its keys and its outside-close listeners beside PopupMenu (#347). It is now a button over PopupMenu, which gains an optional icon, a danger entry, an id, a class, and a placement above its button when there is no room below. The placement is a pure function with its own tests. onClose now says whether focus goes back to the opener: yes for a key or an entry, no for a press elsewhere.

* fix(webapp): follow media queries through onMediaChange everywhere
The reduced-motion hook and the podcasts two-panel hook called addEventListener on a MediaQueryList directly, which throws on a Safari older than 14. Both now go through the fallback #349 added for the theme.

* test(webapp): wait for the writes and the confirmation the slow runs missed
The podcast test read the route's writes straight after a click, before the route had seen them, so they are now polled. The split test's accessibility scan can outlast the four seconds the confirmation stands on a loaded machine, so it is armed again if it lapsed.

What changed and why
1. A card picker for the themes
The native
<select>in Settings → Account is replaced by a grid of cards, one per preset, as the desktop draws them: a miniature of the app (a narrow sidebar with an accent dot and grey lines, a content area with an accent gradient bar and three tiles, and a play bar with an accent dot and a progress line), then the preset's name and its mode. The cards sit under a Light heading (6) and a Dark heading (8), in the catalogue's order.--preview-ground,--preview-surface,--preview-raised,--preview-accent, …). They come from a newthemeSurfaces(preset)indesign-tokens/apply.ts, which uses the same defaultsapplyThemefalls back to, and a test holds the two together. So every card shows its own theme, whichever one is applied.role="radiogroup", labelled by the "Theme" heading, with a labelled group per mode. Each card is the<label>of a native<input type="radio">, and all fourteen inputs share one name. The browser therefore supplies the radio-group behaviour: a single tab stop on the checked card (roving tabindex), arrow keys that move and select across both rows and wrap, Space, and the checked state read out (an input'scheckedisaria-checked). I chose this over a hand-rolleddiv role="radio"because Biome'suseSemanticElementsrule rejects that pattern, and because the native one cannot drift out of step with the pattern it implements. The input is laid transparently over the whole card, so pressing anywhere on the card presses the radio. The focus ring is drawn around the card with:has(:focus-visible).repeat(auto-fill, minmax(min(100%, 8.5rem), 1fr)), which gives two cards abreast on a Pixel 7. The group's<fieldset>getsmin-inline-size: 0; without it a fieldset grows to its content's width and pushes the page sideways (the e2e inversion below shows 244 px of overflow).prefers-reduced-motion: reduce.components/theme-picker.tsx.state/preferences.tsxkeeps the state and exposes it throughuseThemePreference().2. "Follow the system"
There is a new per-browser preference,
waveflow.themeFollowSystem("true"/"false"), stored besidewaveflow.themeand read and written inside try/catch like the existing keys. While it is on:pair, whichever matchesmatchMedia("(prefers-color-scheme: dark)"), and switches live when the device changes scheme (it listens only while the box is ticked);oled, and the page returns to it when the device turns dark again;The decision lives in a pure
themeForScheme(preset, scheme)inthemes.ts, which has its own tests. First visits are unchanged: following is off by default andDEFAULT_THEME_ID(default-dark) still applies. Turning it on by default would have changed every existing user's light-mode device on upgrade. The box is not drawn in a browser that cannot report its scheme.3. Contrast across all 14 presets
(a) Vitest, from the tokens (
design-tokens/contrast.ts,contrast.test.ts,themes-contrast.test.ts).contrast.tsis about a page of colour arithmetic: OKLCH → sRGB (Ottosson's matrices, as CSS Color 4 specifies),color-mix(in srgb, …)with premultiplied alpha and the "sum below 100 lowers alpha" rule, alpha compositing, and the WCAG 2 luminance and ratio. Channels stay unclamped until the luminance step, because the Tailwind v4 accents are partly outside sRGB and the browser clips only when it paints.#007a55,#0069a8,#432dd7);#808080for a 50/50 sRGB mix of black and white; and 21:1, 4.54:1 (#767676) and below 4.5:1 (#777) for the ratio.styles.css,refresh.cssandfluid.csswith postcss, collects every top-level:root…token block that matches the preset's mode and id (by specificity, then source order), and lays over them the inline values the realapplyThemewrites, read back from the element. It then resolvesvar()andcolor-mix()and measures, for every preset:--fe-ink,--fe-ink-2and--fe-ink-3on the page, a panel, a raised panel, the deepest tone (--fe-tone-3over the page), and the page under the cover's light at its strongest (see section 5) — ≥ 4.5;--accentas text on the page, a panel and a raised panel — ≥ 4.5. The brief asked for 3, but the accent is spent on small text (links, kickers, a hovered title), and for that WCAG 1.4.3 and axe both require 4.5;--accentas an indicator (the playing row's edge, the focus ring) beside--fe-tone-2— ≥ 3;--fe-accent-inkon a filled--accent(the primary button) — ≥ 4.5.applyThemewould measure Emerald fourteen times and still pass.(b) Playwright (
e2e/themes.spec.ts, a new file). For each preset, read fromTHEME_PRESETSrather than copied, axe'scolor-contrastrule runs on the albums grid (/), Settings (with the picker itself), and an album's song table with starred, rated and playing rows. The play bar is drawn on all three, from a remembered queue whose stream ticket loads a silent WAV, so the bar is in its ordinary state and not its error state. That is 14 presets × 2 projects (desktop, Pixel 7).4. Dark presets paint their own surfaces
Until now, a dark preset on the web changed only its accent (and OLED its ground):
fluid.csspainted every dark theme on the same near-black. Each dark preset now paints its own surfaces across the whole app — the page, the rail, the play bar, panels, cards, inputs, menus, sheets and dialogs — as the desktop does, and as the cards preview.applyThemewrites three new root variables for a dark preset,--theme-ground,--theme-surfaceand--theme-raised, and removes them for a light one. The dark material reads them:--fe-bg: var(--theme-ground, #0b0b0e),--fe-surface: var(--theme-surface, #121216),--fe-surface-2: var(--theme-raised, #17171d). Every surface rule in the sheet already reads--fe-bg,--fe-surfaceor--fe-surface-2. The hairlines, tones and rules are translucent white, so they tint with the new surfaces without further change.themeSurfaces(preset), the same function the Settings cards draw their miniatures from, so a card and the page it previews cannot disagree:ambient;surfaceDarkElevated;surfaceDarklifted by the step the material already puts between its own ground and panels (3 % white:#0b0b0e→#121216). Every preset setssurfaceDarkequal to its ambient — on the desktop the sidebar sits flush with the page — and taken as it is, the web's panels and cards would vanish into the page;#000, its panel#080808and its menus#0a0a0a(the preset's ownsurfaceDarkElevated). The:root.dark[data-theme="oled"]CSS override is gone; OLED now goes through the same path as the others.--fe-wash(the scrim a head lays over a blurred cover) was#0b0b0eand is nowvar(--fe-bg). The dark stand-in light (--glow,--glow-deep, used until a cover is sampled) was the accent mixed into#0b0b0eand is now mixed into the theme's ground, so Midnight's stand-in light is a blue night and not a grey one..artist-hero.has-banner { --fe-wash: #0b0b0e }instyles.cssis not a surface. It is the scrim under white text over a banner photograph, dark "whatever the theme" by design.surfacevalue the page uses, rather than shading it again in the card's CSS.5. The cover's light, measured and weakened
The glow is the two pools
body::beforedraws, plus the heads' and the login story's light. It is now part of the vitest:backgroundinfluid.cssspends it, painted over the page. That is 60 % of--fe-glow(the login story) and 70 % of--fe-glow-deep(the lower pool). The shares are read from the sheet with postcss; shadows are excluded, since a glow cast under a cover is not a ground text sits on.--fe-ink-3; the accent is not set over the glow.Contrast fixes
Ratios are from
themes-contrast.test.ts. The palettes stay the desktop's.Light material (first round):

Light glow (this round).
--fe-glow: color-mix(in srgb, var(--glow) 34% → 13%, var(--fe-bg))and--fe-glow-deep: … 26% → 11%. The light glow is now about 40 % of its former strength. The table gives--fe-ink-3's lowest ratio under the glow, per light preset; "darkest cover" is the black bound:Dark material (this round, after the new surfaces):
--fe-ink-3on the deepest tone (#282330)--fe-ink-3on the deepest tone (#1c2732)--fe-ink-3under the stand-in light at 60 %The dark changes behind those numbers:
--fe-ink-3#8e8b83→#928f87, one step lighter, for the two deepest tones;--glowis the accent-700 at 40 % in the ground instead of 58 %, for the stand-in light.Everything else on the new dark surfaces passed as it was, at or above 4.5 (text) and 3 (indicators): ink, ink-2, accent as text, the accent edge, and ink on a filled accent. OLED passes everywhere.
Tests
bunx biome check .passes; the warnings are pre-existing (noDescendingSpecificityinrefresh.cssandstyles.css).bun run typecheckandbun run buildpass.bun run test: 38 files, 314 tests. No existing test needed changing for the new surfaces:studio-nocturne's per-theme checks (the artist hero, the light presets' attention page) still pass. The twostudio-nocturnefailures in this PR's first full run (the attention page and the station retry) passed in this run, as they had on rerun then.studio-nocturne.spec.ts"renders the studio shell and persists appearance preferences" now picks the "Midnight light" radio in the "Theme" radiogroup instead of selecting from the old<select>.The new e2e spec covers:
the cards: 14 radios, 6 under Light and 8 under Dark, one checked with its badge, and miniatures painted in their own preset's colours;
the keyboard: one tab stop on the checked card, focus ring, arrows that select across the row boundary;
following the system: live scheme changes, picking the family, persistence across a reload, the OLED stand-in note, and turning it off without a jump;
phone width: no horizontal overflow, and at least two cards abreast;
reduced motion: no card transitions;
the 14 × 3-screen axe colour-contrast sweep, which now also runs on the new dark surfaces;
the dark surfaces on the rendered page. For Midnight, Lavender, Ocean and OLED, selected from their cards:
rgb(0, 0, 0));--fe-surface.The expected values go through the browser too: each is painted on a probe element, so the comparison is between computed colours, not spellings.

With the original tokens restored (

The pairs that fell short — muted ink on the deepest tone, and Sunset's accent as text on the bare page — are not drawn on those three screens in their resting state: hover tones and kickers on the ground are not on screen there.
