RFC-022 and its whole implementation, from the 2026-10-24 comparative audit: five gaps in how music reaches a listener.
ReplayGain in the web player. The <audio> element is routed through one GainNode (createMediaElementSource); tickets, URLs and range requests are untouched. Modes off / track / album, a −12…+12 dB preamp, stored per browser beside the theme. Off by default.
Discography by type, and "Appears on".AlbumItem gains release_group (album, ep, single, live, compilation), derived once in src/services/ from release_types and is_compilation. GET /api/v2/artists/{id} gains appears_on. The artist page shows Albums, EPs, Singles, Live, Compilations, Appears on, each only when it holds something.
Installable client.manifest.webmanifest, PNG icons at 192/512 plus a maskable 512 and a 180 apple-touch-icon, rendered from the existing mark by webapp/scripts/render-icons.ts. No service worker.
AAC, and a Subsonic format fallback. AAC-LC in ADTS (audio/aac, 192 kbit/s default) on the native routes, the ticket route and Subsonic (aac, m4a, adts). GET /api/v2/transcode/status gains formats. A Subsonic format the server cannot produce (flac, wav, a typo) is read as no format at all instead of error 10.
Subsonic form body. Bounded at MAX_PLAYLIST_TRACKS × 64 + 64 KiB (705,536 bytes) instead of a fixed 64 KiB, so a playlist at the domain's ceiling fits in one updatePlaylist/createPlaylist.
Decisions (see the RFC for the reasoning)
The audit was partly wrong, and the RFC says so.release_types was already on the native wire (AlbumItem serialises it); what was missing was a decision about what the values mean. The 64 KiB cap was not ~1,600 UUIDs: it stopped createPlaylist short of 1,490 and updatePlaylist short of 1,338. savePlayQueue was never bound by the body: MAX_QUEUE_TRACKS refuses it above 400.
Release groups (first rule wins): compilation flag or type → live → ep → single → album. Values split on ;, / and , (Picard's ID3v2.3 joins with /), compared without case. Unknown or missing → album, so untagged libraries keep their single section. Native only; the Subsonic nodes are built field by field and do not change.
Appears on: a credit in the track artist role only (composer/producer/performer do not count), on an available track, excluding albums the artist is album artist of. Built on album_select! (user first, library_member), computed only by artist_page after the tenancy lookup, so an outsider gets 404 and Subsonic getArtist never pays for it.
ReplayGain off by default, graph built lazily: routing through an AudioContext can stop lock-screen playback on some mobile browsers, which an installed client makes common. The graph is built on the next play the listener starts (always a gesture), or at once if it is turned on mid-track. Album mode falls back to the track pair and vice versa; untagged tracks play at unity without the preamp; the gain is capped at 1 / peak; the total is bounded to [−60, +18] dB. A cross-origin URL is refused for the graph (tickets are relative, so same-origin by construction).
No service worker: not needed to install any more, and the one PWA piece that could serve stale or private data. The manifest and icons are asset-only paths in src/webui.rs: served with their type when built, a JSON 404 otherwise, never the client shell.
ADTS rather than MP4: transcodes go down a pipe; a regular MP4 cannot be written to one and a fragmented one has no index to seek by. FFmpeg's native aac encoder, which every build has.
Fallback is Subsonic only. The native API keeps answering 400 for an unknown format; its clients read formats. docs/subsonic-compatibility.md records the wire change under the frozen contract.
cargo test --all-features: full suite green, 22 targets (see below for the new tests). The Rust gates and every server inversion were run a second time in a target directory of this branch's own, after it turned out that worktrees sharing one CARGO_TARGET_DIR can be compiled against each other's library.
bun install --frozen-lockfile, bun run lint (no new warning), bun run build, bun run test (vitest, 27 files / 223 tests), Playwright on both projects: 260 passed, 14 skipped.
New tests:
services::release_group_tests (lib): one case per row of the RFC table, precedence, separators and case, unknown types.
native_api::an_artist_page_groups_its_discography_and_lists_its_appearances: each group, raw types kept, appears_on holds the guest album only (not the composer-only album, not the artist's own albums), outsider 404.
media::an_aac_transcode_streams_as_adts_and_seeks_once_cached: audio/aac, ADTS sync word, ffprobe reads aac/aac on the cache file, 206 range from cache, native format=flac still 400; transcode_status… asserts formats.
subsonic_methods::a_format_the_facade_cannot_produce_falls_back_and_aac_is_produced: flac/wav/nonsense → original WAV, flac under a low maxBitRate → MP3, aac/m4a/AAC → ADTS.
subsonic_methods::a_playlist_as_long_as_the_domain_allows_fits_in_one_form_post: 10,000 distinct songIdToAdd in one form POST → songCount 10,000; bound + 1 byte → error 10 Invalid form body; exactly the bound → read.
service::the_install_manifest_and_icons_are_never_answered_with_the_shell: passes with and without an embedded client build.
Playwright: sections and appearances; a server without groups keeps one section; ReplayGain builds no AudioContext while off or merely chosen, builds exactly one on the next play and sets the expected gain (album −8 + 3 dB preamp, then track −7 + 3); manifest and every icon served; light appearance axe sweep of the settings and artist screens. Both themes were also checked by screenshot.
Verified by inversion
Each fix was reverted, the test watched to fail for its own reason, then restored (backups compared byte for byte):
form bound back to 64 KiB → the 10,000-id updatePlaylist answered {"code":10,"message":"Invalid form body"} (this is also the confirmation of the old ceiling the audit only estimated);
Subsonic unknown format back to error 10 → format=flac answered application/xml;
asset-only paths removed → /manifest.webmanifest answered the shell;
compilation rule disabled → unit tests and the native test filed Best Of as album;
AAC unreachable on the native route → 400 instead of 200;
appears_on without the album-artist exclusion → 7 albums instead of 1; with any role instead of artist → 2 (the composer album);
clipping cap removed → vitest expected 1.995… to be close to 1.25;
prepareGraph removed from play → Playwright counted 0 contexts instead of 1;
appears_on not passed to the page → "Appears on" heading missing; manifest link removed → Playwright link[rel=manifest] not found.
One test was corrected during inversion: the form test first failed on its own precondition (body.len() <= MAX_FORM_BYTES) rather than on the server's answer; that assertion was removed so it fails for the right reason.
Deferred (in the RFC's "What is still open")
savePlayQueue above 400 tracks: a domain bound shared with the native API, not the body.
A playlist cannot hold a track twice, found while writing the form test: playlist_track is keyed on (playlist_id, track_id), so a createPlaylist/updatePlaylist naming one track twice answers error 0 (internal) instead of keeping or cleanly refusing it. Needs its own change.
Server-side ReplayGain on Subsonic stream, offline playback / a service worker, and a measured per-device ReplayGain default.
No migration was needed.

ReplayGain in the web player through Web Audio, discography sections and appearances on the artist page, an installable client with no service worker, AAC in ADTS, a Subsonic format fallback, and a form body sized for the largest playlist.

…appearances (RFC-022)
AAC-LC is the third transcode, written as ADTS so it streams down a pipe and seeks by range once cached; transcode/status lists the formats. A Subsonic format the server cannot produce is read as no format at all instead of error 10. Albums carry a release_group derived once from release_types and the compilation flag, and the native artist page lists appears_on: albums crediting the artist in the artist role on which they are not album artist. The formPost body is bounded at MAX_PLAYLIST_TRACKS x 64 + 64 KiB, so a playlist at the ceiling fits in one call. The manifest and icons are answered as themselves or a JSON 404, never the client shell.
Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>
…ent (RFC-022)
The player levels each track by its ReplayGain through a GainNode fed by the audio element: off, track or album, falling back to the other pair, a preamp from -12 to +12 dB applied to tagged tracks only, and capped at 1/peak against clipping. Off by default; the graph is built on the next play the listener starts, never on load. The preference is stored per browser beside the theme. The artist page shows Albums, EPs, Singles, Live, Compilations and Appears on from the server's release_group and appears_on. A web app manifest, PNG icons rendered from the mark, and an apple-touch-icon make the client installable; there is no service worker.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to dd762
The reviewed playback cleanup does not establish a remaining playback failure. The PR is mergeable after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to dd762
Account-scoped access remains in place for catalog and media requests. The main security-relevant change is a larger Subsonic form allowance that also increases parsing work before authentication. Requests remain size-bounded, but protection against concurrent anonymous requests is not established.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: The playlist-sized form allowance applies before authentication across Subsonic POST methods. Anonymous callers can therefore trigger approximately 10.8 times the previous buffering and decoding budget, including allocations for arbitrary parameter pairs, before authentication throttling is reached. The finite byte ceiling contains each request, but concurrent parsing can increase pressure on the shared server process. This worsens an existing exposure rather than introducing the pre-authentication parsing order.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The increased form-processing exposure is reachable without credentials wherever Subsonic is exposed. Its potential impact is shared-process availability, including other users, rather than access to another user's catalog or playlists. Deployment-level admission controls were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A caller can submit a form containing many short parameter pairs, omit credentials, and still cause buffering and string-pair decoding before rejection. The decoder has no separate pair-count check, and authentication's reservation occurs afterward. Repetition or concurrency can amplify resource pressure; actual exhaustion was not demonstrated.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Native playback authenticates before user-scoped track lookup. Ticket redemption verifies the sealed audio capability and repeats that lookup. AAC then uses the existing media service, including source validation and global and per-user transcode limits.
observed — Artist appearances are computed after authenticated artist resolution and use caller-scoped library membership predicates. Subsonic media and playlist callers also pass the authenticated principal into existing service operations.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The form allowance remains finite and rejects oversized or invalid input before dispatch. This contains individual requests, but the playlist track ceiling does not itself limit allocations made while decoding anonymous parameter pairs.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — For publicly exposed deployments, bound concurrent anonymous body parsing and decoded parameter count independently of the playlist byte allowance, while preserving support for a legitimate maximum-size playlist.

The ReplayGain graph used to call createMediaElementSource before resuming its context, so a context the browser left suspended would play the music as silence. The context is now resumed first and the element wired only when it runs; otherwise the candidate is closed and the element keeps its direct output, and a later gesture resumes the same candidate rather than making another. Any failure while wiring closes the context. Automatic plays (next track, repeat-one) and a statechange to suspended or interrupted under a playing element ask the graph to run again.

The manifest test accepted a JSON 404 for every install asset even with the real client embedded, so a build that dropped an icon passed. It now tells the build from the placeholder by the shell at /, and requires 200 with the right type for the manifest and each icon when the client is built.

Signing out unmounts the player, and an open AudioContext holds the audio device until it is closed. The candidate and the graph's context are now closed on unmount, and a wiring that finishes after the unmount closes its own context. The mount marker is set on every mount, so StrictMode and Fast Refresh replays keep working, and an element still claimed by a closed context is dropped so a remounted instance makes a fresh one.

Summary
RFC-022 and its whole implementation, from the 2026-10-24 comparative audit: five gaps in how music reaches a listener.

A Subsonicformatthe server cannot produce (flac,wav, a typo) is read as no format at all instead of error 10.MAX_PLAYLIST_TRACKS × 64 + 64 KiB(705,536 bytes) instead of a fixed 64 KiB, so a playlist at the domain's ceiling fits in oneupdatePlaylist/createPlaylist.Decisions (see the RFC for the reasoning)
release_typeswas already on the native wire (AlbumItemserialises it); what was missing was a decision about what the values mean. The 64 KiB cap was not ~1,600 UUIDs: it stoppedcreatePlaylistshort of 1,490 andupdatePlaylistshort of 1,338.savePlayQueuewas never bound by the body:MAX_QUEUE_TRACKSrefuses it above 400.;,/and,(Picard's ID3v2.3 joins with/), compared without case. Unknown or missing → album, so untagged libraries keep their single section. Native only; the Subsonic nodes are built field by field and do not change.artistrole only (composer/producer/performer do not count), on an available track, excluding albums the artist is album artist of. Built onalbum_select!(user first,library_member), computed only byartist_pageafter the tenancy lookup, so an outsider gets 404 and SubsonicgetArtistnever pays for it.AudioContextcan stop lock-screen playback on some mobile browsers, which an installed client makes common. The graph is built on the next play the listener starts (always a gesture), or at once if it is turned on mid-track. Album mode falls back to the track pair and vice versa; untagged tracks play at unity without the preamp; the gain is capped at1 / peak; the total is bounded to [−60, +18] dB. A cross-origin URL is refused for the graph (tickets are relative, so same-origin by construction).src/webui.rs: served with their type when built, a JSON 404 otherwise, never the client shell.aacencoder, which every build has.400for an unknown format; its clients readformats.docs/subsonic-compatibility.mdrecords the wire change under the frozen contract.Test plan
cargo fmt --all --check,cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings: clean.cargo test --all-features: full suite green, 22 targets (see below for the new tests). The Rust gates and every server inversion were run a second time in a target directory of this branch's own, after it turned out that worktrees sharing oneCARGO_TARGET_DIRcan be compiled against each other's library.bun install --frozen-lockfile,bun run lint(no new warning),bun run build,bun run test(vitest, 27 files / 223 tests), Playwright on both projects: 260 passed, 14 skipped.New tests:
services::release_group_tests(lib): one case per row of the RFC table, precedence, separators and case, unknown types.native_api::an_artist_page_groups_its_discography_and_lists_its_appearances: each group, raw types kept, appears_on holds the guest album only (not the composer-only album, not the artist's own albums), outsider 404.media::an_aac_transcode_streams_as_adts_and_seeks_once_cached:audio/aac, ADTS sync word,ffprobereadsaac/aacon the cache file,206range from cache, nativeformat=flacstill400;transcode_status…assertsformats.subsonic_methods::a_format_the_facade_cannot_produce_falls_back_and_aac_is_produced:flac/wav/nonsense → original WAV,flacunder a lowmaxBitRate→ MP3,aac/m4a/AAC→ ADTS.subsonic_methods::a_playlist_as_long_as_the_domain_allows_fits_in_one_form_post: 10,000 distinctsongIdToAddin one form POST →songCount10,000; bound + 1 byte → error 10Invalid form body; exactly the bound → read.service::the_install_manifest_and_icons_are_never_answered_with_the_shell: passes with and without an embedded client build.lib/replay-gain.test.ts,lib/discography.test.ts.AudioContextwhile off or merely chosen, builds exactly one on the next play and sets the expected gain (album −8 + 3 dB preamp, then track −7 + 3); manifest and every icon served; light appearance axe sweep of the settings and artist screens. Both themes were also checked by screenshot.Verified by inversion
Each fix was reverted, the test watched to fail for its own reason, then restored (backups compared byte for byte):
updatePlaylistanswered{"code":10,"message":"Invalid form body"}(this is also the confirmation of the old ceiling the audit only estimated);format=flacansweredapplication/xml;/manifest.webmanifest answered the shell;Best Ofasalbum;400instead of200;artist→ 2 (the composer album);expected 1.995… to be close to 1.25;prepareGraphremoved fromplay→ Playwright counted 0 contexts instead of 1;appears_onnot passed to the page → "Appears on" heading missing; manifest link removed → Playwrightlink[rel=manifest]not found.One test was corrected during inversion: the form test first failed on its own precondition (
body.len() <= MAX_FORM_BYTES) rather than on the server's answer; that assertion was removed so it fails for the right reason.Deferred (in the RFC's "What is still open")
savePlayQueueabove 400 tracks: a domain bound shared with the native API, not the body.playlist_trackis keyed on(playlist_id, track_id), so acreatePlaylist/updatePlaylistnaming one track twice answers error 0 (internal) instead of keeping or cleanly refusing it. Needs its own change.stream, offline playback / a service worker, and a measured per-device ReplayGain default.No migration was needed.
