Implements all of RFC-014, steps 2 and 3 together: TheAudioDB's fanart as the automatic artist banner.

What it does

  • Provider (decision 1):
    • theaudiodb is accepted in WAVEFLOW_METADATA_PROVIDERS, off by default.
    • It needs WAVEFLOW_METADATA_THEAUDIODB_KEY: listed without one, the server refuses to start. The key is redacted from Debug output, and the public test key is not used.
    • With WAVEFLOW_METADATA_IMAGES=off it is not built.
    • Its biographies are not stored.
  • Picture (decision 2):
    • The four strArtistFanart* are tried in order. A fanart refused for what it is (host outside the allowlist, not an image, too large) gives way to the next one.
    • The first fanart stored is kept.
    • If no fanart is accepted, the answer counts as "nothing found" (a miss). If an image host cannot be reached, the lookup counts as unreached and nothing is written.
    • The strArtistBanner and strArtistWideThumb strips are never asked for.
    • Images come only from r2.theaudiodb.com and www.theaudiodb.com, through the existing narrow fetcher.
  • Storage (decision 3), migration 20261024010000_artist_fanart.sql:
    • The cache stores the fanart in metadata_artist.fanart_hash.
    • artist.fanart_hash gets it for every artist row with the name, only where it changes, with one artist library event per row. If an artist row loses its link, the next visit relinks it from the cache without downloading the picture again.
    • When a refresh finds no fanart, the rows still showing the previous fanart are unlinked, with one event per row. A refresh that fails (timeout, 429) changes nothing.
  • Readers (decision 4):
    • The artist detail's banner_hash is the banner chosen by hand, otherwise the fanart.
    • enrichment.banner credits TheAudioDB only while its fanart is the banner shown.
    • GET /api/v2/artwork/{hash} serves it to the members of the artist's library.
    • Subsonic is unchanged.
  • Pace (decision 5): TheAudioDB is never asked more than once every two seconds, whatever WAVEFLOW_METADATA_RATE_PER_SEC says, and each fanart download counts against that pace.
  • Sweep (decision 6): it keeps artwork that artist.fanart_hash names.
  • Web client: the artist page shows "Banner from TheAudioDB, {date}" under an automatic banner, and no credit under a chosen one.
  • Docs: docs/operations.md covers the provider, its key, the hosts it contacts and its pace. RFC-011 lists the new key.

Tests

  • Five integration tests in tests/enrichment.rs, against a fake TheAudioDB:
    • the fanart order and the allowlist;
    • the operator's key and the pace;
    • linking on every artist with the name, and serving the banner to a member;
    • a chosen banner winning, and the fanart coming back when it is removed;
    • unlinking when nothing is found, and not unlinking when unreached;
    • the sweep;
    • relinking from the cache;
    • the key and the images switch.
  • Config unit tests for the key.
  • A Playwright test for the credit line.

Inversions. Each protection was removed in turn, on a build that compiles, and its test failed.

Inversions

Server:

  • key required at boot: caught
  • images off leaves it unbuilt: caught
  • a refused fanart gives way to the next: caught
  • fanart host allowlist: caught
  • TheAudioDB's own pace: caught (three requests in 43 ms instead of at least 4 s)
  • every fanart request paced: caught
  • linked on every artist: caught
  • a miss unlinks: caught
  • unreached unlinks nothing: caught
  • the fanart is the fallback banner: caught
  • a chosen banner is not credited: caught
  • the banner is served to members: caught
  • the sweep keeps a linked banner: caught
  • a cached banner is linked again: caught

Client (Playwright, desktop):

  • banner credited: caught
  • TheAudioDB named: caught

Checks: cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -D warnings, cargo test --all-features (all targets), vitest 190/190, Playwright 196 passed, tsc, biome.

The image hosts are the ones observed when the RFC was written. A first run against the real TheAudioDB, with a real key, is still to be done.

Summary by CodeRabbit

RFC-014 steps 2 and 3. theaudiodb joins WAVEFLOW_METADATA_PROVIDERS, off by default and keyed by WAVEFLOW_METADATA_THEAUDIODB_KEY; it is asked for fanart only, never faster than once every two seconds, and not built with images off. The fanarts are tried in order, a refused one giving way to the next, from TheAudioDB's image hosts only. The first real one is cached on metadata_artist.fanart_hash and linked onto artist.fanart_hash for every artist with the name, one artist event each; a later miss unlinks it, an unreached refresh changes nothing. The artist detail's banner_hash is the chosen banner, else that fanart, with enrichment.banner crediting TheAudioDB while it is shown; the artwork route serves it to members and the sweep keeps it. The web client credits it under the header.

Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration et récupération des fanarts
src/config.rs, src/enrichment.rs, tests/enrichment.rs, docs/operations.md, docs/rfcs/RFC-011-metadata-enrichment.md
migrations-v2/20261024010000_artist_fanart.sql, src/database.rs, src/enrichment.rs, src/services/artwork.rs, tests/enrichment.rs
src/services/artist_enrichment.rs, src/services/artist_images.rs, src/services/catalog.rs, src/services/mod.rs, webapp/src/api/catalog.ts, webapp/src/pages/artist-page.tsx, webapp/src/state/i18n.tsx, tests/enrichment.rs, webapp/e2e/studio-nocturne.spec.ts, docs/operations.md, docs/rfcs/RFC-014-automatic-artist-banner.md

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to dd949

No concrete current-head merge risk was established; automatic banner display and attribution behavior is covered by the inspected code and tests.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to dd949

The new image source is opt-in. Existing access checks, restricted image downloads, and transactional updates limit its exposure. No introduced security vulnerability was established, although external-client internals and deployment rollback behavior remain unverified.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Automatic fanart ownership is server-wide by canonical artist name: an authorized artist visit can trigger enrichment that updates same-name artist rows across libraries. This affects shared provider artwork and per-library events, while artwork reads remain membership-scoped.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Catalog entrypoints authenticate before service invocation, and artist visibility is checked before enrichment scheduling. Serving fanart by hash requires membership in a library whose artist references that hash; the new association does not replace this authorization boundary.
  • observed — Provider-supplied image URLs pass through the existing narrow fetcher: production HTTPS, exact host allowlisting, public-address validation, DNS pinning, disabled redirects and environment proxies, supported image validation, and a 10 MiB response limit constrain the new outbound path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Database failures or interruption before commit do not publish partially updated artist links and events. Image-file storage precedes the transaction, so interruption can leave an unreferenced file, but not a committed artist association without the corresponding transactional records. Fill reservations are released through task cleanup.

artist_enrichment, which getArtistInfo reads, now drops enrichment.banner when a banner was chosen by hand, as the artist page did: the rule moves into enrichment_of so both entry points answer the same. The web client falls back on enrichment.banner when the artist row is not linked yet, as it already does for the portrait.
