WaveFlow can now be opened from the system's Open with on every platform, for the formats it plays: mp3, flac, wav, aiff/aif, ogg/oga, opus, m4a, aac, dsf and dff. It is made the default for none of them, so the default player stays the user's choice. .mp4 is left out, since it is a video type first. The engine behind this (playing files without importing them, the command line and single instance) landed in #927 and #929.

macOS

  • Declared formats: bundle.fileAssociations in tauri.macos.conf.json, one entry per format with its MIME type, role Viewer and rank Alternate. WaveFlow is listed under Open With and never picked over the owner.
  • No type claimed: there is no exportedType, so WaveFlow declares none of these types as its own.
  • Receiving the files: macOS opens files through RunEvent::Opened instead of the command line. The run loop hands those URLs to launch_args::paths_from_urls and then to play_when_ready.

Why macOS only. On Windows, Tauri's associations write each extension's default class: NSIS APP_ASSOCIATE, and advertised ProgIds in the MSI. A tauri.windows.conf.json setting them to null does not work. The CLI merges the base config, then the platform file, then the --config overlay, and scripts/tauri.mjs passes the whole tauri.conf.json as that overlay, which puts them back. A first build caught it: the MSI still advertised every extension.

Linux (.deb, .rpm, AppImage, and so the AUR and COPR packages)

linux/waveflow.desktop is Tauri's desktop template with two changes:

  • Exec=waveflow %F: the default template has no field code, so Open with WaveFlow started an empty window.
  • MimeType: it lists the formats, with the legacy aliases (audio/x-flac, ...).

The template's rendering was checked with handlebars-rs, the library the bundler uses.

Windows: Open with only

The NSIS hooks (windows/open-with.nsh) and a WiX fragment for the MSI (windows/open-with.wxs) write:

  • the WaveFlow.Audio ProgID;
  • .ext\OpenWithProgids, the Open with entry;
  • Applications\waveflow.exe\SupportedTypes, so WaveFlow is not offered for other types;
  • Capabilities and RegisteredApplications, which list WaveFlow in Settings > Default apps, where the user can choose it.

Details:

  • Hive: NSIS writes under the hive its install mode chose (SHCTX) and tells Explorer (SHChangeNotify). The MSI is per machine.
  • Uninstall: it removes only WaveFlow's own values. .ext and OpenWithProgids are shared with other players, and NSIS's DeleteRegKey /ifempty looks at subkeys, not values. An /UPDATE uninstall leaves the entries in place, as the template leaves the shortcuts.
  • Hook paths: the hooks file is included before the template defines MAINBINARYNAME and MANUPRODUCTKEY, so the paths built from them live in macro bodies.
  • WiX fragment: a fragment is not rendered by the bundler's Handlebars (candle reads the source), so the names are written out: waveflow.exe and Software\InstaZDLL\WaveFlow.

Files opened together play together

When several files are opened at once, Windows starts the program once per file. Each file then reaches the running window on its own, and each would replace the queue the previous one had just started.

play_when_ready now gathers the arrivals until none has come for 400 ms. That wait is capped at 3 s once the player is up, and the wait for the player at a cold start gathers too. Each file is kept once, in arrival order, and they play as one queue.

Packaging cleanups

  • Flatpak formats: its desktop entry and metainfo stop listing formats WaveFlow cannot play: WavPack, Musepack, and M3U/PLS playlists, which would have ended in "no audio file to play".
  • Descriptions: the Flatpak comment, the winget template and the COPR README describe the app on its own terms.

Checks

  • cargo fmt --check passes, and cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets passes on Windows and on macOS with -D warnings, where the RunEvent::Opened code compiles.
  • launch_args tests ran on macOS: 6 passed, including the new gathering and URL tests.
  • Debug installers built for both formats and inspected:
    • the generated installer.nsi has no APP_ASSOCIATE and includes the hooks;
    • the MSI, decompiled with dark, has no ProgId, Extension or Verb and contains the expected keys (12 OpenWithProgids, SupportedTypes, Capabilities\FileAssociations, RegisteredApplications).
  • Not tested:
    • an actual install and uninstall on Windows: the test installer would have replaced the maintainer's installed WaveFlow, so this needs a VM or the next beta;
    • opening a file from Finder, which needs a bundled .app.
  • The local CodeRabbit review is clean.

… it plays

macOS declares the formats at rank Alternate and feeds RunEvent::Opened to launch_args; the deb, rpm and AppImage get a desktop template with %F and the MIME types; NSIS hooks and a WiX fragment write an OpenWithProgids entry, SupportedTypes and Default apps capabilities on Windows without claiming any extension. Files opened together are gathered into one queue. The Flatpak entry stops listing formats WaveFlow cannot play.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 34479

The previous documentation concern does not require a change, and no remaining issue has been established that would prevent merging after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 34479

WaveFlow becomes available through system file opening without deliberately replacing the user's default player. No concrete security regression was established, but platform-specific URL handling and interrupted installer recovery remain partly unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed runtime exposure is attacker-influenced audio content or paths delivered through desktop file opening to the existing playback process. Machine-wide MSI registration makes that handler available across the installation, but the inspected open commands do not themselves confer installer authority on playback.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new macOS boundary forwards only URLs successfully converted to existing filesystem paths. Its test covers an existing file, a missing file and HTTPS rejection, but not non-local file authorities or encoded path edge cases. This establishes application filtering, not a complete proof of dependency-level URL semantics.
  • observed — Detached file playback supplies no server fallback URL and disables deletion on failure. The decoder opens the local file and restricts server fallback to non-file origins. These existing downstream controls remain on the newly connected file-open route.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Early intent capture and downstream dispatch checks preserve newer user playback authority across the new gathering delay. The inspected normal, unavailable-readiness, superseded and failed-start paths provide no evidence of a new stale-session publication bypass.

…indow forward on macos

Files gathered after an open now play under an intent claimed when they arrive (or as soon as the engine exists at a launch), so a track the user picks during the wait wins. macOS shows the main window when files are opened, except while the splash still stands.

Installed and measured: three files opened together reached the window third, second, first, the first launch's own arguments read last. A batch from several launches now plays in path order; one launch keeps the order it was given.

Installed and uninstalled on Windows 11 (NSIS, per user), on a machine where another player owns the audio formats.

  • After install: .mp3, .flac and .m4a keep their default class and the user's own choice (UserChoice unchanged). Their OpenWithProgids gain WaveFlow.Audio, and so does .dsf, which had no handler. The ProgID and Applications\waveflow.exe carry "…\waveflow.exe" "%1", with the 12 SupportedTypes. RegisteredApplications lists WaveFlow with 12 Capabilities\FileAssociations.
  • Opening three files the way Explorer does (one launch per file, 150 ms apart): one instance remained and played one queue of three. That queue came in reverse, though: the second and third launches reached the window before the first launch read its own arguments. Fixed in 3447958: a batch from several launches now plays in path order, while one launch keeps the order it was given. Re-tested after the fix: 001, 002, 003, playing from the first.
  • After uninstall: every WaveFlow key and value is gone, and the other players' OpenWithProgids values and the default classes are intact. The one trace left is an empty OpenWithProgids under .dsf, by design: that key may be shared.

The MSI was not installed (per machine, needs elevation); its registry table was checked by decompiling it, see the description.
