fix(session): an expired session ends every chat surface, not just the desktop's - #1300
After a ClawBox session expired, some chat surfaces kept working while every other app was already answered 401. Beta already gates HTTP, gates the gateway socket, watches its own sockets, and sends the desktop to /login on the session gate's marked 401. An audit of every authenticated surface on beta still found these gaps:
Surface
What outlived the session
Fix
Hermes dashboard proxy (scripts/hermes-dashboard-proxy.js, the Hermes edition's dashboard with its chat stream and terminal)
A WebSocket was checked once, at its upgrade, and never again. Its 401 carried no session marker.
Keeps the same watch production-server.js keeps (scripts/upgrade-session-watch.js) and cuts the socket at the cookie's expiry or on revocation. Its API 401 is marked x-clawbox-session: expired.
/setup-api/gateway (Control UI chat)
Pointed the chat at the gateway's own port, which checks only the gateway token. The socket never went through the session-gated proxy.
Connects on the page's own origin, like serveGatewayHTML. No request header reaches the script any more.
Control UI chat (/chat and the page above)
The gateway's own bundle, with no expiry handling. When the box cut its socket it sat there dead.
Both routes inject src/lib/control-ui-session-guard.ts. On a marked 401, a socket the box closed or a refused reconnect, or when the tab is shown again, it asks about the current session. When that is refused too, it sends the page, or the app page that frames it, to /login?redirect=….
ChatApp
A socket the gate refused before its hello showed "Could not connect" with a Reconnect. A browser reports the upgrade's 401 as a bare close.
Asks first. A lapsed session signs out; a live one is an ordinary failed connect.
confirmSessionStillValid
A refusal joined a probe sent before the refused request left. That probe's "still signed in" could predate the expiry and keep an idle chat on the page.
Shares a probe only with a signal that is no newer than it.
useSessionExpiryGuard
Installed in a passive effect, after the children's first requests had already gone out unguarded.
Installs in a layout effect.
/updating
Read the gate's 401 as "server down" and held the screen indefinitely.
Installs the guard. A server that is down is still not a sign-out.
Prime Radiant ingest events (SSE)
Kept streaming after the session that opened it ran out.
Re-judges a person's session every 5 s and ends the stream; the page's fallback poll then reaches /login.
Tests
New or extended; each fails on unmodified beta and passes here:
src/tests/unit/hermes-dashboard-proxy-session-expiry.test.ts: the real proxy against a stand-in dashboard. An open socket is cut at expiry and on a password change, a live one stays, an expired API request gets the marked 401, and a live one passes.
src/tests/unit/control-ui-session-guard.test.ts: the shipped guard program, run as it ships. Covers marked 401 → probe → /login, a late 401 for a renewed session, close 4401, a bare close (plain HTTP) throttled, orderly closes ignored, unreachable box, framed page, tab shown again, installs once.
src/tests/routes/gateway/gateway.test.ts, src/tests/unit/gateway-proxy.test.ts: same-origin socket address, guard first in <head> on both Control UI routes.
src/tests/components/chat-session-expiry.test.tsx: ChatApp's socket refused before its hello signs out on an expired session and offers Reconnect on a live one.
src/tests/unit/session-expiry.test.ts: a refusal sent after a probe left gets a probe of its own.
src/tests/components/updating-session-expiry.test.tsx: /updating goes to /login on the first refused poll, and stays through a server that is down and through a renewed session.
src/tests/routes/prime-radiant-ingest.test.ts: the stream ends when its session does, and never for the assistant's bearer.
Valid-session cases are asserted alongside each one: a live socket stays and echoes, a live API request passes, and a probe that answers "signed in" leaves the page alone.
Not changed
The gateway port stays LAN-reachable and token-gated by design (pairing). The ClawBox UI no longer points any chat at it.
The Hermes dashboard tab is Hermes's own bundle. Its sockets and requests are now refused, but this repo puts no script in that page.
The setup wizard pages get no page guard. Before a password exists, the probe route answers the marked 401, so a guard there would bounce the wizard to /login.
Harness native mechanism
none exists: the expired session is ClawBox's own clawbox_session cookie. Neither the gateway nor the Hermes dashboard knows about it; both are reached only through ClawBox's proxies, which apply it. No harness config, store or CLI is touched.
…e desktop's
The session gate already refused HTTP after expiry and production-server.js
closed its own sockets at the cookie's exp. Several chat surfaces still
outlived the session:
- The Hermes dashboard proxy (:8090) checked the session once, at the
WebSocket upgrade, and never again. Its sockets (the dashboard chat
stream, its terminal) kept working after expiry. It now keeps the same
watch production-server.js keeps (scripts/upgrade-session-watch.js), and
cuts a socket at expiry or revocation. Its API 401 carries the session
gate's marker.
- /setup-api/gateway served the Control UI chat pointed at the gateway's
own port, which checks only its own token. A chat opened there never went
through the session-gated proxy at all. It now connects on the page's own
origin, like serveGatewayHTML.
- The Control UI chat (/chat, and the same page on /setup-api/gateway) is
the gateway's bundle, with no expiry handling of its own: when the box cut
its socket it sat there dead. Both routes now inject a small guard
(src/lib/control-ui-session-guard.ts) that applies the desktop's rule: on
the gate's marked 401, on a socket the box closed or on a refused
reconnect, or when the tab is shown again, it probes the current session.
If that is refused too, it sends the page, or the app page framing it,
to /login.
- ChatApp showed "Could not connect" with a Reconnect for a socket the gate
refused before its hello (a browser reports the upgrade's 401 as a bare
close). It now asks first and signs out when the session is gone.
- confirmSessionStillValid let a refusal share a probe sent BEFORE the
refused request left. That probe could have been answered before the
session ran out, and its "still signed in" kept an idle chat on the page.
A refusal now shares only a probe that is no older than itself.
- useSessionExpiryGuard ran in a passive effect, after the children's first
requests had already gone out unguarded. It now runs in a layout effect.
- /updating read the gate's 401 as "server down" and held the screen for
ever. It now installs the guard.
- The Prime Radiant ingest event stream re-judges the session it was opened
on and ends when that is no longer accepted.

Walkthrough
The change adds session-expiry checks to the Hermes dashboard proxy and session-bound ingest streams. It adds a Control UI guard that probes marked HTTP failures, WebSocket closes, and tab visibility changes, then redirects after a confirmed refusal. Gateway and updating surfaces install the guard, and ChatApp delays pre-handshake errors pending session validation.

The Hermes proxy marks session-gate 401 responses and monitors admitted WebSockets for session expiry or revocation. Session-bound ingest streams recheck identity every five seconds and close when it is absent. Tests cover both behaviors.
Session probes and Control UI guard src/lib/session-expiry.ts, src/lib/control-ui-session-guard.ts, src/tests/unit/control-ui-session-guard.test.ts, src/tests/unit/session-expiry.test.ts
Session probes now use request evidence timestamps when deciding whether to reuse an in-flight probe. The Control UI guard checks marked responses, WebSocket closes, and tab visibility, and redirects after a refused probe. Tests cover the guard and probe timing.
The gateway pages inject the guard and derive the WebSocket URL from the browser origin. The updating page installs the expiry hook. ChatApp validates the session before showing a pre-handshake connection error. Tests cover these integrations and outcomes.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 6100a
Chat can remain on its connecting screen without a retry option when a session check stalls. Bound the check before merging, or accept this limited connectivity risk.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6100a
The change strengthens session-expiry enforcement without an established increase in access or privileges. A narrow ingest-stream expiry gap remains, and deployment-level exposure has not been verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The affected authority includes a box's owner-only Hermes dashboard sockets and gateway chat, whose shared token can read conversations across that box. Ingest stream admission separately accepts a valid person session or MCP bearer. The change does not make those credentials interchangeable.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A residual expiry path remains for ingest streams: a cookie may pass requireSession and become invalid before the separate sessionIdentity call. That null identity selects the no-recheck branch, so an already-admitted caller could continue receiving progress until completion or disconnect. This leaves a subset of the base's existing post-expiry exposure; it is not established as introduced or worsened access.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Hermes retains origin checks before owner-session admission and continues forwarding to its configured upstream rather than a client-selected authority. Its documented acceptance of same-host web content on port 80 is a pre-existing trust boundary, unchanged by this PR.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Browser expiry handling does not treat an unreachable server or an unrelated 401 as proof of sign-out. Confirmation probes use no-store requests, and a newer refusal can start a newer probe rather than inheriting an older in-flight success. Server-side admission remains the enforcement boundary.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Bind ingest-stream admission to an explicit authentication method and identity result, rather than interpreting a later null cookie identity as bearer admission. This would close the residual classification window while preserving intentional bearer-authenticated streams.

Explanation
The PR diff changes session-expiry handling for the Hermes proxy, Control UI, ChatApp, updating page, and ingest SSE streams. It does not change Cloudflare tunnel provisioning or startup, public-hostname/DNS handling, tunnel credentials, or remote-access authentication. The gateway change moves WebSocket connections to the page origin and adds session-expiry checks; it does not weaken the existing session or origin protections.

The guard replaced window.WebSocket with a function that returned a plain
native socket, so a page's `class X extends WebSocket` got that bare socket
back from `super()` and lost its own methods. The wrapper now constructs
for `new.target` and inherits the native constructor's statics, so a
subclass stays what it is, and its closes still reach the guard.

This fix closes several gaps where an expired ClawBox session outlived its welcome: the Hermes dashboard proxy's WebSocket kept piping after every HTTP request was already 401'd, the Control UI chat pointed its socket directly at the gateway's own port (which checks only its token, not the session), and several pages — /updating, ChatApp, the Prime Radiant ingest stream — either ignored or misread a session gate's refusal. Each surface now either re-checks the live session periodically or, on a refused request, probes before drawing any conclusion. A new injected JS guard (control-ui-session-guard.ts) does the same for the gateway's own bundle, which ClawBox can't instrument any other way.

…eaves the chat spinning
ChatApp now waits on the session probe before it shows its "Could not
connect" panel and its Reconnect, and the handshake timer is already
cleared by then. A probe the network swallows (a phone that left the
Wi-Fi) kept the chat on its spinner with nothing to press. The probe now
gives up after SESSION_PROBE_TIMEOUT_MS (5 s) and counts as a box it
cannot reach, which is not a sign-out. The Control UI guard's probe gets
the same bound.
