Summary

Fixes #1673.

  • Add fbuild --fix-win: request UAC for a fixed helper that enables and verifies only Windows LongPathsEnabled. The helper never builds; an accepted interactive repair resumes the pending command in a fresh ordinary process.
  • Offer [y/N] before interactive ESP32 operations. Declined, cancelled, policy-blocked, and CI runs use short cache, extraction scratch, and deep build output paths with visible yellow terminal warnings and plain HTTP/NDJSON diagnostics.
  • Keep path selection fixed for each process. Retain automatic caches after repair, honor explicit cache changes on the next invocation, forward each caller's selected build root, and drain incompatible daemons before replacement without killing active builds.
  • Protect automatic per-user drive directories with ownership, reparse-point, ACL, and concurrency checks. Validate extracted SDK members and compiler/project/output paths that still exceed legacy limits.
  • Embed longPathAware and asInvoker manifests in both executables. Keep help, diagnostics, and explicit repair usable. Document setup and remaining external-tool limits.

Verification

  • RED → GREEN focused tests for repair consent/readback, path selection and retention, unsafe links, HTTP/NDJSON warnings, extraction limits, and immutable daemon state.
  • Full workspace: 3,755 passed, 95 ignored; another 22 Python facade tests passed. The resolver suite passes 36/36, including real concurrent initialization regressions.
  • soldr cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings passed.
  • Windows MSVC cross-build linked both executables; llvm-readobj --coff-resources confirmed both embedded manifests.
  • Native Windows workspace Clippy and tests passed: 3,762 passed, 94 ignored.
  • Required native Linux replay and ordinary-PR multi-OS Dylint replay each passed all three jobs. The source-bound Local-Gate stamp is verified.
  • Platform-boundary ledger, fbuild path baseline, test-layout checks, formatting, and independent clud-review passed.
  • Extended the existing Windows check with a disposable-runner registry helper/fallback/daemon-handoff smoke, restoring its original registry setting afterward. No workflow files added.

Native Windows validation passed at final commit ea241a2ad865140b89e7c4c22dbadd3e998c9cde: workspace Clippy and tests, embedded manifests, real registry helper and readback, already-enabled repair, fallback JSON with plain redirected warnings, and daemon replacement after a registry change. The original runner registry setting was restored. All PR checks finished: 21 passed and 3 skipped.

The hosted Windows run exercises native ownership/privacy/concurrency tests and the registry helper. Interactive UAC acceptance itself requires a desktop; automated coverage checks consent/cancellation and verified helper outcomes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added Windows long-path support, including fbuild --fix-win to enable it with administrator approval.
    • Windows ESP32 commands can offer an interactive repair prompt. If repair is declined or unavailable, builds use shorter fallback paths and display a warning.
    • Daemons now gracefully handle changes to Windows long-path settings and allow active work to drain before restarting.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Added path-length checks for build and package operations when Windows long-path support is unavailable.
  • Documentation

    • Added Windows setup guidance covering repair, fallback behavior, and path limitations.

Roll-up rebase verification: the complete Windows replay 39728305765 passed on rebased head c9482c04, including the real long-path repair/fallback smoke and both esptool source-package checks. Source-bound local proof remains pending under the no-additional-copies constraint; no required gate has been bypassed.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds Windows long-path detection and repair, fallback cache and build paths, path validation, and daemon policy checks. The CLI can prompt for repair on eligible ESP32 commands. The daemon reports fallback advisories and retires when the observed policy changes.

Changes: Windows long-path support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Platform policy and secure directories
crates/fbuild-core/src/platform/*, crates/fbuild-core/src/platform/windows/*, crates/fbuild-cli/build.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/build.rs, .github/workflows/check-windows.yml
Adds Windows registry query and repair operations, native path-length measurement, short-cache-base selection, private-directory handling, and a manifest embedded in Windows executables. The workflow tests the manifests, repair behavior, fallback warning, daemon handoff, and registry restoration.
Fallback path resolution and validation
crates/fbuild-paths/src/long_paths*, crates/fbuild-paths/src/lib.rs, crates/fbuild-paths/src/running_process.rs, crates/fbuild-build-engine/src/*, crates/fbuild-packages-fetch/src/extractor.rs
Adds a policy snapshot and fallback cache, scratch, and build roots. Build initialization validates and prepares selected paths. Package extraction validates extracted paths when fallback is required.
CLI repair and daemon-client coordination
crates/fbuild-cli/src/cli/*, crates/fbuild-cli/src/daemon_client*, crates/fbuild-cli/src/output.rs, crates/fbuild-cli/src/mcp/tools.rs, crates/fbuild-cli/tests/it/*, README.md, docs/getting-started/README.md, docs/reference/cli.md
Adds --fix-win, an interactive repair flow for eligible ESP32 commands, fresh-process relaunch, daemon reconciliation, build-root request overrides, and warning output. Adds CLI tests and Windows setup documentation.
Daemon policy and operation responses
crates/fbuild-daemon/src/long_paths.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/src/context.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/src/handlers/health.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/src/broker/backend.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/src/models.rs, crates/fbuild-daemon/src/main.rs
Captures and reports the daemon’s startup policy observation. Package-operation middleware attaches fallback advisories and retires the daemon when the observed policy changes.
Build and extraction path checks
crates/fbuild-build-engine/src/compiler.rs, crates/fbuild-build-engine/src/pipeline/context.rs, crates/fbuild-packages-fetch/src/extractor.rs
Validates compiler, source, output, project, build, and extracted-tree paths against legacy path limits when fallback applies.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1673] requires documentation or detection of the Windows LongPathsEnabled requirement for ESP32 builds. The PR documents the registry value and repair command, probes the setting, warns when it is disabled or unknown, provides fbuild --fix-win, and applies short-path fallback behavior. Tests cover repair, probing, warnings, fallback resolution, and path validation. These changes satisfy the issue's coding requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to [#1673]. Path resolution, cache and build-root handling, extraction checks, daemon handoff, diagnostics, manifests, documentation, and tests support Windows long-path detection, repair, or safe fallback. The workflow smoke test validates this behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated in the available whole-PR summary.

`write_marker` so it reads and validates an existing marker before attempting a
write, avoiding replacement when the marker is already valid. Make the
first-time write safe against concurrent initialization, so another process
installing the marker does not cause initialization to fail.
