Summary

Build the official espressif32@1.11.2 ESP32 platform used by FastLED's IDF 3.3 release gate. Select its declared toolchain-xtensa32, accept its legacy esptool source archive, read the flat SDK layout, and use flags and linker scripts supported by GCC 5.2 and the bundled SDK.

Validation

  • RED: FastLED bash compile esp32dev_idf33 --examples Blink failed because toolchain-xtensa-esp-elf was absent from the selected platform manifest.
  • GREEN: The same command passed with this fbuild daemon and FastLED's companion IDF 3.3 source compatibility changes; firmware.bin was produced using platform-espressif32@1.11.2, toolchain-xtensa32@2.50200.97, and bundled IDF 3.3.
  • bash test -p fbuild-build-esp and bash test -p fbuild-library passed.
  • soldr cargo clippy -p fbuild-build-esp -p fbuild-library --all-targets -- -D warnings passed.
  • Modern esp32dev Blink passed with the same patched daemon.

Coordinated with FastLED/FastLED#4685. The FastLED source and pin change follows this fbuild release.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for legacy ESP32 toolchains, including their compiler and linker settings.
    • ESP32 builds now report memory usage by default where supported; this can be configured, and legacy Xtensa builds continue to omit the report.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved ESP32 SDK discovery across PlatformIO layouts, including generic builder scripts and shared SDK include directories.
    • Source archives for esptool are now accepted when they contain either pyproject.toml or setup.py.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add support for the legacy toolchain-xtensa32 package, adjust ESP32 SDK path discovery, and accept additional esptool source archive layouts.

Changes

Legacy ESP32 Platform Compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and configure the legacy toolchain
crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/orchestrator/packages.rs, crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/orchestrator/packages_legacy_tests.rs, crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/fixups.rs
Toolchain selection recognizes toolchain-xtensa32 for ESP32 when declared. Its fixups remove hardware atomics, set the legacy C++ standard and linker recipe, and report that macro-prefix maps are unsupported.
Apply legacy build and linker arguments
crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/esp32_linker.rs, crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/esp32_linker_tests.rs, crates/fbuild-build-esp/src/esp32/orchestrator/build.rs
The linker exposes a setting for memory-usage reporting. The orchestrator disables that report for toolchain-xtensa32 and omits unsupported macro-prefix maps.
Resolve legacy SDK paths
crates/fbuild-library/src/library/esp32_framework/sdk_paths.rs
SDK path parsing falls back to the generic PlatformIO builder script and selects the flat SDK directory when it contains an include directory.
Validate legacy esptool source archives
crates/fbuild-library/src/library/esptool.rs
Source validation accepts either pyproject.toml or setup.py, while still requiring esptool.py.

🟡 Minor · Fall back to the generic builder script for SDK defines. · sdk_paths.rs:347-357

crates/fbuild-library/src/library/esp32_framework/sdk_paths.rs:347-357
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fall back to the generic builder script for SDK defines.

When flags/defines is absent and only tools/platformio-build.py contains CPPDEFINES, get_sdk_defines can return an empty list because it reads only the per-MCU script. The ESP32 build path prepends this list to compiler flags, so those SDK defines can be omitted. Check the per-MCU script first, then the generic script, as parse_pio_cpppath does.

🐛 Suggested fix
-        let script = self
-            .resolved_dir()
-            .join("tools")
-            .join(format!("platformio-build-{mcu}.py"));
+        let tools_dir = self.resolved_dir().join("tools");
+        let per_mcu_script = tools_dir.join(format!("platformio-build-{mcu}.py"));
+        let script = if per_mcu_script.exists() {
+            per_mcu_script
+        } else {
+            tools_dir.join("platformio-build.py")
+        };
         std::fs::read_to_string(script)
