dotfiles - Setting up a new Mac

Install brew

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

Clone dotfiles

git clone https://github.com/Eskotus/dotfiles.git ~/.dotfiles

Run bundle

cd .dotfiles
brew bundle # installs everything listed in Brewfile

Run RCM

Makes symlinks of all the files in this project.

rcup rcrc # excludes certain files from rcup
rcup -f

Make GNU bash default shell

echo "/usr/local/bin/bash" | sudo tee -a /etc/shells
chsh -s /usr/local/bin/bash

Add a ~/.extra to contain non-github stuff

GIT_AUTHOR_NAME="Eero Saikku"

git config --global user.name "$GIT_AUTHOR_NAME"

Troubleshooting

These files might brake your terminal after bigger updates. In that case follow these steps:

  • Delete all the symlinks created from this folder to get your terminal reset to default
  • Update CLT (Command Line Tools)
sudo rm -rf /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools
sudo xcode-select --install
  • Run RCM part again
