A recipe for a sauce that tastes like Taco Bell Red Sauce. This is not the sauce in the packets, it is the sauce in the Bean Burritos and that used to be on the Enchirito and Smothered Burritos when they had those.
2 1/4 cup water (divided if using cornstarch)
1/2 tsp Xanthan Gum or 2 Tbsp corn starch
1 Tbsp paprika
1 Tbsp chili powder
2 Tbsp tomato paste
2 tsp smoked paprika
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp nutritional yeast
1 tsp lime juice
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp sugar
- Bring all ingredients (except 1/4 cup water and corn starch if using cornstarch) to a boil in a saucepan.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
If using Xanthan Gum:
- Remove from heat, add Xanthan Gum, and blend with an immersion blender or in a blender.
If using corn starch:
- Mix 1/4 cup water and corn starch.
- Add corn starch water to the pan, bring back to a simmer, and simmer for another minute or two whisking frequently.
Using Xanthan Gum gives a better texture that is closer to the original but corn starch can be used instead.
This recipe is a work in progress. I think it tastes pretty close to Taco Bell's Red Sauce but it still needs improvement.
