I think this is a simple fix for a memory leak I was experiencing from the destroy method.

That's interesting - that shouldn't be reachable form the base, and therefore should be GC'ed. That it isn't suggests that there is something else that isn't being released correctly. I'll leave this open until I have a chance to have a proper look into it.
