Please accept my thankfulness for making this package available to us. There are methods of CMA-ES niching that make use of niche radius.

Can fitness sharing with a custom way of computing distances be made part of the CatCMA?

Yes — you can add fitness sharing with a custom distance at the ask-and-tell level without changing the library internals.
After ask(), compute your custom distances within the sampled population, derive a sharing-adjusted score from the objective values, and pass that score to tell().
