Blinky Windows eye strain reminder and 20-20-20 break timer

Blinky — Offline Windows 20-20-20 Eye Care Timer

Eye care, on autopilot.

Blinky is a tiny, privacy-first Windows eye strain reminder and 20-20-20 break timer. Every 20 minutes, it dims your screen for 20 seconds and reminds you to look at something 20 feet away—the ophthalmologist-recommended 20-20-20 rule.

Set it once, keep working, and let Blinky help reduce digital eye strain without accounts, subscriptions, telemetry, or distracting notifications.

What is Blinky?

Blinky is an offline screen break reminder for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It automatically enforces regular eye breaks while you work, study, code, or browse. Unlike cloud-based wellness apps, Blinky runs locally on your PC and is designed for people who want a simple, lightweight, private eye-care timer.

✨ Features

  • Automatic 20-20-20 reminders — every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look 20 feet away
  • Screen-dimming break overlay — makes it clear when it is time to rest your eyes
  • 100% offline and private — no accounts, network calls, tracking, or telemetry during normal use
  • Dashboard window — opens on launch, shows live status and every action
  • Floating quick-access button — a small draggable icon that lives on your screen; click it anytime to open the dashboard, or hide it entirely
  • System tray app — right-click for the full menu
  • Pause, resume, or break now — fully adjustable reminder interval and break duration
  • Optional strict mode — makes a break impossible to skip for people who want stronger enforcement
  • Multi-monitor support — the break overlay covers every connected screen
  • Launches with Windows — enabled by default and easy to turn off
  • Manual update check — checks only when you click the button, never automatically in the background

📥 Download and Install

  1. Go to Releases and download Blinky-Setup.exe.
  2. Run the installer — no administrator rights required.
  3. Optionally select Create a desktop shortcut.
  4. Done. Blinky opens automatically and runs quietly in your system tray.

Uninstalling is just as clean: Settings → Apps → Blinky → Uninstall, like any normal Windows app.

Windows SmartScreen may show a “protect your PC” warning the first time you run the installer. This is normal for independently distributed apps that are not code-signed. Click More info → Run anyway.

🖥️ System Requirements

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • No internet connection required to use the app
  • Approximately 30 MB of disk space

👀 Why use the 20-20-20 rule?

Long periods of uninterrupted screen time can contribute to tired, dry, or uncomfortable eyes. The 20-20-20 rule is a simple habit: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Blinky automates the reminder so you do not have to watch the clock.

Blinky is a productivity and wellness reminder, not a medical device. If you have persistent eye symptoms, consult an eye-care professional.

🔒 Privacy

Blinky makes zero network calls during normal use. The only exception is the Check for Updates button—and even that only runs when you click it yourself, fetching a small public version file from this repository. Nothing about you or your device is ever sent anywhere.

📄 License

Blinky is free to use for personal or commercial purposes, but the source code is closed and all rights are reserved. See LICENSE for the full terms. In short: use it freely, but do not redistribute or repackage the installer elsewhere, and do not reverse-engineer it.

About

Blinky is a tiny, fully offline Windows utility that follows the ophthalmologist-backed 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This app enforces that automatically by dimming the screen to black with a calm countdown overlay. 100% offline. No telemetry, no accounts, no network calls of any kind.
